Over 12% of North Carolinians were living in poverty in 2024. However, a new report finds a much larger group in North Carolina still struggles to make ends meet. An additional 28% of the state's households earn above the federal poverty threshold but not enough to afford basic expenses. We discuss the study and the affordability crisis impacting families.

Genuine food insecurity in which people don't know where their next meal is coming from is a subject that merits a lot of attention. By any fair assessment the fact that literally millions of North Carolinians – a large percentage of them children – go to bed hungry in the world's richest nation is, or at least ought to be, a gigantic scandal. As grim as some of these numbers are, recent actions in Washington – most notably big cuts to federal food assistance and the rising prices caused by the war in Iran – have conspired to make the situation even more dire. Ever since Republicans captured control of the state legislature at the outset of the last decade, North Carolinians have been witness to a steady stream of proposals designed to make voting harder and more complicated and make the day-to-day oversight and regulation of elections more partisan. And now, with yet another national election of great importance just over five months away, new proposals are being introduced. One such measure in the state Senate would reduce the state's early voting period from 17 days to 10 despite the enormous bipartisan popularity of the current system. In addition, a series of proposals at the GOP-controlled state Board of Elections would make it easier to both toss out provisional ballots and mailed ballots on technicalities and restrict nondisruptive demonstrations designed to get voters to the polls. Last Thursday, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson said, "VinFast agreed to build a factory and create jobs for North Carolinians — it didn't do either."The statement accompanied a lawsuit against the EV maker for promises made, but not kept.Jackson filed the lawsuit against VinFast on behalf of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, alleging that the company breached agreements to develop an EV and battery manufacturing facility in Chatham County. Now, the state is trying to reclaim the property so it can find a new partner.About four years ago, the state's Economic Investment Committee awarded a Job Development Investment Grant to VinFast Manufacturing US, LLC. The company promised to create 7,500 jobs and invest more than $3 billion in an EV manufacturing facility. So where exactly do things stand, how does this compare to past public attitudes on foreign wars, and what's likely to be the key driver of public opinion during the 2026 election cycle? Today, a little over a year since his return to office, it's increasingly clear that most Americans do not believe he has delivered. In addition to a string of losses for Trump allies in a series of special elections, several new opinion surveys indicate that most Americans – including a  significant percentage of Republicans – are unhappy with rising costs of everything from housing to health care to groceries. And yet, despite these trends, Trump retains a core of strong supporters – and this is true in North Carolina – who remain loyal and willing to accept his characterization of the facts, even when they're contradicted by official statistics. In her role as CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, she drove conversations about the issues that the nation's newest generation of war veterans care about, including the need to modernize the VA, put an end to the veteran suicide crisis, and for Congress to reclaim it's War Powers' authority. It continues to be one of the great scandals of modern America that in the world's richest nation, millions of people – including an especially high percentage of children – suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Here in North Carolina, around one in seven people — including a quarter of our children — are burdened by food insecurity. And just to make the situation that much more outrageous and inexcusable, recent actions by federal and state elected officials to undermine SNAP food assistance and slash funding for anti-hunger nonprofits have made the situation significantly worse. The result: this year, more people than ever are struggling to feed their families. Amazingly, however, the good people doing anti-hunger work remain resilient and unbowed, and recently we got the chance to learn more about the needs in our community and how average folks can help in an extended conversation with the president and CEO of the Interfaith Food Shuttle, Ron Pringle. In Part One of our recent extended conversation with Interfaith Food Shuttle President and CEO Ron Pringle, we dug into the hunger crisis that currently afflicts North Carolina and how recent actions by federal and state lawmakers to slash funding for food assistance and nonprofits that aid people in need have made an already bad situation significantly worse. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark European anti-Christian hate crimes are overlooked The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe released a new report on anti-Christian crimes in Europe. The survey found such crimes are downplayed, under-reported, or politically overlooked. Anti-Christian hate crimes include vandalism, harassment, threats, physical assaults, and even murder.  The report noted, “Religion-related or religion-inspired violence may also stem from the perception of Christianity as a rival, inferior or adversarial faith . . . For example, some forms of violent ‘extremist' rhetoric portray Christians as ‘infidels' and ‘enemies of Islam' who must be subdued.” Converts from Islam to Christianity in Europe, especially women, were particularly at risk of violence or threats from family members.   Messianic Christian ministry seeing Israelis coming to Christ This month is the two-year anniversary of the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas, the Muslim terrorist organization Since then, Israelis have been turning to God during the ongoing war.  A new study found that the personal religiosity and spirituality of Jewish-Israeli students increased over the last two years.  Christian ministries in particular are seeing an uptick in interest. ONE FOR ISRAEL is a group devoted to bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Israelis. The ministry noted, “We have received a huge number of messages from seekers, exploring faith, and seen many come to faith during the war. We have mailed out hundreds of copies of the New Testament.” In Romans 1:16, the Apostle Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” J.D. Vance in Israel: Ceasefire will hold U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance visited Israel on Tuesday. He met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem yesterday. Vance expressed optimism at a press conference that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas would hold. Listen. VANCE: “A lot of our Israeli friends working together with a lot of Americans to actually mediate this entire ceasefire process, to get some of the critical infrastructure off the ground from the international security force so the reconstruction of Gaza. It's not easy. I never said it was easy, but what I am is optimistic that the ceasefire is going to hold, and that we can actually build a better future in the entire Middle East.” U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if Hamas violates their agreement, “an end to Hamas will be FAST, FURIOUS, & BRUTAL!” New North Carolina U.S. congressional map could help GOP In the United States, North Carolinian lawmakers approved a new congressional map yesterday. The revised map could help Republicans pick up an additional seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.  President Trump is encouraging GOP-led states to redistrict ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Texas and Missouri have already redrawn their U.S. House districts.  Barna: Americans don't believe drunkenness, gambling, & Sabbath-breaking are sinful Dr. George Barna, the Christian researcher, released his latest report on the worldview of Americans. The survey asked people about 12 specific behaviors, traditionally considered sinful. The study found a majority of U.S. adults still believe six of the behaviors are sinful. Those include lying or manipulating, abusing God's name, idol worship, sex outside marriage, pornography use, and illegal drug use. Respondents were split on three of the behaviors—abortion, sexual fantasies, and cheating on taxes.  And Americans dismissed the final three behaviors as not sinful—drunkenness, gambling, and Sabbath-breaking. The study identified three increasingly influential groups in American society: the adult portion of Gen Z, atheists and agnostics, and the Asian-American population. Dr. Barna noted, “Together, a majority of those groups approve of lying for personal benefit, sex on demand, abortion, idolatry, and various lifestyle vices.” Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.” Iceland lost its mosquito-free status And finally, Iceland just lost its mosquito-free status. Björn Hjaltason, an insect enthusiast, found three mosquitos in his garden last week.  Matthías Alfreðsson, an entomologist at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, confirmed they were mosquitoes of the species Culiseta annulata.   It's the first time scientists have confirmed mosquito findings in the wild in Iceland. However, it remains to be seen if they can survive the winter there. In January and February, the average temperature is 28 degrees.
