What a Creep (Replay!) Season 20, Episode 7George Washington and the Tale of Ona JudgeGeorge Washington is the “Father of Our Country” and one of American history's most revered Founding Fathers. We heard tales of how brave he was and that he could not tell a lie. He also famously refused to create a fiefdom with the office of President, which means we are not stuck with someone in office unless they are duly elected. Like many white people of his time, he enslaved people. This is a fact, and though not unusual in his peer group--it's not a great look for a person who is enshrined all across the United States. People want to downplay his racism and evil acts.Listening to Bill Maher and Elon Musk minimize his actions made us realize we need to dive into one of the first President's most heinous acts by talking about badass Ona Judge. An enslaved woman who escaped from the President's home and remained free despite his relentless pursuit of her. This woman is an American hero whom everyone who truly believes in liberty and freedom needs to learn about and memorialize her contribution to history. For nearly 30 years, Randy Newman has been the musical voice behind Pixar's most beloved films—Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Cars, and more—earning multiple awards and generations of fans. But beyond these nostalgic soundtracks lies a body of work that's often overlooked. Newman's solo career is a masterclass in sharp, literate satire, tackling America's deepest flaws with a deceptively laid-back style. From Sail Away to I Love L.A., his songs blend humor with biting social commentary. In this Rock N Roll Archaeology Short, we explore Newman's 1970s-era music and the new biography A Few Words in Defense of Our Country by legendary rock critic Robert Hilburn. The WildStory: A Podcast of Poetry and Plantsby the Native Plant Society of New JerseyHosted byAnn E. Wallace, PhDPoet Laureate Emeritus of Jersey CityCo-hostKim Correro,Rutgers Master Gardener and Director of State ProgramsSpecial ContributorDr. Randi EckelEntomologist and Vice President of Membership NPSNJDo you have a question about native plants for Randi?Email: TheWildStory@npsnj.orgThe WildStory presents a special episode this month in celebration of Black History. We have three amazing guests, who share the stories of Black Americans who wrote poetry, created gardens, advanced the field of horticulture, and inspired others—and who are each doing important work themselves today. An unexpected throughline in these conversations is the influence of W.E.B. DuBois, the Black leader, visionary and author of the 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk, which inspired generations of Black Americans toward self-realization and liberty through education, the arts and culture, and more. The first guest is Shaun Spencer-Hester (0:04:43), granddaughter of the poet, gardener, and community leader Anne Spencer. Anne Spencer's home and garden in Lynchburg, Virginia was a gathering place for Black intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance, offering a garden refuge and retreat at a time when many Black Americans had migrated north to urban centers for new opportunities. Shaun shares family stories about her grandmother's life, garden, and poetry, and brings us inside theAnne Spencer House and Garden Museum, where she is the Executive Director and Curator. In lieu of our usual Ask Randi segment, this month, Kim and Ann take the mic and dive into the exciting opportunities on the horizon for NPSNJ members (0:41:10)! Mark your calendars for the highly anticipatedSpring Annual Meeting and Conference on March 1st, where we're proud to welcome the esteemed keynote speaker Doug Tallamy. NPSNJ is rolling outsix brand new classes that explore a range of captivating topics, and is thrilled to introduce a Spanish language version of the helpful brochure, "Going Native: A Guide to Landscaping with Native Plants in Northern New Jersey.” Don't miss these incredible chances to elevate your knowledge and skills! In the second interview, Jerri Mitchell-Lee of Newark, NJ speaks with us about her remarkable great-aunt,Effie Lee Newsome (0:50:33) a prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Newsome was the editor of the children's column "Little Page" in W.E.B. Du Bois's influential publication, The Crisis, where she showcased several of her own children's poems. An avid lover of the outdoors, Effie Lee Newsome possessed an extraordinary talent for connecting people—especially children—with the wonders of nature. Whether she was marveling at a spider, a goldfinch, a snowflake, or a violet, she made the natural world come alive. In 1940, she published Gladiola Garden: Poems of Outdoors and Indoors, which was reprinted in 2020, making her work accessible to a brand new audience. In the final segment, horticulturalistAbra Lee (1:10:01) tells us about her highly anticipated book, Conquer The Soil: Black America and the Untold Stories of Our Country's Gardeners, Farmers, and Growers (Timber Press, 2026). This remarkable work is set to inspire readers and shed light on the profound history and culture of Black growers across our nation. Abra serves as the Director of Horticulture at the historicOakland Cemetery in Atlanta, GA. During our conversation, we delve into Abra's impressive career path and explore the influential figures in her life, particularly her parents, who encouraged her curiosity and ambition.Thank you for joining us on The WildStory. Randy Newman is one of the most misunderstood and under-celebrated musicians of the modern era. Reknowned Music Journalist/Author Robert Hilburn's new book, A Few Words in Defense of Our Country is the definitive Randy Newman biography and Bob joins us to spotlight the genius and the legend of a great American musician and storyteller.Robert Hilburn was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times for 35 years and he's written books about John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. Bob tells us that Newman (much like Simon) had to be convinced to have his legacy chronicled. Randy grew up in a legendary musical family in which tooting your horn (metaphorically) was frowned upon. His uncles composed movie scores and they taught Randy to let the work be your voice. We hear about Randy's challenging childhood, the pressure he felt to succeed in music and how success, once achieved, incurred his father's envy. Throughout his career, Randy's best childhood friend, Lenny Waronker (who became a record exec) believed in him, opened doors and cheered his efforts.Diving further into Randy's work flow, creative struggles and anxiety-taming efforts, Bob illuminates Randy's genre-bending and cultural interrogating musical achievements. We also delve, with Bob, into the influence once held by music critics in the golden ages of both print media and the music industry. We discuss the futures of recorded music and journalism and Bob tells us about his favorite interview ever… with Bob Dylan… and that one time he went to Folsom Prison with Johnny Cash.Plus, Weezy recommends the original Apple TV+ movie, Blitz and Fritz is currently into the new series Rivals, streaming on Hulu and other platforms.Path Points of Interest:Robert HilburnRobert Hilburn on WikipediaA Few Words In Defense of Our Country: The Biography of Randy Newman by Robert HilburnRobert Hilburn Amazon Author PageRobert Hilburn on XAmanda PetrusichBlitz on Apple TVRivals - On Several Platforms
Hey Smarties! We're on a break for the holidays and revisiting some of our top episodes from 2024. We can't do this show without you and we still need your support. If you can, donate today to keep independent journalism going strong into 2025 and beyond. Give now to support “Make Me Smart.” Thank you so much for your generosity, happy holidays and we'll see you in the new year. If you’ve been feeling hopeless about the news, the election, the economy, the climate crisis and everything else that’s going on, today’s episode is for you. Emily Amick, lawyer and co-author of “Democracy in Retrograde: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives,” argues we can all become better participants in our democracy. And we don’t need to have a gazillion dollars to do it. On the show today, Amick explains why we should treat civic engagement as self-care, how to find your civic personality and ways to cultivate a news diet that doesn’t put you in a doom loop. Plus, the moment she realized our democracy was headed in the wrong direction. Then, we’ll get into how voters in Utah fought to protect the power of citizen-led ballot initiatives and why shoppers hide purchases from their romantic partners. Plus, an anime cosplayer was wrong about what it would take to create her own costume. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Despite Recent Setbacks, There Is Still Hope For Democracy” from Forbes “In ‘Democracy in Retrograde,’ Emily Amick Talks About Political Engagement and Her Cancer Diagnosis” from Teen Vogue “What does Utah's redistricting ruling do to voters' ability to change laws?” from The Salt Lake Tribune “Utah Supreme Court: Lawmakers must heed voter-passed gerrymandering reforms “ from Axios Salt Lake City “Amazon’s Prime Day a ‘major’ cause of worker injuries, Senate probe finds” from CNBC “US Retail Sales Excluding Autos Rise by Most in Three Months” from Bloomberg “Gym Bags, Trunks, Back Doors: How Stealth Shoppers Hide Purchases” from The Wall Street Journal “Financial Infidelity Report 2023: Why People Hide Purchases From Partners” from Circuit “Inside a UPS warehouse that prioritizes super-fast shipping” from Marketplace How are you getting involved in civic life?
