What do you get when you put me, Annie F. Downs, Tammy Trent, and Shaun Groves together at a bistro table in Texas? You get the craziest, most fun, deep, and inspiring conversation ever! These crazy friends joined me in Fort Worth for a Fresh Grounded Faith event, and at the very end, we got to be both silly and serious as we answered questions from the audience. We talked about how to deal with loneliness, how to let go of hurts and disappointments, and how to find fulfillment in the monotony of everyday life. Then Shaun geeked out about the Hebrew understanding of a story in the New Testament, and Annie gave us the scoop on her favorite gospel. Oh, and you don't want to miss Tammy spilling the beans about dating a younger guy. Seriously, it was hilarious! This was one of the most fun, funniest, and life-giving Spill the Beans, so pull up a chair at the bistro. SHOW NOTES: 413Podcast.com/267

"I'm an interrupter. I'm bringing a message the people attending didn't intend to hear." Shaun Groves is a speaker -- and a unique speaker. His path to speaking life began as a singer/ songwriter in Nashville. Shaun had a career in the music industry. He wrote and performed music on stages across the country and was an award-winning, chart-topping musician until 15 years ago when he flipped the switch on his career. He went from singer/ songwriter to speaker. But what didn't change -- Shaun is a master communicator whether he's speaking from a stage or playing music. When Shaun moved from music to speaking his primary goal as a speaker was to get children sponsored. And 15 years later, he is the master storyteller of Compassion International -- now, he would never say that, but I can. Shaun shared what he has learned through the years as he's moved from a passionate speaker to a persuasive speaker. "I wanted people to care about something immediately." Shaun worked to understand his audience and to grow as a storyteller. He studied the craft of storytelling. Shaun shared some of the basics of storytelling -- "people remember the beginning and the end. You can move the story around to make it more impactful -- you can start in the middle. you can start at the end." He suggests that you write your story out on cards and then move the cards around to determine what works the best for your message. "Listen to great storytellers." Shaun shared his favorite storytelling podcasts Radiolab This American LifeRevisionist HistoryYou'll find more about Shaun at his website and on his social channels. Shaun's WebsiteInstagram

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! I had the chance to catch up with Christian music artist Cheri Keaggy at NRB 2016 in Nashville. In the interview she gives us an update on the fan response to her recent album No Longer My Own. About The Album:No Longer My Own seeks to embolden fellow sojourners of the faith to live more fearlessly for Christ. Perhaps that sentiment is best expressed in the album's title cut, a song inspired by the "Covenant Prayer" popularized by John Wesley. Listeners can look forward to such vertically oriented songs of celebration as "Lucky To Be Breathing Your Air," prayerful petitions like "Jesus, One and Only," poignant ballads like "You Go Before," and the powerful anthem, "Overcome," a response to recent news reports of believers facing persecution, even unto death, and the increase of moral decay in our nation. She also enlists her uncle, Grammy nominee and Dove Award winner Phil Keaggy, who contributes a jubilant ukulele track in the lighthearted Scripture song, "Whatever is True (Phil. 4:8)." Keaggy employed the innovative Kickstarter crowd-source business model to fund the project, joining such high profile Christian recording artists as Carman, Shaun Groves, John Schlitt, Five Iron Frenzy and Thousand Foot Krutch, who also used the outside-the-box service to fund recent projects. Keaggy is no stranger to the business model, having successfully employed Kickstarter to raise nearly $25,000 to fund her 2012 release, So I Can Tell. While Keaggy admits to being both humbled and excited by the number of doors that opened for ministry through concerts, church services, women's events, TV appearances, interviews, and radio airplay as a direct result of So I Can Tell, she insists the story is far from over. With a quiver full of new songs burning in her soul, Keaggy prays No Longer My Own will inspire and embolden fellow saints to live more fearlessly for Christ. About The Artist: Cheri Keaggy began her career as a worship leader at a small church in Southern California before recording her debut album on Sparrow Records, Child of the Father, in 1994. Honored with a Dove Award nomination for New Artist of the Year, Keaggy has gone on to record eight additional albums, resulting in nine No. 1 songs, three Dove Award nominations and a Dove Award win. After more than two decades in music, her ministry has expanded to include speaking engagements as well. For additional show notes, visit ShaunTabatt.com/060.
We do a rather quick and broad flyover of the development of money, its causes and effects, and examine economic systems and what they mean for the follower of Christ. All this is to establish context for the next two episodes, where we discuss mammon and the damage of the pursuit of money. Money itself is deceptive Who invented money? Who invented economic systems? Bartering is great! – dealing with actual things with inherent value, while money is a promise of value. The promise of the value is dependent on a societal structure that values the money. So what's the big deal with money, anyway? Money makes business easy – bartered goods require effort and care Bartered goods require caring for the earth Bartered goods are created by God. Cash is made by man, and influences people to find things to exchange for money. Money facilitates a migration away from stewarding the earth, and facilitates greed. Modern culture promotes frivolity “Postponing the crisis” is an epidemic aspect of modern American culture Songs: “Entitlement” by Beautiful Eulogy, from their album “Sattelite Kite”. It is available at www.humblebeast.com Other music: “Enough” and “No Better” by Shaun Groves, used by permission of Shaun Groves. http://shaungroves.com/ This episode was originally broadcast live on May 8, 2015 on KXEN 1010AM in St. Louis, MO For more info: www.sunministries.org Theme music: “The Resistance” by Josh Garrels (www.joshgarrels.com) licensed by Marmoset Music (www.marmosetmusic.com)
To understand the tithe, let's look at offerings First offering was Cain and Abel's. Cain's was rejected, because it came from the cursed ground. Offer what God commands. Tithe was first demonstrated by Abraham, prior to the law. Does this mean we need to circumcise and make animal sacrifices? The tithe became a part of the law much later It was in place, in part, to sustain the temple system and the priests The Levites had no inheritance Malachi 3 – God rebukes people for refusing the tithe Back to the Tithe, examined in light of the New Testament Give, and it will be given to you. Jesus is not a socialist, nor a capitalist 2 arguments to justify the tithe Abraham Argument Abraham tithed before the Law. Pressure to tithe puts us under the Law What about the year of Jubilee? Do we need to tithe AND forgive debts? What about charging interest? Jesus affirms the tithe (Luke 11:42, Matthew 23:23) What Jesus is actually talking about is righteousness and not being a hypocrite Don't disregard justice, have the love of God. This is before the fulfillment of the Law, and directed to professionals in the Law In the New Testament, there is no command to tithe. Instead there is giving up all things and sharing your life with others. If the tithe was for the priests, and we are all priests, who do you tithe to? What is the cost of being Jesus' disciple? Not 10% of your belongings. Under grace, the Law is actually amplified, because it's about the Spirit, your heart, your desires, not your ability to follow rules. God wants YOU. Your friends and family would not be satisfied with 10% of your paycheck. They want you. Songs: “To Obey is Better than Sacrifice” by Keith Green https://youtu.be/TzWyZxlwGKI “Enough” by Shaun Groves from his album “Third World Symphony”. Used by permission of Shaun Groves. http://www.shaungroves.com This episode was originally broadcast live on May 8, 2015 on KXEN 1010AM in St. Louis, MO For more info: www.sunministries.org Theme music: “The Resistance” by Josh Garrels (www.joshgarrels.com) licensed by Marmoset Music (www.marmosetmusic.com)
Why is the church so concerned with money, and what is mammon? Is it money, an idol, a false god, something else? If money has so many negative effects, why is the church so obsessed with it? When Jesus talked about money, He usually wasn't talking about money. You can only serve 1 master. The number of masters available to choose from is still up for discussion. Luke 16:9-13 The mammon of unrighteousness Mammon is mentioned only 4 times in scripture, and 3 times in this passage. What is the definition of mammon? If only “money opposed to God”, how can we be faithful with it? If mammon is “treasure or wealth”, what does that mean for you and your loyalties? Your lordship establishes your stewardship – If you serve the wrong god, you will never receive the TRUE things that are actually yours. Wealth disparity – is it too big? Is it just? Is it okay and good? The problem with tax exemption. Matthew 6:24 – the other mammon mention “For this reason” – because you will hate one master and serve the other, do not worry about needs, but seek first the Kingdom. Terry Rants: Does God want us rich or does God want us content? Things are valued differently in the Kingdom. Misuse of wealth and oppression causes pain, and the oppressed eventually speak out. You do not require a middle man to utilize your wealth to care for the poor Don't donate garbage What was the sin of Sodom? Encourage people with passion and big hearts, before they get sucked into bureaucracy Music “Rich Young Ruler” by Derek Webb http://derekwebb.com/track/932321/rich-young-ruler?feature_id=236920 “Enough” by Shaun Groves. http://shaungroves.com/ This episode was originally broadcast live on May 8, 2015 on KXEN 1010AM in St. Louis, MO For more info: www.sunministries.org Theme music: “The Resistance” by Josh Garrels (www.joshgarrels.com) licensed by Marmoset Music (www.marmosetmusic.com)
