Tolstoy and great books about unhappy familiesFor this episode and its question from our friend and superb librarian Lucinda wanting more books about unhappy families, we were joined by Jen from Still North Books & Bar as Allie had a conflict. Jen was succinct, delightful, and forthcoming about her senior thesis with one recommendation - Abolish the Family by Sophie Lewis. Emma had a long list that included Normal Family by Chrysta Bilton, Fun Home by Allison Bechtdel, Priest Daddy by Partricia Lockwood and Dominicana by Angie Cruz. Kari split the difference and chose two books - Inheritance by Dani Shapiro and Bastards by Mary Anna King. Have fun with these unhappy families.Shelf Help is a podcast where booksellers help you answer one of life's trickier - and we'd argue extremely important - questions: what should you read next? Do bad bills ever go good? Rarely, if ever. But that may change with Vermont this session, as House Bill 629 is being redrafted and is expected to be cleaned up, all through the efforts of local and national advocates, including the Vermont Adoptee Rights Working Group. Greg talks to Rebekah Henson, Ellie Lane, Rebecca Dragon, and Mary Anna King about their efforts and work in Vermont, about the New England Adoptee Rights Coalition, and about working to educate legislators about adoptee rights and original birth records. Get more information about the New England Adoptee Rights Coalition here, as well as the Vermont Adoptee Rights Working Group here. And you can watch the latest testimony in the Vermont House Judiciary Committee on its YouTube channel here, including live testimony on March 9 for House Bill 629.

Things get delightfully and deceivingly filthy as Mary Anna King (author of Bastards) joins us to discuss The Great British Bake Off! Let's be honest, though: It's mostly just talk about how Paul Hollywood might be our biggest problematic fave so far. All the touching, and kneading, and....leaving loaves behind.....mmmmmmmmmm......
Rebekah Henson shares her story of growing up as an only child, then discovering she was one of seven biological siblings. If this sounds at all familiar, I actually interviewed Rebekah’s older sister Mary Anna King on season one, episode 7. Rebekah is incredibly open with me about the challenges of such a complex reunion. We also dish on all the awkward and completely inappropriate things people have said to us about being adopted. We also chat about the adoptee rights movement and adoptee advocacy and activism.
