And to have a right perspective in trials, what we need is wisdom that comes from above. We need to recognise that we are at the end of ourselves and that God (and only He) has the wisdom that we lack. How do we define wisdom? Wisdom is the God-given ability to apply His instructions for living our daily lives. This is not about mere knowledge, but practical living.
Chad Coley Series in James/ Faith That Works How To Respond To Trials James 1:2-4 16 February 2020Trials are the crucible that reveal who we really are. To respond rightly when life gets tough, we first need to have a joyful attitude. That is, we are to understand trials as from God. Joy is not about emotions, as we may still be downcast, but it is the decision to look up in faith. Don't be surprised if trials come your way, instead expect them in this fallen world: but use them as an opportunity to reflect Christ. Our natural response to trials is to seek the quickest way of escape. However, James exhorts us to view trials with a sense of deep-seated confidence in the goodness of God.Remember, trials are refining. The intention God always has for trials is moving us towards holiness and joy. If our response if not right though, they can become temptations instead. We can endure trials because we know they will end, and God is with us always. Desire the outcome of trials. The testing of faith produces endurance. It purges us from sin, and purifies our faith so that we may be mature and complete. So the Christian’s maturity depends on their response to their trials. If we submit to God and are faithful to endure the trials He allows in our lives, then, as James says, we will be lacking in nothing.
Chad Coley Series in James/ Faith That Works A Portrait of James James 1:1 9 February 2020 James' challenge for his readers is to live out their faith. True faith always demonstrates a love for God, and others. James was not a disciple in Jesus' time, but believed after (John 7:2; Mark 6:1-6). Proximity to Christ does not guarantee belief. But in James' letter, he regards Christ as very God. James' challenge to us is not to be a Christian in name only, but in deed. James was a shepherd who cared about his sheep. He called his readers to repentance and a service pure in heart. The book of James is a challenge to live faithful lives that are consistent with the belief we profess.
