Tread Perilously's WandaVision month continues with an episode of Malcolm in the Middle called "Living Will." “[David Joy]is a man who sees his homeplace clearly and who writes like his hand was touched by God.” — The New York Times Novelist and essayist David Joy is a tall, lean and red-bearded denizen of the hollers, mountain tops and ridges of Jackson County, North Carolina. He is an obsessive turkey, deer and squirrel hunter, a fisherman who wrote his first published book on fly fishing but who is equally at home running live baits for big flathead catfish on Piedmont rivers. He is on the very short list of great American fiction writers and essayists who hunt and fish and speak for public lands and conservation as naturally as they breathe or write. This podcast was recorded at David's cabin near Little Canada, North Carolina, after a long hike in the Pisgah National Forest to scout new hunting country, in the good company of David's little feist dog, Edie Munster. Listeners who love David's stark and hyper-realistic style of writing, and his oft-times harrowing and unsettling novels, will love when Hal and David talk writing and story after a deep dive on turkey calls and turkey hunting. Send us a textCan fish learn to outsmart us? In this fascinating episode of Doc Talks Fishing, we sit down with Dr. Hal Schramm-legendary bass biologist, pioneering researcher, and inductee into the National Fisheries Management Hall of Excellence— to explore the cutting-edge science of fish learning and conditioning. Hal shares eye-opening research showing that bass—and likely other species— can actually learn to avoid lures, boats and fishing pressure after being caught and released. It's a provocative twist: thanks to slot limits, selective harvest, and catch-and-release, bass populations are booming in many lakes. But despite healthy numbers, many anglers are noticing tougher bites and lower catch rates. Are the fish still there-but now too smart to bite? Join us as Hal breaks down the science of fish behaviour, explains how and why fish get conditioned, and offers practical advice on how anglers can outthink these educated fish. If you've ever wondered why yesterday's hot bait suddenly stopped working—this episode is for you.

Send us a textWhat happens when a pastor of 20 years realizes he was never truly saved? Hal Selby's powerful testimony reveals the transformative journey from secret sin to authentic freedom that began with a startling revelation while preparing a sermon on Cain and Abel. For decades, Hal lived a double life - preaching from the pulpit while secretly struggling with same-sex attraction. Satan had convinced him that if anyone discovered his secret, he would lose everything - his wife, family, ministry, and calling. The weight of this deception created a cycle of acting out, self-hatred, and desperate pleas for forgiveness that never brought lasting peace. The turning point came when God showed Hal that despite his seminary degrees and successful ministry, he had never truly been born again. After his genuine conversion experience, Hal faced the terrifying prospect of telling his wife about his hidden struggles. Her response was nothing short of miraculous: "I forgive you and I'm not leaving." Though their journey wasn't easy, requiring counseling and tremendous emotional work, their marriage not only survived but eventually thrived.Today, Hal and Lisa lead Refuge461, a ministry offering help and hope to those impacted by homosexuality. Their work embodies the beautiful paradox of Christian redemption - that our greatest struggles can become our most powerful ministry opportunities when surrendered to God. As Hal explains, "I'm not trying to get free from homosexuality. When I got saved, Jesus freed me from the bondage of sin. I'm learning now to live in the freedom that is already mine in Christ."Whether you're battling secret sin, questioning the authenticity of your faith, or supporting someone who is, this episode offers three transformative truths: grace is God's unearned favor, forgiveness in Christ is total and complete, and true freedom means no longer being defined by your past. Ready to experience this freedom? It begins with bringing everything into the light. If you would like to be a guest and share your story, click this link: https://thepromoter.org/story/ Thanks for Listening, and subscribe to hear a new episode each week!

During COVID, corporations blamed supply chain shocks for rising prices while quietly raising prices higher than costs, thereby boosting their profits to record levels. We know they did this because they bragged about doing it on corporate earnings calls. Economist Hal Singer warns that Trump's proposed tariffs could spark a repeat, giving corporations another “golden opportunity” to jack up prices under the guise of higher costs. He explains why tools like antitrust enforcement and interest rate hikes aren't enough to stop price gouging—and why failing to curb greedflation could carry a steep political price. Hal Singer is an economist, antitrust expert, and Managing Director at Econ One Research, where he specializes in competition policy, regulatory economics, and consumer protection. He's a professor at the University of Utah and a leading voice on market power, price gouging, and the intersection of antitrust and inequality. Konkláve v rozhovoru přirovnává k reality show: „Je to exotická, tajemná, esteticky fascinující a historií prosycená událost, která v sobě nese něco transcendentního. Je to atraktivní i pro lidi, kteří stojí mimo církev, pro mě potom dvojnásob,“ směje se. A všímá si i reakce zvenčí: „Trump z něj velkou radost nemá – prezidentovi odpůrci v něm totiž vidí světový symbol Ameriky.“ Jak se bude Lev XIV. angažovat v mírových snahách na Ukrajině? Jaký boj se odehrává uvnitř církve? A co Halíkovi napsal v osobním dopise papež František? Podívejte se na celý rozhovor.

But sometimes I just need a little extra testimony to convince me that things are as they present themselves. And that's not a bad thing. Today we'll discuss how to get confirmation of our eternal destiny; how God's claims are even more outrageous than those of a professional athlete – and that's saying something; how God speaks to us to tell us we're on the right track (or not); and the risks we take in games and in life when we take people at their word.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. Episode 168:Although Shakespeare's completion of the events of Henry IV's reign is very much a continuation of the story from part one it is a play with a very different vibe. The vigour of the battle scenes and the exuberance of prince Hal and Falstaff's relationship are replaced in part two with a more sombre and elegiac tone. The effects of old age and the passing to time hang over the play and even at its ending, where the coronation of Henry V could have been treated as a big party full of hope, it is the final rejection of Falstaff that dominates as once again Shakespeare provides an ending that many would have found surprising. The dating of the playThe early publishing history of the playThe early performance history of the playShakespeare's sources for the playA Synopsis of the plotHow the play functions without much dramatic actionWas the play a hurriedly written sequel?Foreshadowing and references to historyThe presence of the king and his illness in the playThe nature of the comedy in the playThe final split with FalstaffFalstaff the dangerous conmanThe Justices Shallow and SilenceMistress Quickly and the other comic charactersThe EpilogueSupport the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. And a huge welcome back to Hal, contributer of wonderful reviews at the official Talking Pictures Podcast as well as host of his very own show Couple Indemnity. Hold onto your snorkels! In Thunderball, suave spy James Bond jets off to the sun-drenched Bahamas. Why the holiday? Because the villainous, eye-patch-wearing Largo of SPECTRE has pinched two atomic bombs and is holding the world to ransom! 007 must navigate treacherous waters, both literally and figuratively, charming allies like the stunning Domino while dodging Largo's aquatic thugs. Get ready for thrilling underwater battles, cool gadgets, and Bond proving that even a nuclear crisis can't cramp his impeccable style. It's a high-stakes game of global poker, and Bond's all-in! Thunderball(1965) In 1965's Thunderball, James Bond, played with maximum cool by Sean Connery, finds himself in a pickle when the notoriously nasty organization SPECTRE, specifically their number two main man, the delightfully devious and eye-patch-sporting Emilio Largo, makes off with two atomic bombs. Their asking price for not reducing a major city to a fine powder? A cool £100 million in diamonds. Naturally, Her Majesty's Secret Service dispatches their best man, 007, who, after a rather explosive pre-title sequence involving a man in drag and a handy jetpack, tracks the villainy to the vibrant, sun-drenched Bahamas. Bond's mission quickly turns into a tropical tango of espionage. He crosses paths with the alluring Domino, who just happens to be Largo's mistress, and the fiery SPECTRE operative Fiona Volpe, who prefers lethal motorcycles to leisurely strolls. Armed with Q's latest toys – including gadgets perfect for underwater shenanigans – Bond dives headfirst into Largo's world, which is, conveniently, based around a superyacht and a rather shark-infested estate. The film culminates in an absolutely bonkers underwater battle royale, proving that fisticuffs are just as effective below the waves as they are on dry land. With the fate of a major city hanging in the balance, Bond and his newfound allies engage in a fin-tastic clash against Largo's scuba-equipped forces. Will Bond recover the bombs, get the girl, and deliver a perfect one-liner before the credits roll? You know the answer, but the fun is in watching him do it with effortless charm and a never-ending supply of air tanks! "My dear girl, don't flatter yourself. What I did this evening was for King and country. You don't think it gave me any pleasure, do you?" Today's poem is one of the few enduring works of a poet and playwright who burned brightly during his heyday and then blinked out almost entirely. Happy reading.Leigh, son of James Mathews Leigh, was born in London on 29 March 1837. At an early age he engaged in literary pursuits. From time to time appeared collections of his lyrics, under the titles of Carols of Cockayne, 1869 (several editions); Gillott and Goosequill, 1871; A Town Garland: a Collection of Lyrics, 1878; and Strains from the Strand: Trifles in Verse, 1882. His verse was always fluent, but otherwise of very slender merit. For the stage he translated many French comic operas. His first theatrical essay was in collaboration with Charles Millward in a musical spectacle for the Theatre Royal in Birmingham. His ‘Falsacappa,' music by Offenbach, was produced at the Globe Theatre on 22 April 1871; ‘Le Roi Carotte' at the Alhambra on 3 June 1872; ‘Bridge of Sighs,' opera-bouffe, at the St. James's, 18 Nov. 1872; ‘White Cat,' a fairy spectacle, at the Queen's, Long Acre, on 2 Dec. 1875; ‘Voyage dans la Lune,' opera-bouffe, at the Alhambra, on 15 April 1876; ‘Fatinitza,' opera-bouffe (the words were printed), adapted from the German, at the Alhambra on 20 June 1878; ‘The Great Casimir,' a vaudeville, at the Gaiety, on 27 Sept. 1879; ‘Cinderella,' an opera, with music by J. Farmer, at St. James's Hall, on 2 May 1884 (the words were published in 1882); ‘The Brigands,' by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy, adapted to English words by Leigh, was printed in 1884. For ‘Lurette,' a comic opera, Avenue, 24 March 1883, he wrote the lyrics; and with Robert Reece he produced ‘La Petite Mademoiselle,' comic opera, Alhambra, on 6 October 1879. He edited ‘Jeux d'Esprit written and spoken by French and English Wits and Humorists,' in 1877, and wrote Mark Twain's ‘Nightmares' in 1878.His last theatrical venture—a complete failure—was ‘The Prince Methusalem,' a comic opera, brought out at the Folies Dramatiques (now the Kingsway), Great Queen Street, London, on 19 May 1883. He was a Spanish, Portuguese, and French scholar, a brilliant and witty conversationalist, and a humorous singer. He died in his rooms in Lowther's private hotel, 35 Strand, London, on 16 June 1883, and was buried in Brompton cemetery on 22 June.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. The conversation underscores the role of the church in guiding multi-generational interactions.Grandchildren play a huge role in our lives as grandparents. Send us a textAs we age, living with and influencing our adult children is a huge theme in life. In this podcast, listen to Hal as he interviews well-known psychologist, Dr. Ken Wilgus about life with adult children. Ken has written an exceptional book entitled, Feeding the Mouth That Bites You, and while Ken's book focuses on the adolescent years, the principles he shares are timeless and critically important in the years we share with our adult children.Dr. Hal Habecker and Ken Wilgus discuss the challenges of parenting adult children and the concept of planned emancipation. Ken emphasizes the cultural shift in how children transition to adulthood, noting the lack of a universally agreed-upon method. He highlights the importance of signaling to children that they are seen as adults and respecting their choices. They also touch on the impact of cultural changes, such as expressive individualism, on identity and the isolation it creates. Dr. Habecker stresses the need for Christians to live strong adult lives and encourage their children spiritually, using personal stories and experiences rather than lectures.-----Dr. Wilgus has been a practicing psychologist for over thirty years. Public lands and waters have risen to the forefront of hunter-angler issues in 2025, from Utah's attempted steal of 18.5 million acres of land owned by us all and managed by the Bureau of Land Management to divestment and sale of public lands being floated in Congress and the shrinking of the Federal workforce charged with overseeing the health of our shared resources. The daily flow of information has been a constant -- one that's hard to keep up with. In this special episode of the Podcast & Blast, Hal sits down with BHA President and CEO Patrick Berry and Director of Government Relations Kaden McArthur to sort through the maze and learn what's really going on.
