Dr. Alan Garfinkel talks with archaeologist Robert Yohe about their long collaboration and new insights from Yohe's work at the Rose Spring site. Yohe describes using many radiocarbon dates from a deep, stratified deposit to refine local chronology and estimate the bow-and-arrow's introduction around 1,600 years ago, along with a rare ritual feature involving a bighorn sheep skull. They also discuss challenges and progress in dating rock art, including AMS radiocarbon dating of a South Fork Kern River painting to about 1,000 years old, and Yohe previews a major upcoming Rose Spring monograph that revises earlier views on subsistence, settlement, and stone tool reuse. It Happened To Me: A Rare Disease and Medical Challenges Podcast

In this episode of It Happened To Me, we explore clinical neurology, how the brain and nervous system function, what happens when things go wrong, and how recovery and adaptation are possible even after injury or chronic neurological challenges. Our guest is Dr. David Traster, a clinical neurologist and educator who has spent nearly two decades working with patients experiencing complex neurological conditions. His background as an athlete and personal trainer, combined with his own experiences navigating injury and chronic health issues, shaped his interest in helping people improve function through neurological recovery. Dr. Traster has advanced training in concussion, dizziness and vertigo, movement disorders, autonomic nervous system conditions, and childhood developmental disorders. His work focuses on helping patients improve function through neurorehabilitation and targeted exercises, without relying solely on drugs or surgery. In Part 1 of this conversation, Dr. Traster explains what clinical neurology really means and how it differs from the traditional view of neurology as diagnosis, medication, or surgery alone. He shares his own experience as a high-level basketball player whose life changed after a surgery led to years of unexplained symptoms, eventually resulting in a Lyme disease diagnosis. That personal journey shaped how he listens to patients whose symptoms do not fit neatly into a diagnosis. The conversation also explores how the brain responds to injury, including concussion and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Traster explains why recovery often requires more than rest and time, and how targeted exercises involving vision, balance, eye movement, vestibular rehabilitation, and cognitive therapy can help retrain specific brain pathways. Cathy and Dr. Traster also discuss how this approach may apply to patients living with rare or genetic conditions. While neurorehabilitation may not cure an underlying condition, Dr. Traster explains that improving function, balance, movement, and quality of life can still be meaningful and powerful for patients. Dr. Traster also provides a clear explanation of neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change, strengthen, and reorganize through repeated activity. Dr. Traster breaks down why “brain cells that fire together wire together,” and how learning, movement, repetition, and targeted practice can support healing and adaptation. In This Episode, We Discuss: What clinical neurology is and how it differs from traditional neurology Why the brain may need functional and physics-based approaches, not only chemical interventions Dr. Traster's personal experience with chronic illness, delayed diagnosis, and Lyme disease How being dismissed medically shaped his empathy for patients Why neurological symptoms like dizziness, brain fog, and balance issues can be misunderstood How concussion recovery can involve targeted brain rehabilitation The role of vision, balance, vestibular rehab, eye movement therapy, and cognitive exercises How neurorehabilitation may support patients with genetic or rare conditions Why function and quality of life matter, even when a condition cannot be cured What neuroplasticity means in simple terms How learning, repetition, and practice help strengthen brain connections About Dr. David Traster Dr. David Traster is a clinical neurologist and educator with nearly two decades of experience working with patients experiencing complex neurological conditions. LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 14, 2026) – [THIS IS AN ENCORE PRESENTATION.] What does it mean to "reckon" with the past — not as a distant record, but as a living force that still shapes our communities, our classrooms and our shared civic life? Kristine Yohe, a professor of English at Northern Kentucky University, explores that question in her new book, "Reckoning with the Past: The Historical Poetry of Frank X Walker" — a thoughtful, book-length study of Walker's historical persona poetry. In that work, Walker gives voice to pivotal figures such as York, Isaac Murphy and Medgar Evers, inviting readers to engage history with honesty, empathy and deeper context.   Walker, a UK professor, poet, and the first African American writer to be named Kentucky Poet Laureate, says historical persona poetry can put readers "on the inside of the story," bringing an emotional truth that traditional accounts often can't capture. And while most people won't sit down with "the 300-page version" of history, he belives poetry can invite them in — because "the truth is the grand sum of all those points of view where everybody gets heard." On this episode of 'Behind the Blue', Yohe and Walker discuss the book, what it means to "reckon" with the past, and why literature can help communities confront both the good and the painful realities that shape the American story. The conversation also explores how Yohe and Walker bring this work into the classroom — what surprises students most when they encounter these histories for the first time, and how research, imagination and craft can help students build empathy, sharpen critical thinking and better understand the relationship between past and present. Send me a messageIn this week's episode of the Climate Confident Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Gary Yohe, one of the world's leading climate economists, long-time IPCC author, and a member of the Nobel Peace Prize, winning IPCC team of 2007. Gary has spent over four decades shaping how we understand climate change, not just as an environmental issue, but as a fundamental risk management challenge. We explore his powerful framework: abate, adapt, or suffer. These are, he argues, the only three choices humanity has left, and crucially, some level of suffering is now unavoidable. Mitigation slows the pace of warming, adaptation reduces impacts, but neither can eliminate all risks. The insurance crisis unfolding in California and beyond shows what happens when climate risks become uninsurable, raising the threat of financial instability on a global scale.Gary also reminds us that climate decisions must be iterative. Policies cannot be fixed for 100 years; they must evolve as science, technology, and risk tolerance change. He illustrates this with striking examples, from New York's evacuation planning after Hurricane Sandy to San Francisco's flexible approach to sea-level rise.Yet, despite the scale of the challenge, Gary insists on hope, not blind optimism, but the conviction, as Václav Havel wrote, that action makes sense regardless of outcome. It's this perspective that has kept him, and many others, working relentlessly on solutions for over 40 years. If you want to understand why climate change is ultimately a risk management problem, why insurance, finance, and resilience are inseparable, and why hope is a strategy we can't do without, this episode is essential listening.Podcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing subscribers: Ben Gross Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Subscribe to the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one, as well as give you access to the entire back catalog of Climate Confident episodes.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. Greetings, Manlihood ManCast listeners! In today's episode, we have a unique and inspiring guest joining us, someone who's not just a barber but also a passionate story collector. Let's introduce you to Tate Yohe, the owner/barber of Neibert's Barbershop in Mechanicsburg, PA.Brief Bio Introduction:Tate Yohe's journey as a barber is more than just about cutting hair; it's about building connections and preserving stories. He owns and operates Neibert's Barbershop in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where he's created something truly special.Drawing from his 14 years of experience in emergency services, Tate initially hung his patch and badge on the wall as a tribute to his past. This simple act led to the creation of a unique "patch wall."Former colleagues from his time in emergency services and military clients started coming in for haircuts and adding their patches to the wall. What emerged was a tapestry of stories—stories from the front lines, deployments, moments of triumph, and even moments of loss.Tate recognized the power of these stories and the need to share them with a broader audience. Thus, he embarked on a mission to bring you inside the barbershop and offer a glimpse into the lives of the individuals whose patches adorn the shop's walls. To connect with Tate Yohe and explore his work further, visit the following URLs:Tate Yohe's LinktreeTate's Book - "First Line of Defense: Life as an EMT"Chairapy Sessions on YouTubeDon't miss this enlightening episode of the Manlihood ManCast as we dive into the world of storytelling through patches with Tate Yohe, a barber who is not only grooming hair but also preserving incredible stories. Tom Yohe (Hope For Hurting Parents) has returned for a 2nd interview on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast to discuss his new book called “Moments of Clarity: Wisdom from the Father of a Prodigal”. Yes, Tom and Dena Yohe have been on this podcast before! You can hear more of their story on episode 50 of Youth Worker On Fire Podcast and all about Renee Yohe, their daughter. As well as, a group that started a movement around her story called “To Write Love On Her Arms”. Tom Yohe and his wife Dena Yohe started on this journey when their middle daughter at age 12 started cutting herself. Tom was a pastor at the time. They thought they had everything under control by the time she entered high school. Tom and Dena felt led to join Campus Crusade For Christ (CRU) as staff. They moved their family to Russia for a missions project and not long after, found that their daughter's problems had gotten worse instead of better. They left the mission field and came back to the United States of America, so their daughter could have more therapy and this time it included the parents as well. This episode with Tom will help you even more and his book will be a tool for many parents, youth pastors, educators, and the list goes on and on! For years after their daughter graduated high school, the nightmare continued and for many years as parents they felt lost and not sure what to do next.  Tom fills in the blanks of how his family found help through pain and suffering and how you can too. Treatment programs, relapsing, and how the journey continues. Through it all, God is still faithful even through the guilt, embarrassment, and isolation. So listen in to see how that could possibly change after all these years!
