Beyond Creation's First Song in 8 Years + 7 Underground Metal Bands You Need to Hear — reacting to new music from Barrage, Intent to Harm, Guhn Twei, and more. Full metal reaction breakdown inside. (199 characters)In this episode of Metal Maniacs, we're reacting to 8 brand new tracks spanning the full spectrum of metal and hardcore — from Canadian Grammy-nominated tech-death veterans Beyond Creation dropping their first new single in eight years, to underground acts fighting for their first real shot.We cover Beyond Creation's comeback single "Reverence," Kansas City heavy outfit Barrage's claustrophobic new single "Closing In," Australian death/hardcore project Intent to Harm and the incredible true story behind founder Matt Turkington — a musician who lost the ability to perform extreme vocals after multiple back surgeries and taught himself guitar while recovering, flat on his back. We also dig into politically-charged French-Canadian metal/punk band Guhn Twei (two-time GAMIQ Metal Album of the Year winner), Georgia rockers Perrish 9, hard rock band Whisper to Scream, tech-death act Omittance, and DIY teenage garage band Desolate. This is what The Metal Maniacs is all about — giving underground bands a real platform alongside bigger names, breaking down the songwriting, production, and stories behind the music, and helping you find your next favorite band before everyone else does.
Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch is back with a disturbing report of increased activity across the Kenai Peninsula before turning to a recent encounter involving Marty and her grandson, Doug, near Alaska's remote McCarthy Road. The trouble began when electrical problems forced their RV off the dirt road near an old single-lane bridge dating back to 1910. While Marty remained inside the vehicle, Doug walked toward the bridge to record the scenery with his new iPhone. The forest suddenly went completely silent. Moments later, an explosive scream tore through the valley with enough force to make Doug drop the phone into a steep ravine.Looking toward a nearby bluff, Doug spotted an enormous humanoid figure standing above the road. He estimated it was more than ten feet tall.As the figure began moving in the direction of the stranded RV, Doug rushed back to warn his grandmother.Marty had already begun hearing pebbles and larger rocks striking the outside of the camper. Overcome by an intense sense of danger, she looked outside and saw a massive dark figure near the vehicle.Fearing it was preparing to attack, she loaded a shotgun and waited inside while the impacts continued. A local family eventually arrived and confirmed that they had also seen what they believed was a Bigfoot. As they attempted to help Marty and Doug leave the area, rocks were thrown into the bed of their truck.During the escape, Marty caught another glimpse of the figure shaking trees and unleashing powerful vocalizations from the timber. What began as a routine mechanical problem had left them stranded beside an isolated Alaskan bridge with something enormous closing in from the wilderness.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube ChannelEmail BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? It's time once again for Filmjitsu's most inexplicable annual tradition: The Streepening. For reasons that have long since been lost to history (and likely were never sensible to begin with), Jay again hands Mike a Meryl Streep movie proving that no matter how acclaimed the actress may be, there always seems to be another questionable stop on her journey to becoming a generational talent. This year's selection? Wes Craven's Music of the Heart.Yes, that Wes Craven. The mastermind behind A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream traded slashers for string sections in this fact-based drama about a determined violin teacher trying to save a music program in East Harlem. Was this an unexpected hidden gem from one of horror's greatest directors, or merely a detour better left unexplored? Mike tunes his instrument and finds out. After the review, the guys count down their Bottom Five Musicians, celebrating those cinematic performances that hit every wrong note for reasons ranging from questionable casting to spectacularly misguided vanity projects. Then it's onto another round of Dueling Double Bills, where cinematic connections fly faster than violin bows, before Jay closes out the show by revealing Mike's next assignment. Will The Streepening ever end? History suggests that on the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons... probably not.

The 1990s gave us meta-slashers, satanic spaceships, exploding hookers, body-swapping action heroes, teenage witches and enough Nicolas Cage insanity to sustain an entire decade. Griffey, Heath, Sam, Sophia and Nick battle to assemble the ultimate team of messed up movies from the '90s. Scream, Event Horizon, Frankenhooker, The Silence of the Lambs, Fight Club, The Craft, Candyman, Face/Off, 12 Monkeys and Hocus Pocus are only the beginning. Was the '90s actually an underrated horror decade? Is Event Horizon secretly a Warhammer movie? Does Hocus Pocus belong beside Fight Club? And which combatant walks away with the strongest four-film lineup? Watch the episode, examine the evidence and tell us who won the draft in the comments. This week on Fright Flick FMK, we're watching and reacting to Wormtown — a sci-fi horror body-horror nightmare about a town taken over by flesh-eating, mind-altering worms. One year into the plague, Ashland, Ohio has stopped acting like a normal town and started acting like a parasite-worshipping nightmare. A cult-like mayor is running the show, the infected are spreading their worm gospel, and three uninfected women are trying to survive through scavenging, extreme hygiene, paranoia, and whatever bad decisions are left on the table. So yes, this sounds disgusting. And yes, that is exactly why we're watching it. Fright Flick FMK is a horror movie watch-along and reaction show for fans who like their scary movies with attitude, laughs, real reactions, and zero fake polish. We kick back, get elevated, pour a drink, press play, and talk through the chaos in real time. For Wormtown, we're digging into the body horror, the parasite madness, the cult-town energy, the survival setup, the gross-out moments, and whether this movie crawls under our skin or just makes us want to shower immediately. At the end, we rate it with The Only Rating System That Matters: Marry It means the movie is a keeper — the kind of horror flick you can grow old with and keep coming back to. F@#k It means it's a good time when the mood hits — maybe not forever material, but definitely worth another late-night visit. Kill It means the movie gave us a good time, we might tell our friends about it, but we are ghosting it in the morning. So pull up a chair, pour whatever you're pouring, light whatever you're lighting, and join the Fright Flick Family. Sip. Smoke. Scream. Rate. Drop your FMK rating for Wormtown in the comments: Are you giving it Marry It, F@#k It, or Kill It? #Wormtown #FrightFlickFMK #HorrorReaction
Hey, it's the 44th episode of Best Issue Ever. This episode's guest is Lodro Rinzler. Like many people I am friend's with, he is a big fan of the X-Men, and has his own podcast - X-Men Horoscopes, which you can find wherever you get podcasts. I guested on an episode and had a ton of fun doing the show. He also wrote a book called You Are Good, You Are Enough which for me was a pretty timely read. Follow his work at his website, lodrorinzler.com. We're chatting about Uncanny X-Men #244, which you might know as the Girls' Night Out issue. This is one of my favorite comics from my favorite era of X-Men and it introduces one of my favorite X-Men, Jubilee! This issue was written by Chris Claremont with art by Marc Silvestri, inks by Dan Green, colors by Glynis Oliver, lettering by Tom Orzechowski, and edited by Bob Harras and Mark Gruenwald. This podcast is recorded in Milwaukee, WI. This episode is edited by Sara Century, but it's usually edited by Kate Warner of the band Church Fire. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi @ ko-fi.com/saracentury. There is now a Discord for this podcast, and here's the slightly cumbersome invite link if you are interested: https://discord.gg/ZwbvqJDAGS Finally, you could support my other ventures, visit my website to sign up for my newsletter for updates. Oh, and I'm a horror writer, so pick up my short story anthology, A Small Light and Other Stories, through Weirdpunk Books, or pretty much wherever else you get books. I wrote a zine about the Scream franchise that you can pick up @ sara-century.square.site.
by Patrick BromleyChicago's biggest and best horror convention returns! One of my favorite weekends of the year is Chicago's annual Flashback Weekend, the horror convention created and run by Mike and Mia Kerz that takes place in Rosemont, Illinois. It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Plus, this year sees the world premiere of a brand new Full Moon movie (relevant to my interests!), in-costume photo opps, Alan Howarth playing the score to Halloween II LIVE along with the film, a tribute to Svengoolie (the greatest horror host of all time), and so much more. One of my favorite things about Flashback -- besides all the cool guests and the chance to spend the weekend surrounded by horror stuff and horror fans -- is that it's a family-run convention and really feels that way. All of the proceeds from the con go into supporting the Midway Drive-In located in Dixon, IL -- the nicest and best drive-in in Illinois -- which they bought in 2007. I love that Flashback is dedicated to preserving the big-screen theatrical experience. From this year's press release:Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror ConventionJuly 31 - Aug. 2, 2026Hyatt Regency O'Hare Chicago, Rosemont, IL 60018 Tickets now on sale at www.flashbackweekend.comFlashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention celebrates its 25th year with a MASSIVE Celebrity guest line-up, amazing evening events, luxurious after-parties, an enormous vendor room, and special Celebrity costume Celeb Photo-Ops.All of this and more, taking place in one of the largest and most beautiful Convention hotels in the World!FLASHBACK WEEKEND 2026 SALUTES;-30 years of SCREAM! This week we are discussing the Gin Blossoms album New Miserable Experience released, August 4, 1992. We're not entirely sure how this soft alternative rock album ended up on the show, but we listened to it for a week straight and now we have thoughts. In this episode we discuss how old our producer and his parents are, Tim's secret off-Broadway show, the importance of tanktops, the art of deception, how to test a fortune teller, the rapid aging of clones, hitting a six foot deer in heels with a car, how to ignore a "Scream" scenario, the benefits of OCD, and so much more! The Lost Boys, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Fright Night, The Village, and The Collector headline this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering July 27 through August 2. Summer horror gets vampiric, supernatural, folklore-soaked, and dangerously familiar as we revisit an iconic 1980s vampire movie, the resurrection of Jason Voorhees, M. Night Shyamalan's isolated village nightmare, a brutal home-invasion trap thriller, and a modern Métis horror novel about a loved one who returns profoundly wrong. Inside this episode:July 28, 2020 — Empire of Wild receives its U.S. publicationCherie Dimaline's supernatural horror novel follows Joan, a woman searching for her missing husband. When she discovers a charismatic preacher who looks and sounds almost exactly like him—but insists he is someone else—her search leads toward Métis folklore, the rogarou, stolen identity, grief, and an ancient hunger wearing a familiar face. July 30, 2004 — The Village releases in the United StatesM. Night Shyamalan transforms an isolated community surrounded by forbidden woods into a haunting story about fear, control, ritual, and the dangerous power of a carefully protected lie. The villagers have been taught that creatures wait beyond the boundary, certain colors must never be worn, and safety depends upon everyone obeying the same rules. July 31, 1987 — The Lost Boys releases in the United StatesJoel Schumacher gives vampire horror leather jackets, motorcycles, beach fog, neon boardwalks, and unforgettable 1980s style. Beneath the lights and nightlife of Santa Carla, a gang of young vampires offers danger, immortality, and the seductive promise of never having to grow up. August 1, 1986 — Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives releasesTommy Jarvis accidentally resurrects Jason Voorhees with a bolt of lightning, transforming the Crystal Lake killer into a fully supernatural slasher icon. Faster, funnier, and more self-aware than many earlier entries, Jason Lives combines gothic cemetery imagery, summer-camp terror, black comedy, and one of the franchise's most memorable versions of Jason.Deep-Cut Spotlight — The Collector A desperate thief breaks into a wealthy family's home and discovers that a masked killer has already transformed the property into an elaborate maze of wires, traps, locked rooms, and carefully arranged suffering. The Collector captures the brutal energy of late-2000s horror, combining home-invasion suspense, post-Saw trap horror, survival-thriller momentum, and the terrifying idea that every possible escape route has already been anticipated by someone waiting inside.Horror Birthdays This Week: David Warner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Wes Craven enter the birthday roll, bringing connections to The Omen, Waxwork, Predator, The Terminator, Aliens, Planet Terror, The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream.Weekly Recommendation — Fright Night A teenage horror fan becomes convinced that his charming new neighbor is a vampire—but nobody believes him. Desperate for help, Charley Brewster turns to Peter Vincent, a washed-up television horror host who has spent his career pretending to battle monsters. Funny, stylish, spooky, and filled with practical-effects vampire horror, Fright Night remains one of the great horror-comedies of the 1980s. It combines the vampire-next-door premise with suburban paranoia, late-night horror television, supernatural action, and the realization that imaginary courage may suddenly need to become real. From Empire of Wild and The Village to The Lost Boys, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, The Collector, and Fright Night, this week in horror history proves that the most dangerous monsters do not always remain hidden. Sometimes they wear the face of someone you love, live inside your community, move into the house next door, or rise from the grave when lightning strikes.
Forget your usual night out, because a bizarre new club is giving people the chance to let out their inner scream. Movie Meltdown - Episode 662 Join us for an epic Merrye family reunion… of sorts. This episode has been years in the making, as we visit a never before heard interview we did with the legendary Sid Haig! We not only get a blast from the past discussion with Sid about working on "Spider Baby", but we also recently sat down with Beverly Washburn to get her memories of the film as well as her take on the legacy this movie has had on her life and fans around the world. Then after the interviews with the stars of the film we settle in for a lengthy discussion on this horror classic and many of the reasons it not only still holds up today - but was also way ahead of its time. And while we bust out our cheap, horror VHS tapes, we also mention… Pasadena Playhouse, horrible bastardized version of the nuclear family, having a passion for something, Zacherley, worldwide fanbase, House of 1000 Corpses, the creepy girl "type", self referential horror, Carnival of Souls, buy your alter ego a top hat, Ozzie and Harriet, you regress more until you just become an animal, Dusty Bluffs, upper class deviants, operating on instinct, unconditional love, Beetlejuice, handled in monster kid fashion, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, these kids today, Pit Stop, independent filmmaking, fighting their demons, going no contact with your family, Scream, the missing link of horror movies, Leave it to Beaver, completely unburdened by psychosis, professional playfulness, Wednesday Addams, cleaning up the sound, psychological warfare at the dinner table, the mummy movies, and it all started at Ralphs grocery. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers as we dig into the entirety of "Spider Baby" - so go watch the movie. "You know, I think I'm learning a lot about life… from Spider Baby."
All Hail Computer Overlord! Our casual adventurers have been tasked by the benevolent Computer Overlord to watch three episodes of Star Trek featuring societies run by computers to make sure Computer Overlord isn't offended. In ‘Return of the Archons', Kirk and the Gang are here for the Festival and for the first time, we get to see Captain Kirk talk a computer to death, then we return YET AGAIN to season One of TNG as Wesley and some of the Enterprise kids get kidnapped by an ancient civilisation led by Deep Throat from The X-Files to be given some new parents in ‘When the Bough Breaks,' and finally Boimler discovers if he's going to be a good boss or a bad boss when he's tasked to lead a repair team ‘In the Cradle of Vexilon.' All Hail Computer Overlord, the cake is a lie! EPISODES DISCUSSED: ‘Return of the Archons' (12:17) ‘When the Bough Breaks' (42:53) ‘In the Cradle of Vexilon' (1:11:58) Talking Points Include: The Princess Bride, the Evercade Superpocket, Jeff Minter, classic computer games, creepy vibes right from the get-go, what is Festival actuallY for? These guys are the crappiest resistance movement, Lindstrom- the hot new Star Trek character find of 1966, Kirk being the most Internet Guy here in talking a computer to death, that one guy wants to use Festival to jump through windows, I think we're going to run out of S1 episodes of TNG before anything else, Kylie Minogue, TNG needed more freeze-frame endings, we hate AI, you might have guessed, we really needed an episode of TNG which was basically Chopping Mall on the Enterprise, the whole ‘families on the Enterprise' thing sometimes just feels weird, Wesley has definitely called Captain Picard ‘dad' by accident, nice to see Jerry Hardin here pre-X-Files, koala, we just have a soft spot for ‘Move Along Home,' have you ever been a Boimler? T'lyn is here to eff with Boimler, would people in the 24th Century haze others? [ Additional Show Notes ] Music by Alfred Etheridge-Nunn. Read Miles's blog or Charlie's blog. This week, The Good, The Bad, and The Sequel heads from the jungle to the scorching streets of Los Angeles for Predator 2—the ambitious sequel that dared to expand the Predator universe instead of simply repeating the original. While it lived in the shadow of Schwarzenegger's classic for years, Predator 2 has grown into one of the franchise's most beloved entries, packed with incredible world-building, memorable action, and some of the best Predator mythology in the series. We dig into everything, including:
Derek has spent years exploring the forests surrounding Estacada, Harriet Lake, Horse Creek, and the Mount Hood region of Oregon. In this episode, he shares the encounters that convinced him something extraordinary lives deep in the Pacific Northwest. From an earth-shaking scream that sent him racing down a logging road to massive footprints, a huge hand impression, a mysterious figure moving along a burned ridgeline, and a tree crashing moments after making calls into the forest, Derek walks through each experience in remarkable detail. Along the way, he discusses local Bigfoot hotspots, stories passed down by fellow outdoorsmen, and why Oregon continues to produce some of the most compelling eyewitness reports in North America. If you're fascinated by serious firsthand Bigfoot encounters, Oregon wilderness mysteries, and Class A eyewitness testimony, this is an episode you won't want to miss.Resources:Oregon Bigfoot Fadez YT channel - https://www.youtube.com/@OregonBigfootFadezDrumming for Bigfoot documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VPdOq7x8uMThe Oregon Bigfoot Highway book - https://www.amazon.com/dp/0692380817

This week on Fright Flick FMK, we're watching and reacting to The Bride! — Maggie Gyllenhaal's Gothic monster-romance reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein story. A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago looking for someone to love. With the help of a scientist, a murdered young woman is brought back to life as the Bride. From there, things spiral into murder, possession, romance, rebellion, and the kind of beautiful monster chaos that feels made for a late-night Fright Flick FMK watch-along. This may not be your usual masked-killer, body-count horror movie, but it is absolutely playing in the horror sandbox: resurrection, obsession, dead bodies, mad science, doomed love, and people making choices that should have come with a warning label. Fright Flick FMK is a horror movie watch-along and reaction show for fans who like their scary movies with attitude, laughs, real reactions, and zero fake polish. We kick back, get elevated, pour a drink, press play, and talk through the chaos in real time. For The Bride!, we're looking at the monster romance, the Gothic style, the performances, the weirdness, the emotional damage, the “is this horror or just deeply unwell romance?” question, and whether this movie earns a spot with the Fright Flick Family. Sip. Smoke. Scream. Rate. Drop your FMK rating for The Bride! in the comments: Are you giving it Marry It, F@#k It, or Kill It?

More than 35 First Nations in Canada have active drinking water advisories, but a new federal bill aims to address the issue. Indigenous leaders are critical of the bill and argue that it limits federal liability and fails to protect clean water as a basic human right. Some Indigenous communities have been without clean water since the 1960s, leading First Nations leaders to demand legislative fixes to industrial pollution and longstanding neglect by the federal government. We'll hear from leaders and experts about what's in the new water bill and the ongoing water crisis in parts of the country. We'll also hear about a new scientific study by Conservation International that examines how Indigenous stewardship and cultural practices improve the ecological health of lands. Researchers looked at the unique practices of more than 40 Indigenous communities around the world and how they’re adapting to a changing climate. Synopsis The late Sam Neill plays John Trent, an insurance investigator tracking down the whereabouts of Sutter Cane a famous horror novelist who has gone missing right before the release of his new novel. Trent suspects that the whole thing is a publicity stunt for the novel's release, but as he searches for Kane, he finds the line between Kane's fictional world and reality start to fray and overlap in disturbing ways. Review John Carpenter goes full Lovecraftian, melding his trademark independent film sensibilities and impressive practical effects with cosmic horror. If you look at his Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB ratings, you will also see that this is his last major film with significant critical and audience praise. It marks the end of an era where scrappy 80s gore and body horror was supplanted by slicker high budget meta narratives. This movie ushered in the new era with the likes of Candyman, The New Nightmare, and Scream. standing between two eras, this definitely has more of an esthetic aligned with the scrappy indy vibe of Romero and Carpenters previous work. The idea takes center stage and isn't handled preciously. It presents itself as a cool thing and lets the audience take a little ride without delving deep into the psychological or taking itself too seriously. Kind of like a Stephen King novel actually. I picked this one because of the passing of Sam Neill and he does a great job here being the everyman descending into, you guessed it, madness. We also get Happy Gilmore's grandma being freaky af, Vigo the Carpathian, and a very young Hayden Christiansen. Like I said before, it's a fun ride that doesn't take itself too seriously. My only criticism is that it does rely on some repetitive cinematic moves such as jump scares and arbitrary time loops. But it's all to service the films uneasy vibe and give impact to the singular moments of cosmic horror. Score 7/10

In this episode of Lunatics Radio Hour, we explore the history of the Final Girl, one of horror's most recognizable character archetypes. From early examples in horror literature and film to the rise of the slasher genre in the 1970s and 1980s, we examine how the trope developed and why it became so important to horror storytelling. We discuss the academic origins of the term, the characteristics traditionally associated with the Final Girl, and how characters like Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson, and Sidney Prescott helped define and evolve the role. We also look at how modern horror films have challenged, expanded, and reinterpreted the trope for new audiences.Join us as we trace the history of the Final Girl and her lasting impact on horror cinema.Follow @Sonrisalibrary on Instagram.SourcesMen, Women, and Chain Saws by Carol J Clover (1992)Fandom article: Halloween Flips The Final Girl Trope on Its Head by Kim Taylor-FosterIn Session Film article by Codie Allen: The Scream Queen's Legacy: Janet Leigh and the Evolution of HorrorDread Central article by Mary Beth McAndrews: Jess's Choice: How ‘Black Christmas' (1974) Responsibly Addresses Abortion and Bodily Autonomy Get Lunatics Merch here. Main Topic New Things You Can Do in a Scenario: Scope and Stakes: If you usually play world-spanning campaigns where the fate of the Earth is at stake, try limiting yourself to one city, one neighborhood, or even one building, like the airship or submarine scenarios. Try playing for small, personal stakes. One person, maybe not even life or death, maybe just their ability to continue living the life they thought they knew. Threat/Antagonists What to do instead of cults? Instead of a big monster? Think antagonist rather than villain Or little monsters that do horrible things when they gang up on you (gnomes, puppets, dolls, cloud of vampiric gnats, etc) Try a scenario where the threat is unconventional – I've done a few where the threat is basically just a spell, that exists, but it draws people in and ruins them Pacing If you usually do long, leisurely multi-session scenarios, try a tight 1 or 2 hour event that starts fast and doesn't let up. You can check out No Time to Scream as a place to start. Structure and Clue Trail Shoutout to Heinrich – start the scenario *after* the bad thing has already happened Emphasize or de-emphasize the clue trail In a short scenario, try fewer “Acts” Try improv – Players can do this too, leave your background blank and fill it in as you go, or roll randomly and make it fit the emerging story Tone Pulse-pounding vs. cerebral, quiet and sad, loud and shooty, comic, uncomfortable Singing! An opera/sung-through-musical Setting: Try a new time in a familiar place, or a new place in a familiar time Give your brain lots of new things to explore Try Pulp in any setting For Players Play a totally different kind of investigator: brainy vs. brawny, different social background, different approach to solving problems See what happens if you don't optimize for the traditional Cthulhu skills; Keepers, are you willing to reward a player who puts points in Climb, Swim, Throw, and Track?
