What would change if we gave athletes a real framework for understanding RED-S — before something went wrong? That's the question driving Hannah Ballowe's entire career right now. Hannah is a professional middle-distance runner, PhD student at NC State, and women's health researcher whose dissertation is focused on creating and validating a REDs-specific screening tool. She's also a former Virginia Tech runner who, despite training with a coach who presented on nutrition, didn't learn what RED-S actually was until she was out of college — and noticed she wasn't alone in that. Heather and Hannah talk through what the culture around fueling, periods, and body image actually looked like on her college team, the comparison trap that nearly consumed her freshman year, the summer she tried eating less and almost passed out at the finish line, and what she's building now to make sure the next generation of athletes has better tools. They also talk about her path to training professionally with coach Lori Hennis in Raleigh, what it's like to balance a PhD and elite training, and her very specific plan to one day run 100 miles. Hoos Dominate NC State, Impress In All 3 Facets; 5 Takeaways From The Hoos Win Vs The Wolfpack by Jerry Miller
Doeren said at halftime that the wide receivers needed to get open.Ethan's answer: the wide receivers who do get open, you let them walk. You told The Athletic last week that you picked the offensive line over them. And we all know you picked CJ Bailey over them. That exchange is the show. Virginia 34, NC State 8, and we spent 85 minutes on how it happened. The argument worth staying for is the one about roster construction. Ethan's case is that Virginia put together a masterclass and NC State looked like a team that overpaid its quarterback and lost every piece around him. Virginia decided they did not care who played quarterback, took a running quarterback, built a very good offensive line and a very good defense, and took four to five yards a carry all afternoon. His line: they got smoked in the front office. The follow-up is the uncomfortable one. If the number really was three to four million for Bailey, would you rather have paid seven fifty to a million at quarterback and put the other two and a half million on defense? And his point is not that you paid a quarterback, it is which quarterback you paid, because last year the receivers were elevating Bailey and now those receivers are gone. Also in here: why Virginia never faced a third and long, how a long fourth-quarter-style drive with four fourth down conversions took the life out of the building, Harvey Dyson getting only eight pass rushing snaps, Popo Aguirre's 18 tackles that did not matter, and the NFL roster cuts including two undrafted Wolfpack who made 53-man rosters.Where we landed: Layton came down from 10-2 to 8-4. Greg is staying at 9-3. Ethan never moved off 8-4.10 days until Richmond. Fox Sports' lead College Football analyst Joel Klatt reacts to the first games of the college football season as Week Zero officially kicked off the year. He begins by reacting to #14 USC's 16-point win over San Jose State and dives into whether Trojan fans should be excited or concerned with what they saw from the Trojans – and also gives his thoughts on the low fan attendance at the Coliseum for the opener. Klatt also discusses Bill Belichick's North Carolina team pulling off the upset of TCU and whether we may have jumped to a conclusion on the Belichick era in Chapel Hill too early. Klatt shouts out Virginia for their blowout win and evaluates their potential to be this year's Indiana in the ACC. Klatt also reacts to Memphis' upset win over UNLV and it's ramifications on the Group of 6 Playoff chase. He discusses Florida State's lackluster win and explains why FSU is not the power they once were and how things could be about to go off the rails in Tallahassee.Klatt wraps the show up by breaking down the latest eligibility issue in the sport as NFL players try to come back for one more year of college football, explaining how we got into this mess and where he stands on it – while pointing out a particular group that nobody's talking about that is being negatively impacted as a result. The Fast Lane with Ed Lane: Monday, August 31, 2026
The national folks just don't pay attention. The Virginia team that pummeled NC State into submission in a game that finished out with a 34-8 final score, and wasn't that close, is who we thought they were – deep at every position group, and fine-tuned after a near-miss at a berth in the CFP.
College football is officially back, and Week 0 gave us plenty to chew on before the season really gets rolling. We start with North Carolina getting some revenge on TCU in Ireland, then turn to Virginia's emphatic win over NC State and a huge opening performance from Beau Pribula. How much should we believe after one game, and which results actually changed the way we see these teams? From there, we work through USC's somewhat misleading final score against San Jose State, Florida State's uneven opener against New Mexico State and a late-night Memphis-UNLV game that may have made the Group of Six playoff race a little more interesting. We also discuss Stanford's dramatic finish against Hawaii and the very different FBS welcome parties for North Dakota State and Sacramento State. Plus, the return of college football meant the debut of some noticeable changes to the TV experience. We review ESPN's post-BottomLine world, the new on-screen indicator showing which announcer is speaking, a pronunciation controversy involving Beau Pribula and one moment of sweet Eastern Pennsylvania vindication. ESPN's Top 100 College Football Players list sparks controversy as major programs like Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida State, and USC are shockingly underrepresented. Are media biases shaping national perception—and which elite talents like Florida State's Duce Robinson and Notre Dame's Braunte Johnson as just a few of the overall examples. The conversation exposes inconsistencies in ESPN's rankings, questioning the logic behind power program omissions and the network's impact on college football narratives. The discussion shifts to NC State's matchup with Virginia, spotlighting CJ Bailey's NFL-caliber potential, Duke Scott's breakaway speed, and NC State's favorable schedule as possible factors in an ACC title run. Key matchups—like Virginia's veteran O-line against NC State's defense—take center stage, along with the broader issue of limited media access and its effect on coverage. Can the Wolfpack capitalize on their soft slate, or will another “what the heck” upset strike? Don't miss this critical breakdown and spirited listener debate. Support us by supporting our sponsors! Jeff Howe and Hank South explain why Hollywood Smothers could become one of the most dangerous weapons in Steve Sarkisian's offense. After catching a touchdown from Arch Manning during high-red-zone work, the former NC State running back continues to display the receiving ability that produced 56 catches, only one drop and 25 missed tackles forced over the past two seasons. With Smothers and Raleek Brown available as checkdown options, Arch may no longer need to force plays or expose himself as a runner. The guys also reveal that Lance Jackson and Zina Umeozulu are being treated as co-starters opposite Colin Simmons. Their size, versatility and contrasting skill sets could give Will Muschamp several dangerous pass-rush combinations featuring Simmons, Raheem Biles, Brad Spence and Justice Terry.
