Drawing upon powerful examples, Dr. Boss discusses physical ambiguous loss and psychological ambiguous loss due to dementia from disease, brain injury etc. She clarifies that Ambiguous Loss is not a result of pathology, but rather the ambiguity of the circumstances of loss. Using examples like the families of 9-11 she describes the understandable impact on a family when a parent is gone but loss cannot be substantiated. With the aim of building resilience rather than pathologizing, Dr. Boss discusses the Psychological Family, the Family Narrative and the ability to engage Dialectical Thinking - 'my husband is both absent and present in our hearts and minds.' Dr. Boss references Victor Frankel's Importance Of Finding Meaning, Adjusting Mastery Up Or Down and discovering 'New Hope' by risking change.

This week in honor of Li-Fraumeni Syndrome Awareness Month, we have selected this episode from February 2022 to re-share. It features Whitney O'Connor who discovered her link to Li-Fraumeni Syndrome when diagnosed with breast cancer. Li-Fraumeni Syndrome is just one of the many genetic mutations that can lead to a breast cancer diagnosis. Whitney was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called the Li-Fraumeni Syndrome. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice – the first time at 30 and then again at 32. While her diagnosis of Li-Fraumeni Syndrome provided the hint to a cancer mystery, it also gave Whitney a built-in support system because the gene ran in her family. In this episode, Whitney reads from her piece “The Cancer Gene” from Wildfire Magazine's 2021 “Family” issue. A good system in your photography business is one that allows you to maximize your profits while making the best use of your time and talents. Enter: the Simple Sales System, a revolutionary way to run a profitable, sustainable business that you love.Introduction (2:25)What is the #1 mistake people make when creating systems? (3:46)People over-complicate what a system is. A system is simply a repeatable, efficient workflow. The better you get at systems, the less thinking you have to do, you make fewer mistakes and you give a more consistent experience to your client. How do you find time for organization? (6:19)There is a misconception that you have to do everything yourself. Someone else may be able to do a task faster, more efficiently, and with less mistakes, which can make it cheaper than doing it yourself. Lean into the things you are good at, and outsource and automate the rest. How did you overcome the mindset of “to earn more you have to work more”? (9:33)After my divorce, I had to provide for my family,  and I had to make more money without spending more time. So I mapped out the IPS process and figured out which aspects made it work so well, and then figured out how to do those things in an automated or remote way. That is how the Simple Sales System was born. With your Simple Sales System, do people just order prints and albums online? (17:34)Pic-time approached me when they saw I was making more money using their gallery software than their other family photographers. I shared my system with them and they then created a marketing automation based on it. So now the system to order products is really user-friendly and presented in a beautiful way.How do you keep yourself from burning out as a photographer? (22:55)The little things that need to get done take up so much of your time, but those are not the things that make your business great, like connection with clients, or the photos you make. Always be on the lookout for the next thing you can get off your plate. How do you stay on track with systems you create? (25:39)First and foremost, get a CRM. How do you move past not knowing your numbers and creating a business you can be proud of? (28:35)Give yourself grace – there are many businesses out there at this stage. But knowing your numbers will enable you to make decisions that make your business successful. Other than the Simple Sales System, you also teach “Revenue on Repeat”. Tell us more. (32:09)I found myself in a situation where I couldn't work for a few months, and I needed to stabilize my income. I realized that a membership model where people pay a monthly fee towards their session was beneficial for both me and my client. Do you have any success stories to share? (38:18)Speed Round! (40.52)What are you creatively curious about (44:36)How other people run their businessesDiscover more about Annemie TonkenWebsite:  http://thiscantbethathard.comFacebook: Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/thiscantbethathard Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thiscantbethat Bio: Annemie Tonken is a North Carolina-based family photographer, co-founder of The Family Narrative conference, and host of the top-rated photography business podcast, This Can't Be That Hard. I started my photography business in 2010, and went full time with it in 2011. In 2017, I co-founded The Family Narrative, which was - in a way - a second business, then in 2019, I launched This Can’t Be That Hard, which is now the business on which I spend the most time. As a three-business-running parent, you can bet I stress about the impact my work life has on my home life and my ability to show up meaningfully for my kids… and I know I’m not the only one that stresses about that issue. So today I’m going straight to the source and chatting with my almost-15-year-old son Oliver about his experience from the other perspective. Show notes: thiscantbethathard.com/podcast/084

In 2019, I gave a talk at The Family Narrative called “Creating a Business that Feeds Your Soul (and Your Family)”. My initial intention was to put together a talk on pricing, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt like the talk needed to be about alignment. Pricing, after all, isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing… but in order to work, pricing DOES need to be in alignment with your business model and your market. This episode is the second part of that talk, covering the five areas of your business that need to be aligned in order to be successful (check out Episode 38 for part one if you haven’t listened already). To go with these episodes, I’ve created a MONSTER download that will guide you through the alignment process, with questions, examples, and a summary of the important parts of both episodes. Leslie Kershaw is a documentary family photographer in Washington, D.C. I first met Leslie Kershaw through The Family Narrative - she was one of the teachers at our very first conference in 2017, and over the course of the three years that I’ve known her, I’ve always been so impressed… not just by her work (which is incredible), but by what has always struck me as her incredibly strong internal compass. As creatives and entrepreneurs, I think most of us struggle to stay focused, to prioritize, and to know when to say no, but Leslie always seems to have a clear path, and follows it 100%. She balances the demands of a successful photography business, a full-time job working for a pharmacy association, and life as a wife and mother of three all with incredible grace.  My original intent when I asked Leslie to be on the show was to find out more about how she did that, but our conversation going deeper. The Work-Family Narrative as a Social Defense: Explaining the Persistence of Gender Inequality in Organizations with Robin Ely

Why has women’s professional advancement stalled? A widely accepted explanation is that women’s family obligations conflict with long hours of jobs, hampering their advancement into senior organizational positions. The commonly championed solution has been policies offering flexible work arrangements designed to mitigate such conflict. Yet research shows that men, too, experience work-family conflict. Moreover, work-family policies do little to help women or men’s workplace advancement, and in fact, often hurt them. In this presentation, Ely draws from her in depth case study of a global professional service firm to ask why the belief that work-family conflict lies at the heart of women’s stalled advancement persists. She explores how this popular narrative self-perpetuates despite evidence to the contrary, and how organizations use this narrative as an explanation for women's blocked mobility partly because it diverts attention from the broader problem of a long-hours work culture among professionals. Speaker: Robin Ely, Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean, Harvard Business School
