Chaitanya Mahāprabhu said: yadi vaiṣṇava-aparādha uṭhe hātī mātā upāḍe vā chiṇḍe, tāra śukhi' yāya pātā (Cc Madhya 19.156) When growing the creeper of devotional service, it starts to grow in the heart. Rādha means to perform service to Kṛṣṇa; aparādha means the opposite. And Vaiṣṇava-aparādha means to make an offense to devotees He said Yadi—if, you do something that is contrary to proper service to the Lord.. Then, "uṭhe hātī mātā." Hātī means an elephant. Upāḍe vā chiṇḍe, tāra śukhi' yāya pātā"— you get an elephant in your garden. Back in Bushey, if you wake up one morning and there is an elephant in your backyard, it's too late; your garden is ruined because all he has to do is walk around a little bit. What to speak of if he is a maddened elephant! Because maddened elephants will go through and ravage neighborhoods, flip over rickshaws, then cars, then trucks, and smash down all the little shops along the way. You have probably seen it on YouTube; when an elephant becomes angry, sometimes they'll go for 8–10 miles and nobody can stop them. They wreak havoc. So, Chaitanya Mahāprabhu said that as a gardener, one must be especially careful not to offend Vaiṣṇavas, because it is the "mad elephant offense" (hātī-mātā-aparādha). Śukhi' means that after the elephant tramples on your devotional creeper, it dries up, becomes ineffectual, and won't grow anymore. Śukhi' yāya pātā—the creeper is ruined in that way. He told Sanātana and Rūpa Gosvāmī to be careful. And then the other thing he told him is.. Kṛṣṇa has already an intimate relationship with all living beings, because he's feeding them. Nityo nityānām cetanaś cetanānām eko bahūnām yo vidadhāti kāmān—He feeds everybody, and there's not one person you can find anywhere that doesn't have food available to him or her, because Krishna is all-powerful, and he's feeding every living being. But he wants more than that; not just this "supply and demand" because I'm hungry. He wants love, and he wants to extract the love that's dormant within the heart of every living being. Therefore, he sets up this elaborate ruse that he performs to demote Indra. That's just another reason that he performs the pastime. Indra became proud, and that's the death knell to bhakti. Pride comes in various forms, and one of them is entitlement. In fact, Yamunā Devī, one of the famous disciples of Śrīla Prabhupāda, preached heavily in her final days that we should beware of entitlement. That is, I think, because of my stature (whatever I may think that is), there are various ways we can get it into our head that we deserve more than others. Of course, there's etiquette, and we observe that; we're not communists. But if I have in my head that I deserve something, then it's very hard for me to appreciate anything. And this entitlement that pollutes the mind and consciousness had gotten into the mind and consciousness of Indra, and he thought, "I deserve that offering of the cowherd men." People who are bought and sold in politics, for instance, they may go along with treachery or despotism because they don't want to lose their job. Happens all the time. People just hang on because they think, "Well, anyway. Maybe it will blow over. Nobody will notice," but they just don't want to lose their job. And I mentioned, maybe the other night, that when the demigods were observing the fight between Hiraṇyakaśipu and Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, Narasiṁhadeva had captured Hiraṇyakaśipu, had him in his clutches. Now the devas, whose homes, whose realms, whose jobs, services, everything had been usurped by Hiraṇyakaśipu, were watching the fight. It says from behind the clouds, because they wanted everything back. They wanted all their stuff back. They wanted status quo back. So they were watching. What did Lord Narasiṁhadeva do during the fight? He caught Hiraṇyakaśipu. What happened after that? It appeared as if Hiraṇyakaśipu slipped away. What did the demigods think then? "Now we're really finished, because we were rooting for the enemy." Think of that: the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears and you have some doubt of whether he's going to win or not, and you're also thinking, "I just rooted for the people. The guy who's fighting against him, Hiraṇyakaśipu, is really going to come get me now." Imagine the kind of stricture that he's going to give to us now that we rooted for the enemy. These are very high-minded personalities. They are servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but they are attached. As it turns out, Lord Narasiṁhadeva is half cat, right? What do cats do when they catch a mouse? Have you ever seen it? When we were going door to door, there was a cat in Colorado on somebody's lawn. The cat was just sitting there and a little mouse was hopping around. As soon as the mouse would get a few inches outside a radius, the cat would catch it and pull it back and then wait for it. If anybody knows cats, they like to play with their prey before they crunch them up. In the same way, Lord Narasiṁhadeva let go, Prabhupāda said, because he has that feeling like, "Let him go, pull him back again." Then, of course, he ripped him into shreds. But in that case, we see that Prahlāda didn't mind at all. In fact, he wasn't afraid at all of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. In the whole mess he wasn't afraid because he was completely detached. The House on Monday passed a bill that would revamp how agencies purchase software, putting the legislation in the same place it was a year ago: waiting for the Senate to follow suit as the clock ticks down on the congressional calendar. The Strengthening Agency Management and Oversight of Software Assets (SAMOSA) Act would require agencies to examine their software licensing practices, with the aim of streamlining IT buying practices to avoid duplicative purchases. The bill is identical to legislation that passed the House last December but did not move forward in the Senate. The House bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., Shontel Brown, D-Ohio, Pat Fallon, R-Texas, and April McClain Delaney, D-Md., would press agencies to better manage their software without limiting procurement options. They would be required to submit IT assessments to the Office of Management and Budget, the General Services Administration and Congress, so better oversight could be conducted. On the House floor Monday, Brown credited her three co-sponsors as well as former Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., who died of cancer in May after taking the lead on this bill in addition to his myriad other government IT efforts. Brown, ranking member of the House Oversight Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation subcommittee, said the SAMOSA Act is a “straightforward good government bill that has strong bipartisan support from members of the Oversight Committee.” A new bill from Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., and Ted Budd, R-N.C., would establish a national network of cloud laboratories led by the National Science Foundation and supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, with the goal of enhancing collaboration between institutions while improving research efficiency with AI. If passed, NSF will select up to six programmable cloud laboratories from a range of applicants, including academic institutions and private-sector research groups. NIST would be tasked with setting standards and reporting to Congress about the feasibility for expansion. The bill, introduced last week, aligns with provisions laid out by the Trump administration's AI Action Plan and aims to codify existing NSF proposals, according to the sponsors. NSF earmarked $100 million for a similar AI-powered cloud network in August as it looked to expand access to emerging technologies. Researchers in the co-sponsors' home states have developed methods to ease automated discoveries, which will serve as a blueprint for the national effort. NSF will judge applicants on the level of existing data integration and automated capability infrastructure and capacity to support multi-user cloud workflows, among other criteria. In addition to bipartisan backing, the legislation garnered support from officials at Carnegie Mellon University, the Accelerate Science Now coalition and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Oscar pre-season is in full swing and nothing says that more than the annual Oscar shortlists, which expand to 12 categories this year, adding Casting and Cinematography. On episode 320 of the AwardsWatch podcast, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson is joined by Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello break down the morning's shortlist announcement, discussing what surprised, what was snubbed and how it impacts the Oscar races overall. 12 categories for the 98th Academy Awards were announced this morning: Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound and Visual Effects. Leading the way with eight mentions apiece were Sinners and Wicked: For Good. Both films made the cut in the exact same categories: Casting, Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Score, two in Song, Sound and Visual Effects. Frankenstein came in with six: Casting, Cinematography, Makeup, Score, Sound and Visual Effects. Up next, with five mentions apiece were F1 and One Battle After Another but possibly one of the day's biggest surprises was the huge showing for Spain's Oscar entry and Cannes Grand Prize winner Sirāt. Also earning five spots on the shortlist, it showed up in International Feature, Sound and Score as was relatively easy to predict, but also in Casting and Cinematography. The Academy added two new shortlists this year. Well, one new one and one returning after several decades. The much-anticipated new Casting category that debuts this season brought contenders like The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Weapons but shockingly didn't have room for Wake Up Dead Man, the third in the Knives Out trilogy packed with a hearty ensemble. Cinematography is back on the menu after a 46-year absence with finalists that included the major players like Sinners, One Battle After Another and Hamnet but also Ballad of a Small Player, Die My Love, Nouvelle Vague and Song Sung Blue to the table. We focus a good deal of time on these new categories but also look to how sound and film editing are often in sync, if this means Wicked: For Good is back, if Hamnet might be in trouble, what the hell is Veni Verdi and much more. In 1972, Śrīla Prabhupāda made a down payment on the land in Juhu beach, Bombay, intending to build Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, a beautiful temple there. Even though Śrīla Prabhupāda had made a down payment on the land, the owner, who had a past history of shady dealings, had not yet handed over the land deed to ISKCON as he had promised he would do. Śrīla Prabhupāda saw indications that the owner might change his mind and decide not to sell the land, or worse, he may try to cheat the devotees and keep the down payment. In India, when one installs deities on a piece of land legally, it secures one's hold on the land, as the deities become the proprietors, and no one else will dare to move them. Therefore, to secure the Juhu land, Śrīla Prabhupāda moved the Deities Śrī Śrī Rādhā Rāsa-Bihārī there as quickly as possible after giving the down payment. Just after doing this, he also performed a ceremony to lay the cornerstone for the temple he intended to build there, another act that legally solidifies one's right to keep and stay on the piece of land. At first, due to a lack of facility, the devotees had to worship Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa in a tent. After some years of intense struggle, Śrīla Prabhupāda and his followers developed the land, relocating the previous renters, and established a beautiful temple there that today hosts millions of people every year. As humans, we have the chance to build such a temple in our hearts. Our bodies are like that Juhu land. Just as Śrīla Prabhupāda quickly installed the deities on the Juhu land, we should also install Kṛṣṇa in our hearts as soon as possible, before death comes and cheats us, taking away our opportunity. By making a firm vow to chant the holy names a fixed number of times each day, we lay the cornerstone for a temple in our hearts where we can properly worship Kṛṣṇa. The Trump administration launched a new governmentwide hiring program Monday aimed at filling technology hiring gaps in federal agencies with workers who will serve in two-year stints. That program, dubbed the U.S. Tech Force, is being spearheaded by the Office of Personnel Management and has buy-in from private-sector tech companies that will serve as partners in the hiring initiative.The first cohort of recruits will be roughly 1,000 individuals who will range from early-career data scientists and engineers to engineering managers from the private sector. According to a release from OPM, their mission will be to accelerate AI adoption in government and fulfill a priority of the Trump administration. On a call with reporters Monday, OPM Director Scott Kupor said the goal of the program isn't to get workers to commit to “a 40-year career in federal government.” While that's welcome, he said, the aim is to “get the benefit of really smart people working on some of the world's most complex and difficult problems” and provide them with an opportunity, if they so choose, to then go work in the private sector. More than two dozen technology companies have already agreed to Tech Force partnerships, including Amazon Web Services, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Anduril, Nvidia, Oracle, Adobe and ServiceNow. Those companies have not made firm agreements to hire program alumni but can do so in line with their needs, Kupor said. The commitment that OPM has made to those partners, he said, is “to do a great job of recruiting fantastic people.” The White House and Office of Personnel Management shared more details last Wednesday about the effort to transition federal government HR platforms to a single system, outlining a timeline and expectations. In a memo to agency leaders, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and OPM Director Scott Kupor said the transition portion of the administration's “Federal HR 2.0” project will take place over the next two years, with some agencies coming online earlier than others. Agencies must also stop current projects related to their current systems unless they have an exception. Kupor said in an emailed statement with the memo: “For too long, taxpayers have footed the bill for duplicative HR systems that no modern organization would tolerate. Today's announcement is a major win for efficiency, accountability, and good government.” The memo is the latest action in the Trump administration's push to centralize HR systems as a way of saving money. Per the document, the government currently has more than 100 “core human capital management” systems, and the administration expects that consolidating those systems — as well as HR services — will save billions.
