This week, Abby and Briana discuss famous disasters, accidents, and show-must-go-on moments in theatre—including a few of their most memorable moments from undergrad. The episode is dedicated to Jason Painter Price. Tell us about your favorite theatre mishaps on Twitter @whatsnextpodc! We'll share our favorites in an upcoming episode. Episode Notes: 1) While trying to find a source to back-up the Angela Lansbury story online, I found a recipe she contributed to a celebrity cookbook. It contains tomatoes. So, either the tomatoes weren't the source of an allergic reaction, or the story has been changed over the years through retellings of it. Either way, we kept it in because its a fun tale from someone who worked on the production. 2) Regarding the Iroquois ballerina: there are varied accounts about what exactly occurred. The dancer from the anecdotes is most likely Nellie Reed, who may have been as young as 17 years old. It's unclear if she was trapped in rigging, if she fell, or if she was lost to the fire in another manner. This is an excellent resource if you'd like to learn more about Nellie and the Iroquois Theatre fire: http://www.iroquoistheater.com/nellie-reed-aerial-ballet-dancer-iroquois-theater-fire-fatality.php 3) For more about Jason and ways to honor him: https://theatre.msu.edu/faculty-and-staff/jason-price/

In the inaugural episode of “What’s Next?” - in the spirit of Halloween - Abby and Briana take a deep dive into two of their favorite scary movies, Scream (1996) and Scream 2 (1997). They discuss the films’ satirical critique of the police, which of them would make a better “final girl,” the infrastructure of college auditoriums, and Matthew Lillard’s infamous tongue-acting. Content Warnings: Discussion of graphic violence (stabbing, choking, etc.) and the depiction of racialized violence in horror films. Mention of sexual assault, as relevant to the film, and the Columbine massacre.
