Through The Lens of Motherhood

In this episode, Kristyn & Laura share their mission behind the podcast: to provide a space where women who are both creatives and mothers can openly discuss the joys & challenges of juggling our creative endeavors with our motherhood journeys. They share a bit about the journey to making the project happen, and also a preview of the wonderful guests we’ll be interviewing on Season 1.

In this episode, we talk to photographer Posy Quarterman, co-founder of The Family Narrative. We chat about parenting through new stages, photographing our kids as they grow up, and how what we share on social media effects our kids as they get older. Posy shares her thoughts on navigating the good and bad of instagram and being your authentic self online. She also tells us how The Family Narrative came to be and why it’s so important to find your people and create the community you crave.

Today on Through the Lens of Motherhood, Laura & Kristyn interview photographer Virginia Grueuloch, teacher of the popular Click Photo School class “Connected: Images with Heart.” Virginia shares why she initially picked up a camera after having her first child, the gift that taking photos gave her as a new mom, and why she decided to take a step back from the business of photography. We also discuss how her voice has shifted recently, and where she finds inspiration these days.

In this episode, Kristyn interviews Laura about her journey through motherhood and how her story has informed her creative voice and business. Laura shares her about the heartbreaking loss of her son (trigger warning for loss mamas), and how going through that tragedy was a catalyst for so much growth in her life. They discuss finding your calling, following your heart, and pivoting when it feels right.

Today, we are speaking to the lovely Leslie Kershaw! We loved our candid conversation with Leslie about how she juggles motherhood, creativity, and her day job. She spoke about self-care and what it means to “put your own oxygen mask on first” and how she creative images that speak so deeply to her audience.

On today’s episode, Laura interviews her co-host Kristyn Miller. Kristyn shares her motherhood journey, the moment that solidified her why, and how it has informed the way she sees life and the images she creates. They discuss what it means to feel a moment and capture it, and how having intention and deep purpose has brought about great clarity for Kristyn. She also shares her thoughts on competition and comparison in the photography industry, and how building community has been such a blessing in her business and life.

We received a lot of requests for an episode on Imposter Syndrome, so we’re sharing our thoughts on what it is, why it’s so normal, and how to overcome it.

Our conversation today is with the wonderful Courtney Larson of Inloveness Photography and Director of Click Pro. Courtney shares her journey to photography and why she always had a creative & entrepreneurial spirit. She talks about how she balances being a mother to three kids while running a business as well as a community of photographers as the Director of Click Pro, and how she avoids mom guilt while she’s at it. She shares her thoughts on being valued as an artist and why making money is never something we should be ashamed of. Her advice to newer photographers is to crunch the numbers and know your worth, because you can't live off of passion alone. Thanks Courtney for so much amazing advice and inspiration!

Today it’s another in-between episode and we’re talking about a topic on our hearts - fitting in vs. belonging. We talk about what the two concepts mean to us, and why so many of us feel the need to fit in so that we can be validated by our community. Where do we look for validation? Who do we create for? Why do we want to fit in so much? Curiousity is a beautiful way to figure out who you are and what makes you uniquely you. Ask questions, explore your passions and interests, and go within to find your own acceptance and true belonging. This is the work that we all have to do, our contracts as humans, to find ourselves and our own internal knowing that we inherently belong, that we are inherently worthy.

Jenny Stein is the beloved host of the popular podcast, The Family Photographer. We absolutely loved chatting with her about photography and motherhood, and asking her all about what life is like with 5 kids. She shared her thoughts on managing social media when it comes to our children, and how we interact with it ourselves, especially knowing that we are only seeing other people’s highlight reels.    We talked about Jenny’s passion for 365 projects, why she does them, and how they’ve evolved through the years. She shares why she believes that personal projects are so important for our wellbeing as moms and what she’s learned by doing them.

We love personal projects! A 365 is simply a project you commit to doing everyday for one year. For photographers, that means taking a photo everyday. Personal projects (and especially ones you commit to do everyday) are a great way to expand your creativity, tap in to your voice, grow as an artists, and simply document life. Today we’re chatting about why we love them, how they help us, and the tips we gathered along the way.
