Professor of Environmental Politics, David Schlosberg is Director of the Sydney Environment Institute and joins the Wide Open Air Exchange this week for a discussion of global environmental governance on reflection of 50 years of World Environment Day. It was at the United Nations 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment (pictured) that the idea for World Environment Day was proposed and the following year on 5th June 1973 that it commenced as an annual day of public outreach. Professor Schlosberg remarks on how little has changed or been accomplished with regards to the same conflicts and tensions that were evident then continuing to be present fifty years later. This conversation also covers some of the developments with environmental movements and related discourses including reference to environmental justice which is a concept that Professor Schlosberg has been influential in defining and developing as a political and social theorist. We also hear about a more recent development in thinking about "multispecies justice" which Professor Schlosberg is engaged with in collaboration with a collective of researchers at the University of Sydney.

In June 1972, the UN came together in Stockholm to hold its first conference focusing on the environment. Now, 50 years later, the UN has convened an international, high level meeting in the Swedish capital to work towards a healthy planet. We speak to Jan Mårtensson, who was the Secretary-General of the Swedish national committee for the preparation of the Stockholm Conference in 1972, about what he believes politicians should be doing. And we also speak to Yoko Lu, a member of the Stockholm+50 Youth Task Force, about her expectations. And with Swedish elections just 100 days away, we hear about two political events, Järvaveckan and Almedalen, aimed at bringing politics closer to voters, as the campaigns heat up, and we also learn about the changing demographics of first-time voters. We hear about the long queues at Arlanda airport. And finally, if you've ever wondered what your rights are when you're enjoying the great outdoors in Sweden, look no further, as we speak to an expert, Nils Hallberg of the Environmental Protection Agency, on the right of public access.Reporter: Ulla EngbergProducer: Brett Ascarelli

United Nations creates World Environment Day. In response to growing concern about the planet’s sustainability, the United Nations held the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment from June 5 to 16, 1972. The conference concluded with a declaration that urged all nations to work for a better environment. The UN General Assembly also created the United Nations Environment Program, whose mission was “to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.” To commemorate that first conference, the United Nations created World Environment Day on June 5, 1972. Since then, numerous UN conferences on the environment have been held. However, each conference notes with increasing concern that not only has little progress been made, but environmental deterioration is accelerating rapidly. Many scientists believe climate change is the most serious threat facing the planet. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
