The Department of Defense and the unifromed military services are undertaking a massive acquisition overhaul prioritizing speed and rapid innovation. One of the services leading the way on that journey is the Department of the Navy. Last month at DefenseTalks, CTO Justin Fanelli delivered a dynamic keynote sharing how the sea service is going about its technology-enabling acquisition transformation. Kirsten Davies has been formally sworn in as chief information officer at the Defense Department where she'll oversee a “broad portfolio” of important programs, the Pentagon announced. Davies took the reins shortly before the Christmas holiday, according to officials, less than a week after she was confirmed by the Senate. “She brings to the Department two decades of transforming organizations for the digital age, building cyber defenses, tackling tech debt, and innovating at scale,” officials wrote in a post on the Office of the CIO's LinkedIn page, noting her private sector experience working in top leadership roles for major companies such as Unilever, Estee Lauder Companies, Barclays (Africa Group), Hewlett Packard Enterprises, and Siemens AG. Her extensive IT and cybersecurity background was previously touted by experts who wrote a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee in support of her nomination for Pentagon CIO. In social media posts, DOD officials noted that Davies will be serving under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth while leading digital modernization efforts and “overseeing for him the information enterprise, cybersecurity, technology innovation, and a broad portfolio of national security programs.” Davies took the helm from Katie Arrington, who has launched and shepherded major initiatives while performing the duties of DOD CIO in a non-Senate-confirmed capacity. The Federal Aviation Administration is taking another step toward its goal of modernizing systems and processes by picking two partners to help replace more than 600 radars. The agency said Virginia-based RTX and Spanish firm Indra Sistemas will come onboard the FAA's air traffic control overhaul, marked by high stakes, tight timelines and billions of dollars in funding. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in the Monday announcement.“Most of our radars date back to the 1980s. It's unacceptable.” The radar replacement will kick off this quarter, with a finish line of June 2028 as the goal. The contracts will be paid for by the initial funds allocated in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which earmarked $12.5 billion for the air traffic control modernization project. The radar overhaul is much needed and critical to ensuring safety and efficiency, according to DOT officials. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a statement. “Many of the units have exceeded their intended service life, making them increasingly expensive to maintain and difficult to support. Sincerity, Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā, is the infallible way in which one can come to understand clearly who one is and who Kṛṣṇa is. He says it in the 10th Chapter of the Gītā: teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te He said, if you're sincere and you try to understand me even in the simplest way, even if you're not taking advantage, Prabhupāda writes in the purport of a religious practice, if you're just sincerely eager to know who God is, then Kṛṣṇa says, "I will give you the information from within your heart. I'll show you the way." So the way we can overcome those other distractions is by sincerely asking to know the truth. It's infallible, and it's worked since the time immemorial. Any living entity, anywhere in any era or culture who asks the abyss, "Please reveal Yourself to me. Show me who I am. Show me who you are. Please reveal," then Kṛṣṇa says to that person: "dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ: I'll give intelligence." The nectar of life is concentration on Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa is present in His name. So you can trust the process: if you give yourself to full focus on the name, then you'll become absorbed and attracted. And it's not difficult. In rajas, the mind says, "I want to go somewhere else. I want to go somewhere else. I want to go somewhere else." And the mind flees to try to find some variety in the material nature. But all varieties come from Kṛṣṇa. Everything is complete in Kṛṣṇa, and if we surrender to that moment in which we just give our mind completely to Kṛṣṇa, then we can be in absorption. We won't even know what time it is or how long we've been chanting. We'll just be aware of one thing, and that is Kṛṣṇa's name in the Mahāmantra. So Kṛṣṇa has kindly appeared to us in this form of the Mahāmantra, and He's given us direct access to Him through this. So, we are reverent and we do the practice—not just chant and think of something else, but chant and only think of the name—and keep bringing our minds back to the name because it will go away. You have to be vigilant to come back to the name and be meditative on the holy name. The Marine Corps is gearing up to expand its first-person view drone capabilities in the New Year by purchasing 10,000 new platforms and increasing the number of troops who are trained on them, according to government contracting documents and service officials. Earlier this week, the Corps announced a standardized training program for small-sized unmanned aerial systems, which include several courses for attack drone operators, payload specialists and instructors. Several units, from III Marine Expeditionary Force in the Pacific to Marine Forces Special Operations Command are now authorized to immediately start these courses. Meanwhile, the service is also asking industry to make thousands of UAS for under $4,000 per unit, according to a request for information posted in December. The intent is for Marines to be able to modify these drones with “simple” third-party munitions and repair them on their own. The RFI also inquired about autonomy and machine learning integration for these systems. Over the next several months, the service will aim to certify hundreds of Marines to use FPV drones, according to the Pentagon, with the goal of having every infantry, reconnaissance and littoral combat team across the fleet equipped with these platforms by May. Officials said that these courses were shaped by recent certifications and the Drone Training Symposium in November, an event intended to solidify and scale training across the fleet. DefenseScoop also reported last week that the Marine Corps had certified forward-deployed Marines on FPV drones for the first time in November. More than two dozen troops with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to the Caribbean trained for more than a month-and-a-half to qualify on various FPV drone capabilities, a significant milestone for the force after a year of navigating untrodden ground. The Army recently established an artificial intelligence career field that select officers can transfer into starting next month, DefenseScoop has learned. It is also considering the potential for warrant officers to join the new role. The service created the 49B “area of concentration” for AI and Machine Learning on Oct. 31, according to Maj. Travis Shaw, a spokesperson for the Army. Between Jan. 5 and Feb. 6, 2026. Army officers who already have a few years of service or more can apply for the role through the Voluntary Transfer Incentive Program (VTIP), which is meant to support the Army's manning needs. It was unclear how many officers the Army hopes to transfer into the job, but those selected will reclassify by Oct. 1, 2026, Shaw said. The service expects those personnel to have completed their transition into the AI field by the following year. The effort comes as the Department of Defense continues to boost the use of large language model AI systems for military purposes. Earlier this month, the Pentagon launched GenAI.mil, a hub for commercial AI tools — one that DefenseScoop reported military personnel were meeting with mixed reviews and a bevy of questions about how to use it in their daily operations. The Army has also been embracing LLMs and AI, including through its Army Artificial Integration Center (AI2C), which was established in 2018 to integrate those systems into the service. However, not three years ago, Israel joined the US as the only two countries on Earth to recognize Morocco's claim to sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara—a betrayal of the occupied Sahrawi Arab people who seek an independent state. And of course both these deals constitute a betrayal of the Palestinians. Somaliland and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic should be natural allies, and instead they are being pitted against each other in the Great Power game. Some vinyl-lovers may not like this product initially because a flat, horizontal turntable would be preferred for sound quality. Dirty White Boy rock and roll and Club 69 kick up a noisy messy rumpus. This is the last in a near complete run of the album’s tracks making it to 41 Rooms. When you learn a musical instrument, did your teacher ever tell you that you have to practice at least half hour a day? Otherwise don't come back. And if you've ever had a week where you goofed off and you didn't do it, when you go back to your teacher, you really don't have any questions. But if you work hard and you do your half hour a day, inevitably, when you go back, you're going to have questions. The teacher knows also. If you don't have any questions, he or she will say, "Oh, you didn't practice. Did you?" The same way these are important states to be in where we feel a little bit unstable, because then when we come to the answers, which you will as you continue to hear in chant, or when you find a competent person, and you say, "What about this?" Then you get the perfect answer. It fills in part of your repertoire so that you become fortified more and more. This is the difference. There are various classifications of advancement in devotional service; there's the kaniṣṭha, madhyama, and uttama. All it means is beginning, middle and upper, but there are unlimited gradations within those also like they're kaniṣṭha-kaniṣṭhas and madhyama-kaniṣṭhas and uttama-kaniṣṭhas. Fill in the rest—you can do the math on your own. And in one description of of these levels, the kaniṣṭha-adhikārī has komala-śraddhā. Komala is like when a little sprout comes up. It's very delicate, so you have to protect it a little bit. And it's described there that their faith is a little bit tender, so a kaniṣṭha-adhikārī, when hearing atheistic arguments, can sometimes be bewildered for a little while, before the faith comes back. The designation between a kaniṣṭha-adhikārī and a madhyama-adhikārī is that the madhyama-adhikārī has very firm faith and is not dissuaded by various arguments, but also he is not expert in śāstra. Doesn't know how it all fits together, and is not able to come up with logical replies to atheistic arguments. But the uttamādhikārī has firm faith and also has śāstric references; is called śāstra-sunipuṇa, which means kind of a 1600 on your SAT, but only in śāstra—knows how it all fits together and has these logical arguments. So whatever position one is in, that's fine. We just make advancement from there by hearing and chanting. Father Ron Rolheiser's new book Insane for the Light: A Spirituality for Our Wisdom Years, which is about how to grow old well and be fruitful, first giving your life away and then your death so as to be a blessing. That's a recipe for joy. We also talked about mysticism, St. John of the Cross, and some miraculous experiences in real people's lives that reveal God abiding and deep love, mercy, and patience with us all; that is truly the Good News of the Lord. I really, really enjoyed this book, and this conversation. Father Ron grew up in on a farm on Cactus Lake, Saskatchawan, on the Canadian prairie. He joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1966 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1972; he has many degrees in theology and philosophy including a doctorate from the University of Louvain in 1983. He started writing a column, In Exile, over forty years ago, and has also written (by my count) sixteen books. He has been Provincial Superior of his order, worked in its administration in Rome for six years, and taught theology in a number of august institutions. He still goes home to Cactus Lake, especially for Christmas. We recorded this episode on December 9, 2025, the Feast of Our Lady of Gudalupe, and Juan Diego, and also the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This will be our Christmas episode too and the last episode of 2025 and the first of the new liturgical year, so in keeping with our tradition I will play some Christmas Carols from Josh and Margot of the Great Space Coaster band with whom I was singing these carols last week. It's mentioned in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta by Kavirāj Goswāmī that the mode in which Chaitanya Mahāprabhu conducted himself at Kūramkṣetra was the same as he did everywhere. In a village near here, he met a very well-to-do person named Kūrma. He was a Brāhmana and a gṛhasta. He was also the leader of his community. When he saw Srī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu, as you might expect, Mahāprabhu was so attractive, Kūrma said to Lord Chaitanya that, "I will just go with you. Please, let me travel with you." Chaitanya Mahāprabhu didn't stay long in one place—sometimes just one day. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu replied to Kūrma, "Never speak like this again." This is the instruction that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu gave to Kūrma that Kavirāj Goswāmī says was consistent everywhere he went. He gave several instructions to Kūrma. One is, he said, "You should stay here and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." This was the primary reason that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu traveled everywhere: to teach everyone the process of chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra together. He said, "Stay in your home and stay in your village, and organize people so they can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." The second instruction he gave him was, "You should teach this to other people." He said, "If you do these two things, there's no reason to leave home." In every culture, there's a sense of how danger brings out the best in us when it comes to surrendering to God. For instance, I don't know what World War, you'd have to ask my old friend chat GPT, who really likes me, when this phrase became prevalent, it says, "there are no atheists in foxholes." A foxhole is a military term. It means, when you're in the infantry on the battlefield and you're being shot at, you have to dig really quickly a divot in the ground so you can be below ground level, so you don't get hit by mortar shrapnel or bullets. In such a precarious situation, people, other humans, have noted that that's when you start praying. "If you get me out of this one, I'll be good for the rest of my life," or whatever the soldier might be praying for at that time. So your Question is, how can we stay conscious of Kṛṣṇa all the time, mainly by keeping the transcendental vibration going. It's like tonight we have a medley of bhajana, chanting a chapter and reading. Developing a taste for that is very helpful. Have your bhajana together. I like to say, 'get your bhajana on'. Make sure that you have a bhajana. Because if you don't have a bhajana, then you're going to have scrolling, randomness. Scrolling just means random observation of the of the world. But when you're very deliberate and keep the transcendental vibration going, and you develop a repertoire where you can have variety, and you keep hearing and chanting and a repertoire of service also, then you'll notice that you're happy because whatever situation you're in, you're thinking of Kṛṣṇa.
