But why is "truthfully" and "fully" so hard for us? Why is it so difficult to be in the moment with our art and in our lives? At some point, likely in your youth, you had to split to survive, to deny certain parts of "self," parts needed to get to an intense place of playing the grittiest of supervillains on your favorite TV show, to playing the most important role of your career-your truest self. With Meisner acting technique and a good coach, you can learn how to incorporate all parts of you in every moment...so you can create truthfully and fully. This week we're talking about adaptation again, in the context of how to bring a first-person, ruminating narrative about memory and loss into the detached and visual realm of film. Alistair Owen, who has published various books on screenwriting, calls in from England to talk about this interesting adaptation of Julian Barnes' novel 'The Sense of an Ending' which was directed by Ritesh Batra and written by Nick Payne. We use examples from the film to discuss the whether there is such as thing a 'unadaptable', how to show internal change in a character's actions, and how film as a narrative engine perhaps demands more in the way of story and character development than literary fiction.  If you enjoy this episode, you can purchase and enjoy Alistair's book 'The Art of Screen Adaptation' from his website. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? A career retrospective with Jake Gyllenhaal on December 1, 2016. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Jake Gyllenhaal, an Academy Award nominee, has established himself as one of the finest actors of his generation. With his new production company Nine Stories, he is also on his way to becoming a filmmaker of note – sourcing material, developing it from the ground up, collaborating with bold storytellers, and shepherding the projects through release. In 2014, he starred in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, which he also produced. For his performance as Louis Bloom, Mr. Gyllenhaal received BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice, and Spirit Award nominations, as well as Best Actor citations from numerous critics’ groups. He received an Academy Award nomination, and won a BAFTA Award, for his performance as Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s classic Brokeback Mountain, also for Focus Features. Working with some of the world’s finest filmmakers on both independent and studio features, Mr. Gyllenhaal has also starred in David Ayer’s End of Watch, which he executive-produced; Dennis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed Prisoners and Enemy, playing a dual role in the latter; Richard Kelly’s cult hit Donnie Darko; Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw; Jean-Marc Vallee’s Demolition; Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest; Jim Sheridan’s Brothers; Duncan Jones’ Source Code; David Fincher’s Zodiac; Sam Mendes’ Jarhead; John Madden’s Proof; Miguel Arteta’s The Good Girl; Brad Silberling’s Moonlight Mile; Nicole Holofcener’s Lovely & Amazing; Joe Johnston’s October Sky; and Ed Zwick’s Love & Other Drugs, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2014, Mr. Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s Constellations and his musical theatre debut in the Encores! production of Little Shop of Horrors. The actor made his New York stage debut in 2012 starring in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, for the Roundabout Theatre Company, which earned him nominations from the Drama League and the Lucille Lortel Awards. The latter marked his first stage work since 2002, when he starred on London’s West End in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival ofThis is Our Youth, for which he won an Evening Standard Theater Award for Outstanding Newcomer. He recently formed Nine Stories, a production company acquiring and developing new material. The company is in development on a number of titles, including Denis Villeneuve’s The Son, which is based on Jo Nesbo’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name; a scripted limited series for A&E centered on cults throughout history; and the cartel drama The Man Who Made It Snow, to be directed by Antoine Fuqua. Additional projects in development include Theater of War, based on an episode of “This American Life,” which will be directed by Alex Timbers; and Ubisoft’s film adaptation of the Tom Clancy video game “The Division,” in which Mr. Gyllenhaal will also star. Through Nine Stories, he has produced Stronger, inspired by a true story and based on The New York Times bestseller of the same name. The movie, directed by David Gordon Green and to be released in 2017, is the deeply personal account of the heroic journey of Boston Marathon survivor Jeff Bauman (whom Mr. Gyllenhaal portrays). He currently stars in Focus Feature’s Nocturnal Animals.

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR FEED.Yep. This is THE TWO SHOT PODCAST. No. It’s not Thursday.  We thought we’d do a TWO EPISODE TWO SHOT PODCAST WEEK!  Why? Why not. Let’s kick it off shall we? This week we travel to London to meet the incredible writer NICK PAYNE.  Maybe you’ve seen Nick’s plays over the years at the Bush theatre, The Donmar Warehouse, perhaps the Royal court. Maybe even on Broadway. Well, lucky you if you have cos he’s a class writer. Recently you may have been glued to BBC1 watching his series WANDERLUST that’s coming to an end very soon. Or maybe you’re one of those people who’s saying it’s “filth” or “I didn’t pay my TV licence for this!” Well, it’s always good to get a reaction eh?If you haven’t seen it THEN DO. IT'S CLASS!! Catch it all on BBC iplayer in the uk and soon to be on NETFLIX.  Craig sat down with Nick in London and that’s where they began the natter. Are we a nation of prudes? Do people jump on the bandwagon to complain about so-called filth without having seen it? They discuss so much more to about what makes Nick tick and the differences between writing for theatre and the pressures of creating a full series for TV.  It’s a cracking natter and we’ll sure you agree that Nick is great company...Just to say that this episode was recorded solo as Producer Griff was up north but the difference in sound is down to Craig and his Zoom H5 which doesn’t have the slickness as norm but we know that after 10mins or so your ears will adjust and you’ll be grand.Enjoy. Back in my college days when, after the ingestion of a substantial quantity of adult beverages, the conversation topic amongst my friends inevitably steered to the meaning of life, my standard contribution was that life had no meaning, it was simply the sum of the choices we make. I then proceeded to a) throw up, b) pass out, or c) grab another beverage. See? Choices. Who hasn’t put themselves in the position to wonder “What if?” or played the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” game when it comes to the choices we’ve made in life. Well, British playwright Nick Payne plays that game theatrically with his characters in his 2012 play Constellations, which is running in its North Bay premiere engagement at Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse. It’s a two-character piece that follows the relationship of quantum physicist Marianne (Melissa Claire) and bee-keeper Roland (Jared Wright) from their first meet through a multitude of life situations. Each situation lasts but a few minutes and is presented multiple times, with slight or major derivations each time. Marianne may confess infidelity, then Roland may be the guilty party. Roland may forgive her. Or not. He may be compassionate. Or violent. They may speak to each other in British accents. Or American Sign Language (a fascinating scene.) Their relationship may endure. Or not. It’s an interesting exercise but hardly original (see the film Sliding Doors, for example). It takes off from the concept of mulit-verses, which would take substantial research and writing time to explain fully, but I refuse to spend more time writing this review than it took to watch this production, which clocked in at the performance I attended at a very brisk 63 minutes. For a pretty good primer on the subject, check out the episode of Family Guy that covers the material. What the show is more than anything is a challenge for its artists, and director Juliet Noonan and actors Claire and Wright meet the challenge. Performed in the round in 6th Street’s Studio theatre, what could easily bore an audience with its repetitive nature holds the audience from beginning to end, though the short running time is also key. I’m not sure I could sit through two hours of a show structured like this. Claire’s and Wright’s ability to play the scenes with different shadings and maintain the characters’ credibility is a tribute to their talent. Scenes take emotional leaps that would throw many actors, but with a simple light or sound cue the transformation is almost immediate. Director Noonan keeps her cast in almost perpetual motion over an eye-catching, well-lit, yet simple set that evokes the vastness of time and space. With each shift in movement and placement comes a different version of the story. I’m not sure what the big picture is here, or if there’s even a big picture to be found. One could go mad contemplating the infinite possibilities in life. Or one could go see this show. Your choice. Constellations plays at Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse through September 24th. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm For more information, go to 6thstreetplayhouse.com

Gary and Roscoe's "little grey cells" get a workout when rising star and Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Jon Michael Hill Read Bio visits the show. Coming to you remotely from the new 80-seat 1700 Theatre performance space at Steppenwolf. Jon is currently starring in Constellations by Nick Payne at the Upstairs Theater at Steppenwolf, along with the luminous Jessie Fisher. "It's a beautiful, elliptical and elegant exploration of all that is possible when two people meet," says Artistic Director Anna D. Shapiro. "It deals, simultaneously, with the beauty and mystery found in the unknowable vastness of the universe and the ways in which we attempt to define ourselves in a desperate effort to stave off entropy." Only 80 minutes, and it will blow your mind. Constellations runs through July 3. Jon also co-stars as Detective Marcus Bell with Johnny Lee Miller, Lucy Lui and beloved Chicago actor Aiden Quinn in the hit CBS series Elementary.......the show that imagines Sherlock Holmes living in modern-day Manhattan, helping the NYPD solve crimes. It's Gary's favorite show! No kidding. After discussing the new 80-seat 1700 Theatre performance space and adjoining Front Bar read full story here, we get down to business with Jon about acting, his upbringing, past shows (including his Tony Award-nominated performance in Tracy Letts' Superior Donuts!), and his band The Wolves. Jon and the band can be seen in the 1700 Theatre on July 13 & 14. Tickets are scarce and only $12. Gary tells of some notable figures from Jon's hometown of Waukegan, IL, including Ray Bradbury, Vincent Price, Jerry Orbach, Jack Benny, Otto Graham, and film actor of the1930s-1950s, Mickey Kuhn, who appeared with Vivien Leigh in both. Mickey Kuhn Jon shares his love of Chicago, all kinds of music, and classic films, from Wings of Desire to The 400 Blows to Army of Shadows. Mr. Hill is certainly somewhat to keep and eye on as his career continues to move forward in leaps and bounds. Stage, television and film actor, musician, film lover, and about the nicest guy you will ever meet, Jon Michael Hill is Booth One all the way! Kiss of Death - Jane Little, world's longest serving orchestra musician. Ms. Little collapsed during a recent performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Ironically, the symphony was performing a pops concert called "Broadway's Golden Age", and 30 seconds from the end of Irving Berlin's "There's No Business Like Show Business", the long-time bassist collapsed and was carried backstage by fellow musicians. She never regained consciousness. There was sadness among orchestra members and patrons alike, but also a sense of poetic beauty to the timing of Little's death, doing what she so loved for more than 70 years. Hollywood could not have scripted it better. Jane Little was 87. read full obit

What can happen when two people meet? The possibilities are endless, but every relationship winds up following a single path, better known as “what actually happened.” But what about all of those alternative possibilities, the relationship roads not taken, the places the relationship might have gone? We see some of those alternative realities in Nick Payne’s 2012 play, Constellations, now in its Broadway debut at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory are involved in this story — both in the play’s underpinnings and in the words spoken onstage by actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson. So there are stars of several kinds in Constellations; New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood tells us if they shine brightly enough for Broadway.
