Few people have had a front-row seat to the genetic improvement of New Zealand sheep quite like our guest this week, Simon Buckley. After growing up in Whangārei and starting his farming career at Castlepoint Station, Simon joined Wairere Romneys and has never left. Four decades later, he has helped one of New Zealand's most influential sheep breeding programmes through the transition from visual selection and paper records to EID, genomics and data-driven breeding. In this episode, Simon chats with Mark to discuss the history of Wairere and the long-term thinking required to make meaningful genetic progress. They also discuss maternal instinct, breeding sheep for commercial conditions, the challenge of balancing innovation with market demand, and the lessons he's learnt from those who have travelled through the "University of Wairere".Grab a coffee and sit back and enjoy this one - it's a goodie! Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited. We help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. Episode NoteThe longitude was the easy part. For a century everyone knew the idea — carry a clock, compare it to local noon, read your position off the difference. Ships kept sinking anyway, because no clock could keep time at sea. The idea was free; the execution was impossible.John Harrison spent forty years tuning four machines until one lost five seconds crossing an ocean. He subtracted every source of error. He was forced to prove it, trial after hostile trial. And it was tested at sea, not asserted at the bench.Same idea a child could state. The entire difference was the tuning. Anyone can state the idea. As we recognized the high school and college graduates this year, our pastor gave a charge to them and to the rest of the congregation. Moses' life neatly divides into three forty-year segments. We are more familiar with the first forty years and the last forty. But in this message, we will look at the forty years Moses spent in Midian. It seemed like all hope was lost, but God was still on the move. He was developing Moses' character and preparing him for his destiny as the deliverer.

"How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?" The people weep all night, wish they had died in Egypt, and even talk of choosing a new leader to take them back. God's wrath burns hot, and only Moses' intercession spares them from immediate destruction. Yet the sentence is severe: forty years in the wilderness, one year for each day the spies explored. In this chapter, we see the terrible cost of unbelief and the mercy that preserves even a rebellious people.  The Rev. Steven Theiss, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells, MO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Numbers 14.  The Book of Numbers is far more than an ancient census report. It is the story of a people learning to trust God in the wilderness, and failing, and finding grace anyway.  In this series, host Pastor Phil Booe and guest pastors walk through the Old Testament book of Numbers chapter by chapter. We follow Israel from Sinai toward the Promised Land, through grumbling and rebellion, fiery serpents and a talking donkey, faithless spies and faithful priests. The journey is hard, the failures are many, and God remains faithful to a faithless people.  These ancient accounts point us to Christ. The bronze serpent lifted on a pole points to the cross. The rock struck for water points to the one struck for us. The high priest whose death frees the manslayer points to the Great High Priest whose death sets us free forever. Join us as we discover that the wilderness has more to teach us than we ever expected.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. She reflects on the man he was—a musician, philosopher, and deep thinker whose hands found truth at the piano—and the weight he carried in an era before vulnerability had language. Kaplan wrestles with childhood confusion about sin and punishment, ultimately arriving at a profound understanding: that people can be both radiant and struggling, that suffering doesn't diminish worth, and that love remains even when someone chooses to leave. Through her words, she offers her father what he couldn't give himself—permission to be human, flawed, and enough.
