Pittsburgh has a heightened stake in this year's Women's World Cup, as Gibsonia native and Pine-Richland High School graduate Meghan Klingenberg is a key member of Team USA. Joining host Matt Gajtka to discuss this is Hal Kaiser, who covers Klingenberg and the professional Houston Dash for the website Keeper Notes. Kaiser, who is currently in Canada for the World Cup, analyzes Klingenberg's role with the American team, which won its first match of the tournament earlier this week. Matt and Hal also go over the World Cup at large, especially Team USA's quest for its first trophy since 1999. Can they be considered the co-favorites, or has the rest of the world caught up to a degree that makes those expectations unrealistic?
(NOTE: We had some trouble bringing Josh aboard at the start. Feel free to skip ahead to the 5:00 mark for the interview.) DKonPittsburghSports.com reporter Josh Yohe joins City of Champions Radio host Matt Gajtka for an all-encompassing discussion on Pittsburgh's "Big Three" teams - the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers - in addition to the state of sports media today. Yohe, who previously worked the Pens beat for the Tribune-Review, discusses his new diverse role for Dejan Kovacevic's groundbreaking subscription-based website and the transition away from a "traditional" media company. City of Champions contributor and Pittsburgh Sporting News Pirates beat reporter Zac Weiss joins host Matt Gajtka for the newest episode of CoC Radio. Matt asks Zac about some of his features this year, and what his first two months on duty have been like. What's his feel on this team's ultimate potential? Who are some of the more intriguing personalities on the Bucs? How has having press access affected his understanding of the franchise and its component parts? Matt wraps up the interview with some rapid-fire topics on sports and the world at large.
It's once again time for some NHL hockey talk on City of Champions Radio, as host Matt Gajtka welcomes sports radio veteran Dan Kingerski to dig into the Stanley Cup playoffs and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dan is a current host on Pittsburgh's 93.7 The Fan, and he is the self-professed "hockey guy" at the all-sports-talk station. Matt picks Dan's brain on the four teams remaining and the current course of both conference final series. They also try to diagnose the Pens' rough end to the season and formulate ways to get the franchise back on track. Is it as simple as staying healthy? Or is there a deeper issue with the way the roster has been constructed?
Daniel Scifo, assistant sports editor of the Latrobe (Pa.) Bulletin, joins City of Champions Radio for the first time to talk about all things Pittsburgh. Also a freelancer for the Associated Press and USA Hockey, Scifo breaks down the Steelers' recent draft and their current trajectory with host Matt Gajtka. Following that, the guys address the stagnant Pirates and what might be ailing them in particular. Penguins talk wraps up the show, particularly what they might be up to during the second summer of the Johnston-Rutherford regime.
