Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with two-time Tony winner Judith Ivey. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary career, including singing A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC for Stephen Sondheim, how Carol Woods gave her dinner eight times a week during FOLLIES, how her performance in STEAMING led to three feature film roles, finding the comedy in THE HEIRESS, meeting Neil Simon at the Tony Awards, performing BLITHE SPIRIT after Geraldine Page passed away, a memorable night out with Mike Nichols while working on HURLYBURLY, being directed by Zoe Caldwell in PARK YOUR CAR IN HARVARD YARD, acting opposite Jason Robards, acting with the audience in THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS, listening to Margaret Thatcher while performing in THE AUDIENCE, being directed by Edward Albee in THE AMERICAN DREAM, making the audience gasp during VOICES IN THE DARK, the difficulty of performing in GREATER CLEMENTS, developing a one-woman musical with George Furth, how Peter Hall chose her for BEDROOM FARCE, laughing with Eileen Heckart during THE FIVE MRS. BUCHANANS, bringing VANITIES off-Broadway, finding her own take on the leading role in PIAF, and so much more. Don't miss this honest conversation with one of Broadway's greatest stars.
Sarah (Madame Arcati), Daniel (Charles) and Katie (Elvira) are interviewed by Cait about the lastest production by Putney Theatre Company, Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, directed by Tom Sainsbury.Noël Coward's comedy classic tells the story of suave novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife, Ruth. They invite local medium, Madam Arcati, to conduct a séance to inspire him for his next novel. The evening doesn't go as planned, and the sceptical Charles is reunited with the ghost of his first wife, Elvira. Only he can see Elvira and she doesn't take kindly to Ruth having usurped her. Attempts by Madame Arcati fail to return her to the “other world”, and Elvira's spirit transforms the lives of Charles and Ruth forever. Playwright Alice Scovell (The Rewards of Being Frank) discusses her new comedy Kindred Spirits, a sequel to Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit now having its world premiere at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (and featuring our own Austin Tichenor as Charles Condomine, whose late wives Elvira and Ruth return once again to stir up trouble). Scovell talks about how she gave Oscar Wilde's characters from The Importance of Being Earnest the seven-year-itch; how she's played around in the STU – the Shakespeare Theatrical Universe – through her sequel to Love's Labor's Lost; the challenges and rewards of negotiating with an author's estate; and how a life of theatergoing has led to a new life of theatre making. Ronald Neames says that after This Happy Breed he and the rest of Cineguild were tired of making war-time films, and were pretty sure audiences were tired of propaganda. But they weren't tired of working with Noel Coward, despite the fact that with each movie in Criterion's David Lean Directs Noel Coward boxset we get new stories of Coward disagreeing with their choices in filming his work. Blithe Spirit is the final film we'll be covering in the boxset - Brief Encounter, the Lean and Coward masterpiece, is in here too, but we talked about it 11 years ago. A delightful romp about murdering your loved ones, accidentally murdering your loved ones' loved ones, hating your dead wives, and not being too fond of your living wives, Coward told Lean to "just shoot the play" and thankfully Lean didn't totally listen. The film gets worse the more faithful it is to the original, but thankfully Lean and company still have some flourishes to add (that Coward reportedly hated). The most bewildering part of Blithe Spirit is that they still came back together to make another movie afterward.

On this week's episode of The Infinite Library, we're treading the old boards and discussing our first play: Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit". We talk about sex, death, and how movies aren't sending their best. We hope you enjoy our discussion as always.
Jayne Atkinson believes she has this kind of magic superpower of getting what she wants if she puts her attention to it, and she's got a long list of credits to prove just that. She looks back on her childhood and having an English sensibility (and sense of humor) even though she grew up in America. She credits her high school drama teacher as the one who gave her the foundation of her work, and thinks fellow classmate Michael Greif is her “theatre angel”. Jayne talks about her latest play, "Still," which she stars in alongside her old friend Tim Daly. She shares the story of what made her say yes to the play after receiving the script from Will Rucker, and the show's themes of love, connection, and the importance of listening to each other. Jayne gets real as she reflects on the impact of technology on human connection, why she thinks “the SAG strike didn't hit some of the issues it needed to hit”, and the significance of live theater, especially today. With a successful acting career and so many credits under her name, she shares her personal motivations, advising aspirants to prioritize self-care and enjoyment in auditions. Jayne Atkinson is a British American actress who's graced everything from Broadway's grand stages to popular television shows. You might recognize her from her Emmy-nominated role as Karen Hayes on “24” or her powerful performances in “House of Cards” and “Criminal Minds”. Her accolades extend far beyond the screen, including Tony Award nominations for her captivating theater work in the 2000 production of “The Rainmaker” and the 2003 production of “Enchanted April”. Her other TV and film credits include “Parenthood”, “A Year in the Life”, “Gossip Girl”, “Madam Secretary”, and “Death and Other Details”. Jayne is also a three-time Drama Desk Award nominee. She was last seen on stage starring alongside Angela Lansbury in “Blithe Spirit”, and can now be seen in the off-Broadway production of “Still” at the DR2 Theater. Barry Creyton began his career at the age of 17 in theatre and in radio in Australia and by age 20, was playing leads on stage, and in national radio productions. He also hosted his own weekly radio program devoted to theatre news and interviews. At 21, he made his Australian television debut as Lorenzo in a national television production of The Merchant of Venice. For three seasons, he starred in the TV series The Mavis Bramston Show. This ground breaking show, the highest rated in the history of Australian television, dealt with topical and political satire.Creyton relocated to England for twelve years playing comedy and dramatic roles in London's West End - including Don's Party (Royal Court), Roger's Last Stand (Duke of York's), Ten Years Hard (Mayfair), Urban Guerilla (Soho Poly), a revival of the musical Salad Days, and Liz, a musical based on Aristophanes' Lysistrata as well as several revues and the National Tour of Abelard and Heloise. On his return to Australia, Creyton starred in many theatre productions - Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce, Season's Greetings and Absurd Person Singular, Frayn's Noises Off, and in Pack Of Lies, Side By Side By Sondheim, The Owl And The Pussycat, Suddenly At Home, The Philanthropist, and played twins in the comedy-thriller Corpse. He guest starred on many popular TV episodics. These roles were generally amorous cads or big-business villains - characters at odds with the comedies he played on the stage. They included The Restless Years, The Young Doctors, Skyways, Cop Shop, The Sullivans, I Married a Bachelor, Cuckoo in the Nest, as well as guest star roles in TV movies, Image of Death, All at Sea, the Michael Powell feature, They're a Weird Mob and the BBC's Robert Louis Stevenson in Australia. He turned to directing, with the musical Nunsense which broke box office records all over Australia, and employed two companies playing simultaneously. A motorcycle accident during the run of Corpse resulted in a badly broken leg. The long recuperation period enabled him to write a stage comedy, Double Act. Since 1990, Creyton has worked almost exclusively in the United States, principally as writer and director. He relocated from New York to Los Angeles when commissioned to write a movie of the week for Hearst Television, while his off Broadway revue Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know ran for two and a half years in New York. His critically acclaimed adaptation of Noël Coward's Peace in Our Time for the Antaeus Theatre Company in L.A. received the Ovation Award and the L.A. Weekly Annual Theatre Award; the L. A. Times voted the production among the best world theatre of the year.He has appeared on stage at the Antaeus Theatre in Balzac's Cousin Bette, Shaw's The Doctors Dilemma and Moliere's School For Wives and as Apollo in The Curse of Oedipus.Creyton returns to Australia periodically for theatre engagements, starring in Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, directing and starring in his own plays, Later Than Spring and Valentine's Day (since produced in several languages and, along with his Double Act, in constant repertoire in Europe), and in 2007 he returned to Sydney's Ensemble Theatre to star in Peter Quilter's play Glorious, and again in 2010 in Quilter's Duets, in which he played four diverse characters. His young adult novels, The Dogs of Pompeii and Nero Goes to Rome, co-authored with American writer Vaughan Edwards, are published by Random House, and his novel Murder is Fatal, an affectionate parody of noir movies, was published in 2017.His novel The View from Olympus Mons, was published in 2022 by NineStar Press. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. This is the seventh and final episode in my series of conversations with author OLIVER SODEN regarding his recent book: MASQUERADE: THE LIVES OF NOEL COWARD This week we explore the final chapters of both Coward's life and this brilliant biography. Remarkably, during the final decade of his life Coward wrote the book, music & lyrics for two Broadway musicals — SAIL AWAY (starring Elaine Stritch) and THE GIRL WHO CAME TO SUPPER (Starring Jose Ferer & Florence Henderson), and directed HIGH SPIRITS (with book, music & lyrics by Hugh Martin & Timothy Gray and starring Tammy Grimes & Beatrice Lillie) which was based on Coward's play Blithe Spirit. At the same time he enjoyed an extraordinary revival of his status as a playwright of including landmark productions of PRIVATE LIVES and HAY FEVER as the first play by a living author to be presented at the National Theatre, and culminating in a remarkable trio of new plays under the title of SUITE IN THREE KEYS that he wrote and starred in. And I feel certain that you will find Soden's account of Coward's final public appearance, with Marlene Dietrich on his arm, at a special performance of the hit off-Broadway revue Oh, Coward! to be very moving. “Born In A Trunk” She may have been born in the Bay Area, but Amy Irving might as well have been born in a theatre. Her father was the film and stage director Julius Irving and her mother was the actress Priscilla Pointer. And what happens when you have theatre parents? Well, you're in the theatre. A lot. And then you're on the stage. A lot. And then it's in your blood and there's no turning back. Amy Irving got her start on the stage at 9 months old and from there she never stopped. She studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, landed in L.A. and almost immediately started landing role after role in movies and television. What movies and what television, you might be asking? Well, in the movies category she was in Carrie, Delancey Street, The Competition, Honeysuckle Rose and Yentil. She was also the singing voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? As for television, she was on Police Woman, Happy Days and Once An Eagle with Sam Elliott and Glenn Ford. And not only was she working regularly in those mediums, she was still a busy theatre actor, appearing in Amadeus, Romeo and Juliet, Blithe Spirit and The Glass Menagerie. Along the way she picked up an Oscar nomination, a few Golden Globe nominations and she won a Screen Actors Guild Award. Now this is all just a partial list, but the fact of the matter is, from the big screen to the small screen to the stage, Amy Irving has always been a very busy working actor. Which brings us to Born In A Trunk, which is Irving debut album. Produced by Goolis, Born In A Trunk is a ten-track collection of songs that are culled from her life and career. She covers numbers by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Death Cab For Cutie. And The result? Well, not only a compelling and riveting listen, but an album whose song cycle combines to tell the story of a life on the stage and a career in the arts. Why write a memoir when you can sing one, right? And, boy can Amy Irving sing. Her precision, her timbre, her effortless phrasing and her sheer musical poise make Born In A Trunk one of 2023's great surprises. Rerun. Agatha Christie's ‘The Mousetrap', the world's longest-running play, opened at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham on 6th October, 1952, with a cast including Richard Attenborough. The producer, Peter Saunders, predicted the production would run for 14 months. More than 28,000 performances later, the show has become an iconic attraction in London's West End, with a set that still includes the original mantelpiece clock present on stage on opening night nearly 70 years ago. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly unpick the unconventional choices Christie made with the copyright of the play; recount Noel Coward's begrudging correspondence with her when it overtook Blithe Spirit as the West End's longest-running play; and uncover the tragic backstory that inspired its plot… WITHOUT REVEALING THE TWIST!
