Thoughts on the readings for March 17th (Leviticus 25, Psalms 135, 136, Luke 8)

Christadelphians Talk

Leviticus 25 tells of the year of the Jubilee (Hebrew, “Yobal”). This was the year of release for all manner of servitude; land reverted to the original family owner with the cancellation of all debts. It occurred every 50th year and began 49 years and 6 months after the completion of the previous Jubilee; and lasted for 1 year. Its commencement was marked by the sounding of the silver trumpet, which spoke of redemption. There are many incredible patterns associated with the Yobal, both in ancient times and also in the modern era. 1847 the series of lectures delivered by John Thomas, which produced the remarkable book “Elpis Israel” (at the same time Karl Marx released the Communist Manifesto in his book “Das Kapital”). 1897 was the first Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland, where Theodore Hertzl declared “today I founded the Jewish State”; which in fact occurred 50 years later on when in 1947 the United Nations Select Committee on Palestine, UNSCOP, decided to partition the Promised Land leading on to the declaration of the State of Israel on 14th May, 1948 (the flag of Israel was raised at midnight following that day – making it actually the 15th of May Jewish time; but the Declaration of the State of Israel had occurred on May 14th). Now for the chapter breakdown: Verses 1 to 7 Sabbath for the Land; Verses 8 to 13 The Year of Jubilee; Verses 14 to17 Regulations for sale and purchase; Verses 18 to 22 Exhortations against fear of shortages; Verses 23 to 24 Land rights ultimately belong unto Yahweh; Verses 25 to 28 Assistance to the poor to help with re-purchase; Verses 29to 34 Laws of house sales: Verses 29to 30 Metropolitan Verse 31 Country Verses 32 to 34 Houses and fields of the Levites Verses 35 to 38 Usury not to be taken from a brother; Verses 39 to 46 No Israelite to be made a bond slave, only of the Gentiles; Verses 47to 55 Redemption of a poor Israelite from servitude to a stranger. Psalms 135 and 136 speak of identical themes, but with slightly different words. The recurring phrase in Psalm 135 is the need to praise the name of Yahweh because of His mighty deeds on behalf of His people, Israel. The Psalm could be entitled, “Your Name, O Yahweh, endures forever”. The Psalmist traces God's awesome deeds performed on behalf of Israel from the time the patriarch Jacob, that is Israel, took possession of the Promised Land. The nation was our Sovereign's peculiar treasure, as verse 4 tells. The song traces the providence of the Almighty for His people as He delivered them from Egypt. It outlines their Maker's care for them in giving them victories over the giants of Sihon the king of the Amorites and Og, king of Bashan. Their Omnipotent Creator gave them the Land promised to their faithful forefathers. What power in heaven, or in earth, is comparable to our LORD's. The gods of the heathen are impotent idols. And as verse 18 declares, “They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusts in them.” Who is it that you have placed your trust in? Hopefully not in yourself. For what folly that would be! Hopefully you are not striving for material success. Again, how futile is that! But slowly read aloud the final three verses of the song and make the affirmation with the Psalmist, “Blessed be Yahweh out of Zion, who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise to Yahweh (Hallelujah)”. Psalm 136, as Psalm 135, commences by praising the creative might of our Omnipotent Creator. It once more outlines the Almighty's providential care for His people, Israel. The choir would sing of the victorious LORD and His triumphing over every foe of His people. Then the entire nation would acclaim that truth by uttering the refrain, “O give thanks to the Lord of lords…”, or “to the God of gods”; and similar phrases dotted throughout the Psalm. However the most pronounced; and greatly emphasised refrain is, “for His mercy endures for ever”. Repetition is a great tool for learning and understanding the core message of the Psalm. Never let us forget that, “OUR SOVEREIGN'S MERCY ENDURES FOR EVER”. And let us praise and thank Him constantly for that wonderful and dependable character of our God. Luke chapter 8 begins by naming some of the women who accompany our Lord and his Apostles. Among them was Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's nobleman (consider some of the difficulties this may have occasioned – perhaps very similar to Obadiah, the steward of Ahab; who had fed 100 of Yahweh's prophets during the great drought). The Parable of the Sower is taught, as the basis of understanding all of our Lord's parables. As we have seen it can be called the parable of the soils; as the seed sown is the same – it was the response that differed. The chapter then records an explanation from Jesus as to why our Lord spoke in parables. It was to reveal the message to the seekers and to confound the self righteous. The teaching by parables is a fulfilment of Christ's mission and is explained in Psalm 78:1-4 and Isaiah 6:1-13. Then follows the parable of the lamp on the table which outlines the disciple's responsibility to spread the Gospel. Jesus' mother and brothers, being concerned for him, seek to curtail his preaching. They are told to join the supporters rather than those who are slowing down God's work. Next Jesus calms a storm demonstrating that he is indeed the Son of God (see Psalm 107 verses 23 to 32). The chapter then says that he heals the man called Legion. Whose curing is proved by the destruction of the pigs. The Jews should not have been breeding these as the Law of Moses forbad it. The record follows with the curing of the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years (note Luke's ironic comments about his fellow doctors). Then Jesus raises the twelve year old daughter of Jairus (whose name means ‘enlightenment') and presents her alive to her parents. Christ shows that he is indeed the Good Shepherd of John 10 when he said to the child “little lamb arise”.

Thoughts on the readings for February 17th (Exodus 28, Psalms 83, 84, Mark 13)

Christadelphians Talk

Exodus 28 describes the clothing of the priests and of the High priest. The clothing of Aaron and his four sons was, verse 2, for glory and for beauty since they were the LORD's representatives. These garments were skilfully embroidered by Aholiab, whose name means “from the Father's tent”. John Thomas wrote about these clothes one and a half centuries ago saying, that what the High Priest wore on his person spoke of the inwrought character of the Lord Jesus Christ. Verse 4 describes the clothing common to all five men – a white turban; a linen robe; a golden coloured sash; and a coat of linen of checkered work appearance woven throughout with threads of blue, purple, scarlet and gold. The scarlet spoke of his lowly sin prone human condition. The blue talked of him being motivated, as the Father's only begotten Son, by the Word of God which permeated his thinking. The purple, being a mixture of red and blue, represents royalty. The gold was a token of tried and precious faith. The High Priest had two additional items attached to these garments – in the centre of his turban was a golden plate, which carried the engraved inscription, “Holiness to Yahweh” – speaking of the purpose of the High Priest's life. The second item was a golden breastplate with 12 compartments each one containing a rare and precious gemstone. And upon each of the gemstones was an engraving of each of the twelve tribes of Israel. The breastplate covered Aaron's heart. We sing a hymn that says, “the name of all the saints he bares, engraven on his heart”. (see verse 29). These, likewise, were a reminder of the High Priest's role in representing his people when he approached his God. Verses 15-22 tell of the type of stones (compare the picture presented in Revelation 21); and how they were arranged. The breastplate was attached to two golden rings – one on each shoulder – and tied in place by a blue line lace. This blue lace spoke of the heavenly calling. Verse 30 tells us that the Urim and Thummim were placed within the breastplate; presumably in the back of it for the front was filled with glistening gemstones. Urim means “lights” and Thummim (“fires”, or “perfections”). The Urim spoke of the perfection that was to be found in all of these 12 stones together – every member of the ecclesia of God is an essential part. The Thummim were placed in the back of the breastplate. These may have been a white stone, signifying acceptance (see Revelation 2 verses 17,; 3 verse 12); and a black stone for an unfavourable judgment. (As an aside, which doesn't relate to the clothing of the High Priest, the following Is submitted. The lot from the ephod is spoken of in the first book of Samuel several times. In the New Testament decisions by means of the casting of lots is referred to on a few occasions in the Acts of the Apostles – including for the replacement of Judas Iscariot in chapter 1). On the hem, or fringe (Hebrew “wing”, or “extremity”) of Aaron's robe was an embroidery of blue, purple and scarlet. And dangling from the bottom of that garment were alternating golden bells and pomegranates. The pomegranate speaks of the ecclesia: a multitude (of seeds), united in the blood of Christ, by the blood of the Covenant (the red juice) in One (fruit). And the bell of the gospel message, which when heard would tell of the Lord's life and its significance in gaining the victory over sin, saving the world, and having righteousness and eternal life gained by faithful believers. These were there, so the record says of the High Priest, “that he die not”. Later Leviticus tells of the High Priest elect being struck dead by God. Paul in writing to the Romans comments on the significance of the bell(Romans 10 verses14-18). Exodus 40 finishes by repeating that these clothes were “for glory and beauty”.

Review #21: Kalamazoo Gals by John Thomas

Guitar Books the Podcast

Is this one of the best or worst books for learning about vintage Gibson acoustic guitars? Kalamazoo Gals by John Thomas is a great book for vintage guitar enthusiasts, anyone curious about why folks are so crazy about vintage guitars, anyone generally interested in the Gibson guitar company and its founding, and anyone interested in the culture and society of the U.S. home front during World War II.  The author weaves the stories of the 1942 – 1945 Gibson “banner guitars,” the personal stories of the largely female workforce of the time, and the context of the wartime manufacturing regulations. This book does NOT teach you how to play the guitar - it is non-fiction novel.  John Thomas put a tremendous amount of research into this book, making multiple trips to Kalamazoo, MI (where the Gibson factory was located).  He presents his findings with a sense of humor, making for an enjoyable read. When many of the male employees at Gibson were sent off to fight in World War II, local women (the “Kalamazoo Gals”) stepped in to fill their shoes at the factory.  Despite heavy wartime regulations and an inexperienced, largely female workforce, Gibson built some of its most revered guitars – the “Banner Gibsons.”  Mysteriously, the Gibson company denies ever building these guitars! John Thomas sought out the Kalamazoo Gals for their first-hand accounts of working at the Gibson factory during WWII, and along the way he discovered their personal stories.  He poured through old shipping ledgers to decode Gibson's strange serial numbers system (or lack there-of) so that we can more accurately date these vintage guitars.  He X-rays a bunch of Banner Gibsons to discover exactly what made these guitars special.  Finally, he produced a musical album to capture the sounds of the Banner Gibsons. The early chapters of the book present the history of Orville Gibson and his founding of Gibson guitars in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  As a guitar player, I was intrigued by the history of the company and how it is intertwined with American history.  I had no idea that Orville Gibson was fond of gaudy pinstriped suits and built interesting instruments like harp guitars and lutes.  I have a new respect for the company's history having learned about how it scraped by during the depression, building both guitars and children's toys, and how it aided the WWII effort by taking a bunch of contracts to build military weapons. You will gain a much deeper understanding of Gibson's flattop guitar models and their histories.  You will read the stories of several specific guitars that were owned by famous musicians including Buddy Holly and Woodie Guthrie.  You may develop an itch to acquire a vintage guitar - the massive, resonant sounds of these guitars and the stories they carry are truly special. However, most importantly, you will hear the personal stories of some 15 or so Kalamazoo Gals.  It is touching to follow along as John Thomas clearly develops meaningful relationships with these women throughout the course of his research and interviews. Be sure to check out the album, The Light Still Burns, by Lauren Sheehan and produced by John Thomas, to hear some of the Banner Gibsons in action! Published in 2012 by American History Press. In Genesis 41 we have Joseph's elevation from prison to be the highest ruler in Egypt after Pharaoh. The butler had been restored to Pharaoh's service so that he might be there at the time of Pharaoh's double dream. Joseph, however, had to be patient for 3 more years before God would bring him out of the prison house – just as our Lord spent 3 days in the grave and was dependent on His Father to bring him back to life. One troublesome night Pharaoh dreamt two disturbing dreams. The number 7 was a most significant common factor in both dreams. The first was of 7 fat cows being eaten by 7 lean cows, who were no fatter after having eaten the fat cows. The second dream concerned 7 fat ears of wheat being devoured by the 7 withered ears; which ears grew no larger for their efforts. In the morning Pharaoh summoned all his magicians and wise men to try to interpret his disturbing thoughts. They had no idea and it was then the butler remembered Joseph and related the dreams and their accurate interpretation by the young Hebrew house slave. He told Pharaoh and Joseph was shaved and clad in robes befitting one who was to stand before the god-king that Pharaoh claimed to be. Pharaoh told Joseph that he had heard that Joseph was able to interpret dreams. Joseph rightly deflected the disused from himself to the Almighty; who alone would be able to calm the king's mind. Compare how Daniel virtually repeats Joseph's words when interpreting to Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2. The 7s were years. There were to be 7 years where the land would produce plentifully; followed by 7 years of severe famine. After having unfolded the meaning of the doubled dream from Yahweh Joseph gave advice to Pharaoh of a wise plan for storing the surplus. Pharaoh's response was to declare that it would be difficult to find a wiser advisor than Joseph. Joseph was declared to be the best person for the job and immediately made Prime Minister. Joseph was given splendid robes of office and a golden chain showing his authority over Pharaoh's people. Joseph's name was changed toZaphenath-Paneah (which meant “the Saviour of the World”). He was given lands in Goshen, where Pharaoh's priests dwelled, to go with his status. Joseph was also granted Asenath the daughter of Potiphera the priest of On to be his wife. Joseph was 30 years old when all this happened – just as our Lord Jesus Christ was 30 when his ministry began. Psalm 45 is written be Solomon to celebrate his marriage to the beautiful princess daughter of Pharaoh king of Egypt to himself. Solomon's marriage becomes typical of the Lord Jesus Christ's union with the faithful believers. The writer commences the song be declaring that he was writing about a theme which delighted him. The beautiful character of the Lord Jesus Christ was that sweet them (compare John Thomas' comments about2 Samuel 23 verses 1; which he says speaks of our Lord as the sweetest theme of Israel's Psalms). The word “indicting” in verse 1 (AV) signifies “bubbling over with enthusiasm”. In verse 2 the bride speaks of her groom being handsome. She tells of “grace pouring from his lips”(see Luke 4 verse 22). We are truly “saved by his life”; but, it can equally be said that, we are saved by his words (John6:63). #333 In this episode, Guy interviewed John Thomas, a Silicon Valley tech professional turned co-author of a spiritual book, 'Channeled Messages of Hope.' They delved into the process of receiving spiritual messages from ascended masters through voice channeling facilitated by Carolyn and her friend Sam Larkin. The conversation covered the origin of the book, the role of ascended masters, and the environmental messages received. John shared personal insights into spiritual growth, life reviews, and the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. The discussion also touches on their upcoming projects and the unique experience of transcribing these soul interviews into an audiobook format. About John: I am Carolyn Thomas' husband. I graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and my background is classic corporate technology. I went down the typical Silicon Valley tech company path, but then soon diverted to marketing, sales, and business development. I've tried my hand at big companies, and I've been involved with startups. I've had some successes, some failures, and lots of interesting experiences.  My involvement with the emerged when Carolyn was preparing for the Nikola Tesla interview. Without an engineering background, she was having difficulty formulating the more technical questions fitting for such a soul and asked for my help. I ended up leading the interview with Tesla, as well as the interviews with Albert Einstein and his first wife Mileva who reveals that she co-authored Einstein's paper on relatively along with four other papers filed in 1905. I also felt drawn to speak with Ronald Reagan and Samuel Clemens and would go on to participate in the remaining interviews with Carolyn. We felt that having the two of us interview a soul made for more interesting conversation as well as follow on questions.
