The seven deadly sins, you know the list: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. They aren't so much biblical as they are patriarchal, holding women to impossible standards in order to be considered "good" says Elise Loehnen. The constant pressure to 'be good" has very bad consequences for women. Loehnen is a writer, host of the podcast Pulling the Thread and spent seven years immersed in the wellness industry as the chief content officer at Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop company. She shares her own experience, balancing the light and dark sides of life and prioritizing wholeness over wellness in her book, Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good.

Great racing in Rochester for the 3rd and 4th round of the USCX series! Noah and Issam discuss the racing of both days. They talk about THAT move by Andrew Strohmeyer on the stairs, and how that helped silent assassin Vincent Baestaens take the win. The mistakes by White, lacking legs of Rouiller & strong weekend of Van den Ham are also discussed. There was also plenty of talking to do about the womens races ,where Rochette won but not without a fight. Canada was on top as Holmgren & McGill both impressed. Weaving the Yoga Sutra: First fundamental need How do you express your uniqueness? Is authenticity affiliating with a particular set of beliefs? Have you consciously participated in the creation of those beliefs? What do you do when you discover that one of those beliefs no longer fits your experiences? When Dr. Abraham Verghese released his debut novel in 2009 it was an literary marvel. “Cutting for Stone” captivated readers, sold more than 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for two years. Readers had to wait 14 years for another book by Verghese, but by all accounts, his new novel was worth the wait. Oprah Winfrey named it a book club pick, called saying it was “one of the best books I've read in my entire life — and I've been reading since I was three!” Talking Volumes with Abraham Verghese, ‘The Covenant of Water' It was a pleasure to have him kick off the 2023 season of Talking Volumes. Dr. Verghese joined host Kerri Miller on stage at the Fitzgerald Theater the evening of Sept. 14 and talked about redemption, inspiration, how his “day job” as a doctor informs his writing (and vice versa) and why his belief in the essential goodness of humanity is core to his novels. Their conversation was complimented by Kerala folk music played by local musician Nirmala Rajasekar, who was joined onstage by one of India's premier percussionists, Thanjavur Murugaboopathi.Guest: Dr. Abraham Verghese is a physician and professor at the School of Medicine at Stanford University. “But it's also okay not to get it right. You know, people mistakenly think that they want perfection, say you're playing golf and you wish you could get a hole in one every time you swung the golf club. Well, no. There'd be no game there. You know, that if you want to do something where you're always winning, play tic tac toe against a five year old, four year old. So on some level we know we don't want that. And the problem is that much of school teaches us these absolute answers. We're graded. Most tests are designed to find out what you don't know rather than what you do know, which I think is a big mistake. So, we end up with a world where we think there are winners and losers.” If you've heard about a fascinating study that explores the power of the mind over the body, most likely it emerged out of the lab of Harvard Professor Ellen Langer—in fact, in 1981, Langer became the first woman ever to be tenured in psychology at Harvard. There, she studies the illusion of control, decision-making, aging, and mindfulness theory. She's responsible for the Counterclockwise study, published in 2009, where aging men recovered their youth, and Alia Crum's famous study on chambermaids and their understanding of their own health and wellness, got its start with Langer as well. She has a fascinating mind, in part because she is always, always willing to question our underlying assumptions about where we have control and where we don't. Now here's an important caveat: Ellen Langer is the mother of modern mindfulness—but she is not talking about meditation. No disrespect to meditators, but Langer is focused instead on attention and the power of thought on the physical body, not so much on controlling or emptying the mind. She is a force, and I was so honored to invite her onto Pulling the Thread. Let's get to our conversation. Finally, the trio concludes by discussing Naomi Klein's new book, Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World, which captures the strange ways selfhood is performed in the internet age. Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor, and podcast host of Pulling the Thread. Ultimately, Elise is a seeker and synthesizer, braiding together wisdom traditions, cultural history, and a deep knowledge of healing modalities to unlock new ways to contextualize who we are and why we're here. She's also the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. The book explores the ways patriarchy embeds itself in our consciousness. The Seven Deadly Sins—Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Anger—reads like a checklist of what it means to be a "good" woman and offers a path forward, moving ourselves and each other toward freedom and balance. Elise is a frequent contributor to Oprah and has written for The New York Times, Elle Decor, Stylist, and more. She has co-written 12 books, including five New York Times Best Sellers. Previously, she was the chief content officer of goop, and co-hosted The goop Podcast and The goop Lab on Netflix. Before goop, Elise was the editorial projects director of Condé Nast Traveler. Before Traveler, she was the editor at large and ultimately deputy editor of Lucky Magazine, appearing regularly on Today, E!, Good Morning America, and The Early Show. She has a B.A. from Yale. In this episode, Nada sits down with Elise to learn what prompted her to write On Our Best Behavior and to unpack how women have contorted themselves to find a place in history. Elise shares anecdotes about how modesty was prioritized and impacted her life. She discusses the importance of women showing up together and gives us context for why collectivism is essential. This cultural therapist (recently coined at a conference and an appropriate title for Elise) is at once a researcher, teacher, student, and friend. Her ability to clearly articulate our cultural condition gives wings to our unnamed inklings and fragmented thoughts. Elise is currently reading The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels, Morality by Jonathon Sack, and Integral Psychology by Ken Wilber. You can find additional recommendations at Bookshop, or Goodreads. Steph interviews Elise Loehnen, the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior and host of Pulling the Thread, a podcast focused on pulling apart the stories we tell about who we are—and then putting those threads back together. Steph and Elise discuss the ways patriarchy impacts how women see themselves and what they police in each other. They discuss how the seven deadly sins impacts moms. Elise shares how the fear of sloth, gluttony, and envy leads to burnout, lack of confidence, feeling guilty about rest, and our relationship with our bodies before, during, and after pregnancy. We begin to dismantle these negative beliefs and thought patterns to help moms feel more freedom and joy in motherhood. Topics Discussed: Ways we subconsciously hide parts of ourselves. How to lean into using your voice and saying what you mean. Ways social media impacts motherhood. How to break free of the belief that you're not doing enough. Navigating postpartum body image and envy. She is the host of Pulling the Thread, a podcast focused on pulling apart the stories we tell about who we are—and then putting those threads back together. She's also the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good (Dial Press/PRH). The book weaves together history, memoir, and cultural criticism to explore the ways patriarchy lands in the bodies of women and embeds itself in our consciousness—and what we then police in ourselves and in each other. Regardless of our religious provenance, the self-denial implicit in each of the Seven Deadly Sins—Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Anger—reads like a checklist of what it means to be a “good” woman. With awareness, we can begin to recognize these patterns of self-restriction, break the story, and move ourselves and each other toward freedom and balance. Locked On Chargers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have started their season in disastrous fashion and at 0-2, all eyes are on head coach Brandon Staley who's seat has become incredibly hot. Los Angeles had chances to win the game on both sides of the ball but Justin Herbert and the Chargers defense failed to execute late in the game. Dan and David break down the last painstaking game including the inability to finish and what went wrong for the Chargers in the fourth quarter and overtime. They also discuss how the defense made some improvements this week but still made life entirely too easy on Ryan Tannehill and giving up explosive game-changing plays. The one bright side of this game for the Chargers is they may have hit big on second-round pick Tuli Tuipulotu. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Weaving the Yoga Sutra: Two needs and one goal What are your fundamental needs? and What is your life's goal? Each one of us is unique. And our first fundamental need is to feel that uniqueness and to express it. Our second fundamental need: We need to connect with other people in a meaningful way. The most important goal is to be present by embodying awareness wherever we are. Jill Wine-Banks hosts #SistersInLaw to review the most consequential developments in the trials of Trump World, including; Mark Meadows' failure to remove the case to federal court, the lack of a Garcia Hearing in the Mar-A-Lago case, and the separation of the defendants in Georgia. Then they look at the history of DACA beginning with the proposed Dream Act, and the implications of a ruling against it by a judge in Texas– especially what it means for immigrants brought here as children. They also examine the indictment of Hunter Biden on gun charges, how politics scuttled the plea deal, and what it means for him and President BIden. Carol Dunbar didn't set out to be an writer. For more than a decade, she was an actress based in the Twin Cities. She told stories by embodying them. But then she and her husband — also an actor — decided to leave it all behind. They moved off the grid, to rural Wisconsin, so her husband could handcraft furniture. It was there, while learning to split wood and pump water and raise two toddlers in the midst of the chaos, that Dunbar came to the stunning conclusion that she was a storyteller — just one who had been working in the wrong art form. So she began to write. Her first book, “The Net Beneath Us” won the Edna Ferber Fiction Book Award and told the story of a young woman learning to live close off the land in Wisconsin after her husband has a logging accident. Her new novel, “A Winter's Rime,” is also set in northern Wisconsin and plays with truths Dunbar has learned firsthand about PTSD, healing and place. This week's Big Book and Bold Ideas features a conversation between host Kerri Miller and Dunbar. They talk about how the rural north woods influence Dunbar's writing, how both her books are informed by her own story and why learning to forgive one's self might be the key to redemption.Guest:Carol Dunbar is a novelist who lives off the grid in northern Wisconsin and writes from a solar-powered office on the second floor of a water tower. Her latest book is “A Winter's Rime.”Subscribe to the MPR News with Kerri Miller podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.

Jason Fitger is not a likeable character. A creative writing professor at the fictitious Payne University, an aptly named small liberal arts college in the Midwest, Fitger is cantankerous and acid-tongued, beleaguered and inappropriate. He doesn't really like students — and he doesn't like England, which is where he has been pressured into leading a study abroad program. The students on the tour are equally hapless. For the most part, this is their first trip away from home. One believes they are actually going to the Caribbean. And another remarks that she has never left her cat. Someone writes in his application that he is “a business major … for obvious reasons. There are no jobs out there for people who just want to read.” It's enough to push Professor Fitger to the brink — and that is the story told in “The English Experience,” Minnesota novelist Julie Schumacher's final book in the trilogy that follows Fitger's academic misadventures. This week, on Big Books and Bold Ideas, Schumacher joined host Kerri Miller in the studio for a rollicking and candid conversation about how Schumacher channels Fitger, why she hopes he's likeable in spite of all his faults, and the frustrations she shares with him about the future of academia. Guest:Julie Schumacher lives in St. Paul and is a faculty member in the Creative Writing Program and the Department of English at the University of Minnesota. “The English Experience” is the completion of her trilogy about Professor Fitger. In the summer of 2009, 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson was living in Los Angeles, California. She had recently graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in psychology and was searching for the perfect doctorate program to continue her studies and pursue her dream of becoming a psychologist. On the night of September 16, she went to a restaurant in Malibu, where she began exhibiting some strange behavior. While some people thought maybe Mitrice was drunk or on some type of drug it became apparent that she was actually struggling with her mental health. Mitrice didn't pay her bill, but the workers weren't really concerned about that. They even discussed pulling their money together to help her. They were more concerned that she was obviously going through some type of crisis. So, they called the police, who then made the call that she did not need to be evaluated by a mental health professional. She was instead arrested and taken to jail. Her car was impounded, along with her cell phone and wallet. A few hours later, at 12:38 a.m., Mitrice was released without any of her belongings, no money, no phone, and no car. Almost a year later, in August 2010, Mitrice's remains were located. Since then, the cause of her death has become a major topic of debate for her loved ones, the city, and across true crime. Almost immediately, investigators said no foul play was involved in Mitrice's death. But her loved ones and even certain members of law enforcement have voiced their concerns that the evidence suggests otherwise. Mitrice's mentor, Dr. Ronda Hampton, joins us this week to discuss the case in a very candid interview. Anyone with information is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at (213) 486-6900.
