As part of our ReCONNECT NC series, the Institute for Emerging Issues is identifying groups of communities where something remarkable is happening. The challenge for all of the communities is working on civic participation with people who have lost a sense of working across boundaries. This week’s First in Future guest is Russ Haddad, the Director of Community and Economic Engagement at Elizabeth City State University, and he is heading up one of the communities that the Institute for Emerging Issues is working with, that is focused on getting a excited group of students called Viking Volunteer Corps working on the challenges in their community. We learn from Russ about the responsibility that a university has to be part of the community it serves, the importance of asset-based community development, and why students are so excited about their work in the community.

According to the Institute for Emerging Issues at NC State, people in North Carolina are feeling more disconnected than ever and they want to do something about it. So IEI launched a three-year initiative called ReCONNECT NC and this week hundreds of people convened in Raleigh to focus on reconnection between rural and urban areas. The Institute’s Director Leslie Boney joins us talk about the challenges and what they’ve learned so far. We also talk to Wake County School Board Member Keith Sutton who makes some news with an announcement on the show. The Institute for Emerging Issues, as part of our ReCONNECT NC series, is trying to figure out how communities can get more people at the table to help their towns solve the big problems they are facing. The idea that the rural and urban parts of our state seemed to be getting further and further apart, and this is on the minds of North Carolinians. This idea of disconnection to each other in job opportunities or kinds of health care options are an area that the Institute for Emerging Issues has recognized. We are conveying around the state over the next three years to ReCONNECT NC and talk about solutions.
