With maxed-out credit cards, these Danish brothers built a prototype that caught Google co-founder Larry Page's eye—but faced HUGE technical issues to get it over the line. From CIA-funded satellites, to a ""Mad Max"" desert race, the road to Google Maps was a journey in itself that created an $11 billion revenue generator powering everything from Uber to Airbnb. In this episode, Eleanor talks to Alexander Thomas, a filmmaker and academic who leads the BA in Media Production at the University of East London. They discuss his new book about transhumanism, a philosophical movement that aims to improve human capabilities through technology and whose followers includes Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Larry Page, and also apparently the DJ Steve Aoki. Alex is himself one of the foremost commentators on transhumanism. He explores transhumanist fantasies about the future of the human, is obsessed with the extremes of possibility: they either think that AI will bring us radical abundance or total extinction. Transhumanism, Alexander says in this episode, reduces life down to information processing and intelligence, which amounts to a kind of IQ fetishism.

Let's get into it by clicking here.   Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice.   And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Maxwell Nee, the hardest thing in growing a small business is finding the right people. He illustrates this by pointing to well-known success stories, noting that these achievements were often the result of small, effective teams or "pods". He gives examples like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple, Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google, and Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg as the initial forces behind Facebook. While acknowledging that some individuals within these teams might have been more influential than others, Maxwell emphasizes that the contribution of two, three, or four individuals working together was crucial to realizing their success. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Maxwell Nee credited two transformative books for shaping his entrepreneurial approach: "OverSUBSCRIBED" by Daniel Priestley, which revolutionized his mindset on creating unstoppable demand by making businesses "must-haves," and "The Outsiders" by William N. Thorndike, which revealed how unconventional CEOs achieved outsized returns through radical capital discipline and independent thinking. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Maxwell Nee mentioned that he doesn't really have specific great podcasts or online learning tools to recommend for professional development. While he listens to podcasts like "Diary of a CEO" and the one he was being interviewed on, his preferred approach is to become deeply engaged with specific individuals who align with his learning objectives at a particular time. He typically spends around three months focusing on one person, thoroughly reading their books and listening to their podcasts multiple times before moving on to someone else. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Maxwell Nee suggests that small business owners can benefit from using time blocking to manage their many responsibilities more effectively by pre-planning their schedules. He also highlights Score App, a lead generation software that uses quiz marketing to gamify the process and significantly increase conversion rates while filtering out unsuitable leads, as a valuable resource. In terms of professional development, Maxwell prefers to deeply immerse himself in the work of specific individuals for extended periods rather than broadly following podcasts or online learning. Two influential books he recommends are Oversubscribe by Daniel Priestley and Outsiders, which offers insights from unconventional CEOs. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Maxwell Nee would tell his younger self on day one of starting out to have a deliberate conversation about the learning curve . He wishes he had the awareness to work for free with someone he admired in a cool industry for about six months to "sponge it all up". He believes this approach would have been faster than his initial self-funded journey, where he paid for his own learning and personal expenses Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Instead, he says, they need to have “respect for the industry” before designing AI solutions that speed up specific tasks.“These industries are incredibly complex,” Winston says. “Legal is one of the oldest professions known to man. There are firms that are over a hundred years old. Chris Anderson can't talk a lot about what he is up to these days. At least on camera. His LinkedIn profile says he's currently an Engineer at “Stealth". Prior to this current professional opacity, he was at Kitty Hawk, the electric aircraft maker founded by Sebastian Thrun (legendary Stanford Professor and former lead of Google's self-driving car team that led to Waymo) and backed by Google Co-founder, Larry Page. I became familiar with Chris while he was leading Wired Magazine as Editor-in-Chief. His work there was groundbreaking and set much of the pace, tone, and agenda for the early days of Web 2.0 and the Maker movement. After seeing a TedX talk about a side hustle he had selling cellophane bags of electrical parts and open source autopilots for DIY Drones I slid into his DM's.There is a lot of buzz around drones today, but note the date on that DM — November 3rd, 2010. Little did I know at the time, that this little drone business was just beginning to grow from Chris and his kids packing orders at their dinner table to a proper manufacturing and distribution center along the border of Mexico. As things happened, that DM turned into a conversation that turned into an investment in a company, 3D Robotics, that took Chris away from Wired and into the uncharted worlds of manufacturing, consumer hardware, and defense tech. He was early and 3DR didn't play out the way that we'd all hoped but it laid the foundations for much of what he's working on now — even though he can't talk much about that publicly. To say Chris has a knack for living in the future would be a massive understatement. In this conversation we unpack his process for exploring possible futures — spoiler: Chris has started writing science fiction as a way to explore complex technological implications. He writes a book a month, using fiction as a computational tool to play out scenarios with artificial agents and see where they lead. We get into what he got right and what he got wrong about drones specifically and defense tech more broadly. And we discuss the culture of Silicon Valley, where we spar a bit on the amount of waste and wandering built into the system that ultimately leads to so many unexpected breakthroughs. Since that first DM, he has become a dear friend, coconspirator, and sounding board for me. The unedited conversation here went on for nearly 3 hours (which reminds me that we really do need an “indie uncut” channel) but that's the kind of person Chris is — generous in sharing his time, ideas, and insights. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording this one.

Guest: Rony Abovitz, founder & CEO of SynthBeeSynthBee CEO Rony Abovitz grew up “really believing” in Star Wars and the idea that there could be benevolent, artificially intelligent beings like R2-D2 and C-3PO.“It wasn't a dystopian vision of the future,” he says. “It wasn't HAL from 2001.  It wasn't the Terminator. It wasn't Skynet.  It was this kind of friendly, empathetic, more utopian vision.” George Lucas himself told Rony to tone it down and not “take it so literally” — but he was undeterred. The way he describes today's leading AI powers sounds like an idealistic Rebel conceptualizing the Evil Empire.“You've got companies that receive massive funding that want to take all the data in the world ... I feel that's a massive mistake,” Rony says. “We become serfs. They become the Lords. They become the Kings. I'm completely opposed to that. So I started to imagine for SynthBee what is a different form of computing intelligence, one that could help us, but have much more safety [and] human centrism.”Chapters:(01:12) - Fundraising (02:27) - Meeting John Doerr (07:05) - The Beast (10:06) - Unfinished business (11:47) - Apple and Meta (15:20) - The COVID-19 pandemic (21:12) - “Investors panicked” (25:28) - Shaquille O'Neal vs. digital Shaq (29:43) - Magic Leap alumni (32:45) - Financial outcomes (38:27) - Peggy Johnson (40:27) - “A weird version of hell” (44:08) - A strange intro to Google (50:42) - Larry Page and Sergey Brin (54:27) - Founder voting power (01:00:40) - Mako Surgical (01:03:04) - The 9/11 term sheet (01:06:40) - The worst pitch ever (01:09:55) - The 2008 IPO (01:16:15) - Selling to Stryker (01:18:30) - What is SynthBee? Mots-Clés : Etat, télescopage, appareils judiciaires, thèse, livre, Christine Kerdellant, urgence, milliardaire, patron, Tesla, Jeff Bezos, Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Meta, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Google, riche, puissant, modèle de société, vision du monde, histoire, capitalisme, exemple, propriétaire, SpaceX, société, satellites, espace, Ukraine, Ukrainiens, base navale, russe, contacts, Poutine, Pearl Harbour, Moscou, riposte, nucléaire, responsable, Hiroshima, accès, Internet, zones, attaque, raison, ministre, ministère, Défense américaine, chef d'entreprise, rôle, fournisseur d'accès, numérique, zone de non droit, accusation, avocat, PDG, responsable, plateforme. --- La chronique économique d'Amid Faljaoui, tous les jours à 8h30 et à 17h30. You are inside your business, looking out.The customer is outside your business, looking in.Your inside-out perspective makes you blind in one eye.Confirmation bias makes you blind in the other eye.You cannot see yourself the way your customer sees you. You imagine how they see you based on your mission statement, your policies and procedures, your employee training, and your good intentions. But you alone know those things, see those things, and care about those things. Your customer doesn't know, doesn't see, doesn't care.Bad ads talk about all the things the customer would care about if they knew everything that you know.Good ads talk about what the customer already cares about. When you have convinced an ad writer to see your business in the same way you do, that ad writer has nothing left to offer you but flattery.I'm not trying to offend you, friend. I am trying to open your eyes. Why do so many business owners think effective advertising can be discovered by studying the data?Bob Hoffman is an old ad guy like me. I've never met him, but I like him.Bob writes,“Our industry is drowning in math and starving for ideas. We need people who can dream shit up. We need impractical, illogical people. We have plenty of data. We need more of the opposite. We have forgotten that the only unique benefits we can provide to clients is imaginative thinking and creativity. Everything else, aside from ideas, they can get somewhere else. Good ideas are good ideas. Things that are entertaining, interesting and uplifting will always be attractive to everyone.”“On social media, for every success there are 10,000 failures. You have to be really good at it and there are very few people that can do it. Why are 97 per cent of all ads, books, movies and films crappy? Because it's really, really difficult to make good stuff. And it's the same with social media. Most of it is worthless and has no creativity or imagination to it.”Instead of look at the data, we should be looking at first principles.“First principles is kind of a physics way of looking at the world. You boil things down to the most fundamental truths and say, ‘What are we sure is true?' … and then reason up from there.”– Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX“Good inventors and designers (and marketers) deeply understand their customer. They spend tremendous energy developing that intuition. They study and understand many anecdotes rather than only the averages you'll find on surveys.”– Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com“Every moment in business happens only once. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won't make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won't create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them… Indeed, the single most powerful pattern I have noticed is that successful people find value in unexpected places, and they do this by thinking about business from first principles instead of formulas.”– Peter Thiel, PaypalGreat ad strategies are discovered when we return to first principles. These are the first principles of effective ad creation.Don't try to convince the customer to think and feel like you do. Learn how to think and feel like the customer. The customer isn't looking for a product or a service. They are looking for transformation. Those first principles will never change.Everything else is execution, which requires impractical, illogical people who can dream shit up.Roy H. These days, artificial intelligence is a hot topic on the news, social media, our workplaces, and our conversations. Yet AI has a long history. One of its pioneers, Dr. Terry Winograd, has been engaging it for well over 50 years. After finishing his doctorate at MIT, Terry was hired by Stanford University to teach computer science. He's now professor emeritus at Stanford where he spent the bulk of his career teaching and contributing mightily to the field of computer science. And just to give you a sense of his international impact, let's consider the h-index, a way to measure the impact of a person's research. An h-index of 40 is considered outstanding while an h-index of 60 is considered truly exceptional. Terry's is 70, which means his research made a massive splash and has been frequently cited in order to further knowledge on his subject.  And while at Stanford, two of his doctoral students were none other than Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who would later go on to found Google. You'll hear that story and so many others. So, listen in as Terry and I talk about AI and Google, then and now. Sales Meetings with Purpose. Lisa Thal is an Author, Inspirational Speaker, and Business Coach with over 37 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience. She wrote the book Three Word Meetings. Lisa coaches leaders on creating sales and business meetings with fun and interesting 3-word topics that spark conversation and inspire sales teams.   Episode 238 is about creating your commencement speech.  What advice would you have for yourself and others?   I was having lunch with a friend whose daughter was graduating from college. She asked me what the best advice I could give her and other graduates. Keep investing in yourself, and do life differently. Then I shared, Create your path.     Graduation is not just the end of an academic chapter; it's the beginning of a new venture filled with limitless possibilities. I am Lisa Thal, your host for the Three Word Podcast. My vision each week is to share three-word topics to inspire you or a possible topic for discussion in your next sales meeting.   We dive into creating your commencement speech. Consider this your blueprint for success—a personal manifesto that captures your unique vision and aspirations.   My commencement speech would be to be bold and color outside the lines. The traditional paths are just one option among many. That includes the fact that college is not for everyone. Some start their own companies. Some of us gain certifications that follow a different educational path. My advice is to take charge and craft your picture of the future.    Do you remember, as kids, we were trained to color between the lines? Color between the lines: Lisa, stay between the lines—a phrase enforced on us repeatedly.     As we grow older, we often find ourselves confined to coloring only within the lines of life, perhaps questioning why we can't venture beyond these boundaries.    Think of all the remarkable individuals who colored outside those lines—all the great inventors and spiritual leaders in our lifetime. Here are two names: Larry Page and Sergey Brin; they invented Google in 1998! They colored outside the lines!   We look up to those who dared to create a different picture and refused to be confined by the lines. A coloring book may suggest conformity, but we often play it safe and stay within those lines. 'I better stay between the lines,' we tell ourselves.   Most successful people step outside those lines! They have a different vision and dare to create a different picture. Decide in your life that you are not playing the game of coloring in between someone else's determined picture. You have a great vision for your life.   A new picture of your Life! Stepping out of your comfort zone when things get a little more challenging, trying to fit your life between those lines.   I firmly believe you were born to design your path and picture. Broaden your vision for your life. You'll attempt things that may not be comfortable, but they are essential for your growth. Our life is all about learning and trying new experiences.    Successful people do difficult things! Take a minute to think about someone you view as successful. What are they doing differently than others? Success is when you have the courage and confidence to look ahead. When I look back on my own life and think about those times, I have to step outside the lines to push myself to learn something new, something unfamiliar.   I never thought I would be an author when I wrote the book Three Word Meetings. I had to research how to capture all my thoughts and knowledge to share with you. How do you get a book published? Then, I created the Three Word Podcast. I am not a technical person, but I asked those who were to show me how to record and edit the content I share with you each week.    I can tell you that many times, I was uncomfortable. Another example: I trained to complete the Flying Pig Marathon. I wanted to see if I could mentally and physically run 26.2 Miles! I had to create a vision that I could. Even when I had IT band issues, I had to keep running through the pain to finish.     Develop a habit of expanding yourself. Don't shy away from discomfort. Sometimes, we have to get uncomfortable to get comfortable. It's in these moments of unease that we truly grow. Set a new standard at work, health, relationships, and business.   What are you willing to do? Focus on your growth. We gain great happiness when we push ourselves to a new level. A better path means you can do great things with your life. See your life expanding outside those lines. You have an opportunity to inspire yourself and others.      Remember, the best way to predict the future is to create it.  Make your mark on the world. Keep Graduating to the next level!   Could you share this article if someone you know can benefit from it? If there is a topic you would like me to discuss, private message me.    Create engaging sales meetings in minutes!  My easy-to-use process can quickly create impactful meetings tailored to your Team's needs.    Learn more at www.Threewordmeetings.com.

Chapter 1:Summary of Bold Book"Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World" is a book written by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler, published in 2015. The book serves as a motivational guide that encourages entrepreneurs and innovators to think ambitiously and leverage exponential technologies to solve the world's grand challenges."Bold" is divided into three sections:1. **Bold Technology**: The authors discuss the power and potential of exponential technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, and 3D printing. They emphasize how these technologies are advancing at an incredible pace and have the power to disrupt industries and revolutionize the way we live and work.2. **Bold Mindset**: In this section, Diamandis and Kotler investigate the mindset and attributes of today's most successful innovators and entrepreneurs, like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and Larry Page. They explore how these figures think differently and take risks to create significant impact. The authors explain the importance of thinking at scale and having an abundance mindset.3. **Bold Crowd**: The final section delves into the use of crowdsourcing, incentive competitions, and the power of community engagement to launch and accelerate momentum for ventures. It highlights platforms such as Kickstarter for crowdfunding, XPRIZE for incentive competitions, and other open-source and cooperative approaches that leverage the "crowd" to contribute, innovate, and solve problems collaboratively.Throughout the book, Diamandis and Kotler provide actionable advice on how individuals and businesses can harness these tools to create wealth and impact. They also discuss the future implications of these technologies and the ethical considerations that come with them.Overall, "Bold" is an inspirational read that aims to empower readers with the knowledge and tools to think bigger, innovate better, and contribute to solving some of the most pressing issues facing humanity today.Chapter 2:the theme of Bold Book### Key Plot Points"Bold" is a practical guide that inspires and educates entrepreneurs and innovators on harnessing exponential technologies, understanding the power of crowd-sourcing, and leading breakthroughs in various industries. The book is structured into three primary sections:1. **Exponential Technologies**: Exploring the power and potential of technologies like 3D printing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology.2. **The Psychology of Bold**: Discussing the mindset and attributes needed to leverage exponential technologies effectively.3. **The Crowd Economy**: Showing how leveraging crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, and building community can aid in achieving large scale impacts.### Thematic Ideas- **The Power of Exponential Technology**: One of the central themes is the concept that certain technologies are advancing at an exponential rate and that these can be leveraged for massive change and innovation. Diamandis and Kotler emphasize the need to understand and utilize these technologies before they become mainstream.- **Abundance Mindset**: Stemming from Diamandis's previous work "Abundance," there is a strong theme that the world's biggest problems can be solved through technology, innovative thinking, and leveraging the crowd.- **Democratization of Technology and Power**: The authors discuss how today's technologies are becoming more accessible and how small groups or even individuals can make significant impacts, a struggle traditionally limited to large corporations or governments.- **Utilizing the Crowd**: A significant portion of the book discusses how modern entrepreneurs can utilize the crowd for funding (crowdfunding), innovation (crowdsourcing),...

In this discussion, @taylorawelch emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing risk in business. Contrary to popular belief, safety and risk aren't opposite ends of a spectrum. Rather, they exist together and the ultimate safety is in being able to take calculated risks. The speaker argues that fear of risk can hinder opportunity and success, and reframing risk as an asset can unlock potential. He also shares insights from business figures like Charlie Munger and Larry Page to highlight the importance of perseverance and courage in venture decisions. The major takeaways from the talk are: if you live long enough, you usually get what you deserve; risk is largely mitigated by going all in and persevering; and it's necessary to embrace the 'suck' and persist in your efforts.00:00 Introduction to Risk and Safety01:00 Understanding the Concept of Risk03:21 Real-life Examples of Risk Management05:19 The Role of Perspective in Risk Assessment08:00 The Importance of Taking Calculated Risks13:00 The Dangers of Avoiding Risk17:00 The Role of Risk in Entrepreneurship21:45 Risk Management Strategies30:27 Conclusion: Embracing Risk for SuccessRECORDED 2020 or before
