Chris Hall joins Stephanie Rousselle to reflect on the practice of delighting in God, especially during life's later chapters or grief-laden season. The conversation weaves through wisdom gained in the “winter of life,” the significance of gratitude, and the centrality of God's relational nature.Chris Hall begins by honestly discussing aging, recognizing the “gift of years,” and learning acceptance—particularly of life's inherent limitations and future partings. Acceptance, he says, is not resignation, but a posture of gratitude and detachment from what's fleeting, allowing deeper attachment to what matters most: God's loving presence and the relationships He's given us.Daily, Chris Hall and his wife pray, focusing on thankfulness. Even in uncertainty or suffering—as exemplified by their grandson with Down syndrome—gratitude centers their hearts on God's mercy. “Lord, have mercy” becomes a foundational prayer, acknowledging deep dependence and God's persistent goodness. The journey hasn't always been simple. Chris Hall shares that, particularly through experiences as a deputy coroner and witnessing immense suffering in places like Los Angeles, Calcutta, and Rwanda, he's grappled with whether God is truly good. Encountering pain and tragedy forced honest questions: “Are you good or not?” But with time and spiritual wrestling, he's emerged with a hard-won conviction of God's steadfastness. In today's culture, delight is often confused with self-focus—“you have to love yourself first.” Chris Hall counters this, insisting that genuine delight is secondary, a “byproduct” of being drawn out of ourselves by something beautiful (the character of God, deep friendships, acts of love). This self-forgetfulness mirrors the Trinity—God's relational essence—and is central to spiritual formation.Using friendship as an example, Chris Hall speaks of the deep grief that attends the loss of his best friend—grief is the “tax we pay for loving.” Yet, grief and joy are intertwined. The richness of a 50-year friendship is the soil from which delight blooms; our relationships (rooted in God's relational nature) are the stage for both love and loss. For anyone struggling to delight in God, Chris Hall gently advises: “Lead with beauty.” Recognize the goodness around you—even in small ways. Beauty draws us out of our self-absorption into a posture of wonder, gratitude, and worship. He encourages practices like meditating on the Psalms and savoring passages from John's, Romans, and Hebrews to nourish this vision.Delight in God is neither sentimental nor shallow—it's a mature joy forged in gratitude, beauty, courage, and faithfulness through all seasons. It invites us to accept limitations, let go of self-preoccupation, and savor God's goodness, even amidst suffering. As Chris Hall and Stephanie Rousselle remind us, delight is tasted, seen, and deeply known—not chased for its own sake, but discovered in God Himself.MORE ABOUT "AWAKEN DELIGHT" BY STEPHANIE ROUSSELLE"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Have you ever wondered if your faithfulness really matters? Have you ever obeyed God only to feel misunderstood, rejected, or exhausted? Jeremiah 15 takes us into one of the prophet's lowest moments, where he questions his calling and pours out his heart before God. But instead of removing the hardship, God gives Jeremiah something even greater; His presence, His strength, and a renewed purpose. This chapter reminds us that God's greatest encouragement isn't always an easier path; sometimes it's the assurance that He will walk with us through the difficult one. As always be blessed and enjoy. Please follow, like, and share our podcast with a friend or family member!

Watch the Devotion Based on Ephesians 1:4-6 You Are Chosen At the time of this recording, I first learned the names of the four US Soldiers who gave their lives in service to our country: Sgt. Michael Swinton, Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 1st Lt. Tyler Feehan, Pfc. Isabella Gonzales. Combat, war, death, physical wounds, the unseen wounds of trauma and moral injury—these are all evidence of the presence of the devil at work in our world, and the influence of sin on the hearts of sinful people who want to kill and destroy. During times like this, you wonder, and you ask God questions, “How am I to trust you when there is no guarantee that I will make it home from deployment in one piece or alive at all? How am I to trust you when I have prayed to come home, and we continue to be extended indefinitely? How am I to trust you when my loved one or friend is downrange and life is falling apart around me?” When you wonder if God cares for you, when you question his love for you, when you believe Satan's lie that God is not capable to provide or protect you. . .then ask, “What does God say in times like this?” Listen to these truths from the Apostle Paul's letter to the Ephesians, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves” (Ephesians 1:4-6). Before God created the world, he decided in his heart that he would choose you to be saved. In time he made that election and calling certain at your baptism. Baptized in water and the Word, he adopted you into his family. You are his son or daughter, for now and for eternity. He did all of this in Christ, that is, because of what Jesus Christ has done for you. He was blameless and holy for you. He shed his blood for you. He loved you. And so, God chose you in Christ. War and combat, injury of mind and soul, grief and sorrow, not even death can change this truth: You are chosen in Christ. Therefore, you are his son. You are his daughter. You are the object of his love, in life and in death. Prayer: Father, your thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are your ways our ways. In your wisdom you have allowed the terrors of war to strike the families of these four Soldiers who died in service to our country. Do not let their sacrifice be in vain. Comfort those who grieve with the sure promise of the resurrection from the dead. Send your holy angels to protect our war fighters while they are training and actively engaged in combat. Bring peace to this region of the world so that we may live in peace. Amen. Written and recorded by Rev. Paul Horn, WELS National Civilian Chaplain to the Military, San Diego, California. You probably know Rebecca Rittenhouse from her roles on The Mindy Project, Blood & Oil, His & Hers, and more. But behind the success was an industry that required constant resilience, rejection, and the ability to keep showing up even when the answer was no. When the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes brought uncertainty to her career, Rebecca was forced to confront how much of her future depended on being chosen by others. That moment pushed her to take control, step into the unknown, and build something of her own: Privet Beauty. In this episode of Superwomen, Rebecca shares how her years as an actor prepared her for entrepreneurship, why creating her own opportunities became essential, and what she had to learn (and unlearn) in order to become the founder she is today. The Towel and the Basin: The Heart of a Servant – John 13:1–17 In Episode 145 of Divine Table Talk, Jamie and Jane begin one of the most intimate and transformative sections of the Gospel of John. In John 13:1–17, Jesus—the King of kings—kneels to wash the feet of His disciples, revealing that true greatness in God's Kingdom is found in humble service. Together, they unpack the significance of this unforgettable moment, exploring what it means to love sacrificially, lead with humility, and serve others with the heart of Christ. Peter's struggle to accept Jesus' act of service also reminds us that following Jesus means learning both to receive His grace and to extend it to others. This episode is an invitation to exchange pride for humility, status for service, and self-centered living for the example Jesus modeled on the night before the cross. As followers of Christ, we're not just called to admire His example—we're called to live it. Who is Jesus inviting me to serve with humility this week, and am I willing to lay down my pride to love like He loved?____________________________________ Connect with Jamie: Website: www.jamieklusacek.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jamieklusacek Connect with Jane: Website: www.janewwilliams.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/janewwilliams
Ashe in America and Ghost close the book on Season 4 of The Chosen with a full recap, and honestly, it is a lot to unpack. They trace the season's throughline of humility versus ego across nearly every major character, from the shock of John the Baptist's execution in episode one to Judas's slow drift toward betrayal by the finale. Expect a candid breakdown of how the show handles Shmuel and Yusuf's opposite reactions to witnessing Lazarus raised, why Judas is written as sympathetic rather than purely villainous, and how faith, grief, and false humility show up again and again this season. The hosts also share a few behind the scenes notes about the show's format shifting as they head into the final season, plus a laugh or two courtesy of their sponsors. It is a warm, reflective conversation for anyone who has followed along, and a great primer before Season 5 kicks off with Palm Sunday next week.

What does it truly mean to be “the firstborn” in Scripture? Is it simply about being the first biological child physically born, or is there a deeper covenantal meaning woven throughout the Word of Yahuah? In this episode, we will dive into the biblical concept of the firstborn (bekhor) and discover that throughout Scripture, Yahuah repeatedly chooses people who were not first according to human order—but were chosen according to His sovereign purpose. From Esau and Jacob, Reuben and Joseph, to Manasseh and Ephraim, Scripture reveals a pattern: the birthright is not ultimately about human position, but about the one appointed to carry the responsibility, inheritance, and covenant purpose of the firstborn. The mystery of the firstborn reveals a deeper, covenantal pattern woven throughout Scripture. What Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Midlife Women Can Teach Us About Self-Worth. While attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I found myself reflecting on two classic stories—The Taming of the Shrew and Emma. Although these stories were written centuries apart, they both revolved around a familiar question that many women still ask today: What is my value if I'm not in a relationship? In this episode, I explore how generations of women have been taught—often without realizing it—to tie their worth to whether someone chooses them. Together, we'll examine where these beliefs come from, why they still affect us in midlife, and how we can finally write a new story. Because your worth has never depended on being chosen. It has always belonged to you. In This Episode We Discuss: The surprising connection between Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and modern women Why so many of us unconsciously tie our worth to relationships How culture quietly teaches women that being chosen equals being valuable Why intimacy begins with the relationship you have with yourself The difference between being desired and being worthy How choosing yourself creates healthier relationships Questions to help you rewrite the stories you've inherited about love, value, and intimacy
Chosen by Dave, and adapted by David Mamet from his Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play, Glengarry Glen Ross was directed by James Foley and assembled one of the most formidable acting line-ups of the 1990s: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce and Alec Baldwin. Made for an estimated $12.5 million, the film turns offices, restaurants and rain-soaked streets into a pressure cooker of desperation, ego and spectacularly aggressive salesmanship. Mamet reportedly received $1 million to adapt his own play, expanding the material specifically for the screen.Despite strong reviews, the film earned approximately $10.7 million at the North American box office and was not an immediate commercial success. Its reputation continued to grow through VHS, television and home-video releases, with Jack Lemmon winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and Al Pacino receiving Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. It is now regarded as a cult classic, particularly among actors, salespeople and anyone who has ever endured a motivational meeting conducted by someone who clearly despises them.Trailer Guy SynopsisIn a struggling Chicago real-estate office, four salesmen are fighting for their livelihoods.First prize is a Cadillac. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize… is unemployment. With the best leads locked away and the clock running down, every conversation becomes a contest, every customer becomes prey, and every colleague becomes a possible enemy. This week, closing the deal is not merely business. It is survival.Fun FactsDavid Mamet based the original play partly on his own experiences working in Chicago real-estate offices during the late 1960s.Alec Baldwin's character, Blake, does not appear in the original stage play. Mamet created him exclusively for the film adaptation.Baldwin appears in only one scene, yet his performance produced many of the film's most quoted lines and became a lasting part of sales culture. The famous “Always Be Closing” speech has been referenced and parodied in television shows, comedy sketches, advertising and corporate training sessions—sometimes by people who may have missed the fact that the scene is not exactly presenting healthy management advice. The movie's title refers to two fictional property developments: Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms.Al Pacino was the only member of the principal cast to receive an Oscar nomination, earning a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Ricky Roma.Jack Lemmon reportedly considered Shelley Levene one of his favourite roles, describing the character as someone who had once been successful but could no longer understand why his methods had stopped working.Jonathan Pryce's character, James Lingk, is the only significant male customer seen in the film, making his uncomfortable conversation with Roma one of the story's few glimpses outside the sales team's competitive world.Much of the cast had extensive theatrical experience, helping the dialogue-heavy production retain the rhythm, precision and intensity of a live stage performance.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. While we await the next installment of the 18Forty Podcast, we invite you to enjoy this episode from our serires 18 Questions, 40 Mystics. In this insightful conversation, Rabbi YY Jacobson presents Jewish mysticism as a dynamic framework for consciousness and connection rather than abstract theology. He passionately and clearly illustrates how faith and, ultimately, surrender can redefine how we see ourselves, our pain, and the world around us. Before the Lubavitcher Rabbi's passing, Rabbi Jacobson served as one of his oral scribes. As a close disciple of the Rabbi, he developed a strong foundation in the world of Chassidut [Hasidism] and Jewish mysticism. Now, Rabbi Jacobson is a world-renowned speaker and scholar. He now joins us to answer eighteen questions with Rabbi Dr. Benji Levy on Jewish mysticism including how Torah is the map of reality, how spirituality should inform your relationships, and the function of humility in religious growth. Here are our questions: What is Jewish mysticism? How were you introduced to Jewish mysticism? In an ideal world, would all Jews be mystics? What do you think of when you think of God?What is the purpose of the Jewish people? How does prayer work? What is the goal of Torah study?Does Jewish mysticism view men and women the same?Should Judaism be hard or easy? Why did God create the world? Can humans do something that is against God's will? What do you think of when you think about Moshiach? Is the State of Israel part of the final redemption? What is the greatest challenge facing the world today? How has modernity changed Jewish mysticism? What differentiates Jewish mysticism from the mysticism of other religions? Does one need to be religious to study Jewish mysticism? Can mysticism be dangerous? How has Jewish mysticism affected your relationships with yourself and with others? What is a Jewish teaching that you always take with you?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/18forty-podcast--4344730/support.
Today's episode of Gospel Spice, centered on the launch of "Awaken Delight," is a timely exploration of the Christian experience of suffering. Stephanie combines personal vulnerability—sharing excerpts from her new book about living with chronic pain and deep questions—with biblical wisdom on how hardship fits into our walk with God.In suffering, God does not abandon; he lovingly prunes and allows thorns for our growth. The path to deeper faith, humility, and delight in God runs directly through honest wrestling with pain—and leads to true spiritual fruitfulness.Christians often wonder: If I am serving God, why do I suffer? Is suffering a sign of God's displeasure or my failure? Stephanie shares that Christians who suffer yet trust God often appear as if they're not suffering—because they refuse let suffering have the final word. Our FREE gift to you today! An exclusive, in-depth 10-day FREE recovery plan to rekindle your delight in God when you are going through seasons of deep pruning from God's hand: go to https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelightthepodcast and find the form for Episode 454. Give us your email, and you will receive the full plan in your inbox immediately!Just as fig trees need hard soil to bear fruit, Christians grow most deeply in spiritually tough conditions. Comfort produces "leaves without fruit," but hardship develops true character and delight in God.In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul's incredible spiritual experiences led God to allow him a "thorn"—not as punishment, but to keep him humble and dependent on God. Paul's journey shows that deep suffering is not proof of failure or sin, but God's purposeful investment in our transformation. In John 15, Jesus says that healthy, fruitful branches are the ones pruned by the Gardener (God), so they'll bear even more fruit. Pruning feels like loss or reduction but is God re-focusing our lives on what truly matters.Pruning is when God removes something from our lives. It is the elimination of even good things for us to be more fruitful and focused. By contrast, thorns are when God allows painful weaknesses or situations to remain. These serve a specific, humbling, and formative purpose. Both types invite deeper dependence on God.We misunderstand suffering when we see it as divine punishment. Biblical teaching says it's part of God's commitment to us—not against us, but for us. The goal is not mere improvement, but transformation—making us more like Christ."Faith" is not something we muster by willpower, but a posture rooted in humility: recognizing our need for God and opening ourselves to His work. Humility is both the soil in which faith grows and the fruit that results from faith.Christ was not merely "pruned"—he was "cut off" entirely for our sake, taking on the ultimate suffering so we would never face it alone. Now, even our suffering is transformed by his presence and purpose.Practical ApplicationWhen hardship comes, instead of merely asking "Why me?" or "How can I escape this?", ask "What is God showing me?" and "How can I delight in Him through this?"Choose to see suffering not as a sign of God's absence, but as the attentive hand of the Gardener who loves and invests in us.Remain in Christ—even weak connection is connection, and transformation is always worth the pain.Reflective action: Next time you face loss or pain, remember the lessons of pruning and thorns. Ask God to help you trust His restorative, purposeful hand, and seek delight in Him above all.We are in the middle of our “Awaken Delight” series, based on Stephanie's new book. Each week, we explore a different facet of what makes delight in God difficult and challenging. How can we live the reality of Psalm 37:4 when life is hard? "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." This is God's promise to you in Psalm 37:4. But many believers quietly assume it's just a poetic suggestion, or it doesn't really work here on earth. What you will (re)discover as you journey with God through Awaken Delight:Delight in God is identity-shaping, not emotion-driven. Delight in God is not fleeting emotion but resilient identity.Delight in God is altogether trust, satisfaction in God, relational intimacy with Him.Delight in God is often expressed and grown through resilient joy under suffering.Delight in God is the missing engine behind resilience. It's the antidote to burnout. It's even the foundation for sustainable ministry.God's delight in you is secure, not performance-dependent. God's delight in you frees you from striving! That's the beginning of delight.Jesus is the center of every endeavor to delight in God.You can build a delight-centered spiritual life.Awaken Delight invites you to follow Scriptural truths and spiritual practices that cultivate daily joy in God.DISCOVER THE BOOK BEHIND THE PODCAST | "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4 isn't a poetic suggestion — it's a promise. But many believers quietly assume it doesn't really work, or it's not really possible here on earth. In Awaken Delight, Stephanie Rousselle invites you to rediscover what Scripture actually means by delight — not emotional hype, not religious performance, but a steady satisfaction rooted in who God is.Delight in God isn't a mood to manufacture; it's a relationship to receive.Through biblical theology and practical rhythms, you'll learn how communion with God reshapes suffering, quiets restless striving, and anchors your identity in something unshakable.Delighting in God isn't sentimental optimism. It's deeply rooted in Christ, Jesus. It's the quiet revolution that reshapes how we endure pain, love others, and understand our own heart.Awaken Delight is a theologically grounded spiritual formation book for thoughtful believers who feel spiritually fatigued and are ready to embrace the reality of Psalm 37:4.More at https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelight Purchase the book, "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle: https://a.co/d/0bqhUb5JKind words from Jennifer Rothschild, Bible teacher, Author, Speaker, Podcast Host, Founder, Fresh Grounded Faith: “Stephanie helps us awaken to and experience true delight. In 2010, Karen Yankovich sat in traffic on the Lincoln Tunnel Express for two hours a day, just to get to a job 15 miles from home. She built a business to escape that commute - and then, without realizing it, built a second one: posting every day, chasing hooks, chasing numbers before coffee and after midnight. In this episode, Karen shares the exact 20-minute visibility ritual that got her out of the second commute for good - and how it can do the same for you. This isn't about posting more. It's about a simple, three-part routine that turns LinkedIn visibility into real, paying relationships. Key takeaways: Why "constant" and "consistent" are not the same thing - and why chasing the wrong one burns you out The 20-minute expert visibility plan: tend your inbox, comment with intention, and send two warm opens Why a thoughtful comment is you "borrowing her stage" for 30 seconds Why your years of expertise make 20 minutes worth more than a beginner's four hours How to turn a single "seen" moment into being genuinely "known" by the people who matter If you're ready to stop performing and start building relationships that pay you back, hit subscribe and share this episode with a woman who needs to hear it. Resources Mentioned In The Episode: Borrow the Stage Masterclass: Karen's free training on how a borrowed stage becomes 20 minutes becomes a client, from Seen to Known to Chosen. LinkedIn for Women Community: Karen's free Facebook group where listeners post their weekly 20-minute windows for accountability. Work with Karen: Book a call to talk through your own visibility strategy. Magical Quotes From The Episode: "It doesn't have to be constant. It has to be consistent." "Seen is a moment. Peter presents the Christian life as custom masonry. He paints a picture of believers as living stones -- shaped by pressure, fitted by grace, and assembled with purpose. Horizon's facility echoes this image; its fieldstone exterior emphasizes that suffering is not waste but craftsmanship. As Christ-followers, our faith is built on Christ the Cornerstone, who creates us as his “Bespoke Stonework.” Join Horizon at the Equipping Services for this verse-by-verse study of 1 Peter, as we understand ourselves to be God's intentional, hand-hewn formations.

Help Is On The Way - Judges | Gideon's Chosen 300 | Pastor Chris Heller This Sunday we'll observe Gideon as he carefully carries out God's instructions for overcoming the Midianites. In spite of his fear and insecurities, he obediently gathers the unlikely battle weapons — trumpets, jars and torches — and distributes them to his meager army of 300 men. For most people, this sounds like a recipe for certain disaster. But Gideon's faith is growing, and he has learned that God can be trusted to do what He promised. Join us this week as we see the incredible things God accomplishes through those who simply trust and obey Him. #Renew #Judges #Rebel #motorcycle #sermon #sunday #onlinechurch

NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, there is no audio for the remaining ~10 minutes of the sermon, please refer to the PDF for the sermon notes) Beloved in Jesus Christ: Canons are the standards or rules God established in his Word. Canons are not big guns. Big guns are c-a-n-n-o-n-s. The Canons of Dort (Dordrecht was the place they were written) (1618-1619) are the standards the synod of the church organized regarding 5 major doctrines that were being attacked by false teachers after the Reformation. The one who corrupted these major doctrines (and so robbed the people of truth and robbed God of proper praise) was Jacob Arminius (1560-1609), a Dutchman. Arminius borrowed some ideas from Pelagius, a heretic of the 4th century, who did not believe, among other things, in original sin, predestination, or man's total estrangement from God. In short, Arminius minimized the greatness of God's salvation and robbed God of praise. With these same corrupted Arminian doctrines common today, even proliferating, you must be reminded of these standards so you don't fall prey to these errors, so you don't rob God of proper praise, and so you don't live fearful lives. The 1st doctrine in the Canons of Dort is the Unconditional Election of man. Our headings are: 1. Your Election Was Not Necessary 2. Your Election Was Based on God's Love 3. Your Election is Worked through Preaching Our goals are: That you will love that you are loved and chosen by Christ, that you will love him back, and share the message of his love so the elect might hear and believe.
