Residency was hard enough…can you imagine launching a startup as well? Well  my podcast guest did exactly that!  Dr. Greg Hanson is a 3rd year interventional radiology resident in Philadelphia, spent months looking for side gig opportunities himself, and felt there could be a better way of doing so. This led to the launch of FlipMD, a web platform for physicians focused on getting side jobs outside of their main clinical practice as a source of extra income, that now attracts hundreds of doctors each month.  You’ll learn how this young entrepreneur is able to successfully juggle everything from his clinical day job, family, and a pandemic, while still managing investors and new clients for his internet startup.  If you say you don’t have time to start a business, you may think twice after listening to his inspiring story! Dr. Jessica Lubahn is a urologist, health writer, and consultant. She is also the founder of ONDRwear, an apparel company that sells luxe leakproof underwear. Jessica tells me that she created this company to destigmatize urinary, menstrual, and other leakage through the creation of products that are highly effective and beautiful.  Dr. Lubahn received her medical degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Then, she completed her surgical internship and urology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Here are the major steps that Jessica followed in creating her new apparel company: Identify a problem experienced by her patients. Create the prototype of a potential solution, in this case, a tangible product. Research the industry, network, and determine if creating the product is feasible. Establish the business, and engage an accountant, attorney, and other necessary professionals. For her physical product, create a design or blueprint and find a manufacturer. Create a website and social media accounts, and develop a marketing plan. Start selling the product. The process Jessica followed is quite similar to the way that Greg Hanson started his business in last week’s episode #170. If you’d like to check out the Onderwear company, go to ondrwear.com. It's a very nicely designed and presented website, and I think you can still get a 15% discount on its well-designed clothing. Dr. Greg Hanson decided to start a business that provides the latest way to connect doctors with interesting jobs. Greg is a PGY-3 interventional radiology resident in Philadelphia. He graduated from UCLA with his BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences before moving across the country to New York City. While in New York, Greg obtained his Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology with an advanced certificate in applied biostatistics. He obtained his medical degree from the Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire. In June 2018, he started his surgical internship, followed by his integrated interventional radiology residency. During his first year of diagnostic radiology, he began doing side jobs using his statistical and science background to earn extra money. But the process of finding those jobs was difficult. He believed there should be a better way to link physicians with side jobs and this is sparked the idea for flipMD. It’s a pretty straightforward business. Find businesses that need the expertise or advice of physicians and connect them with appropriate physicians looking for side jobs. It reminds me of what Upwork does for other freelancers. I encourage you to check it out at flip-MD.com and give it a try if you’re in the market for a part-time gig advising start-ups or other freelance work. Heart Avail is a Spokane, WA based band writing emotional hard rock lending their strength to fans through their deep lyrics and catchy guitar riffs. In 2008, Greg Hanson (guitar) was writing symphonic metal while Aleisha Simpson (vocals) was honing her skills with her acoustic guitar and powerful voice. Their fated meeting occurred online and the pair worked together in perfect unison to create something haunting and new. The group is a culmination of all the best musicians from Aleisha’s past including Mick Barnes on bass and Seamus Gleason on drums. During the writing process Greg composes guitar melodies for each song and then Aleisha listens for hours to hear the tale that each song has to tell her. Once she can hear the meaning, she can then transcribe it into lyrics and Mick and Seamus can write their parts to complete each track. The band’s influences like Evanescence, Nightwish, and Within Temptation are heard in each aspect of the music from the vocals to the drums. Their self titled EP is inspired by the loss of loved ones and the release is essentially a therapy session with painful lyrics to relate to those with similar experiences. The EP is slated to be released on December 9, 2016 with distribution by Milagro Records.. Fun Fact: In 2016, Heart Avail performed live at the famed Sundance Film Festival in addition to NAIRMA’s Road to the Red Carpet event.
