Hal encourages continuous service to God, regardless of age, and stresses that retirement does not diminish one's mission. He concludes by urging everyone to live out their calling as effective disciples for Christ. For our study, we'll be looking at many characters from the Old Testament and some from the New Testament.

Amin. (Dod).

In this episode of STRAT, retired Marine Intelligence Officer LtCol. Hal Kempfer dives deep into the renewed threat posed by the Houthis—officially known as Ansar Allah—in Yemen. Drawing on historical, political, and strategic insights, Hal explores the group's Zaydi origins, Iranian ties, and the devastating toll of Yemen's ongoing civil war. With over 150,000 lives lost and one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history, the Houthis continue to destabilize the region and disrupt critical global trade routes through the Red Sea. Their latest attacks—including the coordinated assaults that sank two merchant vessels—raise urgent concerns about maritime security, global shipping, and the strategic implications of potential military responses. Hal breaks down the cost-benefit calculus for regional actors, challenges of ground engagement, and internal leadership fractures within the Houthi movement. Tune in for an essential briefing on a threat that's not going away.Takeaways:· The Houthis have escalated maritime violence, targeting over 100 merchant vessels.· Their complex attacks now involve sea drones, anti-ship missiles, and coordinated assaults.· The Red Sea corridor—vital for $1 trillion in trade—is under severe threat.· Iran-backed and ideologically rooted in Zaydi Islam, the Houthis are a resilient force.· Military intervention faces serious terrain, tribal, and logistical challenges.· Leadership within the Houthi movement is contested, limiting decapitation strategy effectiveness.· Airstrikes have failed to fully degrade Houthi operational capabilities.· The global economic and security implications of continued Houthi attacks are profound and growing.#STRATPodcast #HalKempfer #MutualBroadcastingSystem #StrategicRiskAssessment #Houthis #YemenWar #RedSeaSecurity #MaritimeThreats #IranProxy #GlobalTradeCrisis #BabElMandeb #MiddleEastConflicts #AnsarAllah #NavalWarfare #TerrorismAnalysis #MilitaryIntel #SecurityBriefing #ShippingRisks #ZaydiIslam #AirstrikeLimitations

Our guest today is Roger Mayer, one of the most influential scholars in the field of trust and co-creator of a widely cited model of organizational trust. After attending Roger's presentation at the FINT Conference in Genoa, Italy, podcast host Severin de Wit sat down with him for a conversation on the evolving nature of trust and the surprising role that suspicion plays within it. The conversation begins with two striking images from Mayer's FINT talk: HAL 9000, the eerily calm AI from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", and the Shoggoth, a chaotic, shapeshifting creature recently adopted as a meme in AI circles. Mayer uses these metaphors to illustrate a central dilemma: as AI systems become more powerful and autonomous, how do we trust something we don't fully understand? Mayer introduces the concept of state-level suspicion, based on research by Bobko, Barelka, and Hirshfield. He explains that suspicion isn't just a gut feeling; it's a cognitive state involving uncertainty, heightened awareness, and the perception of possible harm. Far from being purely negative, suspicion may serve as a protective and even constructive force in complex organizational settings. A major focus of the episode is what Mayer calls Organizational Dissociative Identity Disorder (ODID). In this phenomenon, organizations send conflicting signals to employees, behave inconsistently, or act as if they have “multiple personalities.” Whether caused by mergers, mission drift, or rogue internal actors, ODID can undermine trust and leave employees feeling destabilized. Roger discusses how AI can further complicate this dynamic when its decision-making processes are opaque or misaligned with human expectations. Roger Mayer previously appeared on TrustTalk in our March 13, 2024 episode, where we explored the foundations of his trust model. In this follow-up conversation, we focus on the emerging tensions between trust, technology, and organizational coherence.

This week, we're delighted to welcome Thomas Robson-Kanu to the show, known to many of you I'm sure as Hal. The different names he has gone by is the perfect demonstration as to why this is such a unique story. A footballer with over nearly 500 competitive games under his belt and a businessman with revenues in the tens of millions, Thomas is the epitome of creating additional opportunity alongside elite sporting performance. Many of us think straight to that momentous moment in Euro 2016 when he scored the goal of goals against Belgium to put Wales in their first Semi-Final. As incredible as that was, it doesn't come close to doing him justice. The Turmeric Co has become a leading company in the food and beverage industry, with the shots extracted directly from turmeric roots linked to Hal overcoming career ending injuries and chronic inflammation. We have to be careful about how we directly link this to recovery, but everything points to major health benefits and recovery. But how do you build a business and compete in the Premier League at the highest level? This is a conversation for everyone; any athlete looking to understand how you can influence the business world, Hal gives one of the best explanations we've heard on 80 shows. Anyone interested in the realities of building a business alongside another high intensity career, this is also for you. Not to mention, from a fan point of view, it's another reveal on the people behind the athletes we celebrate but don't give full recognition to. We have put a link to the Turmeric Co below (not a paid advert!) because I think this genuinely something you should try. I'm excited for you to hear this. On today's show we discuss: Football, Media & Player Empowerment What was it like to walk away from football while still receiving offers? How do you recover after being told you'll never play without pain again? Why do so few players take control of their own stories? How does the football system fail young players in preparing them for life after the game? Why media narratives can overlook the full story of a player's journey Entrepreneurship & the Athlete Mindset: How did he balance building The Turmeric Co. while still playing professionally Why sports people make the best entrepreneurs Why resilience, discipline, and recovery matter just as much in business as in elite sport Building a brand off the back of a sporting career The mindset of training like every game could be your last and how that mentality translated to startup life What made Hal believe a turmeric shot could replace surgery Footballing Legacy Why careers aren't defined by stats, but by moments. The magic of the Euro 2016 tournament and how it reshaped Hal's legacy How can players prepare emotionally and financially for retirement Mentoring the next generation: what young footballers need to hear now. Elton's diving into Arthur C. Clarke's absolute acid trip of a book (okay, maybe just the ending), "2001: A Space Odyssey" – you know, the one with the soft spoken computer that murders it's crew to keep a secret? [SPOILERS] And those mysterious black rectangles that basically trolled humanity for millions of years. Here's what's happening this episode:Who was Arthur C. Clarke anyway? Turns out the guy invented the satellites that keep your phone connected to the world...in the 1940s. He even predicted we'd all be doom-scrolling on the internet way before anyone knew what WiFi was. Plus, he was part of sci-fi's holy trinity with Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. So, a nerd circle jerk. Well, maybe not...THAT, but a pretty important guy. He did well for guy who started out fiddling with radar during WWII.Join Elton as he walks through this wild ride from cavemen discovering tools to humans becoming space gods. There's evolution, mystery, and murder A.I., and honestly? A lot of nerdly nerd stuff that'll make your brain EXPAND in the best way. Don't worry – Elton takes a brunt of the load. The Clarke-Kubrick team-up: Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick basically wrote the book and movie at the same time, which sounds like a nightmare but somehow worked. They turned a short story called "The Sentinel" (Arthur hates that) and turn it into the most mind-f*cking sci-fi movie ever made, though it wasn't all dry humping and champagne.Whether you're into classic sci-fi, love a good book-to-movie story, or just want to understand why HAL 9000 is everyone's least favorite AI, this episode's got you covered. Fair warning: you might have an existential crisis. So, go easy on the sci-fi.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. We welcome back Hal, contributer of wonderful reviews at the official Talking Pictures Podcast as well as host of his very own show Couple Indemnity. 1980s political thriller shenanigans this week as what begins as a seemingly straightforward sex scandal quickly unravels into a complex web of conspiracy. Defence Of The Realm (1986) In the politically charged atmosphere of 1980s Cold War London, Fleet Street is a battleground of ambition, rivalry, and relentless deadlines. At the heart of this cut-throat world is Nick Mullen, a young, ferociously ambitious reporter for the Daily Despatch. Mullen is driven by a burning desire to make a name for himself, to break the one big story that will catapult him to the top of his profession. He is sharp, cynical, and initially unconcerned with the moral complexities that may lie beneath a sensational headline. His world is shared by Vernon Bayliss, a veteran journalist of the old school. Where Mullen is rash and hungry for glory, Bayliss is weary, methodical, and haunted by the compromises he has witnessed throughout his long career. He serves as a reluctant mentor and a cautious sounding board for Mullen's explosive energy, their dynamic a classic clash of youthful fire and aged wisdom, bound by a shared, albeit sometimes begrudging, respect for the craft. The film ignites when Mullen receives a tantalising tip from an anonymous source. The information points to a major sex scandal involving Dennis Markham, a respected Member of Parliament who has been a vocal critic of the government's close military relationship with the United States, particularly regarding the presence of American nuclear forces on British soil. The story is explosive: Markham has allegedly been frequenting a London club where he has been meeting with a call girl who is also a suspected KGB agent. For Mullen, this is the scoop he has been waiting for. He pursues it with vigour, and the subsequent front-page exposé creates a political firestorm, effectively destroying Markham's career and reputation overnight. Initially, Mullen basks in the glory of his journalistic triumph. However, the neat narrative soon begins to fray at the edges. Small inconsistencies and lingering questions trouble Bayliss, who, with his seasoned eye for detail, starts to believe that the story was too perfect, too easily handed to them. He quietly begins his own discreet investigation, urging a dismissive Mullen to consider the possibility that they have been used as pawns in a much larger, more sinister game. Mullen, still high on his success, initially resists Bayliss's cautious counsel, viewing it as the ramblings of a man who has lost his nerve. The tone shifts dramatically when Bayliss dies suddenly and mysteriously in what is officially ruled a heart attack. Stricken with guilt and a growing sense of dread, Mullen is shocked into action. He discovers that Bayliss had been secretly investigating a seemingly unrelated event: a near-disastrous accident at an American airbase in the UK. Retrieving Bayliss's hidden research, Mullen inherits his mentor's investigation and his paranoia. He begins to piece together the terrifying truth that the Markham scandal was not about sex, but was an intricately fabricated smear campaign designed to silence him. As Mullen delves deeper into the labyrinthine cover-up, the shadows begin to close in. He finds himself under constant surveillance, his flat is ransacked, and his every move is seemingly anticipated by faceless, powerful forces within the state's security apparatus. The story he is chasing is no longer about journalistic ethics or a political scandal; it is about a chilling government conspiracy to conceal a near-nuclear catastrophe from the public. Every new lead and every potential source becomes a risk, pushing Mullen further into a dangerous isolation where the very institutions meant to uphold the nation's defence are the ones he has to fear the most. He is no longer just a reporter chasing a story; he is a man fighting for his life against an enemy he cannot see. "Vodka and Coca-Cola. Detente in a glass!" Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!In years past I've tried to supply four lists of books around this time of year — my best books, the books that made me think the most, the most surprising books I've read, and the most disappointing books I've read. Unless I hear a barrage of protests, I'm going to cull that to two lists this year. I may or may not talk about surprising and disappointing books in December. For now, though, I'm contenting myself with two. Last week it was thinky books; today I share my favorites. It's been a pretty good year so far; here's hoping the best is still to come. Here's the list:10. Race to the Top of the World, by Sheldon Bart9. Moscow Nights: The Van Cliburn Story, by Nigel Cliff8. Laughing Matters, various writers, edited by Gene Shallot7. A Brilliant Solution, by Carol Berkin6. The Beatles: A Hard Day's Write, by Steve Turner5. The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck4. Jesus: Who is He?, by Tim LaHaye3. Mightier than the Sword, by David S. Reynolds2. Robert E. Lee and Me, by Ty Seidule1. The Sunflower, by Simon WiesenthalCheck out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He has covered politics for his entire career in journalism, giving him a unique insight into the reasons politicians often do the strange things that they do. Hal left daily journalism in 2006. In 1999, Hal started writing nonfiction books for young readers and by 2025 he has authored more than two hundred titles for several national publishers. His 2017 book for young readers, The Opioid Epidemic, was nominated for the $50,000 Kirkus Review Prize. He has also edited several books and was a contributing author to The Good Crisis, an examination of population issues in the 21st Century. Since 2015, he has served as a judge for the Eric Hoffer Award, a national literary contest. He makes his home in the Philadelphia suburbs.Painting the White House is a novel that tells the humorous story of an ordinary painter who lands the job of painting the White House. Once he gets inside and gets down to work, he finds himself entangled in all the cookies and weird intrigues that go on in the Executive Mansion. While authoring the book he wanted to accurately portray the White House, so he did a considerable amount of research. He soon found actual humorous stories about the White House, some of which he was able to weave into the narrative. Although, the book is a work of fiction. The sample questions which follow all deal with factual events in the White House.https://www.amazon.com/Painting-White-House-thought-couldnt/dp/1709165316http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

As we celebrate another birthday in the United States this week, we often find ourselves in a position to brag on ourselves a bit. Or maybe more than that. What's good for America is good for Americans, basically — including American Christians. But is that really so? Is “America First” compatible with the Bible, and can patriotism be carried too far? Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you! There's a lot of talk in recent years about how great America is, or was, or might be in the future if we vote for the right people. But instead of America's greatness, I'd like to talk about its goodness. Steve Wolfgang and BJ Sipe are here to help me cover the topic in the second part of our recent discussion. Whatever your political affiliation, I think you'll find a lot of spiritual meat to chew on here. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, some of golf's most legendary names strolled and dominated the fairways. Superstars like Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, and Sam Snead. These were the stars golf fans came out to see play. They were the golfers who grabbed the headlines. But there were others, less known stars, who also won their share of tournaments. Stars like Henry Picard, Horton Smith, and Tommy Armour. And then there was Paul Runyan. Certainly not an imposing figure standing at 5-foot-7, 130 pounds. But he was also one of the game's most dominant figures, especially during the 1930s. Known as Little Poison for his "deadly" short game, Runyan is one of only six golfers to ever win nine tournaments in one year, and the first to ever win more than eight in one season. In 1933, Runyan won nine times. Overall, he posted 29 wins, 28 during the 1930s. His two biggest wins came in the PGA Championship. In 1934, Runyan, when the PGA was still a match-play event, Runyan captured his first Major by downing Craig Wood on the 38th hole of play, 1-up. But it was his 1938 win at the PGA Championship that stunned the world of golf when he crushed Snead 8 and 7 in the most lopsided final round in the history of the PGA. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, I take a look back at the wonderful, Hal of Fame career of one of golf's forgotten heroes, Paul Runyan.Mentioned in this episode:Sports History Network Theme SongThis theme song was produced by Ron "Tyke" Oliver of Music Meets Sportz https://sites.google.com/view/sportsfanztastic?usp=sharing
