Track Title: Picture PerfectPerformed by: Neika SimoneWritten by: Toneika Simone Stephens-YoungProduced by: Churchboi, WritazblokGenre: R&B Bio:Relaxing jazz vibes with a touch of funk and soul, the lovely Neika Simone is enchanting audiences with her angelic vocals. Heartfelt and emotionally driven, her alluring songs express a range of emotions, exploring universal human concepts like love and heartbreak. Her highly acclaimed EP, Beautiful Moments, has been ascending the charts on SmoothJazz.com while her hit single, “My Door,” has maintained a stable spot at the top of The Urban Influencers list for R&B and Soul. Attracting audiences around the world, Neika Simone is offering her soothing sounds to ease heavy hearts. Born and raised in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, her devotion to music is a lifelong passion. The name “Simone” was given to her in honor of the iconic vocalist, Nina Simone. It proved fitting for the aspiring artist, as Neika began singing at a young age in her hometown church youth choir. Soon after, her parents enrolled her in piano lessons at the age of 7. As a teenager, she started writing songs of her own. Shy and quiet, her talent gave her great confidence and served as an outlet for expression. A classically trained pianist and vocalist, in her later years of high school, Neika's teacher encouraged her to apply for music scholarships. She auditioned and was offered funding to study under one of the best music industry programs in the state. Neika attended Elizabeth City State University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in piano. She later attended Norfolk State University to obtain her Master's in Music Education with a focus on voice. As Neika Simone continued to grow as an artist, she developed a deep admiration for jazz. She was initially drawn to the genre after her first studio experience. In college, she attempted to add vocals to projects for other students in her program. After an ad libbed session, she was quickly dismissed, as the producers were looking for singers geared more toward hip-hop. She received great praise, however, for a voice well suited to the nuances of jazz. From there, her descent into the style progressed naturally. Neika discovered how much she admired the classiness, elegance, and sophistication of great vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, and Sarah Vaughn. She held a reverence for the qualities they express in their music and their grace as phenomenal women in general. For a brief period, major events took precedence in Neika Simone's life, and the music stopped. She took a step back to navigate hardships such as health complications from endometriosis, divorce, and grief after the passing of her brother. As life began to settle, Neika needed to return to her true path. Music had previously been a constant in her life, so she shifted her focus back in that direction. She returned to her studies, reacquainting herself with chord progression, music theory, concept, and structure. Currently living in Richmond, Virginia, she met jazz musicians in the local scene and quickly found a band seeking Motown singers. Neika sang with them for several months, and soon, she met the manager of The Recliners. She worked with the group for a short time, until they disbanded. The remaining singers created a new band, Left Turn Right, who played and performed high energy shows. Neika also sang with the group, Fouray. With support from her friend and bandmate, Victor Nelson, she dove back into songwriting. Their combined efforts led to the release of the track, “My Door,” and Nelson also helped with her first EP, Beautiful Moments. Things picked up and Neika's career saw a boost of momentum. In November of 2021, she released the single, “Sweet Craving,” followed by her EP in February of 2022. Other names in the industry who have helped her along the way include Hanan Lane, Brandon Lane, and Gerard Johnson. These talented musicians, along with many others, have been essential in her growth as a songwriter. Neika Simone has learned many lessons about music, life, and love. Although the journey has been difficult and discouraging at times, she is tenacious and her efforts have been well spent. Singer, songwriter, and performer, she is also a music instructor for students of all age groups in chorus, voice, and piano. Teaching is a major part of who Neika is, having done so since her early twenties. With a longing to inspire others, she is sharing advice with students and audiences alike. “Life doesn't always give you what you want,” she explains. “Sometimes you have to work for it. You have to wait for it. You have to be persistent.”Grateful for the unrelenting support of her loving parents and husband, Neika Simone believes there are no wasted experiences. Even the painful moments provide valuable opportunities to learn. Neika takes these experiences and finds perspective, which she shares in her work. Her songs are real and relatable accounts of love, heartbreak, and hope. Neika encourages listeners, grounding and healing others with her comforting songs. A teacher with saintlike patience, she is helping those around her let go of their pain with relatable lyrical content. Filled with uplifting energy, Neika Simone allows audiences to relax as the melody, the words, and the rhythm washes over them.Social Links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NeikaSimoneInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/neika_simone/Twitter: https://twitter.com/NeikaSimone

Florida A&M University professor and former Miss FAMU Kimberly Brown Pellum, Ph.D., recently released her book, Black Beauties: African American Pageant Queens in the Segregated South (History Press, 2020). The book explores the glamorous history of African American beauty queens by using the stories of former contestants to address colorism and racism still prevalent in the industry. “My mother and grandmother took me to parades to see Miss Alabama State and Miss Tuskegee University…I loved the glamour,” Pellum said. “I wrote the book to capture that experience and address the politics of beauty within our own culture.” Kimberly Brown Pellum served as the model for the new Rosa Parks monument in Montgomery, Alabama. The allure of pageants, Pellum said, often masked the social and political challenges experienced by contestants. She said their personal stories not only illustrated their unique definitions of beauty, but also served to explain the political identities contestants created for themselves in the quests for their crowns. “So often, public discourse about black beauty is narrated by persons without an intimacy or expertise in the culture. Black beauty is a topic often exploited. This book lifts and centers the voices of black women,” she said. Pellum specializes in the history of women's images and southern culture. Her contributions include work at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, the Rosa Parks Museum and Google's Arts & Culture series. Pellum, Miss FAMU 2005, was used as the model for the Rosa Parks statue erected in Montgomery, Ala., in fall 2019. Pellum specializes in the history of women’s images and southern culture. Her contributions include work at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, the Rosa Parks Museum and Google’s Arts & Culture series. Pellum, Miss FAMU 2005, was used as the model for the Rosa Parks statue erected in Montgomery, Ala., in fall 2019. Pellum is also the director of the digital archives project, The Museum of Black Beauty. Latif Tarik is Assistant Professor of History at Elizabeth City State University located in Elizabeth City, NC. We Are Worth Fighting For: A History of the Howard University Student Protest of 1989 (NYU Press, 2019) is the first history of the 1989 Howard University protest. The three-day occupation of the university’s Administration Building was a continuation of the student movements of the sixties and a unique challenge to the politics of the eighties. Upset at the university’s appointment of the Republican strategist Lee Atwater to the Board of Trustees, students forced the issue by shutting down the operations of the university. The protest, inspired in part by the emergence of “conscious” hip hop, helped to build support for the idea of student governance and drew upon a resurgent black nationalist ethos. At the center of this story is a student organization known as Black Nia F.O.R.C.E. Co-founded by Ras Baraka, the group was at the forefront of organizing the student mobilization at Howard during the spring of 1989 and thereafter. We Are Worth Fighting For explores how black student activists—young men and women— helped shape and resist the rightward shift and neoliberal foundations of American politics. This history adds to the literature on Black campus activism, Black Power studies, and the emerging histories of African American life in the 1980s. Joshua C. Myers teaches Africana Studies in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University. He serves on the editorial board of The Compass and is editor of A Gathering Together: Literary Journal. Andy Albright's MOVE: Principles For Getting The Best Results

The text was so simple, but the meaning behind the two words carried more weight than most would ever imagine. It was a hot day in July of 2015 in Burlington, N.C. during The Alliance’s “Leadership Conference” that is now known as “Family Reunion.” Terry Edwards had finally convinced his wife, Tia to attend a big event after asking her to attend for months. She finally agreed, but she was far from sold on being in the life insurance business. That thinking changed as Tia sat in the women’s seminar on the first day of the event, listening to the women of The Alliance share their inspirational and emotional stories. Tia, holding the couple’s newborn daughter, Taylor in her lap, was moved to tears as she heard Hollie Davies share her personal story. Any prior doubts she had were now gone. Terry was in another meeting space at the men’s seminar when the text showed up on his phone. “We’re home,” the text from Tia read. “It took me being at that event and seeing and hearing these women share their heart and stories to know that we were right where we needed to be, and I knew we were with the right people too,” Tia said. That’s the good news. To fully understand the journey of Terry and Tia Edwards, you have to go back and learn about the struggle to even find The Alliance and wind up as Agency Managers in 2019. The couple met in middle school, started dating in high school in January of 1994 (Terry was a junior and Tia was a freshman), went to Elizabeth City State University together and got married in 2001. The couple always talked about what they wanted their life to be like together even in high school. Nice house, yard full of kids, good jobs and all the “American Dream” stuff most people desire. They both got good jobs, but moved around North Carolina every couple years as Terry continued being promoted in different parts of the state. Eventually, the couple started a cleaning business as their “side hustle.” It was going so well they worked seven days a week and had to order staff to help keep up with the work. In 2009, Terry discovered network marketing and his mind started thinking bigger in terms of what income level is possible. They earned around $2,000 monthly in network marketing, but the way it changed the couple’s thinking was far more important. Full-time jobs, a janitorial business and network marketing … that’s a lot for any young couple. Something was missing, however. They wanted children, but doctor’s couldn’t explain why it wasn’t happening. Thinking it wasn’t going to happen, the Edwardses focused on adoption. Instead of adopting one child, the couple ended up adopting three children – at the same time! Immediately, Isaiah (2), Anaya (3) and Elijah (4) were adopted in 2010 on Father’s Day weekend. “That increased my drive,” Terry said. “I was focused on providing a future and a legacy for my children to follow.” Fast forward to February of 2015 and life was even sweeter. Terry just accepted his dream job as the CEO of a credit union in Atlanta, Ga. Even better, Tia was four months pregnant with Taylor at the same time. The couple packed up and moved from their house in Kernersville, N.C., sold their janitorial business and leased a home in Georgia. They hadn’t even sold their home in N.C. When Terry went to start his new job, the job offer was rescinded. With no job, a growing family to provide for and bills rolling in; Terry didn’t know how he was going to cover the bills with only his network marketing deal bringing money in. “We had double bills and what was coming in was not going to cover everything,” Terry said. “I got on the computer and searched craigslist.” Jason Mathis had posted a simple ad that read, “too many leads, not enough agents.” Edwards spoke to Mathis, got licensed and started running business quickly. Following The Alliance system, he banked $8,000 in the first 30 days. “I didn’t have anything to lose so why wouldn’t I give it a shot?” Terry said. “Tia was still skeptical then, but it was working.” Tia still was skeptical. She wasn’t sure if it was because she was pregnant or what, but she couldn’t understand why Terry was always on his phone … all day long it seemed. “I had never seen a deal where you could make that much money so fast,” Tia said. After being asked repeatedly by Mathis to go see The Alliance corporate headquarters and meet president and CEO Andy Albright, Edwards finally drove to Burlington, N.C. If he was “all in” before, his belief level reached new heights during his visit. Terry watched Brant Swindle shoot a training video, attended The Wednesday Call and met with Andy Albright in his office after the show. That conversation forever changed Terry’s outlook on success. “What captivated me was that Andy was so plain spoken,” Terry recalls. “What he said was just common-sense stuff. I couldn’t believe you could act normal, be hugely successful and make millions like he has done. I had never seen anybody like Andy.” Terry asked Albright why he continued working so hard when he clearly didn’t have to. Why keep doing it? “Andy said, ‘you are right, my grandkids are taken care of. The problem is you can’t say the same thing,’” Terry remembers. “I instantly fell in love with Andy because I was looking for a place where I could belong, where I wasn’t looked upon as a dollar bill, and my dreams and my aspirations were No. 1. We just clicked. Jane Albright met Tia and we started really building a friendship. We found out we had more in common than we do separate.” After starting with The Alliance in April of 2015, the family moved back to their Kernersville, N.C.-house because they hadn’t even had time to sell it, after Terry’s “Dream Job” fell through. Terry and Tia won a Foresters cruise to the Bahamas and a trip to Banff, Canada in their first year with The Alliance. They got to know other agents even better on those trips. Almost five years later, it’s hard to belief how many things have happened to and for Terry and Tia since joining The Alliance. “It amazes me,” Terry says with a laugh. “It hasn’t lost its luster. I never want to get to a place where I think I got it. I know I still have to work on me and there’s another level to reach. There’s more to learn and I can be a better leader, so we can attract better people. We are not content or satisfied with good. We are shooting for great. We are not where we want to be, but we are not where we used to be either.” 2019 was a tremendous year of growth for Terry and Tia. They were able to realize their dream of opening a satellite office in Kernersville, a 1,700-square-foot space with offices for agents and a meeting space for 100 people when they host HotSpot meetings each Tuesday night. Looking to 2020, Terry and Tia have set even bigger goals. They want to reach Vice President before the year ends. They want to attract better leaders and lead from the front. They want to help other people find their 'why,' then show them how to make it happen. “It’s about knowing what it is that you want and then figuring out how to get it,” Terry said. “Being fanatical is about not stopping until you get what you want. Max out your capacity. Once you get one goal accomplished, there’s the next goal. Be better today than you were yesterday; but be better tomorrow than you were today. What do you want? What can you go through to get it? That’s fanatical.” Who knows what would have happened if Tia wasn’t in the audience to hear Hollie Davies speak at the women’s seminar holding Taylor back in 2015. There’s a good chance, life would look different Terry, Tia, Elijah (14), Anaya (13), Isaiah (11) and Taylor (4), but the good news is we will never know. Tia was there, and her commitment level went through the roof. A simple text she lovingly sent to her husband changed their lives forever. It helped change The Alliance for the better too. “We are at home,” Tia says. “This is the right place with the right people. 2020 is about going all in and being a better person than you were yesterday.”

On this edition of the Seven Ages Audio Journal, after news pertaining to the surprising results of DNA studies in West Africa and a Japanese experiment in search of answers about ancient seafaring, we turn our attention to one of the greatest controversies in modern science that unites the fields of archaeology, geology, and climate science: the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. Joining us to discuss it are two leading experts on the topic--a geoarchaeologist and a planetary scientist--who offer their perspectives on the latest developments in support of this hotly debated theory. Christopher R. Moore, PhD, is a geoarchaeologist and Special Projects Director with the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program. His research interests include site formation processes and geochronology of stratified sites in the southeastern Coastal Plain, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, early hunter-gatherer adaptations, lithic technology, and immunological blood residue analysis of stone tools. Chris is also the lead researcher of the White Pond Human Paleoecology Project and has authored and coauthored numerous papers on the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis including one documenting the presence of widespread Platinum anomalies at the Younger Dryas Boundary (YDB) as well as a recent paper on White Pond (near Elgin, SC) supporting the YD impact hypothesis. Malcolm Lecompte is a planetary scientist and remote sensing specialist. He holds a B.S. with Honors in Physics from the University of Wyoming and an MS in Astro-geophysics from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Astrophysical, Planetary and Atmospheric Sciences in 1984. Lecompte also became affiliated with the Naval Aviation reserve in 1980, and before ending his military flight career in 1991, compiled over 1,000 hours of military aircrew and private pilot time, officially retiring from the Naval Reserve as a Commander in 1998 after 23 years of active service. From 2004 until 2009, after a post-doctoral appointment at the Harvard College Observatory and Smithsonian Center Astrophysics (as well as a period managing DoD sponsored R&D projects), Lecompte held a faculty position as an Associate Professor and Research Director at Elizabeth City State University's Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research. Now retired, LeCompte has since devoted himself to investigating earth impacts during the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs by asteroid and comets. He is currently working in collaboration with colleagues at ECSU and other research organizations. With Dexter Scott How do you go from an unemployed father of four children to earning over a million dollars in commissions in less than three years?  By serving others. It may sound too good to be true but that’s exactly what Dexter L. Scott and his wife Tonya did after Dexter, who was the sole provider for his family, became a casualty of corporate downsizing just a few days before they were supposed leave for a  vacation in Italy. As you'll  hear, Dexter and his family went from living the American Dream to living the American Nightmare in one quick phone call.  All of the fear, the anguish and the frustration that follows losing your only source of income would’ve broken the average man down beyond repair. But what you are about to find out is that Dex, as I’ve known him as since we met on the campus of Elizabeth City State University, over twenty years ago is anything but average.  What he and his wife have been able to accomplish in the network marketing industry has been the stuff that that dreams and legends are made of. I could go on and on about his story but what I’d rather do is let him tell it in his own words so without further ado here is my fraternity brother, my friend, and millionaire entrepreneur Dexter L. Scott
