It's time again for a visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom each week with her reviews of Maryland's regional stage. Today, she tells us about the new production of The Fantasticksby Baltimore's Vagabond Players. This perpetually popular musical romantic comedy, with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, premiered off-Broadway in 1960, and is renowned as the world's longest running musical. Its original off-Broadway production ran for 42 years (until 2002), logging 17,162 performances. It has long been a staple of regional, community and school productions, with some 250 new stagings each year. The Fantasticks is directed at Vagabond Players by Jimi Kinstle, with a cast featuring Quentin Patrick as The Boy (Matt), Jeff Burch as The Girl's Father (Bellomy), B. Thomas Rinaldi as The Man Who Dies (Mortimer), Kathryn Falcone as The Narrator (El Gallo), Ana Lane as The Girl (Luisa), Ari Juno as The Mute, Jim Hart as The Boy's Father (Hucklebee) and John Sadowsky as The Old Actor (Henry). It's Thursday, and theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom for another of her weekly reviews of the Maryland stage. Today, she tells us about the new production of Constellations by Baltimore's Vagabond Players. First produced on Broadway in 2014, Constellations is a mind-bending multi-dimensional romance by British playwright Nick Payne. Starring Ryan Gunning and Christian Smith, the play is directed at the Vagabond Theater by Michael Byrne Zemarel. Constellations is provisionally scheduled to continue at Vagabond Theater until March 22, but in light of possible theater closings due to the COVID-19 outbreak, those interested in the production should check the Vagabond Players website for updates.

It's Thursday and time for our theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, to join us for another of her weekly reviews of the regional stage. Today, she describes the new production of playwright Noel Coward's classic comedy, Blithe Spirit: An Improbable Farce in Three Acts, on stage at Baltimore's Vagabond Players. First produced in London's West End Theatre in 1941, Blithe Spirit tells the story of mystery writer and socialite Charles Condomine, whose seemingly untroubled life with his second wife is upended when he engages a medium to seek out spirits as material for his next book. He winds up instead confronting the ghost of his first wife, and mayhem ensues.Directed at Vagabond by Steve Goldklang, Blithe Spirit stars Alyssa Wellman Houde as Edith, Barbara Madison Hauck as Ruth, Eric. C. Stein as Charles, Ducan Hood as Dr. Bradman, Dianne Hood as Mrs. Bradman, Maribeth Vogel as Madam Arcati, and Kerry Brady as Elvira.Blithe Spirit continues at Vagabond Theatre through Sunday May 12.

Today, Midday's intrepid theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck reviews the courtroom drama Inherit the Wind, now on stage at Vagabond Players.Based on the 1925 Scopes ----Monkey Trial,---- Inherit the Wind explores themes of science, religion, and intellectual freedom, as they swirled together in a historic courtroom debate over whether Charles Darwin's theory of evolution should be taught in public schools. Written in 1955, playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee used the play to comment on the contemporaneous and controversial McCarthy hearings, which sought to purge suspected communists from positions in the US government, industry and the arts.Inherit the Wind, directed by Sherrionne Brown, continues at Vagabond Players through Sunday, February 4, with show times on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here or at the door.

Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom for her weekly review of one of the region's thespian offerings. Today, she spotlights Fallout , the play by Laura King that's being staged by Baltimore's Vagabond Players as part of the Baltimore Playwrights Festival . It's directed by Audra Mains Mullen , and stars Gareth Kelly as David and Ryan Gunning as Anna, two strangers with issues, who seek refuge from an unknown menace in a fallout shelter, a relic of the nuclear holocaust paranoia that raged during the Cold War. In the tight confines of the shelter, Anna and David wrestle with their inner demons, even as they deal with their terror of what lurks outside. The Vagabond Players ' production of Fallout -- one of just two plays to be fully-staged in this year's Baltimore Playwrights Festival -- runs through Sunday, July 30 .
