Almost no one in the last several decades has done more to change the American approach to trade than Robert Lighthizer. Lighthizer was the U.S. trade representative in President Donald Trump's first term. In that role, he set out to reverse Washington's long-standing commitment to a global trading system. It was a crusade—using tariffs, among other tools—that targeted China above all but also any other country that, as he saw it, benefited from that system at the expense of the United States. Lighthizer recently laid out his vision for a new trade order in Foreign Affairs. With Trump levying tariffs and wielding American economic power against both allies and adversaries, Lighthizer argues that the free trade system should be thrown out, replaced with one that is more balanced, sovereign, and transparent. His through-line: asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and no first responder is 10 feet tall and bulletproof. Jag hade föreläst sex timmar i sträck och cyklade därefter hemåt; konstant blödande. Halvvägs över Göta älvbron var jag tvungen att stanna för att spy. Rakt ut i vattnet. Hon hade faktiskt tänkt på hur det skulle gå för hennes man, som var två meter och fyra centimeter lång, om han behövde opereras. Mannen i sjukhussängen bredvid min berättar att han är en och nittiosju, om han inte krympt sedan han fick ett träd i huvudet. ”Ett träd i huvudet” frågar sköterskan. ”Ja, det är förmodligen därför jag är här; trä mot trä”.Mannen som nu ligger på ett operationsbord hinner inte säga så mycket mer innan han rullas iväg. Men det räcker. Han är inte längre en för lång kropp i lånade kläder som förflyttats från en sjukhussäng till ett operationsbord han inte riktigt får plats på. Han är en livs levande människa, som med humorn som vapen lyckas behålla sin personliga identitet intakt, i mötet med sjukhuspersonalen.Jag försätts själv i en liknande situation när en av de två kirurgerna som ska operera mig kommer för att presentera sig. Han är dansk och ursäktar sig för sin dåliga svenska som hans kollegor ofta misstar för lättförståelig danska. Jag säger att han inte behöver ursäkta sig. Eftersom jag arbetat i Danmark ett par år förstår jag utan minsta problem hans svenska. Jag vet att han försöker skämta med mig för att lätta upp stämningen. Han försöker också få mig att känna mig trygg när han säger att jag är den perfekta patienten för den titthålsoperation som ska utföras; smal, frisk och har fött barn. Dessutom informerar han mig om att han gjort den här typen av operation ungefär trehundra gånger tidigare.Det hjälper lite. Ändå undrar jag hur de ska få ut livmodern. En av sköterskorna hade sagt att den tas ut genom titthållen, men det kunde väl knappast stämma? Nej, det gjorde det inte. ”Du vet, samma väg som ett barn kommer ut, kan man slita loss hela underlivet” konstaterar den danske kirurgen med viss humor och värme. Sedan frågar han om jag vill att han ska ta äggledarna också när han ändå rör sig i de regionerna. Det finns nämligen ett par vetenskapliga studier som visar att det radikalt minskar risken för cancer i äggstockarna senare i livet. Visserligen finns det också ett par vetenskapliga studier som visar att man kan hamna i klimakteriet ett par månader i förväg om man gör så. ”Det är helt upp till dig. Du bestämmer” säger den danske kirurgen som jag först nu uppfattar namnet på.Han heter Jacob. Jacob med c. Naturligtvis har han redan sagt sitt namn, men nu ser jag det också på namnbrickan som är fastnålad vid hans bröstficka. Jag tittar upp och svarar att valet mellan cancer och klimakteriet inte känns särskilt svårt. Virginia Wolf har i och för sig beskrivit det som att sitta ”blottad på en hög klippavsats i full dagsljus. Mycket ensam. Mycket onyttigt…” Jacob avbryter mig och säger med allvar i rösten: ”Om du var min fru hade jag opererat bort äggledarna utan att fråga dig. Eller om du var en nära släkting” lägger han snabbt till.Man kan då inte reduceras till en livmoder som gjort sitt. Inte heller till yttre attribut som förknippas med kvinnlighet.Det intressanta är att vårt samtal får mig att släppa obehaget som avpersonifieringen jag genomgått medfört. Jag upplever mig inte längre som en vit och bakteriefri kropp att sätta kniven i. Jag känner tillit till att Jacobs attityd inte enbart är slentrianmässig yrkesskicklighet. Jag upplever det inte heller som att jag pådyvlas hans åsikter. Istället lyckas vårt samtal få mig att träda fram på ett delvis nytt sätt. I Jacobs ansikte återspeglas jag bortom rekvisita och roller, men ändå som en person med såväl historia som framtid. Jacob är inte enbart en tillräknelig gynekolog med kunskap om den senaste forskningen på området, utan inkluderar både mitt och sitt eget liv i den situation vi befinner oss i.Istället för att ingå i en ”Jag-Det relation” upprättas en ”Jag-Du relation”. Filosofen Martin Buber menar att Jag-Du är ett grundord som innebär att man inte behandlar den andre som ett ting bland andra ting eller som något som består av ting. Man kan då inte reduceras till en livmoder som gjort sitt. Inte heller till yttre attribut som förknippas med kvinnlighet.Det är detta förhållningssätt som får mig att våga det ödeshopp som krävs för att under narkos tillfälligt förlora mig och sedan vakna upp starkare och friare än förut. I den bästa av världar kommer jag vara en kvinna som inte blöder och som oavsett det oönskade tomrummet inuti kan ta emot den nåd som genuin mellanmänsklighet eller möte mellan Du och Jag innebär.Vad lär man i ett sådant möte känna av varandra? Inget alls, eftersom man inte kan lära känna den andre. Vad vet man då om varandra? Bara allt, eftersom man inte längre vet något enskilt. Med detta menas att ingen förkunskap och ingen fantasi krävs när man möter den andre som ett Du istället för ett Det. Man upptäcker varandra på ett sätt som kastar en ur isolering; själva minnet omvandlas så att en okänd framtid blir möjlig att gå till mötes. Den andre framstår i sin helhet. He retired from teaching in the Religious Education Department at BYU–Idaho in January 2024. Sister Chambers' previous callings include service as a mission president's companion, ward Young Women president, Primary president, Relief Society presidency counselor, and a temple worker.
