Facing Uncertainty as a Practice: Freedom, Presence and the Patterns We Inherit

Learning through Experience

In a time marked by anxiety, division and disconnection, the path forward lies not in fixing the past but in expanding our freedom to imagine what's next. In this episode of Learning Through Experience, Dr. Heidi Brooks is joined by Suzi Tucker, a writer, teacher and pioneer of Family Constellations work. Together, they explore how our personal and ancestral stories shape the patterns we repeat—and how stepping into those patterns with curiosity can help us reorient toward hope. With warmth, wisdom and respect for the unknown, Suzi shares how facing uncertainty isn't about certainty at all—it's about accompaniment. It's about standing on the shoulders of those who came before us and choosing, even in fear, to take one generative step toward something more. Through stories of lineage, loss, and liberation, Heidi and Suzi offer listeners an invitation to slow down, pay attention and let learning emerge. “When I plant a seed, that's really all I have to do. I don't know what's going to come. That one generative step is enough.” —Suzi Tucker Learning Through Experience is produced through the Yale School of Management. Show Notes & Key Moments 03:00 – A Brother Remembered, a Path Revealed Suzi recalls how the absence of her institutionalized brother shaped her and how an encounter with Bert Hellinger—founder of Family Constellations—marked a turning point. “I decided I had a freedom my mother didn't have, and I used it. I went to meet my brother—not for him to know me, but for me to know him.” 10:16 – The Work of Freedom vs. HealingSuzi explains that her work isn't about fixing the past—it's about freeing people to move forward. “Healing is personal and beautiful, but not necessarily connected to something in the future. Freedom is.” 13:36 – Patterns, Habit and the Energy of StucknessHeidi and Suzi discuss how we get trapped in cycles inherited from our family systems—and how awareness opens space for choice. “Those places where I've done the same thing over and over again—and then I defend it, and get angry at the defense—that's when spirit gets siphoned off.” 18:00 – Group Work, Lineage and AccompanimentSuzi reflects on what emerges in her constellation workshops—and why showing up in community can be a pathway to hope. “When I look at a group of 40, I see 4 million. I'm working not just with people, but with the lineages sitting beside them.” 24:45 – Facing Uncertainty with Ancestral SupportSuzi names the emotional reality of living in uncertain times and how drawing from lineage can be a grounding force. “I call it the lethargy of despair. But then I feel my predecessors stepping in and saying, we've seen this before.” 27:29 – Writing as a Practice of PossibilityFor Suzi, writing becomes a tool to move beyond fear and uncertainty. “I'm writing my path beyond the threshold of fear.” 43:23 – Constellations and a Shift in PerspectiveConstellations offer a way to step outside the chaos and view one's story with new eyes. Heidi and Suzi discuss why representing others in a group can be transformative. “It's not about understanding the system, but knowing there is a system—and it looks different depending on where you stand.” 48:22 – Generative Endings and Ongoing UnfoldingSuzi explains that constellations don't end with solutions, but with new images that change the structure of how people move through life. “I picture my parents behind me, my brother beside me, and I walk forward. And I imagine them saying, We're so glad they didn't stay trapped in our fear.” 53:55 – Something to Sit WithHeidi closes by highlighting the invitation at the heart of this episode: not to solve uncertainty, but to meet it. “Fear is familiar. Possibility is harder to trust—but it's there. And we can take one generative step toward it.” Resources Suzi Tucker's website: Explore Suzi Tucker's website to learn about her upcoming retreats, workshops, and sign up for her newsletter. ‘Til Soon: Paradigm-shifting life prompts through the unique lens of Systemic Constellations, by Suzi Tucker. Acknowledging What Is: Conversations With Bert Hellinger: In this thought-provoking series of dialogues, Bert Hellinger—the originator of the Family Constellation method—offers profound insights into the unseen dynamics that shape family systems. Through real-life examples and practical reflections, he explores how acknowledging hidden entanglements can unlock the path to personal and generational healing. Holding Love: A Teaching Seminar on Love's Hidden Symmetry: Drawn from a live seminar in San Francisco in 1999, this comprehensive three-part resource offers an in-depth look at applying Family Constellations in therapeutic settings. Hellinger guides viewers through the subtle patterns influencing love and relationships, illustrating how the method can reveal underlying forces at play in couples and family work.

The sermon on the mount is probably one of the best known and most recognisable teachings of Jesus. It has captured the hearts and imagination of believers over many centuries. It has inspired writings and has shaped western culture. Its influence and significance can not be over stated. As “door keeper” to this great body of teaching we find, what is commonly know as “The Beatitudes”. Sinclair Furgeson says that “The sermon on the mount does not begin with what we are to do as Christians. In a sense it doesn't even begin with telling us what we are to be as Christians. It begins by telling us the blessedness of what we are as Christians.” In the Christian life being is the foundation for doing. Not the other way around. The beatitudes therefore sets the tone, orientates the heart and primes the mind for the profound truths to follow. The Beatitudes have the following unique features:• They reflect the upside down nature of the values of the kingdom of Heaven• The are completely counter cultural. The beatitudes commend values and conditions that the world despises. Even during the time of Jesus.• They assume hostility and persecution. Because of its contrary values they bring us into a world that is hostile. • They describe the blessed, happy, favoured and fortunate condition that all who follow Jesus find themselves in.• They therefore do not refer to 8 different kinds of people but rather reflect on the state of all believers.

Can I Inherit Immortality?

Christian Questions Bible Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 29:21

What does it mean to be “immortal? In Greek mythology, Zeus, Athena and Apollo were among their immortal gods, those who lived forever and had powerful influence over the mortal world. When someone achieves extraordinary levels of greatness in their field, they are often spoken of as being immortal. In American baseball, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays are “immortalized” by the way they played the game. These examples show us that immortality can be applied to mean someone or something as never dying, be it in a physical or an intellectual sense. So, how does the Bible define immortality? As we explore this question, we will see a clear and focused reasoning emerge that elevates what immortality is and who will have it. Immortality: Inherent or a gift? Exploring the biblical concept of immortality requires focusing on its New Testament definition and implications. The Bible defines immortality as the inability to die or decay. This meaning is derived from two Greek words: athanasia (deathlessness) and aphthartos (incorruptibility). The Apostle Paul's writings, especially 1 Corinthians 15, describe how humanity must transform from mortal (liable to die) and corruptible (subject to decay) to immortal and incorruptible in order to inherit the heavenly kingdom of God. These findings clearly indicate that immortality is not an inherent human trait. Rather, it is a rare gift from God. It is given only to faithful followers of Christ who demonstrate self-sacrifice, discipline and obedience to God's truth. Therefore, achieving immortality requires a life dedicated to spiritual growth and living by God's will. So, what about everyone else who has ever lived? These masses of people are offered eternal life—a perpetual existence reliant on God's sustenance. Eternal life allows for the possibility of death if one strays, whereas immortality ensures complete deathlessness. The resurrection and Day of Judgment play crucial roles in offering eternal life to humanity. God's ultimate plan ensures eternal harmony between spiritual and earthly creations, with immortality reserved for a select few who serve as reconcilers. Understanding these levels of existence helps us appreciate God's power, love, justice and wisdom in a deeper way.

A lawyer was intending to challenge Jesus publicly to test Him with a bit of a trick question: "What Shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Keeping in mind that the Mosaic law was still being applied to Jewish people who were under it before the cross, Jesus referred him to that law for the answer to his question. In short, Jesus said in order to find the life he was seeking, all he would need is to do what the law says. That was not the good news of the gospel. It sounds simple but Jesus had a way of showing His audience how difficult it is to accomplish such a monumental task. In a new and better covenant, the way to life isn't found in what one does. Faith is not made alive by works ... and faith is not made perfect by works. Justification, salvation, forgiveness, and righteousness are gifted by God—not by a written word of the letter—but through the living Word ... Jesus Christ. --Available on Amazon - "Clash of The Covenants: Escaping Religious Bondage Through the Grace Guarantee" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713ZSKY7

The great wealth transfer, totaling $124 trillion, will occur by 2048, shifting wealth from Baby Boomers to their heirs. A report from the Bank of America Institute estimates nearly $100 trillion of this transfer will benefit women, with approximately $47 trillion going to younger women through inheritance and $54 trillion to surviving spouses, mostly women. By 2030, women in the U.S. are expected to manage about two-thirds of private wealth. The demographic of women aged 50 to 70 is projected to grow significantly by 2050, leading to increased wealth and independence for this group. This wealth transition will likely elevate demand for women's products and services, as women have outspent men on discretionary and essential items in the past year. Women also comprise a majority of solo travelers, prompting adaptations in travel offerings, such as the introduction of an all-female cruise route by Uniworld for August 2025.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Reflection The meaning is clear that we need, if we wish to enter the kingdom of God, to care for one another. But the depth of this passage is really much more than that. It is saying that the things we do to each other, we do to God. When you think about that, it radically changes our relationship with each other because we realize how could we possibly worship God when we're angry at, or want to destroy someone? Everything is interconnected. When we love each other, we're loving God. When we hate each other, we are hating God. It's a terrifying thought in one sense, but it's also such a strong motive, such a clear image of how it is that God wants us to love him. He doesn't need our love. He needs us to love one another. Closing Prayer Father, open us to this mystery of interconnectedness. Everything is one. What we do to our brothers and sisters, we do it ourselves. What we do to our brothers and sisters, we also do to God. It's all one. It's all connected. Open our eyes to see and feel this great mystery. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” Matthew 25:31–32What an image to ponder! Try to imagine this scene. At one definitive moment in the future, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, now also in human form as the “Son of Man,” will return to earth in glory surrounded by all the angels of Heaven and will sit upon His new and glorious throne. In front of that throne, every person of every nation ever to exist will be gathered together, and each person will be judged according to their deeds. Those who served our Lord and treated the least of His brothers and sisters with mercy and compassion will hear Jesus say, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Those who did not serve Christ and did not treat the least ones with mercy will be sent off to eternal punishment as Jesus says to them, “Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels.” On that day, only one thing will matter, because eternity will be determined with permanence. All that will matter is whether you will be placed on our Lord's right so as to inherit eternal life, or on His left and sent into the eternal fires.Sometimes, as we journey through life, we can lose sight of this glorious day. When we think of God and Heaven, it is easy to fall into the presumption that Heaven is guaranteed to us. God is kind and merciful, and He loves us. Therefore, we presume that Heaven is for certain and only the most horrible people will end in hell. But this is not how Jesus depicts the Day of Judgment.Jesus explains that at the time of judgment, the righteous will be astonished by the fact that caring for those who are hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, ill, or imprisoned was the same as showing love for God. Likewise, those who neglected the same people will be astonished that they failed to love God by failing to love the least of Jesus' brothers and sisters. Do not take this teaching lightly. Jesus does not mince His words. He is abundantly clear and definitive. In your life, who are these “least ones” of which Jesus is speaking? The hungry and thirsty are not only those with physical needs but also those who have spiritual longings that need to be satisfied. They are those lost or confused in life who need to be given direction. The stranger might be anyone who is lonely and easily ignored. The naked might be those who cannot manage to care for their needs. The ill could be those who are elderly or suffering in various ways. And the imprisoned could include those bound by sin who need help to be set free. Do not fail to seek out our Lord as He is present in those all around you. Reflect, today, upon those in your life who seem most lost and most in need of your compassion. Those to whom we do not feel like reaching out are those who most often need our compassion and mercy. The “least ones” are often those we judge, condemn or ignore. Call to mind the person who seems least deserving of your love and know that Jesus is living within them, waiting for you to love Him by loving them. Most merciful Lord, Your compassion is great and Your judgment is real. Help me to always keep my mind upon that final and glorious day on which You will return in all Your splendor and glory to judge the living and the dead. May I truly heed Your words and prepare for that day by loving You in all people, especially in those most in need. JVN sits down with journalist and author James Longman to explore one of the most fascinating questions in mental health: can you inherit trauma? Drawing from his deeply personal journey and his new book The Inherited Mind, James unpacks the science behind genetic predisposition, epigenetics, and the interplay between nature and nurture. Together, they explore how trauma shapes our brains, why mental illness remains so stigmatized, and whether healing can be passed down just as much as hardship. James shares his own family's history, the groundbreaking research that's reshaping our understanding of mental illness, and the hopeful innovations that might change how we address treatment in the future. James Longman has been a foreign correspondent for ABC news since 2017. Based in London, his work takes him all over the world -- to date, more than 45 countries and counting. He has covered some of the most important international events of our time. He was in Moscow when Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and spent a month reporting from the Russian capital with the situation deteriorating by the day. He then spent more than 12 weeks in Ukraine and was one of the first reporters to see firsthand the horrors in Bucha. From the fight against the Islamic State group on the Syrian front line, confronting Chechen authorities about abuses against LGBTQ+ people, terror attacks across Europe and further abroad to tagging humpback whales in the Antarctic, Longman has one of the most varied briefs in American network news. Therapists Ashley Wilfore and Sarah Louer know what it's like to have dieting and body shame passed down to you like a family heirloom. We discuss what it means to experience intergenerational trauma, how disordered eating and body hatred get inherited and perpetuated through family values and behaviors, and what it's like to grow up surrounded by diet culture in your home. Ashley and Sarah and speak with honesty, compassion, and humor about their experiences letting go of the pursuit of thinness, and trying to raise their own children while being cycle-breakers. Tune in to hear more about: What's on their plates (hint: foods to eat when you're sick, and an ode to eggplant...) A clinical and personal definition of “intergenerational trauma” Being impacted by generational passing down of dieting and body shame How the idea that starving yourself is power has been believed by their family members who were otherwise independent-minded and strong  Specific moments and vivid memories from childhood that form beliefs today Overhearing the women they looked up to talking about their own bodies The moments they realized they couldn't keep dieting and over-exercising  The intentional decisions they made as mothers How they handle their parents' anti-fat bias today SO much more!! A final gentle note before you listen: If you are reading this right now as a mom, and you feel like this has been both something you both experienced from your mother as well as something you've been afraid of passing on to your children…know this: our conversation is for you, not about you. It is so that we can hold space for one another and figure out how to not pass this on from generation to generation.   Enjoying this podcast?
