Majeda Clarke is a weaver, whose work is concerned with identity and a sense of place. She combines traditional techniques from some very different parts of the world – such as Bangladesh and North Wales – with an aesthetic that has been influenced by Josef and Anni Albers. She came to textiles relatively late in life (having previously been in education) but has gone on to win a number of awards, as well as exhibiting at the Aram Gallery, Mint and Fortnum & Mason in London. She has also collaborated with the likes of The Rothschild Foundation and The Citizens of the World Choir. In this episode we talk about: her passion for collecting; why she makes scarves in Bangladesh and blankets in Wales; growing up on a tea plantation; being locked in a cell when she arrived in the UK at the age of five; producing art in lockdown; how the Black Lives Matter movement has shifted her thinking; the pressure of representing; her fascination with regional skills; and encouraging mistakes.Support the show
Riya Patel is The Aram Gallery's curator and the contributing editor of Icon magazine. We sat down together for an intimate chat in which Riya shared with me her thoughts on the current state of the architecture and design industries. We also discuss the history of The Aram Gallery and its programme of exhibitions which encourages and promotes understanding of the contemporary design and champions experimental design thinking. OKAY Studio is a collective of individual designers sharing a bit more then a workspace. This will be the first curated exhibition (presented at the London Design Festival 2008) of the group. The exhibition will transform the Aram Gallery into a series of ‘rooms’ that will represent the working spaces of each of the members of the studio, reflecting on how they operate successfully as colleagues rather than as a branded consultancy. Under The Same Roof will show the work of: Shay Alkalay, Tomas Alonso, Jordi Canudas, Mathias Hahn, Peter Marigold, Yael Mer, Oscar Narud, Hiroko Shiratori and Jorre van Ast. www.okaystudio.org
