In this special edition of None But The Brave, co-hosts Hal Schwartz and Flynn McLean discuss Bruce Springsteen's surprise release of a protest song, Streets Of Minneapolis, that he was inspired to write in the past few days following the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis. Hal and Flynn break down the song, which harshly criticizes President Trump and ICE, and talk about how it continues Bruce's long history of political activism. My guest on this episode is just down the Texan road from me, Hal Rose. Hal first hunted South Africa back in 1994 and only returned some twenty years later. Well, as Hal will re-tell, the African bug bit him harder on his second trip and since then he has planned on returning to hunt this beautiful land every year since. Hal shares some great stories across his 3 trips to South Africa, from Kwa-Zulu Natal, to Limpopo and down to the Eastern Cape. He also shares some great advice for those new hunters, looking at hunting Africa. If you would like to reach out to Hal and talk about hunting or maybe even get some feedback on an outfitter you are looking at, then you can reach him via email on: halrose01@gmail.com Hey, do me a favor? If you are enjoying these episodes, then please leave a 5* rating and review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. It don't cost anything and only takes 2 seconds. Thanks!

We'll deal with both extremes this week – the experiences that draw us closer to God spiritually if not physically; the alternative “highs” that may interfere with bigger purposes; the mountains God moves for us, as opposed to the ones He asks us to climb; and the annoyances that come with building a stack of game pieces that reach all the way to heaven.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. Why do we procrastinate, overspend, or neglect habits we know matter? In this episode, UCLA professor Hal Hershfield reveals how our connection (or lack of connection) to our future selves shapes everything from health and finances to ethics and life satisfaction. Drawing on decades of research, Hal introduces practical tools—including reverse time travel, temptation bundling, and vivid imagination exercises—that help close the gap between intention and action. This conversation is equal parts science, story, and strategy for anyone who wants to live with more agency and hope.Memorable Quotes“It involves thinking about trade-offs between now and later, and thinking about sort of balancing out our happiness and our satisfaction over time between the version of us who exists right now and the version of us who exist in the future.”“People change, and we change much more than we expect to. And the reason I think that that's not something to fear is because it means that we have some control over our lives. It means that we can become different versions of us, we can change aspects of ourselves.”“It may be scary at first to recognize that my life could look different in 10 years than I expect it to be. But the reality that we know from decades of research is that as a human being, we're quite good with grappling with change. We're quite resilient. We have a healthy, what's called ‘psychological immune system,' which basically means we can sort of fend off the changes that we don't want and sort of learn to live with the way that life has become.”“What the research has found is that if we make the process of achieving a goal more fun, more enjoyable, more pleasurable, we're just—and this shouldn't surprise anybody—we're a lot more likely to stick it out.”“If we want to spur action, if we wanna take some agency, we not only need to think about the way that we want things to look differently, but we also need to figure out what's the contrast between now and later? And what are the—and this is really important—what are the overcomeable obstacles?”“There's lots of little things where we can cut corners and, you know, we get some gain in the present, but we might get punished in the future. And what we've found in several papers is that the people who feel connected to their future selves are actually more likely to, to take this sort of more difficult but ethical path.”“That's the irony of procrastination. It hurts while we're procrastinating. It hurts after we procrastinated too…[We can instead think] ‘I don't wanna do it now. There's a good chance I'm not gonna wanna do it in the future, so I might as well just do it now.' Just do it and eliminate all that feeling of negativity along the way.”“We can take anything that feels like it's painful, unpleasant, et cetera, and pair it with something that's a temptation.”Key TakeawaysYou Have Agency. Paul McCarthy walks through Halliburton's (HAL) earnings. He highlights “good” numbers overseas and their struggle in the U.S. market. Guidance was a “big negative” as they lowered revenue expectations. Possible involvement in Venezuela is a story for 2027 and beyond, he adds. “The company is stable to sideways,” he says, with the bright spots coming from international markets. He sees the stock as overbought and thinks we could be seeing a “last push higher” before consolidation.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. We'll cover what if anything immigration policies in Jesus's day have to do with us; the nature of nationalism and how it crosses geographical and cultural boundaries; whether Jesus is for or against building walls (yes, there is an answer); and what actually gives you the right to cross over from one kingdom to another, both in games and in the gospel. In this episode, Michael Blank sits down with Hal Elrod, bestselling author of The Miracle Morning, to talk about habits, mindset, and resilience. Hal shares how a near-fatal car accident, cancer, and financial collapse reshaped his philosophy on success—and why personal development is the foundation of financial freedom. This conversation explores how investors can use intentional daily routines to build clarity, discipline, and long-term fulfillment both in business and in life.Key Takeaways Morning routines shape long-term success — how you start the day determines focus, energy, and results.Adversity is neutral — meaning comes from the perspective you choose, not the circumstance itself.Personal development is non-negotiable — investing in yourself accelerates every other area of life.Small daily habits compound over time, creating massive long-term impact.Success without fulfillment is failure — aligning goals with purpose matters more than achievement alone.Consistency beats intensity — sustainable routines outperform short-lived motivation.Connect with MichaelFacebookInstagramYouTubeTikTokResourcesTheFreedomPodcast.com Access the #1 FREE Apartment Investing Course (Apartments 101)Schedule a Free Strategy Session with Michael's Team of AdvisorsExplore Michael's Mentoring ProgramJoin the Nighthawk Equity Investor ClubReview the Podcast on Apple PodcastsSyndicated Deal AnalyzerGet the Book, Financial Freedom with Real Estate Investing by Michael Blank For full episode show notes visit: https://themichaelblank.com/podcasts/session507/

We talked about the seasons that shaped us, the moments that forced us to rebuild from the inside out, and the mindset required to keep showing up when motivation fades. Hal shared powerful insights on discipline, purpose, and choosing how you respond when life tests you, and I opened up about lessons I've learned through setbacks, self-reflection, and protecting my peace. This episode is for anyone who feels like they're in the middle of the process. You're not behind. You're being built. Keep going. Your story is still unfolding.
Guest Hal Herring is a long-time contributing editor and writer at Field and Stream magazine and has covered conservation and the environment for national and international publications for almost thirty years. His work was featured in the Patagonia documentary Public Trust in 2020, and he is at work on a book about the American public lands. Summary In this episode of Getting Unstuck: Cultivating Curiosity, Jeff speaks with writer and public-lands advocate Hal H. about renewed political efforts to weaken protections for America's public lands. The conversation centers on three major flashpoints: Senator Mike Lee's failed attempt to sell off federal lands under the guise of affordable housing, the Department of Agriculture's proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule, and a quieter movement to transfer federal public lands to state control. Hal explains how these efforts fit into a long historical pattern of privatization attempts, driven by ideology and commercial interests rather than public benefit. He walks through why the Roadless Rule was created—highlighting watershed protection, crumbling road infrastructure, wildfire risk, and taxpayer cost—and why the evidence overwhelmingly supports keeping it in place. Throughout the discussion, Hal emphasizes that public lands are a uniquely American idea, central to clean water, wildlife, recreation, and democratic access. The episode closes with a reminder that public voice matters: citizen pressure has stopped land grabs before, and continued vigilance is essential to protect lands held in common for future generations. The three takeaways Efforts to sell, develop, or transfer public lands are not new—they are part of a long-running campaign to privatize shared resources. The Roadless Rule protects watersheds, wildlife, and taxpayers by limiting costly, damaging road construction that agencies cannot maintain. Public lands endure only when citizens actively defend them; public pressure has proven effective in stopping harmful policies. References / Links Hal's website

This week we'll discuss the monument Samuel left and how it has inspired hymn singers and preachers for decades; a president who chose no memorial at all over one made under false pretenses; one of the most famous landscapes in film and how it stays the same year after year; and the monument you can build on your game table and in your own life.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. Tex writes "I am currently serving in the United States Army as an Airborne Infantry soldier with the 82nd Brigade, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Growing up, I had several strange experiences in the woods moments that didn't make sense at the time but, looking back now, could very well be connected to Bigfoot or Sasquatch. My most significant encounter, however, occurred in January of 2025 during a field training exercise with my basic training company at Fort Benning, Georgia. What happened wasn't a single sighting, but encounters with what I believe were three separate beings possibly a small family group of Sasquatch inhabiting the forested outer edge of the base. I'd heard plenty of stories about unusual activity on Fort Benning and other military installations, but I never imagined something like this would happen to me especially not with a witness alongside me. During one night in our patrol base, we had contact with two large entities. We fired blank rounds, and things quickly escalated into complete chaos. The following day, while conducting a patrol as a two man team, my buddy Hal and I encountered something large, upright, and covered in shaggy dark reddish-brown hair. It was partially concealed behind a tree at our 10 o'clock position, approximately 50 meters away, watching us as we slowly backed toward our patrol base. We both knew exactly what we had seen. We agreed not to say anything to the rest of the squad at least until our Drill Sergeants called us in for a serious, in-depth conversation. Some of the things they said and implied made it feel as though they already knew what was out there and wanted the incident kept quiet. I would be more than willing to speak with you further about this experience, and it would be an honor to be on the show."

It was the late spring of 1932 when Idaho outfitter Jim Renshaw first saw the upper Selway River from the back of a horse. The packstring was led by his father, Alvin, who had been working for the U.S. Forest Service since he was 13 and had bought the Pettibone Ranch, deep in the wilderness, where Bear Creek drops into the Selway River. Jim Renshaw was two months old at that time. For the next 16 years, he, his mother and father, and two sisters lived at the Pettibone Ranch, guiding hunters in the fall and fishermen and wilderness wanderers in the summer. Jim would become one of the most famed and skilled horsemen and wilderness mule packers in the history of the Selway country, as well as an elk and mule deer guide with few equals. Today, at age 93, he remains actively engaged with his horses and mules and in his home wilderness country. This interview was recorded live at Jim's home near Kooskia, Idaho, during a visit in June 2025. The stories kept coming, the maps stayed on the table, and the coffee remained on the stove for the better part of two days. Hal was able to capture much of it in this podcast episode—nine decades of weather and work, triumph and tragedy, wildlife and even wilder people, family, camps, crashed planes, and horse wrecks—a life writ large in some of the finest and most remote country left on Earth.

Since wrapping her 137-episode run on Riverdale about two years ago, Lili Reinhart's been determined to craft a filmography with intention. As she noted during our Collider Ladies Night conversation, she's always been picky about the work she takes on, but in this next stage of her career, her time on Riverdale is giving her the opportunity to say no and only do films and shows “that make sense or speak to me in certain ways,” and she's going to take it.Thus far, that mentality is working in Reinhart's favor big time. This year she celebrated the release of American Sweatshop, a wildly intense and deeply chilling tale of a social media moderator responsible for ridding the internet of the most offensive content, and the toll that job takes on her. That movie, which features a exceptional lead performance from Reinhart is available to buy or rent on digital platforms. Next year the one to keep an eye on is Forbidden Fruits, in which Reinhart plays Apple, the leader of a coven called The Fruits that operates out of a Free People-like store in the mall. With an ensemble that includes Reinhart, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, and Lola Tung, there's no doubt Forbidden Fruits will make waves when it hits theaters in 2026.But, a very special something you don't have to wait for? Hal & Harper, a limited series that's quietly one of the best new shows of 2026. From the mind of Cha Cha Real Smooth writer, director, and star, Cooper Raiff, Hal & Harper stars Reinhart opposite Raiff as the title brother and sister. Throughout eight episodes, the show explores Hal and Harper's codependent relationship, digging into the benefits of having an impossibly loving and supportive sibling, while also showing how that dynamic is holding them back. In order to do that to the fullest, the show also cuts back to pivotal points in Hal and Harper's childhood, scenes during which Raiff makes the bold decision to have him and Reinhart play the seven and nine-year-old versions of their characters — to great effect.Between American Sweatshop and Hal & Harper, Reinhart doesn't just go two-for-two in 2025, but she starts to lock in the fact that she's an undeniable star, an actor with range that Riverdale only scratched the surface of. Plus, it also proves that that pickiness is paying off. “Where you have maybe 25% control of your career, in that industry, I want to feel that I milked that percentage of what I could control.” So far, so good in that respect.
