Welcome to Discograffiti's exploration of The Beach Boys' seventh studio album, this one packed with holiday cheer and orchestral sparkle. In this episode, special guest David Beard and I talk about Brian's album-length excuse to work with one of his heroes, Four Freshman arranger Dick Reynolds, whose expertise with the 41-piece orchestra that plays on half this LP foreshadows Brian's just around the corner on Pet Sounds. We also discuss whether this was a dry run for an A-Side/B-Side tonal discrepancy that wound up coming heavily into play on 1965's Today! LP, as well as what exactly happened with the group's botched late-1970s Christmas album sequel. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Joy to the Burg is an annual Christmas album that features holiday selections from local artists to raise money to benefit Central Pennsylvania residents experiencing homelessness. Proceeds from the album will go to street outreach through Christian Churches United. In 2019, Sheldon Jones was concerned about the unhoused people in Harrisburg. As an artist, he had this idea to make a Christmas album and sell it to help the homeless. “And it's just been it has taken off from there. In 2019, when Joy to the Bird first started, it helped open up a winter overnight shelter for women and non-binary individuals. And so, we're super grateful for the legacy of joining the burg and all the artists, “said Nick Mucci, Director of Development for Christian Churches United of the Tri County Area. Since Joy to the Burg’s inception in 2019, there have been over 80 artists that have been on the annual Christmas album. D-Bo!, songwriter and singer, is featured on the album this year. He has a song titled, “Christmas with My Baby.” “I'm just honored to be a part of this this great project and collaborate with so many great musicians in the area that me. I mean, I'm very familiar with most of them. I've seen a lot of them perform live. A lot of them have seen me. And so, you know, to be able to get all together on one thing and just, you know, for a good cause, it's just it's just a dream come true, you know? “said D-Bo!. CLICK here to purchase the album. Six-time Grammy winner, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, and Kennedy Center honoree Amy Grant joins us to chat about the pursuit of honesty in songwriting, the stories behind some of her songs, and her catalog of modern day Christmas classics. PART ONEPaul and Scott chat about the idea of a "definitive" version of a Christmas song, discuss their favorites, debate about Christmas songs they love and hate, and delve into Scott's elementary school crush on Amy Grant. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Amy GrantABOUT AMY GRANTPerhaps the most influential pioneer of the Contemporary Christian Music genre, Amy Grant released her first album while still in high school. Her fourth album, 1982's Age to Age, found unprecedented success with hit singles such as “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and “El Shaddai.” Age to Age topped the Christian album chart for 85 weeks, earned Amy her first Grammy award, and became the first Christian album to be certified Platinum by the RIAA. Her 1984 album Straight Ahead spawned hits with Amy's original compositions “Thy Word” and “Angels,” and became the first Christian album to land on the Billboard 200. By the mid-1980s, she further crossed over to mainstream success when “Find a Way,” which she wrote with Michael W. Smith, hit the Top 40 on Billboard's pop chart. The following year, Amy reached the top of the pop chart with “The Next Time I Fall,” a duet with Peter Cetera. Her 1991 album Heart in Motion sold 5 million copies and spawned four Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the self-penned hits “Baby Baby” and “Every Heartbeat.” That same year, she enjoyed another Top 10 pop hit as a songwriter with Michael W. Smith's “Place in This World.” Amy continued to find mainstream success in the mid-1990s with singles such as “House of Love,” a duet with her now-husband Vince Gill, as well as the songs “Lucky One” and “Takes a Little Time,” which she wrote with Keith Thomas and Wayne Kirkpatrick, respectively. Starting with 1983's A Christmas Album, holiday music has been an important part of Amy Grant's artistry. She has since released the albums Home for Christmas, which was certified three-times Platinum; A Christmas to Remember; Tennessee Christmas; and The Animals' Christmas, a collaborative album with Art Garfunkel featuring songs by Jimmy Webb that explore the nativity story from the perspective of the animals. Amy's original songs “Tennessee Christmas” and “Breath of Heaven” have become modern day holiday standards. Her Christmas concerts, often featuring husband Vince Gill and longtime collaborator Michael W. Smith, have become a holiday tradition. To date, Amy has released twenty studio albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Seventeen of her albums have reached #1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, more than any other artist in history. She has won 6 Grammy awards, 26 Dove awards, and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Amy has received honorary doctorates from two universities, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021. She was a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievement in 2022.

I missed Sean Heely, The Barra McNeils, Screaming Orphans, the McDades, and The Irish Rovers. Basically, many of the artists in this week's episode have Celtic Christmas concerts. 15:17 - Cedar Dobson "Good Christian Men Rejoice/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/Joy to the World” from A Whistle Wonderland: Christmas Melodies in a Celtic Style 18:13 - The McDades "Snow Snow” from A Winter Collection 23:02 - SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS TREES If you've been following me for a while, I am continually looking for more sustainable ways to live. Christmas is a great time to do just that. We Celts have long had an important relationship with the land and our environment. So I'm gonna offer a bunch of thoughts in the coming months. l read an article on “What's The Most Sustainable Christmas Tree?” You can find a link in the shownotes. One of the most-interesting things I read was about Artificial Trees. You might think they are the most-sustainable. But it turns out that they are typically made with some of the worst, most-toxic types of plastic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC). My family prefers real Christmas trees. But there's always a catch, isn't there. The challenge with a regular tree is finding one that is sustainably sourced. Meaning is it shipped from across the country? Or is it locally grown? Or even better, is it a tree you can replant in your yard when the holiday is over? I'll be honest. Replanting is more than we will do. However, did you know you can rent a Christmas tree? Yeah. That's what I said when I read that. It's not available in all areas. But it is possible to rent one. Then it will be planted afterward. If you're artsy, maybe you can build your own Christmas tree. You could use a plant around the house or build a tree from scrap lumber around the house. Do a search for Christmas tree alternatives and you'll find a ton of options. As for disposing of your tree, don't send those Artificial Trees to the landfill. Instead give it to someone, donate it, sell it or repurpose it. That's the best way to keep it out of the landfill. The same goes with regular trees. Sustainable Jungle writes: “Real trees that end up in landfills can be detrimental to the environment. This is because the tree decomposes and produces methane gas, which is 26 times more harmful than CO2 in terms of climate change potential.” So see if there are local collection services or repurpose the tree instead of sending it to trash. 26:12 - Irish Christmas in America "Air_March_Polka - The Snowy-Breasted Pearl, Freedom for Ireland” from A Long Way From Home 31:51 - Brobdingnagian Bards "Bog Down In Christmas” from Christmas In Brobdingnag 36:28 - Screaming Orphans "You Are All Mine (At Christmas Time)” from Happy Christmas Volume 2 39:30 - Mary-Kate Spring Lee "O Little Town of Bethlehem/Celia Connellen” from Carol of the Child 43:13 - THANK YOU FOR SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER! The holiday season is upon us, and we're ushering it in with joy and music! A cherished family tradition of baking Italian Christmas cookies sparked a creative journey that has blossomed into our latest project: a complete Italian American Christmas album. Joined by our guest the remarkable Jenna Esposito, whose talents have shaped this festive musical creation, we reminisce about our past triumphs like "Twas, the Feast of the Seven Fishes" and last year's delightful "We All Say Buon Natale" music video. Jenna's energy and passion shine through as we share our excitement for this year's musical celebration, which promises to captivate hearts and bring communities together. But this episode isn't just about music; it's a heartwarming blend of cultural anecdotes and laughter. Picture this: a spirited debate over tea preferences at an Irish diner, a grandmother's tale from Belfast bridging cultural divides, and the timeless humor we all share with the holiday. We take you behind the scenes of our recording sessions, filled with camaraderie, humorous chaos, and perhaps one too many pizzas. It's a celebration of tradition and giving back! With each note and harmony, our album supports a charitable cause, making it a true labor of love. Join us as we share heartening stories of collaboration with the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, delving into the magic of rare songs like the one about La Befana, and highlight the accordion's charming legacy in Italian music. Grammy and Tony Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. is ushering in the holiday season on The Christmas Tour, which he will be performing at the Hershey Theatre Dec 17. He will be performing holiday classics, and selections from his Christmas album Simply Christmas and The Christmas Album. For Odom Jr. Christmas is one of his favorite holidays and he's hoping to share that experience with the audience during his tour. “Christmas means family. Christmas means rest. You know, as Americans, we work. We work hard. And there's something about Christmas, too, Like a day or two after New Year. That's like the only time as Americans that we really allow ourselves to rest and push the pause button. People are not expecting you to answer your email right away, your text messages right away. So, it means pushing the pause button, you know, and focusing on family.” Leslie is a Pennsylvania native and is looking forward to performing in Hershey. “It's been a long time. You know, Pennsylvania holds such dear memories for me. I grew up in Philadelphia, of course, I went to college in Pittsburgh. My summer job was to intern on the House floor. You know, I was a page on the House floor in Harrisburg, so you know it. I am looking forward, as usual, to touching down in Pennsylvania and to having those that those rush of memories. I've got dear friends coming to the show in Hershey, and I want those memories around me at the holiday time. You know, it's really special.” CLICK HERE to see more about Leslie Odom Jr.'s upcoming tour.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
