Welcome to May 10, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate nutty bridges and strange finds. The Lewis and Clark Bridge spans the Columbia River, serving as an important link between Oregon and Washington. But just a few miles away in Longview, is a lesser known bridge called the Nutty Narrows. In 1963, Longview resident Amos Peters was distressed by the number of squirrels that died trying to make it across the busy street near his office. So he constructed a 60-foot suspension bridge between two trees that allowed the squirrels to pass the street safely. If you happen to be in Longview stop by and see it along with the statue erected in Mr. Peters' honor. On National Washington Day, we celebrate the Evergreen State, the only state named after a US president. If you're a fan of the reality tv show, Storage Wars then you know that buyers bid on the contents of abandoned storage units, sight unseen. It's not unusual to discover hidden treasures in the trash and the net gain can be astounding. One of the strangest items ever unearthed were chicken eyeglasses. It turns out that this accessory was used in the 1940s and 50s to keep chickens from pecking their eyes out. They also made the birds appear quite stylish. If it's been awhile since you've cleaned up your own room, consider the hidden treasure that could be lurking in your house and on National Clean Up Your Room Day, celebrate with a good Spring cleaning. Bant Breen is the Founder and Executive Chairman for Qnary, an award-winning executive reputation management and talent branding company. As more people appear online, it's become clear that their name searches need to be cleaned up and more professional. Qnary's company grew dramatically during the pandemic because your online presence matters more than ever, and executives understand this. In this episode, Bant talks about what executives should be thinking about when it comes to their online reputation, how to best reduce “bad” instances in your online presence, and why how you show up online really does matter more than you might think. Tips on improving your online presence Do an analysis on how you show up today in the search results. Are you happy with the results? Executives might not think it matters. It does. Future recruits are looking you up! How do you want future employees to see you? Reporters want to cite you as a source, but you need a strong and respectable presence to do that. Do you have your credentials? Do you look reliable? Are your articles/thoughts properly linked? Bible Reading: Genesis 1:1, 26-31; Romans 8:19-23"There's a cleanup at the beach today to celebrate Earth Day," Dad said at breakfast. "Volunteers are needed to walk along the beach and pick up any trash they find. Why don't we go help?"Diego made a face. "I don't want to pick up other people's trash! It's not my job to clean up after them." "It's true we're all responsible for our own trash and should not throw it on the beach," said Dad. "But, sadly, littering is still a problem, and one way to help fix it is to work together to clean it up. We all need to help take care of the beautiful world God gave us."Diego still didn't look convinced. "Think of it this way," Dad told him. "Remember what happened to your bike last winter? You left it lying under a bush behind the garage, and by the time the snow melted, it was all rusted. Your mom and I trusted you to take care of it."Diego sighed. "But I didn't.""Well, God made this world for us to enjoy--and that's way more important than a bike," said Dad. "The trash that people leave pollutes God's creation. It makes the beautiful beach look messy, and it may even kill or injure fish, animals, and birds that live in or near the ocean." Dad paused. "Do you remember who God created in His own image and put in charge of all the living creatures in Genesis, the first book of the Bible?""Adam and Eve," said Diego. "So, does that mean we're in charge of them too?"Dad nodded. "As people made in His image, God has given us the job to take care of His creation--and as people who trust in Jesus, we've also been given the job to share the hope of Jesus with the world. One small way to do that is to pick up other people's trash, because that's like what Jesus did for us--He removed our sins! And even though we can't fix everything that's wrong in the world, Jesus can, and one day He will when He returns to make all things new."Diego thought for a moment. "Okay. Let's go help with the beach cleanup." -Jacqueline J. LeaycraftHow About You?Are you thankful for the beautiful world God created for us? Are you doing what you can to take care of it? Today is Earth Day. Check to see if there are any activities in your area that you can participate in to help protect the earth and keep it clean--or come up with your own!
