John Thomas joins me for episode 40. We chat about his book "Kalamazoo Gals", and the amazing story behind these women who built guitars for Gibson during the World War II era. John poured his heart and soul into this story and it forever impacted his life. After writing Kalamzoo Gals, John teamed up with musician Lauren Sheehan to record an album using several Banner Era Gibson guitars made by the Kalamzoo Gals. The song at the end of this episode is "Soldier's Joy", played by Lauren Sheehan (using a 1943 Southerner Jumbo) and John Schwab (using a 1943 L-50). Here's a tune I've been wanting to learn for a long time. I worked out an arrangement in D last week. Hope it's OK.

Dan serves up two beautiful traditional guitar tunes that you can play slow and steady: "Soldier's Joy" and "Wildwood Flower," which has been the starting point for generations of flat-pickers. The tunes are fairly easy to play, but you can make them consummately musical with careful study and attention to detail. This lesson includes Power Tab and is featured on the following CD compilations: HOW TO PLAY GUITAR: Anthology , ACOUSTIC U.
