Today, I'm dedicating our Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam class to His Holiness Badrinārāyaṇa Swāmi. Whether you knew or knew not, he was our GBC for many years although he never came here. He was dedicated to Śrīla Prabhupāda since he was a teenager, joined around 1971.He was known as a stalwart in practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness throughout his life. He was a householder, took sannyāsa. I had the fortune of serving next to him in many meetings in North America and also on the GBC body. My last interactions with him were in Māyāpur. I gave a report to the GBC which included a proclamation that we would distribute this year, combinedly around the world, 108,000 Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam sets. After my presentation (which was a little more than that), I was interacting with some of the devotees, but he came to me immediately. He grabbed my hands and he said, "Vaiśeṣika, I'm really into this 108,000!" He looked at me with such a sincere expression, and I said, "Mahārāja, I feel like hugging you right now." And he goes, "Well, why don't you then?" I sat next to him during the BBT-GBC Relations Committee. The BBT is a trust—the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust—and a trust has a beneficiary. The beneficiary is ISKCON, and therefore there's a committee of GBCs and BBT directors and trustees that meet regularly, at least once a year for the whole day, or most of the day to go over various ways in which the BBT and GBC are cooperating in beneficial ways. At that meeting, I sat next to him in the meeting room, and I was marveling at how he was able to stay in the body he was in, because he was completely emaciated. Although he mentioned and it was obvious that his body had become very much degraded. Every warranty there is had run out, but he was still running that body and in that body as if his duty was higher and he had no lag time. Actually, before we went to Vṛndāvana from Māyāpur, I asked him where he was going next. He said, "Vṛndāvana." And I said, "Oh, great, I'll see you there." And he said, "Well, we'll see." Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu every day would walk from Akrūra Ghāṭ in Vṛndāvana and sit down at Imlītala. It's preserved in a temple, and there's a little shrine outside where Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to sit under the tree and see the Jamunā. It's a celebrated place where you can remember Caitanya Mahāprabhu sitting and chanting, as it is mentioned in the śāstra that he would come there early in the morning—especially because many people came to see him at Akrūra Ghāṭ and he was besieged by the crowds, people wanting to just look at him and ask him questions. So, he would retreat to Imlītala, and there he would sit alone and see the beauty of the Jamunā River. It is said that he would chant into the late morning and early afternoon, just chanting japa. So that place is very special. We can remember how Caitanya Mahāprabhu is setting the example for all of us: how to relish Kṛṣṇa consciousness is taking time away from any other obligation to just sit and absorb the chanting of the Holy Names. There is nothing more effective than examining oneself and considering one's relationship with Kṛṣṇa by just chanting and hearing the name. We don't have to speculate. We can just suspend any doubts that we have and remember that God is a person; He has a name. His name is non-different from Him, and if we just chant sweetly and let it hit our ears without any expectation or any extra strain—and just be patient and consistent—then everything else will be done by Kṛṣṇa. We have here in our first slide a personality sitting, and you'll notice the aura around her. She has a myriad of images; and if we sit in a similar posture and note what we have moving about in our aura around our minds, we might notice something similar. Can you identify any objects in there, anybody? Are they descriptive enough to identify any of those things? Twitter? Social media? God! That's all there is nowadays. There is nothing else besides Twitter and social media, so that must be all that's there. We do have, according to the ancient wisdom literatures, a reservoir of impressions. So, what to do about all that? Let's look at the first slide. Slide number three says everything is recorded and stored in your mind—in your subconscious mind. It's a storage place, and the aggregate of our mental impressions becomes what one professor at Carnegie Mellon (if I'm not incorrect—is that the professor that uses this phraseology of 'Default Mode Network', or is it another one?)—we've been in conversation with several academics lately, because we're doing a project of sharing ideas from the Bhagavad-gītā and ancient wisdom literatures with leading academics. In any case, one of them (and JM will find it) said this aggregate of mental impressions—recognized in modern psychology also as our subconscious mind's storage of thoughts, impressions, and feelings—creates what's called a 'Default Mode Network.' And drawing upon that Default Mode Network, we might engage in what's called 'mind scrolling.' You know our phones... does anybody have a phone near them right now? If your phone is within arm's reach, give me a sign. A few people? It's nearby, right? If you look into your phone, it seems to have an unlimited source of faces, impressions, ideas, and so forth. Our mind is kind of like that. Question: What are some practical things to do to our environment to optimize for absorption in the holy name? First of all, make your bed in the morning. Make sure it's completely neat and clean, and then get everything out of your way; that's a distraction to you. Get rid of stuff you don't need. Don't pile up a bunch of junk in your room. If you collected teddy bears when you were a kid, start giving them away and get down to simplicity in your environment. Don't over-collect anything. And then, get rid of your phone. Lock it up, put it in another room, or turn it off. That's drastic—turn it all the way off! And your mind's going, "Wait a minute, where's that little glow that I'm so used to putting in front of my face?" It's a bane on society nowadays; it's actually a travesty that this thing has been invented. Steve Jobs didn't let his kids have iPods or iPhones—do you know that? Because he knew the harmful nature of it. So, shut down your phone, lock it up, put it in another county, and then start chanting. Make an inventory of those things that distract you and then put them somewhere else, out of reach. Baby-proof your room. Your mind's like a little baby: "I want this, I want that." So, you know ahead of time: put it out of reach so that you have every advantage. Practice being bored. The mind is going, "I'm bored," and so you say, "Good. That's good. Be bored." Better that than to be scrolling. And if you practice being bored, sooner or later, you are going to break through. Try for breakthrough. Don't be like everybody else, just getting carried along. Even so-called "smart" people in the world—they don't have this practice. So we're really lucky, and we should take full advantage of it and try to get into absorption. And if you do, Kṛṣṇa will help you. The mercy is there. It's not impossible; it's very, very possible. It's just that we have to practice a lot. We have to practice daily, and we've got to want it and make it a discipline. Then the mind will conform, and Kṛṣṇa will.. At San Francisco airport we would go and sit down with people, and mostly we were looking for hippies—people with longer hair—because we thought nobody else would take it. We would sit down next to them like we were just sitting there randomly. And then we would turn to them and go, 'Hey, you want to see something far out?' They would go, 'What do you have?' We would say, 'No, no, this is really far out. Check this out.' And we would show them the pictures in the Kṛṣṇa book. Then, people would get attracted. So there has to be something to be attracted to. Lord Caitanya— gaura-vāṇī-pracāriṇe, Śrīla Prabhupāda came and said, 'Here is Lord Caitanya's teaching.' It's about describing the spiritual world and our relationship with the Supreme Person. Minus that—āruhya kṛcchreṇa paraṁ padaṁ tataḥ—everyone works hard for nothing and falls down from their imagined position of liberation. Conclusion: Lord Caitanya is the best. He preaches the Bhāgavatam perfectly because He is Kṛṣṇa. He has come to show people how to do this, how to become free from weakness of the heart. Anybody can do it. And the chanting part—Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate, because everything is contained within the mantra. It's a very specific path; it's not willy-nilly. He explains it very clearly. Śrīla Prabhupāda, understanding completely how to present it, brought it and gave it even to the Westerners—pāścātya-deśa-tāriṇe. The pāścātya-deśa: he came and gave the same teachings of Lord Caitanya. So now that Prabhupāda has left, He gave us the instruction to carry it on. Whatever or however we feel about ourselves or our abilities, we have to rise to the occasion and give mercy, especially in the Western countries. As I was saying this morning: bhārata-bhūmite haila manuṣya-janma yāra. janma sārthaka kari' kara para-upakāra. We have to do para-upakāra—the greatest benefit to human society—by distributing the message of Lord Caitanya, especially if you have any roots in Bhārata, it's our duty. This is really nice thing—anywhere you live, if you can come out. We didn't get a very good view of it today because there's cloud cover and all these buildings, but it's nice to come out and watch the sunrise every morning. It's a glorious thing. It's nice to chant a few mantras, like the Gayatri mantra, and there are others. We also find later on, after Caitanya Mahāprabhu, there was a deficit, and the teachings of Caitanya Mahāprabhu were not readily available. Even the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta—which was the ultimate of all teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the synthesis of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—was not readily available. So much so that Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, the great ācārya, was looking for the Caitanya-caritāmṛta and could not find a single copy anywhere. The teachings of Caitanya Mahāprabhu had been not just obscured, but also perverted in many different ways. So, we can't take for granted that the product is available. But now it is, and that's due to the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Lord Nityānanda, and the devotees who have carried on the tradition. This morning, on an early walk hoping to see the sunrise, it was a beautiful, painted sky, I was thinking of a lyric—or perhaps just an idiom—from modern American society: "Be true to your school." Is it a lyric from a song? Sounds like the Beach Boys or something. I was thinking about what a "school" is. A school is a consolidation of knowledge meant to uplift us; that's really the idea. Humans have an urge for that. They want to be in a place where they can take advantage of all the best knowledge the world has to offer. Nowadays, it has become a little more vocationally oriented, but previously, classical education had to do with bringing all the best books, teachings, and teachers together in one place. That's what universities were for: to get well-grounded in knowledge and gain a wider context and view of the world. Then, as one has a grounding in knowledge, one can also discern what is "the best." That's the idea of Vedānta. There's knowledge, and then there's the end of knowledge. Of course, if one just studies endlessly, it never comes to a conclusion. There are ways in which people say, "When are you going to graduate?" or "When are you going to finish?" You get a doctorate, then a post-doc—and then what do you have? What do you do after that? We're not meant simply to study endlessly and come to no conclusion. Even Socrates and Plato talked about coming to an ultimate conclusion. It's not that we just break everything down and are fascinated by the process; there should be a development of character (that's more Aristotle). We should also discern the purpose of life and what we should be aiming for as human beings—something to aim for. So all of that comes to bear in the teachings of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (SB 3.31.1), it is mentioned: karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ puṁso retaḥ-kaṇāśrayaḥ The living entity, who is helplessly controlled by the three modes of material nature, gets placed by daiva (higher control) into various material forms. For instance, right now we're in a body—check and see if you're still in it. You are there? Everyone okay? Yeah, we're in a body right now. We won't be here for very long. You know how long life is? It's about the length of a "reel." How long is a reel? Is there a clear definition? I can't figure it out if there's actually a definition of how long a reel is. Does anybody actually know? You guys don't look at the phone ever? You've never seen a reel, huh? Audience: "A minute or less." A minute or less. Okay, that's how long the human life is. It's about a minute or less. Could be ten seconds, even. And we're in many different "reels." So, karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa—we're placed in different bodies and we have a little "reel-life." Not R-E-A-L, but R-E-E-L-life. 'Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ'... we just wake up one day and everyone says, "Welcome to your new family!" And it could be a squirrel family. Or you could be a fish in the water. Fishes are in schools, and then there are flocks of birds. You can end up in a flock, or you can end up in a pack. Or crows—they are called a "murder." A "murder of crows." That's how you group them. So, we're forced by material nature. But gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ (SB 10.8.13) means Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, the Supreme, is not forced. He comes by choice. Or as Prabhupāda puts it in his book, Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He comes by His own "sweet will." We also have willpower, but it doesn't give us autonomy—complete autonomy. Kṛṣṇa has complete autonomy. He's abhijñaḥ (completely conscious of everything) and svarāṭ (completely independent). He can do as He wishes, never forced by anything or anyone. This is what Garga Muni said about the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, otherwise known as Bhagavān, the source of everything and all opulences. He said: "āsan varṇās trayo hy asya gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ." Tanūḥ means He has different bodies. Now, His body is different from the body of a soul that's placed in a material body. Our body is.. Everyone makes mistakes and material life is fraught with missteps. We always wish we had an undue button. Well, we do. And the mantra is, if you don't like what you've created for yourself—and we're not dead stones, we have volition—therefore, first step in recovery from any bad habit is to admit one's own part in it, and admitting that somehow or other, as Lord Caitanya said, "I have fallen into this material ocean," and wanting to undo it, we can realize that if we created it, we can uncreate it. But how do we do that? Well, Karma is a consequence. We start somewhere, and there's a sequence of events that unfolds. There are various ways in the Vedas to atone for missteps sins, but they don't fix the problem. We want to reform the tendency to commit sinful activities, and that, according to our tradition, is through sound—anāvṛttiḥ śabdāt. The last verse of the Vedānta-sūtra says we can become uncovered, or we can reverse the tendency for sinful activity by sound. And what is that tendency? If we look at various Vedic words, Sanskrit words, one that's relevant in this context is vāsanā. Comes from the root word vas which means to remain, and it literally means fragrance. You may notice, if you live in a—if you've ever been in a hotel room that's odoriferous, you may put some camphor in your room. So as you take the camphor out, the odoriferousness comes back. More than 70 Democrats in the House and Senate are pushing the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general to open a new investigation into the agency's “warrantless purchases of Americans' location data.” In a letter sent Tuesday, the lawmakers tasked IG Joseph Cuffari with investigating whether Immigration and Customs Enforcement is purchasing illegally obtained location data about Americans, how that data has been used, whether audits of employee access to uncover abuse are occurring and the policies governing data usage. “Location data is extremely sensitive, and can reveal someone's religion, their political views, medical conditions, addictions, and with whom they spend time,” the Democrats said. “It is for that reason that ordinarily, the government must obtain a warrant from a judge in order to demand such data from phone or technology companies.” The letter comes nearly three years after an initial IG report found that Customs and Border Protection, the Secret Service and ICE violated federal law through warrantless purchase and use of location data. As part of that 2023 report, the watchdog office said the DHS components did not adhere to established privacy policies, nor did they develop sufficient guardrails before procurement and use. The chief information officer at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced his departure Tuesday, ending his nearly five-year run at CISA. Robert Costello, an 18-year veteran of the Department of Homeland Security, posted about the move on LinkedIn.nCostello's tenure had recently grown turbulent, with conflicting accounts of whether the since-departed acting director of CISA, Madhu Gottumukkala, had tried to force him out. Costello last week received transfer orders for possible reassignment to another agency. “Serving as CIO at CISA has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” he said. “Together, we strengthened our cybersecurity posture, modernized critical systems, and built capabilities that will endure. In Episode 465 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Yale historian and Cold War scholar Odd Arne Westad, author of The Coming Storm, about why the pre-WWI era of multipolarity, imperial decline, and great power rivalry offers a far more instructive — and alarming — historical parallel to today's world than the Cold War, and what must be done to prevent the catastrophic descent into total war. The first hour explores what went wrong after the fall of the Soviet Union, how the end of the Bretton Woods system helped enable China's economic rise, and the striking structural parallels between the rise of Germany before 1914 and the rise of China today. Westad and Kofinas also examine the roles that Russia, India, and the United States play in this historical analogy, and how the failure to integrate rising powers into meaningful international frameworks — then and now — has set the stage for catastrophic conflict. The second hour takes a deeper look at the specific forces that could push the world from strategic rivalry to outright war, including the role of nuclear weapons in a multipolar order, the most dangerous flashpoints — from Taiwan to the Korean Peninsula to the South China Sea and China's border with India — and the underappreciated threat that terrorism could pose as a catalyst for great power conflict. They also examine the internal political dynamics that boxed leaders into impossible positions before 1914, how frighteningly familiar those constraints look today, and what Professor Westad believes must be done to stabilize the international system before the world faces consequences it is not remotely prepared to confront.
