We are listening to the new song in full... in 7-second chunks so we don't violate Spotify's strict copyright protections. But that's not all. We're also talking about how Sumerian Records have launched a comic book publishing company. Join us as we explore new graphic novels about The Used, the Offspring, and Underoath. Black Flag is back! This time with literal children playing with Gregg Ginn. As I Lay Dying have improbably announced a European tour despite losing every band member and manager. South Florida's Punk Roots: Mike 'Milo' Lesser and Gay Cowboys In BondageFor the first time, Mike 'Milo' Lesser, a South Florida punk pioneer, shares his story. As the vocalist of Gay Cowboys In Bondage, one of the region's earliest hardcore punk bands, Mike recounts his early days attending iconic venues like the Hollywood Sportatorium and Finders, where he saw in their infancy, influential bands like Black Flag and Misfits. He dives into the formation of Gay Cowboys In Bondage, who initially went by Social Risk, and their notable appearances, including infiltrating a Battle of the Bands at Piper High School (Broward County) and opening for the Minutemen at Flynn's in Miami Beach. Mike also reminisces about playing with Roach Motel, recording at Sync Studios, and the significance of Open Books and Records. He fondly recalls friends and bandmates, including Libby Bentley, Charlie Pickett, Malcolm Tent, and Pete Moss (R.I.P.). The story also covers the band's discography, including their debut demo "We're Not Gay But The Music Is" (1983), the 7" EP "Owen Marshmallow Strikes Again" (1984), and a 2005 CD compilation of their work from 1983-1984.

After years of relentless touring, financial hardship, lineup changes, and violence, Hermosa Beach hardcore pioneers Black Flag finally unleashed their debut full-length Damaged in 1981.With 20-year-old newcomer Henry Rollins entering the fold, the band delivered genre-defining anthems like “Rise Above” and “Police Story” while also pushing boundaries on the raw, experimental “Damaged I & II.”Conflicts over the album's distribution sparked a lawsuit from the label, ultimately delaying the release of their equally influential (and polarizing) follow-up. Nevertheless, Damaged stands as the product of Black Flag's blood, sweat, and defiance, and remains a towering pillar in punk history!Recommendations:Salome - SalomeSalome - TerminalThou / Salome - Our Enemy CivilizationThanya Iyer - TIDE/TIEDMachine Head - The More Things Change...Propagandhi - At PeaceFor all updates on Riff Worship follow us on Instagram and TwitterWatch Riff Worship on YouTubeWatch Review's from the Dylbozer's DinCheck out our official playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

TV writer & Record Collector Andrew Reich discusses his decade-long journey creating a documentary about Los Angeles music legends Redd Kross and the McDonald brothers' musical partnership. Topics Include: How Andrew made the leap from TV writing to filmmaking. Wife's suggestion sparked the documentary idea. Heard Steve McDonald's abduction story on a podcast. TV writing different from documentary making - can't control narrative. Documentary structure doesn't follow traditional storytelling beats. Director learned new storytelling techniques through editing. Documentary required extensive collaboration with editor Aaron Elders. Filming spanned approximately 10 years (2015-2025). Jeff McDonald's hairstyle changed dramatically throughout filming. Andrew discovered Redd Kross through "Teen Babes from Monsanto" album. Became fan at 13, requesting records for radio station. Redd Kross connects diverse bands from Black Flag to Go-Go's. Director considers Redd Kross one of Los Angeles' greatest bands. Documentary coincided with band's current renaissance and revival. Making the movie spurred new Redd Kross creative activity. Band created "Born Innocent" song specifically for the film. Initial filming was sporadic until Kickstarter provided funding. Created oral history structure from interview transcripts. Collected extensive archival material throughout production process. Film deliberately kept under 90 minutes for accessibility. Cut "Desperate Teenage Love Dolls" section despite importance. Film focuses on brothers' relationship rather than complete history. Steve's abduction possibly influenced band's fantasy/dress-up aesthetic. Andrew admires documentaries like "Anvil" and "Dig." Avoids rock critics in documentaries, preferring eyewitness accounts. Parents' interview about abduction was emotionally challenging. Wishes he had footage of certain legendary shows. New photographs emerged after film completion for eventual Blu-ray. Describes record collecting journey starting in New Jersey. Now focuses on first pressings of albums he loves. Sold unnecessary records to fund first pressing purchases. Australian bands currently producing best new punk music. Prefers seeing smaller shows over expensive arena concerts. Purchased rare Redd Kross/White Flag split single. David Longstreth on Dirty Projectors, Orchestral Experimentation, and the Radical Psychedelia of FatherhoodDavid Longstreth stands at a fascinating creative crossroads. For twenty years, he's been the driving force behind Dirty Projectors, crafting music that defies easy categorization while earning collaborations with icons like Björk, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney. Now, with his ambitious new orchestral song cycle "Song of the Earth," Longstreth explores our shifting relationship with nature while processing what he calls "the radical psychedelia of fatherhood."Speaking from his California home studio (formerly a kitchen, before that a garage that "bloomed with mold"), Longstreth reveals how this project emerged from conversations with his longtime friend Andre de Ritter, conductor of the Berlin-based ensemble Stargaze. Drawing inspiration from Gustav Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde," Longstreth initially set out to write nature poems, only to discover his feelings about the natural world had "gotten weird" – reflecting our collective anxiety about climate change. The beauty of Longstreth's approach lies in his embrace of uncertainty. Throughout our conversation, he repeatedly describes putting himself in musical situations "beyond what I'm capable of," allowing the learning curve itself to become part of the creative process. This has been his method since recreating Black Flag's "Damaged" album from memory for Dirty Projectors‘ 2007 "Rise Above" (deliberately avoiding revisiting the original) through to this orchestral collaboration that marries environmental themes with deeply personal transformation.Perhaps most captivating is Longstreth's description of how parenthood has fundamentally altered his perception.

Last week I debuted a new series where The Ledge rights the wrongs of that inept board that handles the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The previous episode presented artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that deserves to be inducted. This week we handle the 80s. Take a look at the 33 artists I present on this broadcast. You can’t deny that this would make the Hall a lot more fun. Imagine Jello Biafra’s induction speech for the Dead Kennedys! Or the remarks Henry Rollins would make for Black Flag. Or the emotions that would erupt for the late Shane MacGowan and the rest of The Pogues. How about the ensuing jam session that would involve Nick Cave with members of X, The Cramps, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and the Fleshtones? Of course, any Hall that I curate would have to include The Replacements! In fact, just insert them into the building and all of my complaints would immediately end. (Or would it?) Well, this week we have one of them on the show: Steven McDonald. Interview with Kevin Shields Of Detention. Detention was one of the first and best bands of the ‘80s New Jersey hardcore punk explosion. Their wonderfully tasteless “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” single became the college radio cult classic of 1983. The song's 97 seconds of primal Ramones-style speed-punk mocked the demise of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, John Belushi, and John Bonham — who “played the drug game and couldn't maintain.” They even foretold the drug-related heart attack of Jim Carroll, famous for “All The People Who Died,” screaming, “What are you waiting for? Do it!” Saving the best for last, “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” raised the obvious question: “Why couldn't it be Barry Manilow?” The Detention story goes back to Central Jersey, to the Shields family home in Hillsborough Township, about 20 minutes from the “culture capital” of New Brunswick. Kevin Shields, the fourth of five sons, grew up listening to his older brothers' sophisticated record collection of hippie music that ranged from Blue Cheer to King Crimson. Kevin recalls: “Early on, I knew that rock ‘n roll was something special. I was fascinated.”  “I enlisted in the Coast Guard when I was 17. I was out on my own. I was always a music guy and realized music was getting stale with Genesis and whatnot. I read all the magazines, and the ads in the back, so I sent money to these labels, and came home with albums like Never Mind the Bollocks and Rocket to Russia, and singles by the Slickee Boys and MX-80 Sound. But the coup d'grace was when we stationed in Alameda and I went wild in San Francisco. I went to the Mabuhay Gardens like three nights a week, seeing all the legendary West Coast bands: DKs, DOA, Black Flag. I got thrashed on the education of seeing live bands.”   When Kevin returned home in 1981, he was inspired to make music. “Detention came about because I decided to be a player not a spectator,” he explains. “The easiest way was to recruit my family, so I turned to my brothers. I bought a bass, but I didn't know how to play it. My brother Paul suggested I get in touch with this guitarist Rodney Matejek. He showed me how to play simply, and within months we started coming up with riffs, and what would become songs came very quickly.”  The band — Kevin, Rodney, frontman Paul Shields, and drummer Daniel Shields — played their first show at Raritan Manor on the Somerville Circle, hosted by a young Matt Pinfield in his first radio DJ gig at WRSU (Rutgers). It was a noisy and chaotic affair, with people rolling on the floor — until police arrived and stopped the mayhem. “We were given 100 bucks, and we promised never to play there again,” Kevin says with a grin.  Kevin offers some backstory: “Rob Roth, god bless his pointed head, he had a vision. He got us into the studio in Roselle Park, and he paid for it. All we had to do was get good recordings of the two songs, including the B-side “El Salvador.” It came out great. My brother Paul certainly had the lungs for the job! Those 500 copies got us gigs and got us a lot of notice.” In 1985, Detention released a self-produced self-titled album before disbanding. In this explosive episode of *The Metal Maniacs Podcast*, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd are joined by two heavy hitters from the scene: Luke Forton, the vocalist of **Reinventing Yesterday**, and Jeremy McClarey, the frontman of **Snake Out**. Together, they introduce Jay and Modd to the world of **hardcore**, diving deep into the extreme metal subgenre that has shaped everything from metal to punk and beyond. **Hardcore 101: The Roots and Rivalries** What comes to mind when you think of "metal"? Heavy riffs, brutal breakdowns, and epic solos? Now, what about "hardcore"? Luke and Jeremy help us explore the defining characteristics of hardcore as a genre, its connection to punk, and how it differs—and sometimes overlaps—with metal. We dig into the age-old debates: *Why can't we all just get along?* **The Evolution: From Punk to Metal** Hardcore's journey through music history is rich with influence. From its roots in 1980s punk with bands like **Black Flag**, **Minor Threat**, and **Bad Brains**, hardcore began blending into the metal world, influencing a wide range of extreme genres. We discuss how crossover thrash emerged, with bands like **Slayer**, **Metallica**, and **Anthrax** adopting hardcore and punk influences to shape the sound of thrash metal in the 80s. As hardcore evolved, it birthed new subgenres like **metallic hardcore** in the late 80s and 90s. Bands such as **Cro-Mags**, **Biohazard**, **Integrity**, **Madball**, and **Hatebreed** became central figures in the hardcore scene, mixing thrash, hardcore, and metal to create a new wave of aggressive, high-energy music. **The Blurring Lines of Metalcore** The line between hardcore and metalcore has always been fuzzy. As metalcore rose in popularity, many fans and critics argued about what truly defines the genre. **Proto-Deathcore and Beyond** As hardcore and metalcore evolved, so did the more extreme subgenres. **Deathcore** emerged as a brutal hybrid of death metal and hardcore, and while it's often debated whether it retains any hardcore essence, the influence of hardcore can still be traced in bands like **The Acacia Strain**, **The Red Chord**, and **Bleeding Through**. However, hardcore's reach didn't stop with metalcore or deathcore—it also inspired the rise of extreme bands in various niches of the underground scene. Luke and Jeremy give us their personal recommendations of modern hardcore bands, such as **Drain**, **Ingrown**, **Knocked Loose**, and **Candy**, discussing how they continue to carry the torch for hardcore with fresh, innovative sounds. **The Sound of Hardcore Today** In the second half of the episode, we dive into the current state of hardcore, where bands like **Twitching Tongues**, **God's Hate**, **Gates to Hell**, and **Fuming Mouth** have brought the genre to new heights. Whether it's the blistering speed of **Enforced** or the pummeling grooves of **Pain of Truth**, hardcore continues to push the boundaries of aggression, intensity, and emotion. Jay and Modd get to react to snippets of some of these bands' latest tracks, which leads to some fascinating conversations about the evolving sounds of hardcore and how the genre is both changing and staying true to its roots. The energy and raw emotion in these tracks are undeniable, and you'll hear firsthand the passion both our guests and hosts bring to the discussion. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the deep roots of extreme music. Whether you're a seasoned hardcore fan or new to the scene, Luke and Jeremy break down everything you need to know about the genre's evolution, its influence on modern metal, and how it's still thriving today. So, tune in and get ready for an unforgettable ride through the world of hardcore! **Don't forget to subscribe** to *The Metal Maniacs Presents: The Last Week on Earth*, where we bring you all the latest and greatest in metal, hardcore, and beyond!
