This is my story of being found by Jesus Christ - a story of His eternal purpose, and His immeasurable and irresistible grace. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-johnstone/message
"God Breathed and Profitable" is our early discipleship course. Here’s a question for you: In your church what do you do with people who have just committed to Christ and been baptised? What do you do with them next? I believe this is a tremendously important question. Is there something that we should be teaching newly baptised believers which will establish and settle them in their new life with Jesus? My fear is that in many churches there is no strategy for the initial strengthening of new believers after they’ve been baptised. We normally just tell them to join a home group and keep coming to church. My main conviction on this point is that the very first thing we must do with new, baptised believers is to teach them the doctrine of Scripture. In other words, we must establish in them a reverence and commitment to the Bible, and get them reading it for themselves. The Apostle Peter said, “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,” (1 Peter 2:2) It is “the pure milk of the Word” which matures baby Christians and so we need to settle their respect and appreciation for the Bible immediately. We need to get new Christians reading and seeking God in the Scriptures themselves. And that is exactly what our 10-week small-group video course entitled “God Breathed and Profitable” is designed to do. It is a phenomenal course, and by the grace of God it has proven to be incredibly effective for getting believers excited about Scripture and reading their Bible’s regularly. The other thing this 10-week course does is to establish a discipline of weekly “cell/home group” attendance in our newly baptised believers. "5 Foundations" is our 'gospel response' course. It is for anyone who is responding to the Gospel in some way (whether unsaved but seeking, or recently having expressed faith in Christ). The Apostle Paul described his initial ministry to the Corinthians with these word: "According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. " (1 Cor 3:10) It is very important to lay the right foundations in the lives of people responding to the Gospel. The right foundations can lead to years, indeed multi-generations, of established maturity in Christ, and as evangelicals perhaps we might be willing to admit that in far too many churches (and evangelism ministries) there has been inadequate provision made for the early discipleship of people responding to the gospel in our meetings. For this reason I have long wished for a video-based course which we could do with people responding to the Gospel that we knew was laying the right foundations in their Christian life. Of course the exciting thing is that the Bible tells us what those foundations are. The Holy Spirit hasn’t left us without directions here. I believe there are 5 of these foundations and although we see them all over the New Testament, perhaps they are laid out most clearly in Heb 6:1-3. There we read that when people are responding to the Gospel we are to teach them: What repentance is. What faith is. What water baptism is all about. What baptism in the Holy Spirit is. What the future holds for them (especially what the final resurrection and eternal judgment are all about). And that’s exactly what our “5 Foundations” course does. It has been specifically designed to help people who respond to the gospel message, whether through some kind of “altar call” in your church, or any other way they present themselves. The course gives you as a church a tool to help these people take their first few steps toward a new life in Jesus. This course is about God and how we can know Him. In a world where so often the knowledge of God is treated as irrelevant and unnecessary, the words of Jesus stand in stark contrast: "This is eternal life, that they may know YOU the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." So according to Jesus to know God is to have eternal life! But can God be known? Why does He seem so distant? What explains the inherent religiousness of man? Do all people know there is a God? How can we come to know the truth about Him? Is it possible even to know Him personally? These are very important questions, and in this series Steve Johnstone will show you what the Bible says about them. Whether you're a non-Christian who is seeking the truth, or a skeptic with an eye on the Christian scene, or a believer wanting to secure your faith, this course is exactly what you're looking for.
