What does it mean to welcome someone who is 'not one of us'? This question is at the heart of Paul's most personal letter to Philemon, his family and the church in Colosse. He writes, '... so if you consider me your partner, welcome him (Onesimus the slave) as you would welcome me'. It is clear what Paul is saying and asking of the church. You should expand your welcome beyond your imagination. Paul aligns Onesimus, the runaway slave who has stolen and wronged Philemon, with himself. You couldn't get two more different people, yet Paul says to Philemon and the whole church, treat us the same. What is going on here? Every church wants to be welcoming until, perhaps, it becomes too uncomfortable. Welcome was never meant to be an easy characteristic of church life. Welcome is costly, it is challenging, it disturbs and for some, it is plain frightening. But welcome is also at the heart of the gospel because welcome says you belong, and to belong is the invitation of Jesus to all. Now that is good news!

Tychicus was a minister used of the Lord much in the life of Paul. No higher compliment can be given to a minister than that given to Tychicus--a faithful minister. He was also used of the Lord to comfort the hearts of the saints at Colosse.

The letter of Colossians was written by Paul to a church he had not been to, to people he had not met. The letter no doubt was a blessing to that church then and is still blessing churches today.
When reading the bible, people may have a tendency to skip through Paul's greetings. At the end of his letters, he starts telling the people “thank you” and “greet (fill in the blank), but there is some good stuff found in his greetings if we will take the time to read them and such is the case in the letter of Colossians. Yes, Paul greets a lot of people, some even from another church (Laodicea), but if you break down some of these people's lives from what he says about them, one can learn a lot! Like Epaphras for example. Epaphras was a prayer warrior and he interceded on behalf of the church at Colosse, and also for Laodicea and Hieropplis. But in this greeting, we find out that Paul wrote a letter to the church at Laodicea...Where is this letter?!?! We do not have it in our bibles because nobody has the original to copy from! What did Paul say to the church at Laodicea?!?! I guess we'll find out in heaven!
What does it mean to be “devoted” to something? I remember when I was a kid, sports players were “devoted” to a team. They played with one team their whole career. I don't know of any player today that can say that because they follow the money. Whoever pays the most is where they go. To be “devoted” to something means you endure, you continue, even when things get hard. You don't quit. Paul tells the church at Colosse to “devote” themselves to prayer and be watchful, with thanksgiving in their hearts. He is telling them to pray with expectation and to thank God for what is He is going to do when He answers their prayer! But if there is a delay, if the answer doesn't come as fast as you think it should, if the hardship continues, don't give up...keep grinding!
Today, we begin our study on the prison epistle of Colossians. Colossians is located about 100 miles east of Ephesus. The church here was primarily composed of Gentiles. This epistle to the Colossians is one of four “Prison Epistles” along with Ephesians, Philippians and Philemon. According to Colossians 4:16, this epistle was to be read to the neighboring church of Laodicea, and a letter that was written to the Laodicea's (not included in the canon of Scripture) was to be read to the saints at Colosse.Paul wrote all of these epistles during his first imprisonment while he was in Rome awaiting trial before Ceasar. Internal evidence suggests that though Paul had not visited Colosse (2:1), Timothy and Epaphras (1:7) had evangelized the city and founded the church during Paul's 3 year stay in Ephesus while on his third missionary journey. The epistle was written to combat certain heretical teachings that had crept into the church and have never gone away! We will address these heresies as we go through this powerful epistle. These false teachings were Gnosticism; Legalism, Mysticism and secular philosophy. False teachers also denied the deity of Jesus Christ. They taught that He was a created being and not the Creator Himself. They taught a false gospel of salvation via works or rituals or sacramentalism as opposed to the true gospel of His all-sufficient atonement for sin that grants salvation to sinners by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, not of works or ritual lest any man should boast. What is said about Jesus Christ in chapter 1 reveals His preeminence over all creation and every created being and not only exposes as heresy, but renders useless all worldly, secular philosophies. It puts the nail in the coffin of legalism and every any any religious “ism”. Mysticism. Asceticism. Protestantism. Catholicism. Hinduism. Buddhism. Islam. Mormonism. Glory to God for the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is only because of the redemption that is in His blood, that we have forgiveness of sin and fellowship with God. See what the saints in heaven declare in Revelation 5:9. In and through Christ alone, we are delivered from the power of darkness. In and through Christ alone, we have peace with God. In and through Christ alone, we are translated into the kingdom of God's dear Son!! In this letter, we also learn that among the glorious mysteries of our faith in Scripture is the mystery of Jesus Christ, the hope of glory, dwelling in the midst of those who belong to Him.Come join us as we journey through this letter of Paul, and discover how the preeminence of Jesus Christ is meant to affect our marriages. Our earthly vocations. Our child rearing. Our prayer lives. Our stewardship of time, finances and spiritual. And last, but not least, our relationship with one another in the body of Christ. SELAH
We begin a series in the books of Colossians and Thessalonians. We start out with the first 2 verses of Colossians, where Paul calls the Christians at Colosse saints and faithful brethren.
Would they win by arguing? Never, a small-town leader warned residents in Adirondack Park where a pitched battle between environmentalists and small-business owners ignited the “Adirondack Wars.” The name described their fight whether to save the area’s pristine wilderness in upstate New York or develop it. “Go back wherever you came from!” a local leader had shouted at an environmentalist. But soon a new message emerged. “Don’t yell at each other. Try to talk to each other.” A Common Ground Alliance was formed to build bridges between warring factions. Civic dialogue led to progress—with nearly a million acres of wild land protected even as Adirondack towns grew more prosperous than they’d been in twenty years. Peaceful coexistence is a start, but Paul taught something even better. To the new believers in Colosse, he said, “Rid yourselves of . . . anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips” (Colossians 3:8). Paul urged them to exchange their old ways for a new nature in Christ. “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience,” he wrote (v. 12). The invitation is offered today to all believers: surrender our old cantankerous lives to new life in Christ. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace” (v. 15). Then, in our peace, the world will see Jesus.
The word “continue” carries another option with it...don't continue. How many times has a parent said, “Stop doing (fill in the blank),” but you keep doing it. Then you hear, “If you keep doing that (continue), you're going to get a spanking (Or a time out)”? Then, since you continued to do the thing they said to quit doing, you get your punishment. The parent was implying “Do not continue doing what you are doing” when they said “If you continue doing that...” You had a choice to make...right? To continue or not continue. Paul tells the church at Colosse they have started strong in the faith, and now they have accepted Jesus, they must continue to follow him which implies you have a choice: continue to follow Jesus or don't continue to follow Jesus. Jesus said the same thing to his disciples in John 15, “Remain in me” which implies there is another option, “Don't remain in me...” Where are you? Are you continuing to follow Jesus?
Paul uses a three letter word that is so powerful in his letter to the church at Colosse, “Let.” He says, “Let your roots grow down in him,” and “Let your lives be built on him.” In other words, we have to give God permission to work in our lives. He just doesn't overwhelm us, overpower us and say, “I am God and I am going to do this in your life whether you like it or not!” No, we have to give Him permission. Every day, we have a choice, Am I going to continue to follow Jesus? Am I going to allow Jesus to work in my life? Am I going to get in the word and let my roots grow deep into Jesus so I can stand strong when storms come? Am I going to build my life on the immovable stone, Jesus, so when the strong waves come against me, I will be protected and able to stand strong? Give God permission to work in you and through you, and you will be amazed at what Jesus will do!

Title: A Time to Reason and A Time to Leave Text: Acts 19:8-10 FCF: We all struggle doing what God has commanded to grow His church. Prop: Because God will gather and grow His church, we must make disciples of those who are willing to hear. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 19. In a moment we'll read from the Legacy Standard Bible starting in verse 8. You can follow along in the pew bible or whatever version you prefer. Last week Paul arrived in Ephesus to find Jews whose profession was somewhat questionable. Paul searched for evidence of the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence, and discovered that the 12 men before him were not yet believers in Jesus as their Messiah. After sharing the gospel with these men, they believed and submitted to baptism in His name. The Spirit descended upon them afterward confirming that even Baptistic Jews could become part of the assembly of Christ. Today we will have the first two years of the third missionary journey summarized for us in only a couple scenes. Luke is not recording the book of Acts as an exact history but rather evidence that the faith Theophilus received was genuine and trustworthy. Luke then is describing more how the gospel spread throughout the Roman Empire rather than giving all the details of its expansion. So please stand with me to give honor to and focus on the reading of the Word of God. Invocation: Sovereign Lord, we approach You today to meet You again in Your word. We ask that You will be with us, and that You will send Your Spirit among us to grow our faith through the means of grace found in Your word preached. We ask that You will show us Your providential control of Your church and our place in its gathering and growth. Help us Lord to play our parts well, not for our glory and not even for the sake of those to whom we minister, but for Your glory and Yours alone. We ask this in the name of Your dear Son… Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] In the game of pool, you use a cue ball to strike other billiard balls into pockets along the table. If after you pocketed a ball, I asked you what knocked the ball in, you could reply in a number of different ways. To some degree you could say that the cue ball knocked in the ball. This is somewhat true, but in reality, we all know that cue balls don't spontaneously begin moving. As Newton observed, objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless an outside force acts upon them. So, you wouldn't be wrong that the cue ball pocketed the other ball – but you wouldn't really be right either. It would be the same if you said the cue stick pocketed the ball. Surely the cue stick and the cue ball played their part, but ultimately, we'd all have to agree at some point that the player… you… knocked it in. We have observed many times in the book of Acts that the Lord is at work to expand and guide His church. We've seen this over and over again, and news flash, we'll see it again today. But alongside that truth we have also seen that God often uses human agents to accomplish His purposes. God is gathering and growing His children and preparing them for the kingdom that is coming. He does this often by using His own people. It may be the player that knocks in the ball, but the cue ball doesn't let that get in the way of doing its job to the best of its ability. Ok, bad example, the cue ball doesn't make choices on its own. But if you understand the analogy – why would we want to be anything else other than God's cue ball… Let's look at verse 8. I.) God is still gathering and growing His church, so we must share the gospel cogently and compellingly. (8) a. [Slide 3] 8 - And after he entered the synagogue, he continued speaking out boldly for three months, i. Luke continues to record the key events that took place as the third missionary journey began. ii. Paul arrives in Ephesus and after seeing 12 men come to Christ from Baptistic Judaism, he immediately goes to the Jew first with the gospel of their own Messiah. iii. He enters the synagogue and continues to speak boldly for three months. iv. There are a number of details we should notice here. 1. First, Ephesus is the capital city of the Roman province of Asia. It is the center for trade in the eastern part of the empire. It boasted around 250,000 citizens, which does not include slaves. Not to mention the number of people who used this city for travel throughout the empire. This was a massive city. At any given time, it would not be a stretch to think there could have been a million people roaming the streets. 2. Paul is said to go to a synagogue, singular. But with a city this large, and if Josephus is to be believed, with such a large Jewish population, it is more than likely that there were several synagogues in the city. 3. Why then would Paul only go to one of them? 4. It is possible that Luke uses the word synagogue to speak of the system itself and not one particular building. 5. It is also possible that Paul only went to the synagogue closest to him. Synagogues tended to divide along certain perspectives on the Jewish faith. It may be that this particular synagogue would have been the one closest to the teachings of Christ and most likely to receive Him in true faith. 6. In any case, Paul goes to this synagogue in the city of Ephesus and speaks for 3 months. 7. This detail in and of itself is an anomaly to all the book of Acts. 8. Paul has never been able to continue long in preaching in the synagogues before he was run out and rejected. 9. 3 months is easily the longest he's been able to continue to speak. 10. And Luke points out to us that it isn't because he was being slow to reveal the truth or softspoken about it either. Instead, he spoke boldly about the truth of the gospel… b. [Slide 4] reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. i. Paul boldly engaged them with the gospel from a logical and persuasive level. ii. Paul, although the first to admit that it is the Spirit's power that regenerates and enables men to receive faith in Christ, does not take that to mean that he can be flippant or unpolished in his presentation of the gospel message. iii. Paul uses logic to assert that the gospel is a valid and reasonable conclusion based on the Old Testament Scriptures. iv. Paul uses sound arguments to prove that this Jesus is the Messiah prophesied of old. v. From an epistemological standpoint, Paul attacks the strongholds of false belief and false thinking while defending the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. vi. Paul is an example to all of us, that though the triune God leads to the conversion of a man's soul – the human agent must be faithful to present a cogent and compelling argument for the gospel. c. [Slide 5] Summary of the Point: If anyone ever had a reason to utterly give up on a people group, it would have been Paul. How many times has he been run out of synagogues? How many times have his own people rejected the gospel? How many times have the Jews chased Paul out of town? Yet here he is, once again, sharing the gospel with the Jews. But the Lord blessed him in Ephesus. Many were persuaded. Many believed what Paul taught about the kingdom of God. Paul didn't give up. Why? Because he knew that God is still gathering and growing His church from all the nations of the earth. To the Jew first and also to the Greek. Because he knew this, Paul did all he could to reason and persuade his countrymen of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He gave a message that was cogent and compelling. Not because that is what wins people to faith in Christ… but because that is what pleases our Lord Jesus. To speak well of the hope we have in us. And guess what CBC? God is still gathering and growing His church today. In Columbus, in Michigan, in the USA, and in all the world, the Lord is still gathering and growing His church. We are part of that grand plan. What is our part to play? Well certainly some of our part is to share the gospel cogently and compellingly. We must present a well-reasoned, logical, powerful, and persuasive gospel of Jesus… because that is what the gospel of Jesus Christ is. The gospel itself is well reasoned, logical, powerful, and persuasive. Transition: [Slide 6 (blank)] But this is not the whole responsibility placed on us as God continues His plan to gather and grow His church. We have more to do than simply to present the gospel in a logical and persuasive manner. Let's look at what happens when Paul encounters resistance. II.) God is still gathering and growing His church, we must use our time and energy efficiently for the growth of Kingdom citizens. (9-10) a. [Slide 7] 9 - But when some were becoming hardened and were not believing, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, i. After three months of reasoning and persuading many about the kingdom of God with Jesus as the head of this Kingdom, eventually Paul met familiar resistance. ii. Something is happening here in the text that we need to see in order to really understand what these Jews are doing. iii. In quick succession Luke uses an imperfect passive verb, followed by an imperfect active verb, followed by a present active participle. iv. Perhaps you think I just spoke in tongues
Paul tells the church at Colosse to watch out for the false teachers that will soon come to their fellowship to try and persuade them that there is more to it than what Paul has taught them. They will come with fancy words and eloquent speech trying to convince the people they lack something even though they are following Jesus. It's the same message Satan used in the Garden of Eden, “God is withholding something from you, Eve...” Unfortunately, Eve fell for the lie and was deceived and we see so many people falling for the lie today. Jesus is everything we need to live now and for eternity. We lack nothing! So when the enemy comes in with lies, don't listen! Stay with the truth...stay with Jesus...and you will lack nothing!
Do you knit or know someone that does? You can take a single of strand of yarn that is not very strong, and make something that is superstrong! The person who knits will take yarn, thread it through the hook, and start knitting. When the product is done, like a blanket, it can be used because the single strand of yarn has been knitted together, twisted together, and has become strong. Paul tells the church at Colosse he wants them to be encouraged and knit together by the love of Christ. We need to be involved in one another's lives so we can be knitted together. When the thing knitted together has Jesus woven into it, it becomes unbreakable!

As the churches of the first century were planted from Jerusalem to the uttermost parts of the world, commons challenges of persecution and heresy quickly developed. Satan does not plant, he seeks pluck up and plunder. The church at Colosse was planted by a faithful minister of Christ, Epaphras (1:17). Paul had received report about this church while confined in prison. There was much to rejoice about, however there was a heretical teaching that was threatening the church. This heresy centered around the sufficiency of Christ. It was not a denial of Christ, but a demoting of Christ. Paul's heart was moved and so he wrote a needed epistle to help strengthen this church in the truth so they might do the will of God in Colossae. Pastor Bobby begins a new sermon series in Colossians with the message, “In Christ Alone”. The post Welcome to Colosse first appeared on Grace Baptist Church Knoxville, Tennessee.
When you tell someone you're going to pray for them...DO IT! Right then and there...Don't wait until later because you may forget! My own daughter who is in high school has told me how people would say to her they would pray for her but she knew they wouldn't, that they were just being nice. Epaphras was a prayer warrior, he was an intercessor on behalf of the church at Colosse as well as other churches. Paul says he literally wrestled with the enemy when he prayed. I want someone like that praying on my behalf! That's how we should be as the body of Christ! Wrestling with the enemy, fighting for one another, pushing back darkness so we can have victory!
Did you know Paul didn't start the church in Colosse? In fact, as far as we know, he never even visited them! So how did they hear the gospel? How did a congregation start filled with Gentiles who love Jesus? More than likely it started with a man named Epaphras who was a coworker of Paul. He had learned from the best and at some point, he went on a mission himself preaching the gospel in Colosse and the Holy Spirit did a mighty work through him! We only have a few verses about Epaphras but what we do have shows us what a man of God he was and how he inspires us to be like him!

During the time when Paul wrote his letter to the church in Colosse, there were debates and controversies surrounding the identity of Christ. The church found itself navigating these disputes, influenced by the diverse cultures, ideas, and philosophies present in the city. This week, we are focusing on Jesus, the Son of God, as He is revealed as the image of God, highlighting His supremacy over all things, His role in Creation, and His work in the New Creation.

Pastor Matt returns with the next sermon in our study of the book of Colossians, the letter Paul wrote to the church in Colosse while he was in prison. In this week's message, we learn what our next steps are once we are reborn in the spirit. In essence, our usual "What now God?" challenge at the end of the sermon actually BECOMES the sermon as we learn what changes we need to make going forward.
Join us for a Bible study as we begin a new book - Colossians! In tonight's study, we see Paul's greeting, blessing and prayer to/for the people of Colosse. Paul also tells of the preeminence of Christ - His preeminent of God, in creation, the church, salvation and in ministry. In our Thru the Bible study, we are journeying through the Bible, at a pace of around a chapter a week! We invite you to join us in this discovery of God's Word! Can we love someone we have never met? Absolutely! I was deeply in love with my granddaughter long before I ever held her in my arms. I prayed for her and her parents and look forward to our first time with them. Should we love and pray for believers we have not met? Yes. Paul did just that with this letter.Paul gives us a great example in the book of the Colossians. It is a doctrinal, practical, and personal letter from the apostle Paul, who never had a chance to meet them in this life. Paul seems to have never visited the city because it only speaks of him having "heard" of the Colossians' faith, and in the Epistle to Philemon, Paul tells Philemon of his hope to visit Colossae upon being freed from prison. So, if Paul did not plant the church, who did? Paul refers to a local member named Epaphras as “a faithful minister of Christ” (see Colossians 1:7–8). He may have been converted by Paul in Ephesus during Paul's third missionary journey (see Acts 19:10). It is believed that Epaphras took the gospel home to Colosse, and it spread throughout the region. Thus, Paul's letter and his desire to visit them.-----Call us: 208.524.4747prayer@watersprings.netOnline Giving: https://watersprings.net/give.phpServe at Watersprings: https://watersprings.churchcenter.com...CCLI Streaming License: 20080252 Size ECCLI Copyright License: 1406906 Size FDISCLAIMER: Closed captioning and/or transcription is being provided solely for the convenience of our viewers. 3-10-24 | Part 9 of our Colossians sermons series, "Body of Christ". Today's Bible verses are Colossians 4:7-18. When Paul wrote his letter to the church in Colosse from prison, he taught them that Christ is all that matters. Not religious rituals, not current culture teaching, but Christ is enough. This series looks verse-by-verse in the book of Colossians to see what the Holy Spirit is telling the Church about how to live as the body of Christ.
