This week my guest is Greg Hanson; show promoter, sometimes-drummer, and head of the Brooklyn tape label King Pizza Records. He was kind enough to have me over to his place on a warm October evening to talk about growing up in the suburbs of NYC, film school in Boston, booking and playing Brooklyn shows over the last decade, striving to create a community, and how to be okay with taking care of yourself. This week my guests are Ev Gold and Paul Claro, Brooklyn-born cousins who make up the heavy-experimental duo Cinema Cinema. We met up over the summer to talk about growing up in south Brooklyn, playing gigs in what’s known these days as “Old New York,” how formats have changed over the years, and, of course, their favorite music. Since their formation in 2008, Cinema Cinema have played nearly 500 live shows including half a dozen European tours and an opening slot for Black Flag’s 2014 North American tour. On the inaugural episode of Sounds Familiar my guest is Ann Courtney; singer/songwriter of NYC staple Mother Feather. Ann and I sat down back in July to talk about the ups and downs of being a creative performer, how NYC's music scene has changed in the last twenty years, what music's been turning us on and a lot more. Ann grew up the daughter of U.S. diplomats, spending her high school years in Pakistan and the Philippines before moving to New York in 1999. In 2010 she formed Mother Feather, eventually getting a label deal with Metal Blade Records which released the band's self-titled debut in 2015. The following year saw Mother Feather traveling with Warped Tour and in 2018 the band released their second album, Constellation Baby.
