Frank and Jason are back with another offseason edition of The DFO Rundown, and today's was a busy one. Earlier this morning, Frank broke the story that a new CBA is coming and he outlined all of the changes that are coming with that. The guys dug into all of that and Gregor said what he liked and didn't like about some of the new elements of the CBA, which will kick in for the 2026-27 season. Before they talked about that, they did discuss the massive deal that went down on Thursday night as the Buffalo Sabres sent JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. The deal seems a bit underwhelming on the surface and the guys talked about that. Frank also shared what some other options may have been for GM Kevyn Adams. They then really sunk their teeth into the new CBA and new massive changes that are coming, including new term limits, a closing of the LTIR loophole, and an 84-game regular season.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about the upcoming free agent class and the chances of a top ten pick getting moved in the 2025 NHL Draft. In the back half of the show, they did their offseason previews for the eight playoff teams in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens are apparently itching to make some big moves, but they're not alone. The Devils and Hurricanes are likely in that boat as well. The Leafs could also be a team that looks very different next season. The challenge for some of the other competitors like the Panthers, will be trying to dance around some cap challenges. They wrapped up the show with an announcement about the future of the podcast as Frank officially moves on from Daily Faceoff after this week.0:45 - Utah lands Peterka6:00 - What else was on the table for Buffalo?9:55 - The new CBA22:54 - Buy or Sell (Top 10 Free Agents, Penguins, Moving a Top 10 Pick)32:40 - Montreal Canadiens38:00 - New Jersey Devils42:10 - Ottawa Senators46:35 - Tampa Bay Lightning51:50 - Washington Capitals53:40 - Carolina Hurricanes55:25 - Toronto Maple Leafs57:50 - Florida PanthersWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. TK said snakes are his biggest fear and he used to have nightmares about them. Tyler said Brent Burns used to bring snakes on a plane (like the movie title) when he would travel. TK made a funny comparison to The Liver King, who went off the deep end a bit. The Penguins hold the 11th and 12th picks in the NHL Draft this weekend – what should their plan be? Tyler wants to see the team sit back and make those picks then worry about that high pick next year. He said unless there is someone high up on their radar, there's no reason to jump up. TK got into what the Penguins are missing right now and what they could look for in free agency. TK went back to the sandpaper well and said the Pens need to add some. TK reacted to the Panthers winning another Stanley Cup. Will Erik Karlsson be back next season? Tyler labeled Evander Kane as a ‘cancer' as he was part of a deal earlier today.
Oneil Cruz was taken out of the game late last night due to lack of hustle. We applauded the move by Don Kelly, saying it's something we would not have seen from Derek Shelton. It's a good sign to show accountability. We talked about how it would have been pretty easy to sit Cruz again today due to his plate approach for the last month or so. Chris is annoyed that we are still doing this with Cruz this far into his career. Former MLB pitcher and Butler boys' basketball coach Matt Clement joined the show. As someone who knows plenty about WPIAL hoops, Matt talked about TJ McConnell and the presence he had in the NBA Finals. Matt brought up a player that he had going to Duquesne around the same time TJ was on his way to Arizona. Matt said TJ has become a cult hero everywhere he goes because he's not supposed to be THIS good. Switching to baseball, Matt said there are very few players in MLB he would take over Paul Skenes. He compared Skenes to Mark Prior, who he played with in Chicago, but described him as a ‘step up' from Prior. Matt said what Skenes is doing is unlike anything we've seen before because the game has not gotten faster for him like it should have. How does Matt think the Pirates can get things jumpstarted more for Oneil Cruz and is it frustrating that we are still seeing mental errors from him? Matt said they need to be patient with Cruz even if it wears off a bit with each mistake. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. Dimitri Filipovic is joined by Steve Werier to discuss how the rising cap affects the decision making process for teams, the ways it'll manifest in the first wave this summer, the opportunity cost of going bridge vs. long-term with RFAs, the pros vs. cons of Marner going 2-3 years on his next deal, and next steps for rebuilding teams like the Ducks, Sharks, and Penguins. Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise explains why he feels the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates can all learn valuable lessons from the Oklahoma City Thunder's run to an NBA championship this season. For the Steelers, he looks at the Thunder's willingness to deal star Paul George in exchange for current stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and wonders if GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin should be more willing to part with names like T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward in pursuit of draft capital. On the Penguins front, he feels GM Kyle Dubas could benefit from a willingness to move on from Stanley Cup winners like Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. And with regard to the Pirates, he sees a need for greater player development than the club has demonstrated under GM Ben Cherington.
