Support is mounting for farmers dealing with the devastation of floods, drought and other hardships, ahead of Christmas. Aussie Helpers is asking people to donate $50 for a farmer and assist in the years-long recovery ahead for many landholders. Neil Baker's property in far north New South Wales was inundated by water during floods. Rural editor Sophie Clarke caught up with the fourth generation farmer to hear his story and how the support his family has received has helped so far. Having survived his own battle with depression after losing the farm, Brian Egan took the advice to “help someone worse off than himself” to heart in a big way. His charity Aussie Helpers provides both practical assistance to farmers battling drought and mental health guidance where it is desperately needed.Kendi Burness-Cowan speaks with Brian about the Virtual Psychologist, a mental health program aimed at giving accessible mental health support to farmers in regional Australia. Mental health training and support is also provided to all Aussie Helper volunteers who visit the farmers. Where relevant, the local community-based services are linked in to provide ongoing care.
Like many other women in the bush, Tess Pemble wears many hats. Grazier, teacher, swim instructor, member of the community and voice of the outback. In this episode Sink or Swim I talk with Tess Pemble from Allan Hills Station and discuss the reality of living in drought and her work in providing swimming lessons in the bush when water is, an issue itself. St George TAFE Health Expo 2009 raised funds for Aussie Helpers. Pat, Bee, Yun & other students interview Sue Martin, an Aussie HelpersAussie helper volunteer. Listen to the interview. It's really interesting and an eye opener about one aspect of Australia that many people don't know. What is Aussie Helpers? Who are the people working there? Who do they help? Why do those people need help? What is the Australian bush? What is the grapevine? Write a post in your blog about Aussie Helpers. What do you think? Tell us about it. Let's talk! music by traxsmiths
Our class and other AMEP classes helped at the Health Expo 2009 fundraising for Aussie Helpers. We cooked traditional dishes, served the food and also sold raffle tickets and welcomed people to the Expo while handing them Expo bags. Watch this space for podcasts we recorded interviewing several stall holders. Health Expo 2009 Episode 78 Let's talk!
