Dr. Sian Proctor grew up the daughter of a NASA hidden figure, with the stars in her sights until a pair of glasses at age fourteen seemed to close the door on her dream of becoming a military aviator. She kept reaching anyway, pursuing a career in geoscience and science communication, coming agonizingly close to NASA selection before receiving a rejection that sent her life in a different direction. In this episode, Dr. Sian Proctor talks about the long, winding road from that childhood dream to becoming the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft; hitting a low point after a painful divorce; and the unexpected creative awakening that ultimately launched her to space. And once she got there, she did what she's always done: made art. Being of service might be the key to quieting both arrogance and self-doubt.Arrogance, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome all share the same root: a focus on self. Steph breaks down how fear and insecurity quietly drive so much of our self-centered behavior, and why a culture built around "me" leaves people feeling more isolated, not less. The shift happens when we turn our attention toward serving others, building community, and showing up for the people around us. That's where real growth, stronger relationships, and better teamwork start to take shape. In this episode you'll discover:The connection between arrogance, self-doubt, and imposter syndromeHow fear and insecurity drive self-focused behaviorsPractical ways to shift focus from self to othersThe role of humility and community in personal growthYour takeaways:All three traits, arrogance, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome, are rooted in a focus on selfFear and insecurity are the underlying drivers of self-focused behaviorsShifting focus from self to serving others can improve your relationships and teamworkChapters00:00 Introduction to the Journey of Self-Reflection01:20 Exploring Arrogance, Self-Doubt, and Imposter Syndrome07:17 The Impact of Self-Focus on Society08:54 Shifting Focus: From Self to Service12:11 Embracing Growth Through Self-Examination
Had an AHA or Insight? Share it:Alice Kao on daily authorship, childhood trauma, and six climbing gyms. When Alice Kao was three years old, her mother walked out the door carrying two large suitcases and did not turn around. When she was fourteen, her mother dropped her off alone in America near a school with some cash and left. Alice spent the next thirty years running a story about what that meant , that she was not smart enough, not pretty enough, not worth staying for. That story became the engine. It drove her through surviving alone as a teenager in a country where she did not belong, through a devastating heartbreak in Hong Kong, through building Sender One Climbing into six locations across Southern California and raising six million dollars from 115 community investors. Then she found out the way she interpreted her story was dead wrong. The facts were not what she had believed for thirty years. The wound was real. The story was not.And the voice that generated it is still there every single morning. It still wants to tell that story. If you have ever woken up and felt the weight of a story you cannot shake, the one that says you are not smart enough, not ready, not worth the room you are about to walk into , this episode is the one you need to hear. Because Alice did not heal the wound. She built a daily discipline around deciding what it means. Every morning she chooses who is at the keyboard through authorship and it is the most underrated business skill a founder can develop. Write your own story. In this episode we go into the phone call that broke the story open, the morning practice Alice has built around narrative authorship, and why imposter syndrome does not have to be gone before you can build something extraordinary.About Alice KaoAlice discovered climbing while living and working in London in 2008, following a difficult breakup. She was inspired by the healing and self-discovery that climbing brought her, which led her to co-found Sender One in 2011 upon returning to the United States with her business partners.Alice hates following rules but loves rallying people to believe in an idea. She wears her heart on her sleeve and is not afraid to cry in meetings. She was born and raised in Taiwan and moved to the US when she was 14. Alice's superpower is her ability to ask for help relentlessly, because no one has all the answers!Connect with Alice KaoWebsite | LinkedIn_____________________We appreciate you, thank you for listening. 70% aller Menschen kennen Imposter-Gedanken. Du bist also nicht allein.

Rather than speaking from personal experience, she shares four principles she believes have helped her avoid it. Throughout the episode, Rachel argues that imposter syndrome stems from outsourcing self-worth to other people's judgments, and she encourages listeners to shift their focus inward, measure progress against their own growth, and recognize that they are not imposters—they are simply people in the ongoing process of becoming. Today, I interview sisters and business partners Amy and Nancy Harrington, who both grew up shy and spent years navigating environments that made it hard to be heard, until they decided to leave their high-powered Hollywood careers and build something that could give other women the voice they had to fight for themselves.Amy rose to vice president at Warner Brothers at 27, often the youngest and only woman in the room, quietly doing the work while men took the credit. Nancy built a solitary graphic design business for nearly two decades to avoid the very rooms that made her shrink.Together, they built The Passionistas Project Sisterhood, a global community that gives women from marginalized backgrounds the space, support, and platform to finally be heard.__________________Sisters and business partners, Amy and Nancy Harrington are the co-founders of The Passionistas Project Sisterhood, a global community for passion-driven women, especially from marginalized backgrounds, to find support, purpose, and empowerment. Did you know that at one point in our lives, 70% of people experience Imposter Syndrome or now called Imposter Complex/Phenomenon. And P.S., 75% of executive women have experienced it. I've had many highly successful and motivated Type A female clients come to me wanting to be “fixed.” I always give them the same answer. This is not an on and off switch. There is no fixing. This is a process of unlearning and relearning, of noticing and reframing, and reconnecting to your body. It's using your tools when the inner critic strikes, because it will. Inner critic is simply a sign that you are leveling up and facing fear. I know easier said than done, but you can manage it. As Maya Angelou says, “When we know better, we do better.”During my conversation with guest, Jessica Wright, we talk about knowledge that we can arm ourselves with when managing on our inner critics. During the show, Jessica and I chatted about:What Positive Intelligence and the Saboteurs are.The benefits of knowing our Saboteurs and how we find out ours. If the Saboteurs remain consistent or if they can change over time.We chatted about what Jessica and my top Saboteurs are and how they show up. How does all of this relate to the inner critic and why knowledge is power. Here is more about Jessica:Jessica Wright, an ACC-credentialed Life & Career Development Coach, helps new and emerging leaders build confidence, lead with purpose, and create a lasting legacy...without sacrificing their personal lives. Because leadership isn't actually about proving yourself in the hard times. It's about support. It's about clarity. It's about helping people feel seen, heard, and connected to the mission. With a Master's degree in Transformational Leadership, Jessica helps leaders navigate the pressures of their roles, overcome burnout, and empowers them to redefine success on their own terms. Jessica is also the host of Illustrating Leadership Podcast and the creator of the Illustrating Leadership Summit. When she's not coaching or podcasting, you can find Jessica chasing down her naughty dachshund, seeking out her next cup of coffee, or starting a crafting project that she may or may not eventually finish. You can reach her at jessicawright.online.If the Brave Women at Work Podcast has helped you personally or professionally, please share it with a friend, colleague, or family member. In this practical, thought-provoking episode of Negotiating Happiness, host Adriana is joined by Brittney Ashley of Creative Dynamics to kick off a four-part series on artificial intelligence and the future of work. Together, they break down what AI actually is (and what it isn't), why it suddenly feels “everywhere,” and how it's been evolving for far longer than most people realize. With a clear, non-hype approach, Adriana and Brittney unpack common myths, explain key terms in plain language, and share real-world examples of how AI already shows up in everyday life and small business operations—helping listeners understand the basics so they can make confident decisions, avoid shiny-object distractions, and identify where AI can genuinely save time, reduce friction, and support better service. They also set the foundation for the rest of the series by introducing the bigger themes they'll return to—organizational structure, leadership and change management, and responsible, ethical use—so you leave with both clarity and a grounded starting point for exploring AI in a way that aligns with your values and goals. Who is Brittney? Brittney is an enthusiastic multi-passionate entrepreneur on a mission to revolutionize the business game. Lucinda welcomes career and leadership coach Laura Ogilvie-Jones to explore the rising corporate phenomenon of "comparativitis" where high-performing, senior professionals secretly lose confidence due to the pressures of social media, rapid technological change, and AI. Laura shares her insightful, values-driven coaching methods such as the North Arrow and Buzz Sheets to reveal how HR professionals can spot warning signs of fading confidence and foster environments of vulnerability to help leaders rebuild their self-assurance. KEY TAKEAWAYS High performers often project a polished professional image externally while secretly battling severe imposter syndrome and eroding confidence underneath. Constant bombardment from social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram pressures professionals to compare themselves to others, leading to self-doubt and second-guessing. True, sustainable leadership confidence is built not by maintaining a flawless, numeric-driven facade, but by embracing emotional intelligence, vulnerability, and self-awareness. HR can identify leaders struggling with confidence by watching for noticeable behaviour changes, such as withdrawal from opportunities, overthinking, or uncharacteristic defensiveness. BEST MOMENTS "They may well appear very confident externally... but actually underneath they might be struggling, and they might be losing confidence and having wobbles, having doubts, but they don't feel able to verbalise that." "The word I often use with my clients to talk about is 'comparativitis'. We are absolutely bombarded with images, news, communication about other people and what they're doing and how amazing they are." "When I'm working with someone one-to-one, it's the first time they've ever actually been honest, vulnerable, and authentic about what is actually going on and how they're actually feeling." "If you don't have that self-awareness, you're just, you know, blissfully carrying on." Support by buying me a ☕️Imposter syndrome shows up when you're trying to level up. You tell yourself that your progress is due to luck, or things that give you an advantage, instead of the actual growth you are experiencing. It can lead to you to downplaying your wins instead of celebrating the skill you've gained. We start by breaking down what imposter syndrome actually is, then dig into how it can look in everyday life: fear of failure, fear of regret, and the pressure that comes with bigger opportunities. I share a personal story about being asked to headline a paid Juneteenth performance and how easy it was to credit the moment to who I knew instead of the work I put in, the talent I built, and the support I earned. From there, we shift into practical mindset work for personal growth and confidence. We talk about controlling your thoughts so they don't control your actions, expecting the emotional ups and downs because success is not linear, and treating discomfort as proof you're becoming the next version of yourself. If you're chasing goals in your career, business, creativity, or health, this one will help you stop self-sabotaging and start owning your progress. If this helped you, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who needs the reminder that they're not a fraud.Support the showBecome a Supporter!
Key Takeaways From This Post In this episode of The Recruitment Marketing and Sales Podcast, Sharon Newey explores why imposter syndrome disproportionately affects the most capable recruitment business owners, what it actually costs commercially, and three practical actions you can take this week to start showing up with the authority you have already earned. You are on a call with a client you have worked with for a while. Good relationship. The conversation is going well. And then, almost as an aside, they say: “We had a really useful piece come through this week from another agency. A benchmarking report on salaries in our sector. Really timely.” They are not threatening to leave. They are not complaining. It is a throwaway comment. But something shifts. Because you know that topic. You have lived it. You have had the exact same conversation about salary expectations with four clients this month. You know what is happening in that market, why it is happening, and what businesses should be doing about it. You could have written that report. You should have written that report. But you did not. And someone else did. And now your client is talking about them on a call with you. That feeling is not a content problem. It is not a time problem. It is imposter syndrome. And it is costing your business more than you realise. The Statistic That Changes how you see This Research suggests that up to 85% of high-achieving professionals experience imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. Eighty-five per cent. That is not a niche phenomenon. That is not something that happens to people who lack confidence or ability. That is a pattern that affects the majority of people who are genuinely very good at what they do. Imposter syndrome is not evidence that you are not ready. It is frequently a signal that you are more capable than you give yourself credit for. The doubt is not a warning sign. It is a side effect of expertise. What Imposter Syndrome Actually Looks Like in Recruitment In a recruitment business, imposter syndrome rarely announces itself as imposter syndrome. It disguises itself as something far more practical. It looks like waiting until the website is ready. You know the marketing needs to happen. But the website is not quite right, so you will start once that is sorted. The website gets sorted. Then it is something else. It looks like not posting because it is not good enough. You draft something, read it back, and think: this is obvious. Everyone in my sector already knows this. So you delete it, and nothing goes out. It looks like avoiding video, permanently. You know video works. You have seen the data. But something about pressing record feels impossible, so the video conversation gets shelved for another quarter. It looks like undercharging and struggling to defend your fees. When you do not fully believe in your own authority, you drop your rate before the client has even pushed back. You discount as a reflex, not as a strategy. And it looks like watching competitors win work you know you could do better. They are not better than you. They are simply louder. They are showing up. They are saying the things you are thinking. Recognise any of that? Most recruitment directors and founders will recognise at least three of those patterns immediately. And they will have filed them under time, or priorities, or just not my thing. But that is not really what they are. Why High-Achievers are Most at Risk The people most susceptible to imposter syndrome are not the least competent. It is the opposite. The more expert you become, the more likely you are to experience it. And there is a name for this: the paradox of competence. When you are a junior recruiter, you know what you do not know. The gaps are visible and that feels appropriate. But as you become genuinely expert, your awareness of the field’s complexity increases at the same rate as your knowledge. You can see further. Which means you can also see further ahead of where you currently are. You know more, and so you are more aware of the things you do not yet know. And that awareness can feel, incorrectly, like inadequacy. There is a specific version of this that we see consistently. Many of our clients built their career inside a corporate agency. They were brilliant at what they did, and the brand gave them a platform. Candidates and clients trusted them, but some of that trust was borrowed from the institution. And then they went out on their own. Courageous, commercially smart. But it came with a hidden tax. Because now the brand is them. The credibility is theirs to build, not to borrow. And a voice surfaces that says: was it ever really me? The answer is yes. Thirty years of sector expertise does not evaporate when you hand back a corporate email address. But the voice does not always believe that, and the voice is loud. The Commercial Cost you are not Counting Imposter syndrome is not just an internal discomfort. It has a real, measurable commercial cost. And most recruitment business owners have not fully calculated it. The first cost is visibility. When you are not showing up consistently, not posting, not putting your expertise into the public domain, you are invisible to people who are actively looking for someone exactly like you. Your ideal client is on LinkedIn right now, forming opinions about who they trust. If you are not there, you are not in the conversation. Visible competitors win the work you should be winning. Not because they are better. Because they are present, and you are not. The second cost is fee pressure. Authority and pricing power are directly linked. When a client already knows who you are, has read your posts, has seen that you understand their market in a way that other recruiters do not, the fee conversation starts from a completely different position. They have already bought your expertise before you pick up the phone. When you are invisible, you are just another recruiter. And just another recruiter competes on price. We saw this play out clearly with a client who had close to thirty years in her sector. Before she started showing up consistently, she was competing on contingency terms like everyone else. Within months of building a visible presence, she was having completely different conversations. Fee negotiations became almost secondary, because clients had already bought into her expertise before terms were discussed. She went on to secure her first ever retained projects after decades of contingency work. The third cost is referrals. Referrals are generated not just by the quality of your work but by how front of mind you are. If your network has not heard from you in six months, they will refer someone else. Not because your work was not good. Because the other person was more visible at the moment the referral conversation happened. Three Things You Can do This Week These are low-risk, practical actions that genuinely move the needle. Post one piece of content about what you know, not who you are. The best content from a recruitment leader is about the market. What are you seeing in your sector right now? What are clients getting wrong? What do candidates need to understand about the current hiring picture? That is expertise sharing, not self-promotion. Start there. One post. This week. Share a client or candidate outcome. Not a polished case study. Just a moment. “We helped a client hire a head of finance last month, and here is what made the difference in the search.” Two paragraphs. It demonstrates your expertise and is built entirely from something that already happened. You are not inventing content. You are making your existing work visible. Say the thing you think is too obvious to say. Your market hears these things all the time and still makes the same mistakes. Obvious to you is not obvious to them. The insight that feels like basic knowledge inside your industry is exactly what your ideal client is waiting to read. Say it. None of these require a content strategy, a copywriter, or a professional photoshoot. They require you to decide that your knowledge is worth sharing. That is the only prerequisite. Something to Sit With Before you move on, one question worth sitting with honestly. What is the one thing you know you should be saying publicly that you have been holding back? And what is the real reason? Not the practical reason. Not the time, or the website, or the platform. The real reason. In thirty years of coaching, I have rarely met a business owner who lacked something worth saying. What I have met, time and again, are people who had everything they needed and were waiting for permission that was never going to come from anywhere external. You already have the expertise. You have earned it. The only question is whether you are going to let it stay invisible. Thanks, Sharon How We Can Help Working on your marketing consistently is one of the most important things you can do for the long-term health of your recruitment business. Visibility builds authority. Authority builds better fee conversations. And better fee conversations build the kind of business you actually want to run. Impostor syndrome is essentially a persistent inability to believe that your success is actually deserved. The underlying feeling is: "If they really knew...". If they knew how bad I am with time, how divided my heart is, or how little I know what I'm doing, they'd never listen.Regardless of your level of success, you still get hit with this feeling that you're just not enough. I've lived this. When I was a young pastor newly out of seminary, I didn't think I knew what I was doing, so I tried to pattern myself after others—trying to sound like Mark Driscoll or Chuck Swindoll. Even now as a streamer, I struggle with view counts because there is "no good number". If the number is high, I feel like I've fooled everybody; if it's low, I feel like it's what I deserve. But I want you to consider this: Is it possible that your fear of inadequacy will actually make you dependent on God? When God called Moses, Moses didn't list his education or power; he asked, "Who am I?". God's response wasn't about Moses' skills—it was simply, "I will be with you".Your feeling of calling is more important than your credentials. That feeling of "I don't know what I'm doing" actually becomes a qualifier. It keeps you praying, preparing, and making sure what you say has value. I'm here to serve you, not to feed my own ego.

The influence of comparison, imposter syndrome, and anxiety on your leadership strength. Comparison and imposter syndrome negatively impact the ability to lead. They steal confidence and stem from an anxiety response loop. The combination of comparison and anxiety, and imposter syndrome and anxiety, quite often go hand-in-hand. One of the key responses to comparison and imposter syndrome is to be diligent in pursuing what God is calling you to (motherhood, career, business ownership), while detaching from what others think of you or are doing. In other words, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. An example of how social media activates an anxiety response loop. Anxiety, Comparison, and Imposter Syndrome: Understanding the Vicious Cycle Anxiety does not simply coexist with comparison and imposter syndrome. Rather, it drives them. When your nervous system is dysregulated, it scans constantly for evidence of threat. In the context of leadership, that threat often takes the form of questions: " Am I enough or am I good enough?" How the Anxiety, Comparison, and Imposter Syndrome Cycle Works Step 1: Anxiety Activates the Nervous System Step 2: Comparison Enters Through Social Media and the Environment Step 3: Imposter Syndrome Amplifies the Fear Step 4: Anxiety Increases, Behavior Becomes Avoidant Step 5: Social Media Accelerates the Entire Loop What Comparison and Imposter Syndrome Look Like in Christian Women Leaders These behaviors disguise themselves as humility or self-awareness. Consequently, they are among the hardest patterns to recognize. Do any of these feel familiar? You: Minimize your achievements because someone else has accomplished more. Hesitate to share your expertise publicly because you fear being found out. Overprepare obsessively because you feel less qualified than others think you are. Scroll social media and feel deflated, even when your own life is genuinely good. Delay the next step in your calling until you feel more ready. Attribute your successes to luck and your failures to personal inadequacy. Replay conversations at night, analyzing every way you may have fallen short. Avoid feedback or new opportunities because failure feels unbearable. Your Identity in Christ: The Only Truth That Breaks the Cycle Here is what this cycle is working overtime to prevent you from believing: you were not made to measure yourself against anyone else. Biblical Truths These are not affirmations. They are facts. How Christian Women Leaders Can Break the Comparison and Imposter Syndrome Cycle Breaking this cycle requires addressing both the nervous system driving it and the identity lies fueling it. Here is where to begin: 1. Name the Cycle When It Starts 2. Regulate Before You Scroll 3. Audit Your Feed Ruthlessly 4. Replace the Lie with a Specific Truth 5. Renew Your Mind Before the World Gets to It 6. Test Your Own Work, Not Hers What Breaking the Cycle Looks Like in the Calm, Confident, Consistent Loop REFLECTION QUESTIONS Where does the comparison and imposter syndrome cycle most often start for you — social media, a specific relationship, or a particular environment? Which imposter lie shows up most frequently? What specific Scripture truth directly counters it? What would it feel like to measure your progress only against God's purposes for your life this week — and no one else's? Read the full show notes and access all links.

Productive Not Busy- Do Life and Business Confident Focused and with a Plan
Wayne W (00:01) Hey, welcome back to the productive not busy podcast. know, you can look successful long before you become successful. Now, you can look like a top producer in any industry with absolutely no production at all. ⁓ That's the social media craze and kind of a problem that today's society, everybody's building a movie trailer for a life that they're not actually living. Meanwhile, the fundamentals, right? Stuff that actually gets people paid. Wayne W (00:31) are dying on the vine. And what are those? Conversations, ⁓ listening, leadership, confidence, ⁓ empathy, timing, body language, ⁓ voice inflection, right? All the soft skills, your presence, ⁓ OK? You know, human stuff. I came up in an era where if the Internet shut off tomorrow, Wayne W (00:59) I could still make a living before lunch. Why? Because I was trained to talk to people. I learned how to read a room. I learned how to hear hesitation in someone's voice even before they said no. I even learned how to calm nervous sellers down. I learned to negotiate face to face, shake hands, build trust. That skill set doesn't disappear because the Wi-Fi goes out. Wayne W (01:29) But some of these newer salespeople and new real estate agents, Lord have mercy. If Instagram disappeared for a week, they would require grief counseling. Wayne W (01:42) They know how to post. They know how to edit. Wayne W (01:47) They know how to brand, but they don't know how to lead a business. And leadership is what gets you paid when the market shifts in any business. See, AI can organize information. It can summarize contracts. It can help you write emails much faster. can automate sales systems. And that's valuable. I use it. Smart people do use it. Absolutely. Wayne W (02:17) But AI cannot wake your ass up at 6am in the morning. AI cannot make you disciplined. AI can't make you care about your business or your clients. AI can't give you resilience after rejection. And ⁓ AI can't teach you to be hungry. Wayne W (02:37) And for one thing, damn sure can't coach attitude. That's the thing in leadership talks about Wayne W (02:47) why that matters. You can teach scripts, you can teach contracts, and you can teach marketing. But you can't coach somebody to want it, like really want it. I can't coach action or attitude. I can't coach accountability into somebody who's addicted to excuses. So some people want Wayne W (03:11) success the way folks want a six pack at the gym, right? They want to go to the gym and watch everybody else work out and walk out with the six pack. They want the appearance without the repetition required to earn it. Even in the real estate industry, they're getting exposed big time because of that. Look, NAR said 71 % of realtors did not close a single deal last year. ⁓ 71%. Think about that. That means Wayne W (03:41) out of every 10 agents, ⁓ seven ⁓ did actually zero and made nothing last year. Zero. Wayne W (03:50) But if you looked at their social media, you'd think they were selling beachfront ⁓ mansions to movie stars, hanging out on the beach, tanning every weekend. That's the disconnect. Everybody's ⁓ marketing. Nobody's mastering their skill. See, skills are always going to be king forever. Wayne W (04:20) Can you control the conversation? Wayne W (04:23) Can you ⁓ ask hard questions? Can you handle objections without sounding defensive, right? Can you make somebody feel safe enough to trust you with the biggest transaction and their financial decision-making life? Because that's the business. Wayne W (04:43) not your logo. Wayne W (04:46) Right. No AI generated slogan or logo. No cinematic drone footage with the music in the background is going to make you good at your job. People work with people they trust. And trust still comes from human connection. See, I worry that we're getting into a generation of professionals who are becoming allergic to discomfort. Wayne W (05:15) Every hard thing gets outsourced. Every awkward moment gets automated. ⁓ Every weakness gets filtered through some kind of technology until nobody even knows who they really are anymore. Wayne W (05:31) That's why some folks are kind of in the panic mode at the second. actually, ⁓ you know, they have to talk live to a client, no edits, no retakes, no AI, no rewrite button, just them. They freeze in their tracks. And if there's nothing underneath the branding, the whole thing collapses. Wayne W (05:54) So you want to know what separates ⁓ closers ⁓ from pretenders. Wayne W (06:01) Closers take action. They take action before they feel ready. Wayne W (06:07) Pretenders, they prepare into nausea. Closers go to trainings. Pretenders redesign their logo and their business card over and over. Closers practice scripts. And pretenders practice poses and headshots. Wayne W (06:27) Closers build competence. ⁓ Pretenders build appearances. And eventually, the scoreboard tells the truth. Look, I'm not anti-AI. That would be stupid. Technology changes. Smart people adapt. You'd be an idiot not to use tools that make you more efficient. But efficiency... Wayne W (06:55) Okay, without ⁓ effectiveness is really worthless. If you're bad at communication, ⁓ AI just helps you fail and get worse at communicating. If you lack discipline, AI just gives you a prettier excuse. Wayne W (07:16) The people who are really going to win with AI, okay, are the ones who already have the fundamentals in here. The ones who can sell ⁓ without the use of AI to scale it. The ones who know how to lead humans first and use the software to bolt onto that. Because at the end of the day, this business is still emotional. People buy certainty. People buy confidence. Wayne W (07:46) Okay? People buy energy. People buy the conviction that's in your heart. People know. And no algorithm on earth can replicate authentic human presence. You want a future ⁓ proof for yourself? Stop obsessing over looking successful and start becoming valuable. I tell people that all the time. I coach other businesses. Wayne W (08:13) Work on your communication, work on your consistency, work on your emotional control, work on your ability to handle rejection and work on your work ethic. Wayne W (08:26) because trends change. ⁓ Apps ⁓ on your phone change, platforms change, markets change, but people, people still want to feel heard. They still want to feel understood and they still want to feel led. Wayne W (08:48) And if you can do that better than the next person telling you what right now, you'll always have a seat at the table, whether AI exists or not. Wayne W (09:00) I hope you enjoyed this episode. Again, this is the Productive Not Busy podcast. My name is Wayne Weathersby, ⁓ author of the book Discomfort Zone. ⁓ I've got the podcast. Emma and Cass open with a listener question that hits a little too close to home: "I just turned 30 and I hate my job, my apartment, and the city I live in. Do I blow it all up or am I just having a moment?" Emma says blow it the f up. Cass, who spent a year deeply unhappy in her marriage, her motherhood, and her life in general, says try 5% better first. From there: Cass on the motherhood imposter syndrome that hit her like a freight train (after 27 years of never feeling it), Emma on the version she's lived with her whole life, the menstrual blood research that's genuinely wild, and an unhinged agree/disagree game powered by Cass's husband's questions. In this episode: The listener question: turning 30, hating everything, and Emma vs Cass on whether to blow it up or stay put. "Wherever you go, there you are." Cass on the year she was deeply unwell and what she did instead of running, plus the 5% rule for making your life better without burning it down. "If you're a girly pop in your 30s who has let decisions make you instead of making them, maybe it's time to fucking blow it up." Emma's case for the hard pivot, geographic escapism included. Motherhood imposter syndrome that lasted two years, the postpartum therapist who said stop waiting for the cute walks to happen to you, and the day at the park when Cass realized she was a real mom talking to real moms. Emma on feeling like an imposter in every room she walks into, including the one she literally built. Emma's run-in with a guy she used to sleep with, and a description of his anatomy you will not forget. New menstrual blood research: Dr. Gemma Evans at the Hudson Institute found menstrual plasma heals wounds 40 times faster than regular blood plasma. A review of decades of yo-yo dieting research turns out to be way less scary than we've been told, and Cass is mad about how women get shamed either way. The SPF lip gloss that Emma keeps stealing from Cass's bathroom. The toy Emma can't get enough of. Get yours HERE at Bellesa! Agree/disagree with questions from Cass's husband: texting your ex, thirst-trap likes, body counts as a red flag, fighting a goose, landing a passenger plane, men should always pay. For anyone in their late 20s or 30s who's ever wanted to quit everything by Tuesday, or felt like an imposter in a room they literally built. Learn more about your ad choices. Anxiety and the Need to Control: It's time to loosen the grip! Christian women leaders often appear to have it all together. They are admired for their willingness to do it all and keep all things running smoothly. But underneath the facade, there is anxiety and the need to control. Anxiety and control ultimately weigh heavily on overall well-being, as control is not sustainable and can quickly lead to physical, mental, and emotional turmoil. What anxiety and the need to control look like: You: Tell yourself it is just because you care. Check in on the project again — not because you do not trust your team, but because you want it done right. Rearrange the plans your spouse made. Take back the task you delegated because it would be faster to do it yourself. Map out every detail of the trip, the event, the presentation, the week. On the surface, this looks like diligence. It feels like responsibility. However, underneath it is fear — and that fear has a name. It is anxiety. And anxiety, when it goes unaddressed, almost always reaches for control. Anxiety and the Need to Control: What the Research and Science Reveal The Need to Control Is an Anxiety Response, Not a Leadership Style Where the Anxious Need to Control Comes From in Christian Women Leaders What the Need to Control Looks Like in Anxious Leadership Anxiety-driven control is rarely recognized for what it is. Instead, it shows up in behaviors that feel justifiable — even virtuous. And are often rewarded. Micromanaging Inability to Delegate Hyperplanning Indecision The Neuroscience of Anxiety and Control Faith and the Need to Control: Trusting God's Plans Over Your Own How Christian Women Leaders Can Break Free from Anxiety-Driven Control Releasing anxiety-driven control is not about becoming passive or indifferent. Rather, it is about exchanging fear-based management for faith-based leadership. Here is where to start. 1. Distinguish Control from Stewardship 2. Name the Fear Underneath the Control 3. Practice Deliberate Delegation 4. Regulate Your Nervous System Before High-Control Situations 5. Surrender the Outcome Intentionally What Releasing Control Looks Like in the Calm, Confident, Consistent Loop Your Next Step as a Christian Woman Leader This week, notice where your grip is tightest. It might be at work, at home, in a relationship, or in your own plans for the future. Ask yourself honestly: is this control rooted in stewardship — or in fear? You do not have to release everything today. Simply identify one place to loosen your grip. Awareness is always the first step toward freedom. Reflection Questions Where in your leadership or life is anxiety-driven control most active right now? What are you most afraid will happen if you release control in that area? What would it look like to trust God's plans in that specific situation this week?
