Brennan Wertz wasn't expecting much at Levi's GranFondo last weekend. At 6'5” and over 200 pounds, he isn't the type of rider who usually excels at races with nearly 14,000 feet of climbing, and, to use his own description, he'd “got his doors blown off” last year. But through savvy tactics and a sense of having nothing to lose, he managed to spend most of the six-hour race in two breakaways and landed in fifth after a bunch sprint for the win. On this episode, Brennan gives a play-by-play of his race, including insights on how to pace a breakaway, how he drafts off of much smaller riders, and the moment that he truly took in the magnitude of his effort. Detroit-based luxury design brand Shinola sells everything from jewelry to bikes to journals. In 2019, it even opened a hotel in downtown Detroit. But the is currently laser-focused on refining the answer to the question, “What's the first thing you think of when you think of Shinola?” And it wants that to be watches. “We lost that [focus on watches] for a little while,” said Kevin Wertz, CMO at Bedrock, the platform company that owns Shinola. Bedrock also owns the outerwear brand Filson. Shinola, founded in 2011, quickly gained a following because it was bringing manufacturing jobs back to Detroit. In 2012, the brand opened a 12,000-square-foot watch factory in the city. Over the next few years, it used its expertise in design and craftsmanship to expand into new categories. But in 2016, Shinola ran into a hurdle when the FTC ruled that the company could not use the tagline “Built in Detroit.” Even though Shinola has a watch factory in the U.S., its watches — like all watch brands — largely rely on imported parts. Now, Shinola's watches say “Built in Detroit with Swiss and imported parts.” "We're going back to the idea that we are designing and assembling watches in downtown Detroit,” Wertz said. Despite this, Shinola has found that the best way to tell its story is to do more showing, rather than telling. Wertz said the content that has performed the best for Shinola is raw photos and videos from its factories showing how its watches are made. "People say, 'I don't know what watches being made actually looks like,'” he said, regarding the interest. Wertz joined the Modern Retail podcast this week to talk about how Shinola is refining its brand story.

Homeschooling has the power to shape not just families, but entire communities. In this thought-provoking conversation, Dr. Myles Wertz (associate professor of theology and director of Baptist Studies at Abilene Christian University) joins HSLDA Attorney Will Estrada to explore Dr. Wertz's recent article in Christianity Today and his own personal homeschool journey. When parents choose homeschooling out of a desire to do what's best for their children, the ripple effects extend far beyond the family—fostering individuals who enrich their communities and drive positive change in society. “When we allow families to pursue homeschooling, we find that certain practices or ways of educating begin to bubble up from the surface that wouldn't have been discovered or wouldn't have been understood had there not been the room for homeschooling to exist. . .I think education needs to be more personalized and more attentive to the particular needs of students in nature. I think that's something that homeschooling can naturally do.”—Dr. Myles Werntz
Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
The winds of existence often carry us to realms of insight and transformation, and today's conversation is a testament to the profundity of our journey. On this episode, we welcome Rebbeca Wertz, a courageous soul who has traversed the path of spiritual awakening, shedding light on the mysteries of pre-birth experiences and beyond.Rebbeca Wertz's journey began within the structured confines of the Mormon church, a faith that provided her with a foundation but ultimately left her seeking deeper truths. Her childhood was marred by trauma, and she found herself grappling with questions that the church could not answer. It was through this period of turmoil that she embarked on a quest for understanding, exploring various spiritual realms and diving into self-discovery.Her journey into spirituality intensified after discovering near-death experiences (NDEs) on endof.org. "I felt like I was remembering things I already knew," Rebbeca explains, describing her all-night reading sessions that catalyzed her spiritual awakening. This awakening opened her to divine encounters, including spontaneous Kundalini awakenings and contact with what she refers to as divine extraterrestrial beings. One of the most striking aspects of her story is her vivid pre-birth experiences.During a period of deep introspection, she recalled being in a room with her soul family, planning their lives and the challenges they would face. "I remember saying, I want to go down at this time and do that, and come into this family group," she recalls. This memory, albeit vague, gave her profound insight into her life's purpose and the trials she volunteered to undertake, including her abusive past.Rebbeca's descriptions are both fascinating and deeply moving. In another pre-birth memory, she found herself as a small, curious orb in a heavenly domain. She eagerly volunteered for a life on Earth, likening the experience to preparing for a roller coaster ride. "It was shown to me so I wouldn't freak out," she says, describing how she entered a light body and then a physical form, feeling the excitement and trepidation of her chosen journey. Her spiritual path has not been without its earthly challenges. From confronting her abuser and dealing with the trauma's aftermath to experiencing severe medical crises during childbirth, Rebbeca's resilience is awe-inspiring. These experiences have gifted her with heightened psychic abilities and a profound understanding of life's interconnectedness.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSSelf-Compassion is Essential: Through her struggles, Rebbeca learned the critical importance of self-compassion. It's a vital component of healing, allowing us to nurture ourselves with the same kindness we extend to others.Spiritual Awakening is a Journey: Rebbeca's story highlights that spiritual awakening is an ongoing process, often triggered by life's most challenging experiences. It involves shedding old beliefs and embracing new, more expansive understandings of existence.Embrace Your Path with Courage: Rebbeca's decision to openly share her experiences, despite societal skepticism, underscores the power of living authentically. Her courage serves as an inspiration for others to embrace their own spiritual journeys, no matter how unconventional.Rebbeca's experiences remind us that our lives are intricately woven with purpose and divine guidance. Her story encourages us to seek deeper truths, embrace self-compassion, and live courageously. Through her journey, we see the beauty of transformation and the limitless possibilities that lie within each of us.Please enjoy my conversation with Rebbeca Wertz.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

September 29, 1954 - Willie Mays makes his famous running catch off the bat of Vic Wertz in game one of the World Series. In the eighth inning with a 2-2 tie and men on 1st and 2nd, Wertz slammed a 420 foot shot to the cavernous center field of the Polo Grounds. Mays was playing shallow, since Giants pitcher Don Liddle was a groundball pitcher, and had to turn his back to the infield sprinting for the outfield wall. Mays made an over the shoulder catch and a quick turn firing the ball to the infield holding Larry Doby at 3rd base and preserving the tie. As much as has been made of the catch, Mays himself did not consider it the best defensive play he ever made.September 29, 1974 - Lou Brock steals his 118th and last base on the final day of the season setting the record for steals in a single season. Ricky Henderson would break that record in 1982 with 130 thefts.September 29, 1978 - Jim Rice doubles and singles against the Toronto Blue Jays in Fenway Park. Rice is the first American Leaguer to amass 400 total bases since Joe DiMaggio in 1937.September 29, 2004 - MLB officially announces that the Montreal Expos franchise will move to Washington, DC in 2005. Hours after this, the Expos play their final game in Montreal, a 9 - 1 loss to the Florida Marlins before a crowd of 31,395 at Olympic Stadium.September 29, 1957 Ted Williams becomes the oldest batting champ when the 39-year old finishes the season with a .388 average.

Boris Wertz, the founding partner at Version One Ventures, a VC firm that invests in marketplaces and other startups, joins CJ to discuss the evolution and dynamics of marketplace models. Boris sheds light on his early years as a founder and operator at AbeBooks, and what he learned from selling the platform to Amazon during the dot-com boom. He explains the benefits of focusing on a niche instead of going too broad, how he solved the chicken and egg problem, and what it means to be a long-tail model operator. He and CJ discuss where we are today in the development life cycle of marketplaces and why having the mindshare of the buyer is more important than owning the underlying supply. Hear how the financial profiles of marketplace models differ from typical SaaS models, the importance of understanding where demand and supply match in what Boris refers to as a “hotspot”, and what metric is more important than the take rate and the average selling price. Brennan Wertz spent eight years as a top-level rower before transitioning to cycling. During that time, he raced for Stanford, nabbed a world record, and chased the Olympics before injuries sidelined him. When he picked up cycling to pass the rehab time, he fell in love with the sport and never looked back. In 2021, he jumped into Unbound and landed in the top 10. This year, he's racing in the Life Time Grand Prix, which brings a whole new set of unknowns. In this conversation, Brennan sits down with Payson in Monterrey, CA to talk about his rowing career, finding his way into cycling, and why he was hooked on gravel from the start. With only a year and a half of racing under his belt, he's aware that he doesn't have the experience that his competitors have, but with years of rowing, he's got the power numbers and the mentality to make up for it. He talks about how much he enjoys getting out of his comfort zone, how he's tried to bring the team spirit of rowing into his gravel training, and how he hopes to prove that bigger racers can perform at the highest levels of the sport. This year, he isn't looking forward to the events that his 6 foot 5, 200-pound frame is most suited for, but to the races that pose new challenges. Mountain biking at Sea Otter and elevation at Leadville are two of the events he's most excited about, and he tells Payson about how he's training for them, and whether he'd ever be interested in dipping his toe in professional road racing.Instagram: @theadventurestache
