Hello to you Michelle, listening in lovely Victoria by the sea, BC, CanadaLand!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for a story) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I am a story doula. I believe that stories are alive! They can follow you home, sit at your table, sleep in your bed. I also believe that stories seek us out so that right story comes to us just when we need it.Letters also tell stories. But what if the letters got lost? What happens to the stories they contain? Is there a home for lost letters and their stories? Indeed there is! Japan's Missing Post Office.   Until the 1990s, Awashima Island in Japan's Seto Inland Sea had a flourishing port where sailors stopped to send and receive letters and telegrams. When the port closed the letters kept on coming to the now dead post office. In 2013 the artist Kubota Saya transformed the dead post office into Japan's Missing Post Office, a place where locals and visitors can come, read letters, and send letters to those departed souls who are beyond receiving the letter but not the thought.Japan's Missing Post Office receives 10 to 20 letters without addressees daily from those seeking closure, comfort, or simply a means to express emotions that have no other outlet. The stories in the letters are there to be read, cherished, and shared. There might be one waiting for you.Meanwhile, even if you are not able to visit the Missing Post Office yourself, you can send a letter to join the others. The address and links to articles about Japan's Missing Post Office are in the Episode Notes.Story Prompt: To whom would you like to express yourself in a letter and what would you say? Andrea Gibson, a beloved poet and artist, recently passed away. We are honored to share this special encore episode of their conversation with Tami Simon that originally aired in 2023. Great poets expand our view—of ourselves, of each other, and of the entire universe. Andrea Gibson was named Colorado's 2023–25 Poet Laureate for their celebrated verses on love, LGBTQ issues, spirituality, mental health, social justice, and more. Tami Simon speaks with Andrea about their approach to work and how their journey through cancer radically changed that approach. This poignant conversation featuring Andrea's reading of their poem, “Acceptance Speech After Setting the World Record in Goosebumps” and exploring spiritual surrender, finding joy in every instant, facing challenges, moving through grief, the life force of the universe within us, self-love and loving the whole world, trying softer (not harder), the power of relaxation, identifying the keys that open your heart, staying with our fear, activism and loosening our attachment to desired outcomes, being yourself fully, the gift of mortality, giving the present moment the cold shoulder, why authenticity is the most important thing when it comes to writing, the pull of creativity, and more.

Send us a textToday's discussion is with a very special person- Father Greg Boyle, an American Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries, which is the largest gang rehabilitation and reentry program in the world. In Father Greg's own words, he says it has been the privilege of his life, for more than 30 years, to have been taught everything of value by gang members and that he stands in awe of what many of the disadvantaged, powerless, voiceless, and marginalized have had to carry in their lives.Father Greg founded Homeboy Industries nearly 40 years ago at the Dolores Mission Parish in Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles. His work has received the highest recognition - in 2014, former President Obama named Father Greg as a Champion of Change, and President Joe Biden recently awarded him the Congressional Medal of Freedom, a testament to the profound impact he has had on so many people's lives.Homeboy Industries is built upon two foundational principles that are directly responsible for infusing such a deep sense of love, hope, compassion, and kinship throughout the organization:Everyone is unshakeably good, there are no exceptions. We all belong to each other, and there are no exceptions.Father Greg believes that no bullet can pierce these truths, and that when gang members know this truth, they begin to inhabit it and develop the compassion and tenderness needed to transform not only their own lives, but the lives of all members of Homeboy Industries. In our conversation today, Greg shares life lessons he has learned through his work, but also how this work has changed his life for the better and given him the purpose and hope needed to continue his efforts every day.We also dive into his most recent book, "Cherished Belonging: The Healing Power of Love in Divided Times." I hope as many listeners as possible get their hands on a copy of this book.Connect with Homeboy Industries: WebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeLinkedInContact Homeboy Industries here.Father Greg's 2012 Ted TalkLinks to Father Greg's other books: Tattoos on the HeartThe Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant TendernessBarking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship

My dad carried his beloved Bible for more than thirty years before the worn binding finally split in two. When we took it to a book binder for professional restoration, the craftsman was curious about what made the book so special. It wasn’t an expensive antique, and its pages were full of handwritten notes. His questions about the Bible created an opportunity for my family to share the gospel and pray with him. Yes, the Bible is more than just a family heirloom or a nice decoration. Inside its pages are the “words of eternal life” (John 6:68) as God reveals Himself to us through His Son. The opening chapter of the gospel of John describes Jesus, the “Word” of God (1:1) who made His home with us (v. 14). The Bible contains not only the account of the life of Jesus but also all of God’s activity throughout the ages from creation to its eventual redemption. During His time on earth, Jesus spoke words that were “full of the Spirit and life” (6:63). When He gave a difficult teaching and the crowds grumbled and many “turned back and no longer followed him” (vv. 60–66), His disciples chose to stay. They realized that no other words could satisfy. My dad felt the same way about his Bible. Through many mountains and valleys in his life, God provided hope, direction, comfort, and truth through the words of Scripture.

Cooperation, respect and strategic interdependence have long characterized the US-Canada relationship. Now, in a matter of weeks, that mutual friendliness has been jeopardized by a trade war and increasing threats from President Donald Trump about annexing Canada. Also, in Turkey, the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, has announced a ceasefire. What the ceasefire means for security in the region. Also, Bhutan is leaning on bitcoin mining to power a much-needed economic recovery. And, astronomers are sounding the alarm about the impact of a planned renewable energy plant in Chile's Atacama desert. The area is home to some of the most-advanced observatories on Earth because of the unmatched darkness of the night sky. Listen to today's Music Heard on Air. Louie shares his journey into waterfowl hunting, the challenges of guiding, and the various species he targets. They discuss the dynamics of hunting seasons, the importance of scouting, and the community aspect of waterfowl hunting. Louie also shares his experiences traveling for hunting and the techniques that contribute to success in the field. Louie talks about his journey as the owner of 11 Lakes Outfitters. He discusses the challenges he faced in starting his guide service, how the average season goes for him and the enjoyment he gets from taking people hunting. Louie emphasizes the unique experiences he offers clients, the lessons he learned along the way, and the cherished memories created in the field. He also shares insights into the future of his business and his personal interests in fitness and training. Takeaways: Louie Scafetta owns a guiding service called Eleven Lakes Outfitters. He started guiding in 2019 and also runs a construction company. Waterfowl hunting is primarily focused on the experience rather than just the kill. Louie's journey into waterfowl hunting began later in life, influenced by friends and family. He emphasizes the importance of scouting for successful hunts. The hunting community is small, and building relationships is crucial. Lou has shot 34 of the 41 species of ducks in New York. Traveling for hunting has become an annual tradition for Lou and his friends. He highlights the challenges of hunting pressure during the September goose season. Louie believes in making friends rather than enemies in the hunting community. An average New York hunter can expect around 200 birds in a season. 11 Lakes Outfitters was inspired by a personal connection to Canisius Lake. Lou faced skepticism when starting his guide service due to his limited experience. Building a good reputation in the guiding community takes time and effort. The hunting experience is about more than just the hunt; it's about camaraderie. Safety is a top priority for Lou during hunts. Clients should come with an open mind and be ready for unpredictable hunting conditions. Access to land is crucial for successful hunting. Cherished memories often come from shared experiences in the field. Lou is focused on growing his business and enhancing client experiences.
