In this powerful episode, Jim Ramos sits down with Richmond, a former Compassion International sponsor child whose story of loss, hopelessness, and redemption will leave you stunned. As a young boy facing unimaginable hardship, Richmond's life was transformed when one person chose to invest in him. Because real gratitude doesn't stop at “thank you”; it rolls up its sleeves and asks, “How can I join in?” Learn how Jesus sparked a revolution of generosity and how your gratitude can become someone else's breakthrough. Freely you have received… now freely give.
How often do we take our own blessings for granted? And how much more often do we neglect to steward what we've been given to make a life-changing and Gospel impact for those in need? I am partnering with Smartian's Purse this holiday season and had the pleasure of interviewing Kristy Graham to discuss how their ministry is changing the world one donation at a time. From beekeeping to raising chicks, all to feeding starving babies and digging wells, I want to encourage my listeners to give alongside me this holiday season and to reflect the heart of Christ this Christmas! Do your thoughts ever get the best of you? What if you could finally take control of your mind instead of letting it control you? In this Equipping Men in 10 episode, Jim Ramos breaks down three practical ways to tame your thoughts—inspired by Max Lucado's book Tame Your Thoughts. The goal: to help men learn how to stop destructive thinking before it starts, replace lies with truth, and live with more peace and self-control. By the end of this episode, you'll get advice on how to practice "picky thinking" and stop negative thoughts at the gate, as well as how to uproot toxic thoughts and replant them with God's Word. There are many parts to knowing God, but in Jeremiah 22:15–16, the Lord tells us that giving justice and help to the poor and needy—that is what it means to know Him.This is the Haunting Question that God asks us in our series this week, “Isn't that what it means to know me?” And this is what the ministry of Compassion International is all about. In this message we hear from not only Senior Pastor Jeff Maness, but also guest speaker Gerald Lorenzo. Gerald was a child of poverty in the Dominican Republic whose life was dramatically changed when someone began to sponsor him through Compassion International. Watch to hear more about this Christ-centered, Church-driven, child-focused organization that has been helping children since 1952. I've heard many people say, "Only God can judge me!" I've also heard others claim that Christian's shouldn't judge, or that they are too judgmental. But what does the Bible have to say about this? Sometimes, when we work with nonprofit executive leaders, it's easy to jump to an assumption about what they thought or what they wanted. On World Mental Health Day, youth mental health expert Bryan Gouge, PhD (Compassion International) sits down with Ginny to flip the script—from “fix the kid” to “build the village.” Bryan explains why mental health isn't just diagnoses; it's a practice we do together. You'll hear the four pillars guiding Compassion's global work—strength-based, youth-centric, trauma-informed, and locally owned—and how they translate into family life. His stories are unforgettable: teens in Nairobi's Dandora slum turning peer groups into a youth-led NGO, and the way reframing “symptoms” (anxious kids as hyper-observant, depressed kids as deeply empathetic) unlocks hidden strengths. He ties it all to nature and presence: shared sunsets, forest walks, and the simple power of truly listening—because resilience grows where kids feel known, loved, and protected. This conversation matters now because parents feel the pressure to perform while kids drown in stress and isolation. Bryan offers concrete moves you can make this week: write a short family mission, increase the ratio of caring adults in your child's life, choose gatherings over grind, consider how your neighborhood supports connection (even in small ways), and practice “listen before fix.” You'll leave with a hopeful, doable vision: resilient kids are built together, not alone. It's no surprise to me that so many Christians feel discouraged and hopeless because of everything going on in the world. There is division everywhere, unrest everywhere, injustice everywhere, and corruption everywhere. In this part 2 episode, I am concluding our dive into the book of Mark, where Jesus gives us the Greatest Command of loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Specifically speaking to the mind and our strength, we will explore how God can redeem our negative thoughts, restore our imaginations to glorify Him, and what it looks like to commit every gift and talent we've been given as an act of love and worship to the Lord. Jimmy Mellado leads Compassion International, a global, church-driven ministry serving children in poverty across 29 countries. Born in El Salvador (full name: Santiago “Jimmy” Mellado), he grew up across Latin America and Asia, ran decathlon at SMU, and later represented El Salvador in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. His life and leadership are anchored in faith, family, and a deep conviction that true impact starts with who we're becoming—then flows into what we do. In this episode, Brad sits down with Jimmy at Compassion's global ministry center in Colorado Springs for a candid conversation about identity, calling, technology, and the local church. Jimmy shares formative stories from his childhood and athletic journey, the moment he sensed a calling to serve the church after the Olympics, and the identity wake-up that led him to embrace his heritage. He talks about following Wess Stafford as CEO, why Compassion is first a church-equipping child discipleship organization (sponsorship is the funding mechanism, not the identity), and how the ministry is modernizing—moving to the cloud, piloting secure, real-time communication, and using AI to protect children online. Along the way, Jimmy offers grounded wisdom on leadership burdens, character, and doing God's work without sacrificing God's work in you. “Let's not do God's work in ways that hurt His work in us.” – Jimmy Mellado “His yoke is easy and His burden is light—so if it's heavy, who made it heavy?” – Jimmy Mellado “Special gifts can take a leader places where the absence of character won't let them stay.” – Jimmy Mellado This Week on The Wow Factor: Jimmy's upbringing: born in El Salvador, moving 40+ times as his engineer father built infrastructure across the developing world Early faith formation: parents as his “first pastors,” family as his first church while on the move Track to the Olympics: SMU scholarship and competing for El Salvador at the 1988 Seoul Olympics A calling in Seoul: witnessing church revival in South Korea and returning with a mission to serve the church Identity moment: embracing “Santiago” and his Latino heritage after being told “you don't count”—and how God used it to realign his calling Friendship with Wess Stafford and the path to leading Compassion What Compassion is: a church-equipping, child-discipleship ministry (sponsorship fuels the work but doesn't define it) The need right now: millions registered, hundreds of thousands awaiting sponsors—why the gap matters at the child level Modernizing at scale: retiring custom code, moving to cloud platforms, and building for quality, security, and growth Pilots in Peru and Ghana: secure, real-time communication among sponsors, children, and local church leaders Safety by design: using AI to flag inappropriate content and grooming language to protect kids A pastor's six-hour drive in Togo to make the plea: “Let me thank our sponsors and tell the story of impact.” Leadership and soul care: trading anxiety for gratitude, resisting the urge to carry what only God can carry Being vs. doing: why who you're becoming is the most important contribution you'll ever make Jimmy Mellado's Word of Wisdom: Become first, then do. Stay rooted in Christ, invite trusted voices to speak truth, and steward your assignment without making it heavy. The most enduring impact isn't what you accomplish—it's the person you're becoming as you walk with God. The approval trap is ensnaring way too many of us... what do I mean by this? We are drawn into the need for man's approval and applause, for everyone to love us or, at the very least, like us, and to never fail anyone's assumptions about us. But this is unrealistic. Friends, we are now living for an audience of One when we become Christians, and God's approval and affection toward us should be enough! Let's talk about it. Have you ever looked around and wondered, Is this really it? Or is God calling me to something more? In this episode, Meredith Brock, Kaley Olson, and Nicki Koziarz share how a trip to El Salvador with Compassion International unexpectedly shifted their perspective on calling and obedience and what it really means to live a life of purpose. You'll hear the powerful story of one woman whose quiet but courageous “yes” to God created a ripple effect — transforming her family, her community, and even the hearts of our team. If you're feeling unsure about your next step, worn out from waiting, or afraid your impact doesn't matter, this conversation will remind you: You don't have to know the outcome to walk in obedience. Sometimes the most world-changing thing you can do is simply show up and say yes. You'll learn:How to identify “holy discomfort” and what it reveals about the core of your calling. How to move forward with confidence even when the first step seems unclear. Why God may lead you into uncomfortable places to share His light. What power one small “yes” has to make an eternal impact. The temptation to hide when we hurt and isolate when we go through shameful seasons is doing a lot more harm to us than healing for us. It's in stepping out into the light, seeking to be known by a healthy community, that we can move out of our pain into a posture of real connection and direction. My friend Toni Collier has lived this, written about this, and shares about her public divorce, the pain from her husband's affair, and the healing journey God took her on through community in today's episode and in her new book, which is available NOW! What even is gossip? Is it going too far with the facts? Is it speaking behind someone’s back? What does the Bible actually have to say about it, and how can we start speaking life and honoring people with our speech instead of slandering and tearing them down? That's what we are diving into in this week's episode!
