It's a question of alignment because, by nature, we're liberated. It's not that we ever actually mix with the material nature. In the Vedic language, Prabhupāda says, "asango hy ayaṁ puruṣaḥ"—that the jīva actually never has any saṅga with the material world. As elaborated upon by Kapiladeva in the Third Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, he ascribes the experience of the soul to be dreamlike. He gives this analogy: in a dream, you might see something horrific, like you're being killed by having your head cut off. Then he says, first of all, this is a dream. Second of all, the idea itself is a little misplaced because if your head is cut off, it would be hard to watch yourself—not just "hard" as in abhorrent to watch, but in the sense that your optical nerve is cut! It is a misunderstanding and a misalignment with who we actually are. 'Bhayaṁ dvitīyābhiniveśataḥ syād īśād apetasya viparyayo 'smṛtiḥ.' (SB 11.2.37) This is the definition of the original problem of the soul is apetasya—turning one's face away from Īśa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, bhakti means you turn your face back to Īśa, and the phenomena of bhayaṁ syāt (fear arising) is no longer there. So, there's one fell swoop. 'Kṛṣṇa sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra.' As soon as you bring in Kṛṣṇa, the light comes on. After a series of protests that led to a protracted evaluation period, the General Services Administration is moving forward with the Alliant 3 procurement, announcing Friday the first round of awards for the governmentwide IT services contract. GSA said in an online award notice that it received 133 proposals for the Alliant 3 Governmentwide Acquisition Contract (GWAC) solicitation and selected 43 winners for the first phase. Those not chosen are still eligible for future award phases until the agency has selected all 76 recipients, per the notice. The announcement comes more than a year after the GSA issued the request for proposals for the next iteration of the GWAC award, which has no maximum dollar ceiling, due to unsuccessful bid protests from multiple vendors. The latest iteration of the vehicle is a multiple-award, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract for a variety of IT-based services that builds upon the GSA's Alliant and Alliant 2 GWACs. With these awards, agencies can issue task orders for services including cybersecurity, data solutions, systems engineering and cloud services, the GSA said. Longtime government contractors like Maximus, Booz Allen Hamilton, General Dynamics Information Technology, and Leidos were among the 43 phase one winners. Democratic lawmakers are once again pushing back on the Department of Homeland Security's expansive use of surveillance technology, with more than a dozen members of a House Oversight subcommittee expressing concern in a letter to Secretary Kristi Noem over the agency's processes for collection and analysis of cellphone data.The representatives pointed to recent reports of the agency procuring tools from Penlink, which is said to collect cellphone location data and allow customers to search for devices, and Paragon, a vendor known to enable access to a mobile device without the owner's knowledge or consent. Without guardrails, these tools introduce risks to data privacy and civil liberties, according to the signatories of the letter, which was led by Rep. Shontel Brown of Ohio, ranking member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation. “Location data can reveal intimate details of a person's life, including where they live, work, worship, go to school, or seek medical care,” the lawmakers said. “DHS could use these tools to identify individuals for targeting based solely on their presence in certain locations, without a warrant or probable cause and regardless of their citizenship or residency status.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. As a sessional lecturer at the University of Canberra, Melissa lectures on the value of strong educational management and administration skills for school leaders. Teaching for over twenty years, in NSW, Singapore and London, Melissa has been messing about with words for as long as she can remember, publishing non-fiction, anthologies, teacher guides and textbooks. She is passionate about teacher education focussing on sustainable teaching practices, sharing her ideas and strategies in her new book The Sustainable Teacher (Amba Press, 2023). Melissa's research includes a Churchill Fellowship, NSW Premier's English Scholarship, and a Boise State Writing Project Fellowship from the United States National Writing Project teacher-leadership program. First Lenten Retreat: The Works of Lent: Growth Toward a Generous Spirit During each Friday of the Lenten Season, there will be a Lenten Retreat Conference. This is the first week within this series. Each conference will appear singularly on the Website, SoundCloud, Facebook and iPod platforms. All conferences will also appear within this post. This Retreat explains that Lent has a deliberate spiritual structure rooted in early Church practice. While many people think of Lent mainly as “giving something up,” the Church intends something deeper: a transformation of the heart through the three traditional works of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Historically, Ash Wednesday was added later as a gateway into Lent, orienting believers toward repentance and renewal. In the ancient Church . . . especially in Rome . . . seasonal fasts (later called Ember Days) connected spiritual life to the rhythms of agriculture: planting, growth, harvest, and sharing food with those in need. These fasts were communal, not private, and included processions, vigils, ordinations, and acts of charity. The faithful prayed not only for themselves but for crops, the poor, catechumens preparing for baptism, and new ministers of the Church. The Retreat stresses that Lenten practices are not about quantity (“doing more”) but quality and intention: • Prayer asks for whom and how we pray, deepening attentiveness to God. • Fasting reveals what we truly hunger for, disciplines disordered desires, and fosters solidarity with the poor. • Almsgiving is the goal toward which prayer and fasting lead . . . self-gift in imitation of Christ. True fasting expands the heart; true prayer changes behavior; true charity gives not just possessions but oneself. Lent therefore trains Christians to move from self-centeredness to sacrificial love, mirroring Christ's own self-emptying. Before Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura departed for the spiritual world, he stayed in this place where he was engaged in bhajana. Nearby here is the area where Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu chased after the sand dune, considering it to be Govardhana Hill—a very sacred place here in Jagannātha Purī. Two weeks before he left, his disciple, A.C. Bhaktivedanta, had written him a letter as a householder and asked, "What can I do for your mission?" Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura asked him to preach in English. He had also told him previously, and reconfirmed: "You should print books." In fact, he said at Rādhā-kuṇḍa, "If you ever get money, print books." Our Founder-Ācārya of ISKCON, Śrīla A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, followed those instructions with his heart, mind, and soul. To that end, he published hundreds of books that were distributed in the millions; and even today, we are increasing that number all over the world. For Bhādra Pūrṇimā 2026—the great festival that is now taken up by devotees on every continent of the world—we, in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, have the solemn goal to distribute at least 108,000 Śrīmad-Bhāgavatams in the next several months leading up to the day of Bhādra. The full moon day, during which the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam itself says that the giving away of a Bhāgavatam on that lunar celebration qualifies one to go back home, back to Godhead. We pray to Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, who instructed his dear disciple to spread this all over the world, that we may help by following the footsteps of Śrīla Prabhupāda. May we smash this goal together all over the world, uniting around the principle of spreading Krishna consciousness to all the poor people of the world who have no idea that the goal of life is to go back home, back to Godhead. Please, let us help them. Let us distribute the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: 108,000 sets. In the place we were today, Toṭā Gopīnātha—affectionately known as Toṭā Gopīnātha, because toṭā means "garden," Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to meet with Gadādhara Paṇḍita there daily to hear Bhāgavatam as revealed in the Caitanya-bhāgavata. Caitanya Mahāprabhu himself had some difficulty in reading the Bhāgavatam. Does anybody remember what it was? Too many tears. He destroyed his own copy from the tears; it was the same with doing any kind of pūjā. Gadādhara Paṇḍita is the internal potency of the Lord in the Pañca-tattva; He is Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Caitanya Mahāprabhu met there at that garden regularly to hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from Gadādhara Paṇḍita. This is an indication of the eternal pastime of the Lord, which is to hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam in the association of devotees. It is also one of the five most recommended out of sixty-four items of devotional service: to find a toṭā somewhere. In fact, it's necessary because I find that most places are fraught with distraction. If you go to Vṛndāvana, for instance, during festival times, and you walk from one end of the property to the other to get to your apartment, you'll be stopped by no less than ten people saying, "Hey, are you still doing that stuff and the thing?" and it takes a while. What's more, someone may come rapping at your door at any time, day or night, with a delivery or a question or something like that. So, finding a secluded place—like Caitanya Mahāprabhu repaired to the garden with Gadādhara Paṇḍita—and steadily hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam over a long time is medicinal. In fact, we find in our experimentation with this technique (in the way of emulating Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Gadādhara Paṇḍita) going to a place in Govardhana Hill we found that since most people don't make it out of the orbit of Vṛndāvana—so it's hard to get out there to Govardhana, It's a gated community, you only come through the gate if you have a purpose there. Taking time to just hear the Bhāgavatam and Prabhupāda's purports, it's as if there's a hologram in the room where Prabhupāda is personally manifesting, and Kṛṣṇa is personally manifesting. Śrīla Prabhupāda referred to it just now when he thanked Śrī Nārada for kindly appearing in the chapter. This is not hyperbole or imagination; it's the truth. The transcendental personalities are present in the sound vibration. How much medicine does one need to overcome the anarthas that plague one? A lot! Many protections from pollution and toxic chemicals have moved from the federal level to the states. This isn't just a recent phenomenon; it goes back decades, to changes in the structure of agencies that manage environmental health and to a growing partisan divide. As federal regulation of chemicals faltered, states started taking up the slack. States have always had a role as laboratories of innovation, and model environmental health policies can be found around the country. That is the focus of A Healthy Union: How States Can Lead on Environmental Health, recently published by Island Press. For example, Texas was one of the first states to mandate that all school districts implement policies and practices to reduce use of hazardous pesticides. Massachusetts requires factories that manufacture, process or use certain toxic chemicals to develop strategies to reduce them. Regional programs are on the rise. In this CHE Café discussion, we hear from the book's author, Susan Kaplan, an environmental health lawyer and professor whose experience spans federal and state government and academia and Sarah Doll, longtime leader of the Safer States coalition and veteran state policy advocate.
