Lawmakers in Salem recently enacted a series of substantive tweaks to the state's beloved Bottle Bill, which allows residents to return cans and bottles for 10 cents apiece. Those changes have helped amplify a growing and complicated debate about Oregon's first-in-the-nation program, now more than 50 years old. Does Portland and some other pockets of the state have a cash-for-cans crisis? What should city and state officials do about the drug, crime and livability problems surrounding some BottleDrops? And will these revisions to the Bottle Bill make the issue better or worse? On the latest Beat Check, reporters Aimee Green and Shane Dixon Kavanaugh discuss Green's four-part series that digs deep into these questions and many more. Send us a textToday's discussion is with a very special person- Father Greg Boyle, an American Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries, which is the largest gang rehabilitation and reentry program in the world. In Father Greg's own words, he says it has been the privilege of his life, for more than 30 years, to have been taught everything of value by gang members and that he stands in awe of what many of the disadvantaged, powerless, voiceless, and marginalized have had to carry in their lives.Father Greg founded Homeboy Industries nearly 40 years ago at the Dolores Mission Parish in Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles. His work has received the highest recognition - in 2014, former President Obama named Father Greg as a Champion of Change, and President Joe Biden recently awarded him the Congressional Medal of Freedom, a testament to the profound impact he has had on so many people's lives.Homeboy Industries is built upon two foundational principles that are directly responsible for infusing such a deep sense of love, hope, compassion, and kinship throughout the organization:Everyone is unshakeably good, there are no exceptions. We all belong to each other, and there are no exceptions.Father Greg believes that no bullet can pierce these truths, and that when gang members know this truth, they begin to inhabit it and develop the compassion and tenderness needed to transform not only their own lives, but the lives of all members of Homeboy Industries. In our conversation today, Greg shares life lessons he has learned through his work, but also how this work has changed his life for the better and given him the purpose and hope needed to continue his efforts every day.We also dive into his most recent book, "Cherished Belonging: The Healing Power of Love in Divided Times." I hope as many listeners as possible get their hands on a copy of this book.Connect with Homeboy Industries: WebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeLinkedInContact Homeboy Industries here.Father Greg's 2012 Ted TalkLinks to Father Greg's other books: Tattoos on the HeartThe Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant TendernessBarking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship

My dad carried his beloved Bible for more than thirty years before the worn binding finally split in two. When we took it to a book binder for professional restoration, the craftsman was curious about what made the book so special. It wasn’t an expensive antique, and its pages were full of handwritten notes. His questions about the Bible created an opportunity for my family to share the gospel and pray with him. Yes, the Bible is more than just a family heirloom or a nice decoration. Inside its pages are the “words of eternal life” (John 6:68) as God reveals Himself to us through His Son. The opening chapter of the gospel of John describes Jesus, the “Word” of God (1:1) who made His home with us (v. 14). The Bible contains not only the account of the life of Jesus but also all of God’s activity throughout the ages from creation to its eventual redemption. During His time on earth, Jesus spoke words that were “full of the Spirit and life” (6:63). When He gave a difficult teaching and the crowds grumbled and many “turned back and no longer followed him” (vv. 60–66), His disciples chose to stay. They realized that no other words could satisfy. My dad felt the same way about his Bible. Through many mountains and valleys in his life, God provided hope, direction, comfort, and truth through the words of Scripture.

They discuss the dynamics of hunting seasons, the importance of scouting, and the community aspect of waterfowl hunting. Louie also shares his experiences traveling for hunting and the techniques that contribute to success in the field. Louie talks about his journey as the owner of 11 Lakes Outfitters. He discusses the challenges he faced in starting his guide service, how the average season goes for him and the enjoyment he gets from taking people hunting. Louie emphasizes the unique experiences he offers clients, the lessons he learned along the way, and the cherished memories created in the field. He also shares insights into the future of his business and his personal interests in fitness and training. Takeaways: Louie Scafetta owns a guiding service called Eleven Lakes Outfitters. He started guiding in 2019 and also runs a construction company. Waterfowl hunting is primarily focused on the experience rather than just the kill. Louie's journey into waterfowl hunting began later in life, influenced by friends and family. He emphasizes the importance of scouting for successful hunts. The hunting community is small, and building relationships is crucial. Lou has shot 34 of the 41 species of ducks in New York. Traveling for hunting has become an annual tradition for Lou and his friends. He highlights the challenges of hunting pressure during the September goose season. Louie believes in making friends rather than enemies in the hunting community. An average New York hunter can expect around 200 birds in a season. 11 Lakes Outfitters was inspired by a personal connection to Canisius Lake. Lou faced skepticism when starting his guide service due to his limited experience. Building a good reputation in the guiding community takes time and effort. The hunting experience is about more than just the hunt; it's about camaraderie. Safety is a top priority for Lou during hunts. Clients should come with an open mind and be ready for unpredictable hunting conditions. Access to land is crucial for successful hunting. Cherished memories often come from shared experiences in the field. Lou is focused on growing his business and enhancing client experiences. Carolina Allen discusses Innate Worth with Jeremy Boberg, LCSW, who specializes in treating trauma and unmet needs and addictions.    *Trigger warning for discussion of suicide, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, and human trafficking.   Carolina and Jeremy discuss the value of seeking help if you've been the victim of abuse or trauma. Help is available in many forms. Everyone is of worth, regardless of what they've experienced in life. Domestic violence and abuse were exacerbated Covid as people had to shelter in place and women and children around the world have experienced the brunt of it. We need to start discussing these issues, break down barriers, and find ways to offer support and help.Abuse can happen on a large scale or small scale.    Jeremy cited that the biggest sexual trafficking busts happen around the Super Bowl every year. Then there is the small-scale ritualistic abuse happening in homes that often goes unnoticed and victims feel voiceless.    A good therapist can help you shift focus and work through the trauma and abuse. Our bodies store trauma and hold a record of our experiences. Jeremy shares some typical traumas held in different parts of the body, specifically throat and hips.    Jeremy has seen success with many clients willing to put in the work and shares a story of one specific woman who has come back from a meth addiction, risen from dissociative disorder, regained custody of her children and now works as a successful therapist.    QUOTES:   “People who've been hurt, betrayed and have unmet needs, are also the people who are desperate to be seen to be valued, to be nurtured and wanted.”  - Jeremy Boberg, LCSW   “Doing what we're supposed to do means we have to give a voice. We have to be willing to have the humility to do something different. And when we start to be willing to talk about it, when we're willing to share our story, by leaning into that vulnerability, life changes and it is an incredible journey, incredible experience.”  - Jeremy Boberg, LCSW   “I love that we're having this discussion. After previously talking about faith and the role that faith plays, because I think it's integral in this yearning for something better, you know and that we can't do it ourselves that we need help and help comes in the forms of therapists like you and a community, and family possibly, but definitely a higher power. Definitely, you know, God, I, I can't help but see the common thread between anyone that has survived something so, so horrific.”  - Carolina Allen “I really do because I want any listener out there feeling like they're broken or like, you know, they're reluctant about going into this new year after so many blows after so many hardships and heartbreaks that the future is bright and that there are so many people who are battling Life right alongside you that you're not alone and that you are completely unique, completely valuable and worthy.” - Carolina Allen   “It's okay to seek help. It's okay to find people you can share your story to. And as you do so that's where healing takes place. We are, we are a people that need one another, and loneliness is the darkest abyss of humanity. Don't be lonely. It's up to you to find and reach out.” - Jeremy Boberg, LCSW   With 24-years in behavioral health and dual diagnosis treatment, Jeremy founded and is CEO of the Utah Trauma and Addiction Centers. As a trauma-focused psychotherapist, he is trained in the Othmer method of neurofeedback and practices using a holistic person-centered treatment approach for mental health and addictions. He specializes in the treatment of substance abuse, sexual/pornography addiction, posttraumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, dissociative disorders, and borderline personality disorder (BPD). He completed his Master's in Social Work at the University of Utah and holds several specialty certifications. He is certified by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), is a National Interventionist II, National Chemical Addiction Counselor II, Equine Assisted Psychotherapist, and is a Certified Sex Addiction and Multiple Addiction Therapist (CSAT/CMAT) through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals. He is a past president of the Association of Utah Substance Abuse Professionals and has served on multiple state and national boards for the treatment of mental health and substance abuse. In 1995, he married his high school sweetheart, Emily, and together they have four children. Cherished time with his family often includes outdoor activities including mountain biking, hiking, hunting, and travel.   Carolina Allen is the founder and leader of Big Ocean Women, the international maternal feminist organization representing perspectives of faith, family, and motherhood throughout civil society. Carolina holds a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Utah with an emphasis in cultural religions and philosophy of science. Her inspirational and philosophical work has been presented at various international U.N. conferences. She is a native of Brazil, and a fluent trilingual. The Psalms captured our particular attention this morning, although all the chapters we read were full of drama – arising from – or anticipating – the actions of the Almighty. In Exodus we read of the night of the Passover with the angel of the Lord destroying all the firstborn in Egypt. An incredible outcry followed – how comparable will that be with the chaos at the return of Christ? The time will come, records Isaiah, when “the LORD is enraged against all the nations … he has devoted them to destruction … for the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.” [34 v.2,8] Zion (Jerusalem) attracts more and more political interest – but the leaders of the nations are blind to “the cause of Zion.”Today we start reading the Gospel of Mark – and reflected on the impact John the Baptist obviously had when “all the country and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him confessing their sins.” [v.5] We struggle to imagine the impact of John. It seems only half the story is told, since John did no miracles – what power must have been in his preaching! He laid the foundation for Jesus to build upon, his work was to “Prepare the way of the Lord.” [v.3] says Mark, quoting Malachi 3 v.1.Psalm 66 contains a challenge to sinners; it could be that John used this Psalm in his preaching. “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul … high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.” [v.16-19] How fitting it would be if these words were part of John's witness and appeal and challenge to those ordinary people who came to him in the wilderness by the Jordon – paving the way for the preaching of Jesus. Finally, Psalm 67 is a prayer that God's “way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let all the peoples praise you O God…” [v.2,3] leading to a time when ”the nations …. sing for joy for you judge the peoples with equity (justice) and guide the nations upon earth.” [v.4] This short but most meaningful Psalm concludes, “God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him:.” We can add, ‘when Christ rules.'Those who really have God's word in their hearts and feed on it daily will be known and owned by their Lord in that day – for he will know that they have not cherished iniquity in their hearts.

Does what we listen to matter? I love singing Christmas carols with my kids! I love going caroling. We are going to give cards and sing tomorrow night, and I can't wait.  So often when I listen to Christmas songs that are randomly playing, I only get the modern songs, many of which I love. But, I love hearing the old carols. So - we have three playlists for us all to enjoy! They are the same songs, but one list is modern, another is traditional and the other is instrumental. I love playing instrumental music in the background while I am working or when the kids are homeschooling. There is something so soothing about it. I have also loved listening to my kids singing along with these carols. I hope that you get as much joy from these as we have!  We had said we were going to put these on Spotify, but one of us doesn't have Spotify, so these are on Amazon instead.  Training Them Wisely: https://www.trainingthemwisely.com Instrumental List: https://music.amazon.com/user-playlists/9f786c95022c4b95acc15831f97bafecsune?ref=dm_sh_gIDqOOzbC7AMusMYOedhKlwwo&referrer=dm_sh_messages Modern List: https://music.amazon.com/user-playlists/ddd5fda04e2a490e871dec4824442630sune?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&ref=dm_sh_thOezBTCrBgnJCiCay5KLBvz6 Traditional List: https://music.amazon.com/user-playlists/d8d7d7d3ac384283b535bd6050bbd945sune?ref=dm_sh_SYej2z9HTZY2Pyop8bNpuEK2W&referrer=dm_sh_messages   The Real Story of Christmas: https://amzn.to/4gvm00A   Here are the carols we included: Joy to the World The First Noel -O Come All Ye Faithful I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day O Holy Night O Little Town of Bethlehem Hark the Herald Angels Sing Angels We Have Heard on High Silent Night, Holy Night Away in the Manger Angels from the Realms of Glory O Come, O Come Emmanuel It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Go, Tell it on the Mountain Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus What Child is This God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen Mary Did You Know Scripture quotations are from the ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.
