NAPAWF has been hard at work with their latest report entitled “Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Community: Understanding Barriers to Access in Georgia”.  Fajer is a skilled legal advocate with substantial experience in organizing, policy, and legislative advocacy related to reproductive rights and justice, racial equity, survivor justice, and immigrant healthcare. Prior to her work with NAPAWF, she was a senior advisor with the Coalition to Expand Contraceptive Access; a consultant with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders; a consultant with the Center for Reproductive Rights, as well as other stops.  NAPAWF is the only organization dedicated to uplifting and building power with AANHPI women and girls in the US. Employing a reproductive justice framework to guide their work, they use organizing, advocacy, and communications strategies to assert full agency over our lives, our families, and our communities. Working with the Emory University Center for Reproductive Health Research in the Southeast (RISE), this latest report by NAPAWF seeks to uncover the systemic barriers Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women and gender-expansive individuals face in accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH). Financial instability due to mental health issues exacerbates food insecurity, leading to anxiety, depression, and stress. The inability to afford nutritious food impacts both physical and mental well-being, particularly in children, who face higher rates of mental health issues and school absenteeism. The Food Foundation calls for policies addressing the cost of healthy food, benefit levels, and extending nutritional support programs to alleviate these intertwined crises. On October 7, 2023, Israelis faced the unthinkable when Hamas militants breached the Gaza border, carried out a violent rampage, took hundreds of Israelis hostage, and indiscriminately slaughtered at least 1,300 people—mostly civilians, many of them women, children, and elderly. These attacks resulted in the most Jews killed in a single day since the Holocaust. On this week's episode, IPF Atid Director Shanie Reichman joins Tel Aviv-based journalist Neri Zilber to reflect on the darkest day in Israeli history. Effie Baldwin is a U.S. Army veteran, Positive Discipline Educator, Associate Member of the U.S. Golf Teachers Federation and the founder of Believing in a Better World LLC. After earning her Kemetic Yoga Certification in Egypt, she became an instructor for Veterans Yoga Project then later a board member for the nonprofit. She's also an End-of-Life Doula and facilitates Emotional Emancipation Circles to promote healing caused by race-based discrimination within communities of African-descent.Prior to becoming her own boss, Effie spent almost 30 years working in high-level positions with the state and federal government in Senior Policy, Grants Administration, and Program Management—and despite this long list of accolades, she admits that her greatest accomplishment is raising two life-embracing adult children. In this conversation, Effie explains the similarities between Kemetic Yoga and golf as two activities that people can do “from cradle to grave,” and the virtues and ethics that are necessary for both: patience, honesty, mindfulness, focus, discipline—all with the result of self-regulation and self-responsibility. Effie came to yoga through, running, of all things. That is to say, she literally ran herself into the ground and yoga was prescribed by a nurse practitioner as a way to rebuild her immune system and ease her pattern of intensity throughout life. It changed the trajectory of her life, and for the last six years, she's added that to her repertoire of service-oriented work. She's a self-proclaimed optimistic realist, a way of viewing the world through practicality and positivity, giving people and situations the benefit of the doubt. She also recalls questioning the “rules of engagement” very early and crafting a life of learning, growing and independently investigating the truth—as she calls it—to decide what made sense for her own happiness, not what was projected onto her from society. We end by highlighting the importance of nurturing the children of our communities and pouring love and energy into youth, whether they are your own kids or not. The next generation need us to show up as positive, responsible and whole-hearted role models just as we need them to carry on the legacy of our families and improve the impact we have on this planet.Believing in a Better WorldSupport the showConnect with Feathered Pipe Ranch: FacebookInstagramSubscribe to our NewsletterCheck out 2023 Retreats

Arlyssa Heard struggles with crushing debt from student loans and a high-interest car payment. The single mom was excited to get a promotion at her job, but did not want a huge raise. “The extra $150 extra take-home in my paycheck meant losing benefits worth far more,” she said. Detroit residents like Heard hear over and over again they're to blame for their financial situations and the state of their neighborhoods. They're told they can pull themselves up by the bootstraps if only they try hard enough. Yet the system that's supposed to help Arlyssa keeps her from getting ahead. Our current economic system is not working to improve the lives of people in this city. Every day, Detroiters are struggling to make ends meet while enduring exploitative, poverty-wage jobs and punitive, deficit-based social support programs. For decades now, Detroit has been ranked among the cities with the highest rates of poverty. As a native Detroiter, this sobering reality hits home. Detroiters deserve better…Detroiters demand better! Guaranteed income is a powerful tool. More than 100 community groups and faith leaders, residents and businesses have signed a letter to elected officials demanding that Detroit join the growing number of municipalities with a guaranteed income pilot. The goal is to push for a federally-funded guaranteed income by demonstrating the benefits. By setting aside at least $1.5 million in ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) dollars – to be matched by a philanthropic partner – we can invest in our Detroit neighbors immediately and lay the groundwork for much-needed changes to our social support systems. Here's how it works: Participants get recurring cash payments that they can use however they want, without any restrictions or preconditions. (Guaranteed income is different from Universal Basic Income, which distributes cash transfers to an entire population. Rather, guaranteed income distributes cash to a specific group of individuals who experience systemic challenges inadequately addressed by current programs.) Direct cash is a proven tool that works. Data from multiple guaranteed income pilots across the country—as well as the expanded monthly Child Tax Credit in 2021—have shown that direct cash payments are one of the most efficient and effective ways to lift people out of poverty. Participants experience drastic improvements to job prospects, food and housing security, financial stability, and their overall well-being and mental health. We have to let go of harmful stereotypes that people experience poverty due to their own failings. We need to embrace a policy shift that recognizes that Detroit residents are experts in their own lives. People need investment in their goals and full control over their choices. They deserve the dignity to choose their pathways to economic mobility. “We've made plenty of gains and we keep on climbing, but we aren't at the level where we should be,” said Heard, who signed the letter calling for a guaranteed income. “We need this because when we benefit, everyone else benefits.” What we've been doing to reduce poverty in this city isn't working. Poverty is a policy choice, and as Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure, the guaranteed income.” In this upcoming budget cycle, Detroit has an opportunity to take a step in this direction by making an investment in its greatest asset, the people. He had Covid three times and had to scream for medical attention through his door before a nurse finally showed some humanity and got him desperately needed medicine that helped him when he was at his worst. He rang the bell for the fellas on the inside and shared the story of how correctional officers refused to serve the incarcerated food because of their fear of contracting Covid. He shared how he heard the shrieks of men who were dying of Covid in their cells without receiving help for a month. He shared how he saw the dead bodies of those who succumbed to Covid, due to the lack of medical attention at the prison. This is the real trauma that is hidden from the public eye everyday. June is Pride Month. We recognize the contributions lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/queer plus individuals have made to society--and the continued urgency of their struggle. The LGBTQ+ community has had to fight for acceptance, inclusion, and civil rights in a society that has historically shunned their very existence. The LGBTQ+ community continues to face many obstacles to their individual mental health and well-being, and this has never been more true than in the summer of 2022. In this episode we explore gender affirming care as a form of trauma-informed care, and what it means to try to be trauma-informed for a community in peril. Our guests are Eli Lawrence, Clinical Supervisor of Behavioral Health for Waterloo Counseling Center; and Andrea Segovia, Senior Policy and Field Advisor for Trans Education Network of Texas. In this third episode, we discussed the challenges that Big Tech confronts us with in terms of regulation. The platform economy has fundamentally changed our societies and has made more and more citizens dependent on less and less companies. Due to lobbying efforts as well as ignorance and incompetence on many policy levels, this sector has massively expanded without much government oversight. The US has started talking about splitting up Facebook, but critics warn that this is not sufficient. Farwa Sial zoomed in on the regulatory problems and trends that intellectual monopolies and the platform economy have raised. We asked her: How has the lack of data regulation enabled the rise of Big Tech? Why are the current competition policy frameworks falling short of regulating intellectual monopolies? What kind of regulation do we need to regain control and empower the public domain? Farwa Sial is a Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer in Development Finance at Eurodad and a Research Fellow at the Global Development Institute (GDI) University of Manchester. What are the effects of growing debt piles for the public heath care sector in the Global South? How can we prevent that IMF austerity measures will arrest development efforts in the next decade? That has irked the left. Lil Pump, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent (before retracting), Ice Cube (working with the campaign on his plan for the black community), and others are rocking the boat prompting John Legend to quip at a Biden rally: “Some of your former favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies…”This follows Chelsea Handler reminding her ex-beau, 50 Cent, that “he was a Black person, so he can’t vote for Donald Trump.”•To celebrities on the left, this is treasonous. They believe that minorities should vote alike and think alike and they dictate that it has to be for the left, not the right. To them, it’s bad enough that black people would choose not to support someone on the left. However, they are adding injury to insult by using their platform to encourage others to consider the policies of President Trump.•Now, even black America’s “auntie” is speaking out. Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters so upset, she is withholding her forgiveness of independent-thinking blacks for supporting President Trump. Waters may never forgive blacks for being independent thinking, but her forgiveness is not what expands opportunities, reduces poverty, and makes their neighborhoods safer or more prosperous. Pro-growth policies of tax cuts, deregulation, criminal justice reform, and smart policing reform do.

Agnès Hubert built her entire career on fighting discrimination and promoting gender equality  – as a senior advisor to the European Commission Presidents, a founder of the first European feminist think-tank in Brussels, as a professor and a recognised author on EU gender equality policy. Throughout her 30 years lasting career of a senior civil servant at the European Commission, she focused mainly on development, social innovation, gender and social policies. In her interview with Lucia Klestincova for Lights on Europe, she shares her experience of past decades of feminist claims and achievements within European policies and what kind of work is still ahead of us. She’s still active in shaping the EU’s gender policies as a founder of the GENDER FIVE PLUS think tank and as a professor of gender policies at the College of Europe in Bruges and at Science-Po in Paris. How does she see the future of gender activism? Where is the link between the attacks on gender studies at university and the rise of populism? Agnes calls on her listeners to recognise that gender equality is THE topic of the next decade. It will serve all of us in pushing humanity away from the production madness that brought us where we are, towards greater compassion and reproduction of our businesses, planet and families.

Episode 138: Wait, didn’t we just talk last week about the attacks on government workers? Well, a week doesn’t go by when another attack against people, who keep our society working, is launched by this administration—this time it’s the workers at the Environmental Protection Agency. AFGE Local 1236 Bethany Dreyfus joins me to give us the lowdown on the draconian rules imposed just days ago. I can’t add to the descriptions of the daily despicable conditions faced by migrants and refugees at the southern border. Instead, what I wanted to do today is go the root of what brought so many to flee their homes—what made people refugees? It’s economic oppression, corruption, the lack of the rule of law—all blessed, supported, encouraged and funded by the U.S. I look at this in two conversations. First, Vicki Gass, Senior Policy expert for Central America and Mexico for Oxfam, describes why people become refugees. And, then, Gladys Cisneros the Solidarity Center’s country program director in Mexico, digs into whether changes in Mexico’s labor law system, especially the process of enforcement, are significant enough to believe that a new NAFTA treaty wouldn’t simply be a new, continuing blank check for corporations to exploit workers. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3

The idea that the rural and urban parts of our state seemed to be getting further and further apart, and this is on the minds of North Carolinians. This idea of disconnection to each other in job opportunities or kinds of health care options are an area that the Institute for Emerging Issues has recognized. We are conveying around the state over the next three years to ReCONNECT NC and talk about solutions. Today's First in Future guest, Senior Policy and Program Manger at the Institute for Emerging Issues, Sarah Langer Hall, has been working on a variety of these issues over the past few years and leads our ReCONNECT NC series.

Hurricane Florence really couldn’t have come at a worse time or in a worse way for farmers in southeastern North Carolina. Many farmers were still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Matthew two years ago. And because Florence came earlier than Matthew, there were more crops still in the field. This week's First inFuture guest, Scott Marlow with the Rural Advancement Foundation International, or RAFI, has seen how this plays out before. His job is to help farmers figure out what to do next. There are plenty of folks available to help – Farm Services, Cooperative Extension, FEMA and others. RAFI looks for gaps and tries to fill them. Listen to what Scott has to say about the stages of recovery for a farmer after a disaster and looking forward. If you are a farmer looking for advice and support RAFI’s Farm Survival Hotline is 866-586-6746, or you can go to rafiusa.org.

Frank is a Senior Policy and Research Analyst at the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education. His new book, due out in March of 2016, offers a comparative look at the education policies and outcomes in six countries - Chile, Cube, Sweden, Finland, Canada, and the United States. Frank and his co-editors selected these countries because collectively they span a range of education policy approaches – from neoliberal approaches that emphasize school vouchers to social democratic approaches that emphasize government’s responsibility for education.

ABSTRACT: There are certain universal conditions of a city and of housing that, if codified, can help architects and planners achieve a successful outcome. 'Urbanity', by contrast, as Richard Sennett argues is the making use of differences in a city to help people achieve a balanced sense of identification as well as a view on risk taking. In mæ's work we consider how codes, patterns and computational methodologies or parametric modeling assist or hinder design opportunity and what are the implications for the people that we design for? BIOGRAPHY: Alex Ely is an Architect and founding partner at mæ LLP Architects. He is a CABE Enabler, Building for Life Assessor and former Senior Policy adviser at CABE. Alex leads the mæ's work on sustainable urbanism and housing, working with a wide range of local authorities, public agencies and Housing Associations on housing regeneration, masterplanning, and new build housing design. He has written a number of best practice publications including The London Mayor's Housing Design Guide, CABE's Building for Life Standard and accompanying publication 'Delivering Great Places to Live' and 'The Home Buyer"s Guide'. Alex lectures internationally on design and policy.
