This week on the podcast, Hame is joined by broadcaster, author, mum, podcaster, and all-round Aussie icon — Yumi Stynes. Now nine years sober, Yumi shares the full arc of her relationship with alcohol: from growing up in Swan Hill and nervously sipping booze as a teen, to navigating grief after the loss of her dad, and working in the booze-fuelled world of music television during her time at Channel V.We also touch on post-natal depression, shame as an unexpected motivator, the myth of “cool”, and some frankly hilarious (and horrifying) stories from the wild days of drinking. Oh, and yes, that kiss with Robbie Williams that changed the course of her life and career!Yumi's honesty and insight shine throughout this conversation, and she reminds us that the best drugs of all are free, legal, and available daily, and no, we're not talking about pills, powders or pints. Her decades-long career in the public eye has grown and evolved alongside her sobriety, and she credits her current creative energy to leaving alcohol behind.Yumi is a dream guest, raw, wise, funny, and we hope you get as much from this episode as we did.

Join me on the second segment of my ecotourism trip to Tasmania, Australia (my unscientific, amateur, American, vegan, wombat-obsessed perspective) with all my own audio recordings from my June 2025 trip. This 58-minute (part 2) segment of the trip takes you along with me to my favorite part -- Maria Island National Park and its wombats, kangaroos and wallabies, stingrays, and ruby red anemones, and the culling issue of marsupial "overpopulation" -- through to Port Arthur Historic Convict Site, then on to the city of Hobart, with insights from my Conference on Communication and Environment #COCE2025 (at Univ of Tasmania), including compelling audio clips from Tassie Green Party pioneers who spoke to us -- Bob Brown and Christine Milne. As retired Members of Parliament, and forest/river and gender activists, Christine and Bob have refreshingly candid political advice for activists that also gives listeners insights into current Australian politics. Plus you get to hear their cool Aussie accents (much better than my one attempt early on to do an Aussie accent). "Bad Weather" pronounced "Beed Weeth-uh." (side note: I loved the cool weather there in their winter and the sunny days on the coast). If you like my ecotourist ramblings and low-tech audio, make sure you've listened to Tassie podcast part 1 in the previous podcast posting. And see photos and videos from my trip at https://www.facebook.com/InTunetoNature  Idea: You can do a drinking game every time I talk about wombat poop, the ferry, and how adorable any marsupial is. Note: All the animal audio and photos here are of free-living/wild animals (no one was captive in a zoo or sanctuary), which did limit the number of other animal species I interacted with (no Tasmanian Devils or platypuses this time), but I felt it was a more natural and respectful way to interact (it was the animal individual's choice to get near me or allow me nearer to them). And I had an amazing time, and was elated for every wild animal I saw (like fairy wrens or swamp hens at outdoor bistro tables eating my chia pudding cup). As part of me compensating for the greenhouse gas emitted from my international trip, I made some donations to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Friends of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. While the Age of Ozploitation is over, that doesn't mean Aussie filmmakers can't birth a new movement, and hopefully Monster Pictures Studios is going to do just that.First films off the ranks includes the action-thriller Seven Snipers, directed by Sandra Sciberras, featuring Radha Mitchell, Tim Roth, Ioan Gruffudd, and Ryan Kwanten. Richard Clapton: Stories Behind Australia's Summer Soundtrack

    A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2025 52:00

When you talk about iconic Australian singer-songwriters, it doesn't take long before Richard Clapton's name comes up. For over five decades, Richard has been one of Australia's true rock poets — the kind of artist whose songs become part of people's lives, the soundtrack to long road trips, beach holidays, and nostalgic nights on the back deck with a cold beer in hand.Born on Sydney's north shore, Richard grew up like a lot of kids — dreaming of music that took him beyond suburbia. In the late 60s and early 70s, Richard packed up and headed for Europe, guitar slung over his shoulder, busking in the streets and absorbing the counterculture that was blooming across the continent. When he returned, Richard brought with him a suitcase full of songs and stories that reflected not just his travels but the changing face of Australia itself. In '73, he released his debut single Last Train to Marseilles. But it was his '75 album Girls on the Avenue that really made people sit up and listen. The title track turned Richard Clapton into a household name almost overnight.Through the mid-to-late '70s, Richard released a string of albums that are now regarded as cornerstones of classic Australian rock music. Richard carved out a loyal audience that followed him from smoky inner-city pubs to big festival stages. His songs were — and still are — snapshots of the Australian psyche: romantic but real, hopeful but tinged with a knowing sadness. But Richard didn't just write for himself. He became a sort of elder statesman for the Aussie rock scene, helping to mentor up-and-coming acts that would soon become legends themselves. Bands like INXS, Cold Chisel, and Mental As Anything all found a kindred spirit in Richard, whose lyrics and attitude proved you could write songs about Australian life that were poetic, gritty, and universal all at once. He even produced INXS's second album, helping shape the band's early sound before they broke big internationally. If you've ever seen Richard Clapton live, you'll know that he's the real deal. His voice — warm, slightly weathered, and instantly recognisable — carries the weight of decades on the road and in the studio. He has that easy rapport with an audience that only comes from years of standing on a stage, guitar in hand, telling stories through song. For many Australians, his gigs are like a reunion with an old friend — everyone singing along to Girls on the Avenue or swaying to Deep Water as if no time has passed at all. What makes Clapton's story so compelling is that he never really chased fame for fame's sake. He's always seemed more interested in writing the next great song than chasing trends. And yet, he's ended up as one of the true pillars of Australian rock, a fact recognised when he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1999.Today, well into his seventies, Richard Clapton is still out there doing what he loves most — writing songs, recording new music, and hitting the road to play to crowds who still know every word. In recent years, he's released new albums like Harlequin Nights and Music Is Love (1966–1970), a tribute to the songs and artists that shaped him, from Bob Dylan to Neil Young. His autobiography, The Best Years of Our Lives, published in 2015, pulls back the curtain on decades of wild gigs, unforgettable characters, and the hard-won wisdom that comes from surviving the ups and downs of the music industry. And yet, for all the tours, albums, and accolades, it's the songs that matter most. Ask any fan what Richard Clapton means to them, and you'll likely hear a story about summer days driving up the coast or seeing him live for the first time.In an industry that's constantly changing, Richard Clapton stands as a reminder that great music is timeless. Singer-songwriter, rock poet, mentor, and living legend Richard Clapton joins us here to share his stoires. Check the website for gigs near you.

Grant Hardie is the co-founder of Monster Pictures, one of Australia and New Zealand's leading distributors of horror and genre films. In 2011, Monster Pictures birthed the darkly delightful Monster Fest, which has quickly become Australia's flagship horror and genre film festival. Now, in 2025, Monster Pictures, in partnership with Head Gear Films and White Hot Productions, have morphed into their next stage of evolution, launching Monster Pictures Studios, a full-service genre film studio which aims to work with Aussie creatives to bring genre films to life with the intention of becoming a defining force of Australian genre cinema. There's a giddy level of delight when you read a press release like this one, as if we're honouring the scrappy genre-roots of Aussie cinema, splashing back to the era of Ozploitation where anything was possible. The next wave includes films from horror legends Greg McLean & Sean Byrne, while Matt Day will be making his feature directorial debut.I caught up with Grant Hardie to talk about Monsters Pictures ability to engage with audiences, filmmakers, and to shape how horror and genre films are embraced in Australia. To find out more, visit MonsterPicturesStudios.com.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. Who is Mark Opitz? Let's just say this… without Mark Opitz, the sound of INXS – and a good chunk of Australian rock royalty – wouldn't be what it is today. Mark Opitz is more than a record producer. He's a sonic architect, a studio visionary, and the man behind the glass during some of the most defining moments in Aussie music history.  INXS – Yes, he helped shape their sound during that vital early international breakthrough with “Shabooh Shoobah”, and a few years later, he came back to help steer the band through two bold and creative studio albums: “Welcome to Wherever You Are” and “Full Moon, Dirty Hearts.” Albums that pushed boundaries, reinvented the band's sound, and cemented their status as artists—not just hitmakers. But the Mark Opitz story doesn't stop at INXS. Not even close. He's worked with AC/DC, Cold Chisel, The Angels, Divinyls, Noiseworks, Hoodoo Gurus, Models, and Jimmy Barnes—and that's just scratching the surface.  His shelves are stacked with ARIA Awards, platinum records, and accolades from every corner of the industry. He's produced and engineered for acts like Kiss, Bob Dylan, and even The Rolling Stones during their Australian tour prep. Mark's career spans decades and genres, always with a trademark focus on the craft of making records that last. And here's the part we're proudest of…  Mark is a patron and proud supporter of the INXS: Access All Areas Podcast. He believes in what we do, and he generously shared his time, stories, and wisdom with us across two incredible episodes.  Episodes 222 & 223 In this powerful 2-part series, Mark takes us inside the studio, unpacks how his mind works, and gives us a front-row seat to the alchemy of recording. You'll hear about:  Working with a young Michael Hutchence  Finding that perfect guitar tone  Why studio psychology is just as important as the gear  What it takes to bring the best out of a band So… Who is Mark Opitz? He's the producer behind your favourite tracks, the unsung hero of the Aussie rock explosion, and a man with a million stories told with heart, humour, and honesty.   Listen now to Episodes 222 & 223 of the INXS: Access All Areas Podcast and celebrate the genius of this legendary man.
