And he said that Rūpānugas back everything up with śāstra. That means, when you back things up with śāstra, you are staying accountable. If we don't give the correlating śāstra, we go off road or speculate. Prabhupāda was very clear about it, and he set an example for this constantly. When he would give darśans, he had this phrase, "Find out that verse." Prabhupāda knew where the verse was, he even knew the verse, but he would tell his assistant to find out that verse, and they would scramble to find it, open the book, and find the verse, and then say it, because Prabhupāda was demonstrative about the fact that whatever statement he was making, he was following śāstra. And it can be that somebody will give a talk, and then they don't refer to it, and it leaves one hanging a little bit. So, on the positive side, Prabhupāda set the example, and he wanted us to be śāstra-sunipuṇa, which means to see the interconnectedness of all the śāstras, and be able to refer to śāstra whenever we bring up spiritual points. And he gave this example: He said, 'When you go to court as a lawyer, you have to be able to back up your legal theory from the law books. So, if you go in and you just say, 'I think this guy is guilty,' and the judge says, 'Why?' ' And you say "I don't know, I just feel like that,' then you don't have any case. You have to be able to show evidence and also show legal theory from the books.' Prabhupāda said, 'We should know these books, the canon that we've been given, the way a lawyer knows his books. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī finally reached Prayāga and met with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu for ten successive days. During this time, Vallabha Bhaṭṭa extended an invitation to the Lord with great respect. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu introduced Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī to Vallabha Bhaṭṭa. After this, a brāhmaṇa scholar named Raghupati Upādhyāya arrived and discussed Kṛṣṇa consciousness with the Lord. Kavirāja Gosvāmī then extensively describes the living condition of Śrī Rūpa and Sanātana at Vṛndāvana. During the ten days at Prayāga, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī was instructed by the Lord, who gave him the basic principles of the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu. The Lord then sent Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī to Vṛndāvana. The Lord Himself returned to Vārāṇasī and stayed at the home of Candraśekhara. When we come to see Kṛṣṇa and He glances on us and we see His beautiful form, then we are looking at the ultimate object of meditation. If we drive through Jaipur, we'll see many signboards, and everyone's trying to catch our attention to look at something. Maybe there's Coca-Cola, and they have a picture of some attractive-looking person drinking sugar water. They are not going to look so good in a few years, I guarantee you. And they are hoping that that will catch our attention and we'll say, "Okay, I would like to look like that." And everywhere we look, there's something for our eyes to fall upon. So the perfection of the eyes is to come and see Kṛṣṇa in the temple, and then chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. And these two things together—coming and seeing Kṛṣṇa, worshiping Kṛṣṇa, ringing the bell, bowing down, offering flowers, and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa—these are like two tracks on a train track. And where does the train go? Straight back to Goloka Vṛndāvana. So we are all on that train right now. Just look around—all the compartments are not even filled. We can put more people on this train! And the way the train goes, you load everybody on, and the way the train goes, you go see Kṛṣṇa, and then you chant, Hare Kṛṣṇa. And then the train takes you back home, back to God, and you forget about all the Coca-Cola signs in the world and all the clamor here in the material world. It's Much Ado About Nothing. There's nothing really going on in the material world that is of interest to the soul whatsoever. It's a big fake out. So we have this opportunity together that's quite exhilarating. Don't you think? We could do this for days! There are various levels of chanting, and two of them can be identified as attentive chanting and inattentive chanting. So, attentive chanting means that I'm very much aware that I'm chanting. I'm also hearing the syllables, aware of the name, the quality of it; there's some engagement of my mind. And inattentive chanting means it's like idling a car—the car is idling, and then you're doing something else. We can be chanting, the lips moving, and the sound going out, but my mind can be attached to another process. For instance, I might be thinking about the fact that I forgot to buy ginger and have to go to the store, or any other number of things—an email that I didn't send. That's where my mind is actually engaged, but the mouth is going, sound is coming, but I'm not attentive, not attached. Attention means ten. It's the same word that's in tendon. A tendon attaches the muscle to the bone. And when we have attention to the Holy Name, there is present engagement at the very moment, and I'm not thinking of something else. So, in practicing chanting, it can be very helpful to be just aware of which stage I'm in. Am I in the attentive state, or am I in the inattentive state? Not attentive to the Holy Name, or attentive to the Holy Name? And if I keep checking in with that and seeing, "Am I attaching to it? Am I engaging with the Holy Name with my mind right now, my awareness," then I'm likely to feel enlivened and not want to stop chanting. And if I'm not aware of it, if I'm thinking of something else, there is a point at which, during japa period, I'll think, "I've got to go. I just got to go somewhere," because I can't stay here. So, those are the two things that one can be aware of that can be really helpful. This makes it simple: just keep coming back to the attention, giving attention to the Holy Name. Just ask yourself, "What stage am I in? Attentive or inattentive?" Cc Madhya 18.1-66 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/18/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura gives the following information about Govinda-kuṇḍa. There is a village named Āniyora on Govardhana Hill, a little distance from the village of Paiṭha. Govinda-kuṇḍa is situated near here, and there are two temples to Govinda and Baladeva there. According to some, Queen Padmāvatī excavated this lake. In the Bhakti-ratnākara (Fifth Wave), the following statement is found: ei śrī-govinda-kuṇḍa-mahimā aneka ethā indra kaila govindera abhiṣeka “Govinda-kuṇḍa is exalted for its many spiritual activities. It was here that Indra, defeated by Lord Govinda, offered prayers to Him and bathed Him.” In the book Stavāvalī (Vraja-vilāsa-stava 74) the following verse is found: nīcaiḥ prauḍha-bhayāt svayaṁ sura-patiḥ pādau vidhṛtyeha yaiḥ  svar-gaṅgā-salilaiś cakāra surabhi-dvārābhiṣekotsavam govindasya navaṁ gavām adhipatā rājye sphuṭaṁ kautukāt  tair yat prādurabhūt sadā sphuratu tad govinda-kuṇḍaṁ dṛśoḥ “With humility caused by great fear, Indra took hold of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa and, in the company of a surabhi cow, performed His coronation festival by bathing Him with the waters of the heavenly Ganges River. Thus Lord Kṛṣṇa's kingship over the cows became splendidly manifest. I pray that Govinda-kuṇḍa, the lake created by that ceremonial bath, may eternally appear before my eyes.” Also, in the Mathurā-khaṇḍa it is stated: yatrābhiṣikto bhagavān maghonā yadu-vairiṇā govinda-kuṇḍaṁ taj-jātaṁ snāna-mātreṇa mokṣa-dam “Simply by bathing in Govinda-kuṇḍa, one is awarded liberation. Lorien Testard is a French musician and composer. He started his career as a guitar teacher, composing instrumental tracks for imaginary video games in his spare time. He began to upload them to his Soundcloud, and soon had a collection of more than fifty pieces online. His life changed when he shared one of the tracks in an indie game forum. Who's Rupa Goswami? We're known as Rūpānugas, followers of Rūpa Goswāmī. In the spiritual world. He has an intimate connection with Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa as a mañjarī. He's known as Rūpa Mañjarī, but here in this world, he shows very practically how we can perform the nine items of devotional service and water the seed of devotion, just as Lord Caitanya had taught, and we can have success in this life. To achieve that end, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who is his spiritual master and preceptor, taught him all about how to worship the Deity. And you'll find in Caitanya-caritāmṛta that Lord Caitanya gives instruction to Sanātana Goswāmī exactly how to establish a Deity, how to worship the Deity. He asked Sanātana Goswāmī, who is the brother of Rūpa Goswāmī, to write the entire chapter on Deity worship, and who teaches it? Kṛṣṇa. He tells about the different forms of the Deity you can worship. There are Deities from metal, wood, stone, jewels, paint, and in your mind. You can make a deity out of earth, and so forth. And then he tells the exact process, and that process has been passed down also through great sages like Nārada. Because of Nārada, we have the Nārada Pañcarātra, and we have the Pāñcarātrikī vidhi, which is the rules and regulations of how to worship Kṛṣṇa in the Deity form. So this was part of the process of bhakti-yoga, to worship the Deity, and Rūpa Goswāmī worshiped Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Govinda according to the instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. And here in Jaipur, they still follow that system. If we can be appreciative of what we have in every moment, instead of being expectant of one thing or another.. Right now, we can appreciate everything. It's possible to appreciate everything, veritably. We live in the middle of an ocean of miracles. The very fact that we're alive—we can perceive things, we can use our tongue to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. I saw a little chipmunk this morning when I was walking out on the driveway, and one of those little berries had fallen down from the tree and got smashed on the ground, and he was down there licking it with his tongue, and I could see his tongue. And I thought, 'Chipmunk tongue: it's pretty small, but he's getting a taste from that little berry goo on the ground.' And I was thinking, 'I'm glad I don't have a chipmunk tongue, because all he can do is taste a nut or a berry, but I can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.' That's a miracle. Something that Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākur points out: there are all kinds of tongues in the world. The human tongue is the only one that can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. So, if we just start where we are, Kṛṣṇa says that sve sve ′dhikaˉre yaˉ niṣṭhaˉ sa guṇaḥ parikıˉrtitaḥ (SB 11.20.26): appreciate what you have right now. He read too many books, and he got confused. And then he met Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was traveling in East Bengal, and he asked him, "What should I do?" He had had a dream that he would meet an effulgent personality. And so, by the Lord's arrangement, he met Caitanya Mahāprabhu as Nimāi Paṇḍit. He had traveled with his students. He amassed wealth. He went and taught everybody, and dominated all the debates, and became famous in East Bengal. And then along the way, he met Tapana Miśra, and Tapana Miśra submitted his sad story: that he was confused. He had just read everything. One should not, Rūpa Gosvāmī says, become a bookworm and read all kinds of books just to have some scriptural advantage over others—to defeat them with your extra special verses that nobody has ever heard of. So Mahāprabhu told him, "You should chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." He took him into his fold. And then, inexplicably, He sent him to Banaras. And everyone said, "What? You got a new bhakta, and you're going to send him to Banaras?" Little did they know that Mahāprabhu was going to circle back there, and He would meet him there and have a big part in his līlā. But that's the way He works. That's the Tapana Miśra story. Audience: I can just imagine Tapana Miśra just there in Banaras, and then Caitanya Mahāprabhu just appears there in this scene. It must have been life-changing. HG Vaisesika Dasa: That's the life-changing nature of surrendering to Mahāprabhu. He takes us on a magical mystery journey, I won't say tour, and it's all His mercy. Rādhikā Ramaṇa Prabhu gave this masterful class In New Vrindāban that was about prayer. I mean, what class has he has ever given that's not masterful?. And he said, when he was a kid and he was learning to read from the Bhāgavatam, he and his brother would listen to their parents read Bhāgavatam to them, they would get absorbed in the stories, and then when the prayers would start, they would think, 'Oh, not again!' Because sometimes the prayers seem—to those who are eager to hear Līlā stories—they can even seem tedious. But he said after a while, when he matured more, he realized that these were the most important part, because it was the response the devotees were having to Kṛṣṇa and what was in their heart. And he was talking about how important it is for us to hear the prayers, but also how important it is for us to pray, because we may have a general sense of our determination. But then when we voice it to Kṛṣṇa, we have to articulate it and really think about it. And then we also have the sense of, 'I'm saying this to Kṛṣṇa,' and it becomes more personal. In general, that's the juncture at which we meet Kṛṣṇa is when we decide that we're going to be serious and determined. Because somebody, as we hear from the ten offenses, somebody may maintain material attachments even after understanding so many instructions on the matter. One of my godbrothers used to say, 'Kṛṣṇa doesn't see what you are offering as much as he sees what you're holding behind your back.' If we become determined, and at least come to the point of saying that, 'Kṛṣṇa, you know what I'm holding behind my back? Please make me give it up.' Because I was very pleased with their behavior, I told them, ‘Although you are both very much exalted, you consider yourselves inferior, and because of this, Kṛṣṇa will very soon deliver you.' Purport Such are the qualifications of a pure devotee. Materially one may be very opulent, experienced, influential and educated, but if one still thinks himself lower than straw in the street, one attracts the attention of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu or Lord Kṛṣṇa. Although Mahārāja Pratāparudra was a king, he took up a broom to cleanse the road for Lord Jagannātha's ratha (chariot). Because of this humble service, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was very pleased with the King, and for that reason the Lord embraced him. According to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's instructions, a devotee should never be puffed up by material power. He should know that material power is the result of one's past good activities (karma) and is consequently transient. At any moment all one's material opulence can be finished; therefore a devotee is never proud of such opulence. He is always humble and meek, considering himself lower than a piece of straw. Because of this, the devotees are eligible to return home, back to Godhead. So these prayers were offered by Jayadeva Gosvami. One Vaisnava poet advented about seven hundred years before Lord Caitanya's appearance. He was a great devotee, and his specific poetry, Gita-govinda, is very famous all over the world. Gita- govinda. Gita-govinda is the subject matter of Krsna playing on flute about Radharani. That is the subject matter of Gita-govinda. The same poet, Jayadeva Gosvami, has offered this prayer, pralaya-payodhi-jale-dhrtavan asivedam. He says, “My dear Lord, when there was devastation within this universe, everything was filled with water. At that time You saved the Vedas stacked in a boat, and You held the boat from being drowned in the water in the shape of a big fish.” This fish first of all was caught in the waterpot just like a small fish. Then it enlarged, and the fish was kept in a bigger water reservoir. In this way, the fish was increasing. Then the fish informed that “Devastation is coming. Although the great Lord Brahmä, in his trance of samädhi, is unable to see even a particle of the effulgence emanating from the tips of the nails of Your lotus feet, still I desire this vision, for I have heard of the wonderful waves of Your mercy. 3.bhaktir udañcati yadyapi mādhava! na tvayi mama tila-mātrī parameśvaratā tad api tavādhika durghaṭa-ghaṭana-vidhātrī O Mädhava! Cc Madhya 16.65-149 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/16/ ------------------------------------------------------------ What I have noted is, some people are more oriented towards Vāṇī and some are more oriented towards Vapu, naturally. I have seen it in God-brothers, and others have observed it also, and partly situationally. Brahmananda, for instance, and others were so... of course, they were there as the situation unfolded with Prabhupāda. But when he left, if you tell them, "Well, just take shelter of Vāṇī," it's almost like when Kṛṣṇa told the Gopis, "You know, just meditate." They couldn't grab that, because they were just so dependent on Prabhupāda's personal presence in their life. And there are some that, it seems to me, are more inclined to that. Then, of course, to your question, it's a matter of realization, because when we are serving, and while we are serving intensely and we feel the reciprocation of our spiritual master and Kṛṣṇa from within, then we may have a taste to do that more. I mean, that's kind of one of the most obvious statements anybody ever made, but that's what happens. I remember circa 1975 in Māyāpur, when Rohiṇīsūta and Maṇidhar—they were two distributors who were prolific in book distribution—and I think it was Rohiṇīsūta who didn't come. Maybe both of them didn't come to the festival. Prabhupāda asked where they were, and they said they wanted to stay and do more. And Prabhupāda approved of it, even though he had told everybody he wanted everyone to come to Māyāpur and Vṛndāvan, because he understood that they had a taste and they wanted to do it. Cc Madhya 15.170-277 Once you are facing Māyā, then you feel fear and you're disoriented, Budha. But if you're intelligent, ābhajet taṁ bhaktyaikayeśaṁ guru-devatātmā—you should turn back towards Kṛṣṇa through the medium of the spiritual master, who you should consider to be your worshipful deity and your very life and soul. The verse says so. The implication is that one becomes free from that sense of fear that arises from illusion. Like animals are afraid because they're in this existential state of feeling they could be killed at any minute—because they're in illusion. They think they're their body. Dvitīya means the living being thinks he's his body, there's something separate from Kṛṣṇa. So that fear is allayed by taking shelter of the spiritual master and giving one's full attention to Kṛṣṇa. But we discussed last time about the other kind of fear. In the prayers Prahlāda Mahārāja offers to Lord Narasiṁhadev, he says, "trasto 'smy ahaṁ kṛpaṇa-vatsala duḥsahogra-saṁsāra-cakra-kadanād grasatāṁ praṇītaḥ," that I'm not afraid of You, Lord Narasiṁha, like everybody else, but I am afraid of Your Māyā, and that I could fall back into it. So one should be afraid of that. And there's a lot of commentary about that in the Tenth Canto, Second Chapter, because it's mentioned that Devakī was afraid. And then Viśvanātha Cakravartī said, "Very good. You should be afraid. Why are they offering flowers with no scent? or whatever thing I can find. And I remember Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi. You know, the last story in the Caitanya-bhāgavata, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi, who's a paramahaṁsa, he goes to Odana Ṣaṣṭhī, where the Lord gets new clothes. So the pujārīs had put new clothes on Him, but they're still starched, which means they were off the shelf. They just took them off the shelf and offered them to the Lord directly. And he was watching, and he became disgusted, "How dare these pujārīs dress the Lord with the starched garments that are off the shelf!" That night, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi had a dream that Lord Balarāma and Lord Jagannātha came to him, and they said, "How dare you criticize our pujārīs?" And in the dream, they started slapping his face back and forth. The next day, his face was swollen from being smacked. I remember that sometimes when I think, "Didn't they get the memo? It doesn't go there; it goes here." And I think, like, "Hey, these guys have a million times more devotion than you do. Don't try to second-guess who they are." But the reason I ask also is because if you're in a position to find fault, like if you're a temple president, you're free to find fault with—of course, you have to administer your advice systematically in such a way it doesn't disturb people's minds—but it's your duty to walk around and say, "How come there's a crack there?" Like Śivarāma Mahārāja, if you see him in Hungary, he walks around with a white glove, and he'll sweep his hand across a door top or whatever, and say, "Hey, clean this!" So you have to find fault in those cases, but you have to just fine-pick your battles. Like what you said in the beginning, it was one of the Gauḍīya ācāryas had once said. This is in recent times. He said, when asked by an outsider, "What is your religion?" He said, "My religion is to find fault with myself, find my own faults, and to rectify them." So that's a project. When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted to go to Vṛndāvana, Rāmānanda Rāya and Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya indirectly presented many obstructions. In due course of time, all the devotees of Bengal visited Jagannātha Purī for the third year. This time, all the wives of the Vaiṣṇavas brought many types of food, intending to extend invitations to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu at Jagannātha Purī. When the devotees arrived, Caitanya Mahāprabhu sent His blessings in the form of garlands. In that year also, the Guṇḍicā temple was cleansed, and when the Cāturmāsya period was over, all the devotees returned to their homes in Bengal. Caitanya Mahāprabhu forbade Nityānanda to visit Nīlācala every year. Questioned by the inhabitants of Kulīna-grāma, Caitanya Mahāprabhu again repeated the symptoms of a Vaiṣṇava. Vidyānidhi also came to Jagannātha Purī and saw the festival of Oḍana-ṣaṣṭhī. We should have every year the 'Best Purport Awards.' This is what I'm going to enter. (HG Vaisesika Dasa) Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī wants to point out that nothing could compare to the Lord's mercy toward Mahārāja Pratāparudra; therefore he uses the word dekha (“just see”) and caitanyera kṛpā-mahābala (“how powerful is the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu”). This is also confirmed by Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī: yat-kāruṇya-kaṭākṣa-vaibhava-vatām (Caitanya-candrāmṛta 5). Even a little of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mercy serves as a great asset for spiritual advancement. Therefore the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement must be spread through the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When Rūpa Gosvāmī experienced the mercy and magnanimity of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, he said: namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya- nāmne gaura-tviṣe namaḥ “I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, who is more magnanimous than any other avatāra, even Kṛṣṇa Himself, because He is bestowing freely what no one else has ever given — pure love of Kṛṣṇa.” Śrīla Locana dāsa Ṭhākura has also sung, parama karuṇa, pahuṅ dui jana, nitāi-gauracandra: “The two brothers Nitāi and Gaura are so kind that no one can compare to Them.” Similarly, Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura has sung: vrajendra-nandana yei, śacī-suta haila sei, balarāma ha-ila nitāi, dīna-hīna yata chila, hari-nāme uddhārila, tā'ra sākṣī jagāi-mādhāi “Just to deliver all the sinful persons of this age by propagating the chanting of the holy name, Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Balarāma have advented as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Nityānanda Prabhu. Jagāi and Mādhāi are evidence of Their success.” Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's special mission is the deliverance of all fallen souls in Kali-yuga. Devotees of Kṛṣṇa must persistently seek the favor and mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to become fit to return home, back to Godhead. Then chanting one name is sufficient to rescue a living being from all sinful reactions. Such a person who chants the holy name of the Lord offenselessly is very important and woshipable. Indeed, the nine devotional processes, beginning with śravaṇa and kīrtana, can all be attained at once if one simply chants the holy name of the Lord offenselessly. In this regard, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī states in his book Bhakti-sandarbha (173): yadyapi anyā bhaktiḥ kalau kartavyā, tadā; kīrtanākhya-bhakti-saṁyogenaiva. Out of the nine processes of devotional service, kīrtana is very important. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī therefore instructs that the other processes, such as arcana, vandana, dāsya and sakhya, should be executed, but they must be preceded and followed by kīrtana, the chanting of the holy name. We have therefore introduced this system in all of our centers. Arcana, ārati, bhoga offering, Deity dressing and decoration are all preceded and followed by the chanting of the holy name of the Lord — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. Actually, no one should desire to become the direct servant of the Lord. That is not a very good idea. When Prahlāda Mahārāja was offered a benediction by Nṛsiṁhadeva, Prahlāda rejected all kinds of material benedictions, but he prayed to become the servant of the servants of the Lord. When Dhruva Mahārāja was offered a benediction by Kuvera, the treasurer of the demigods, Dhruva could have asked for unlimited material opulence, but he simply asked for the benediction of becoming the servant of the servants of the Lord. Kholāvecā Śrīdhara was a very poor man, but when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted to give him a benediction, he also prayed to the Lord to be allowed to remain a servant of the servants of the Lord. The conclusion is that being the servant of the servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the highest benediction one can desire. Cc Madhya 15.109-169 ------------------------------------------------------------ I was just thinking this morning, when I was chanting my japa, the first time I heard of the Hare Krishna mantra. As I really relish that memory, just hearing it and thinking, "That is really some mysterious thing they're doing." Then I remember the first time I said "Hari Krishna" was to the devotees. They were walking away from the Harinām on the UC Berkeley campus. I just happened to be down there taking a music lesson, walking with my brother, and we saw them walking away from the Harinām. One of them had a mṛdaṅga slung over his back. And to impress my brother, I shouted out to the devotee. I said, "Hare Krishna!" The devotee turned around, and he looked at us with such enthusiasm; he said, "Hare Krishna!" And it was almost written in his countenance that, "Okay, boy, you blew it because we own you now." My brother actually looked at me and said, "What did you do?" Although there's fine print, the fact of the matter is, it's very direct. Kṛṣṇa is in his name 100%, 110%, because, as Rūpa Gosvāmī says: vācyaḿ vācakam ity udeti bhavato nāma svarūpa-dvayam (Namaṣṭakam verse 6) dṛśaḿ tattvāndhānām api diśati bhakti-praṇayinīm (Namaṣṭakam verse 3) That is, he says, "Okay, Kṛṣṇa and his name are the same 100%," but he goes, "No, wait a minute. The Holy Name is 110%." Because he said, "Kṛṣṇa, we may leave Kṛṣṇa, turn our back on him, but the Holy Name comes after us, and the Holy Name is more merciful." He said, "That's the difference." He said, "Same, same, but," as they say in Thailand, "same, same, but different." So the Holy Name is same, same, but different, because it is same 100%. But then 110% means the Holy Name is more merciful than Kṛṣṇa, because he just enters into your ear. People walking down the street, they are defenseless. When we do Harinām, we watch, and we see even the dogs go by, and they're a little freaked out, usually, because kartālas are intense. But still, the Holy Name is going in, and we think, "Okay, doggy, we'll see you soon, somewhere." And then, the people—the looks on their faces! It's the greatest show on earth to see how the Holy Name is entering their ears, entering their hearts, and then rearranging everything with the first hearing of the name, wherever somebody is starting from, whatever platform. Then that process: it's effective. It's always effective. And even if you can't see it at first, just like radiation—you say, "I didn't feel anything"—but then the symptoms will come, because Kṛṣṇa is all-powerful. Cc Madhya 14.174-257 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/14/advanced-view/ Dressing himself as a Vaiṣṇava, Mahārāja Pratāparudra entered the garden at Balagaṇḍi alone and began reciting verses from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. He then took the opportunity to massage the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. The Lord, in His ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa, immediately embraced the King and thus bestowed mercy upon him. When there was an offering of prasādam in the garden, Lord Caitanya also partook of it. After this, when Lord Jagannātha's ratha car stopped moving, King Pratāparudra called for many elephants to pull it, but they were unsuccessful. Seeing this, Lord Caitanya began to push the car from behind with His head, and the car began moving. Then the devotees began pulling the car with ropes. Near the Guṇḍicā temple is a place known as Āiṭoṭā. This place was fixed up for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to rest in. When Lord Jagannātha was seated at Sundarācala, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu saw it as Vṛndāvana. He performed sporting pastimes in the water of the lake known as Indradyumna. For nine continuous days during Ratha-yātrā, the Lord remained at Sundarācala, and on the fifth day He and Svarūpa Dāmodara observed the pastimes of Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune. During that time, there was much talk about the pastimes of the gopīs. When the ratha was again being drawn and the chanting resumed, two devotees from Kulīna-grāma — Rāmānanda Vasu and Satyarāja Khān — were requested to bring silk ropes every year for the Ratha-yātrā ceremony. Welcome to our next airing of a CP LIVE* conversation, this time in celebration of Artober in conversation with Sofia Laçin and Hennessy Christophel, of LA-based Studio Tutto. On highway underpasses, school walls, public park welcome centers, and city water towers, the epic hand-crafted murals of Studio Tutto tell visual stories of invisible nature to help people connect and become familiar with what is surrounding us, but we often do not notice. Their “thoughtful site-specific pieces invite and incite softness and meaningful connection between people and place, and in so doing, they are “optimistically shaping the way we see ourselves and the world around us.” The interview and gathering for it took place around this same time last year, when Studio Tutto's Mural “Invisible Neighbors” was completed and unveiled for the first time as a centerpiece for the Welcome Center at LA's storied Griffith Park, one of the largest municipal parks embracing urban wilderness in the United States. With over 4200 acres of both natural chaparral and landscaped parkland, it is a complex and interesting refuge for humans, wildlife, and plant communities. Situated in the arid eastern Santa Monica Mountain Range, the park features varied topography and diverse plant communities, including coastal sage scrub, oak, and native walnut woodlands, as well as riparian creek vegetation and deep canyons. It is an ongoing experiment in how humans and wildlands intersect, interface, and, in the best-case scenarios, strive for a compassionate coexistence. One celebrated example of this struggle is the life of a mountain lion who spent his adult life in the park, became beloved by the world, and ultimately died there. When Studio Tutto was commissioned to create one of their powerful murals for the reopening of Griffith Park's historic welcome center, after much research and thought, their mural became “An artistic [visual] altar to the spirit of P-22 [and his last wild place].” The mandate for me in these CP LIVE experiences and interviews is to not only give voice to (as the podcast always does), but actually make visible the many diverse connections animated by the gardening impulse everywhere. What this conversation makes visible to me, and I hope to all listeners, is that gardening is a multifaceted act – it is physical, it is intellectual, it is artistic and imaginative, it is tangible, and symbolic. It is one lens and method by which we know nature, and by which we participate in the nature of the world, and the nature of ourselves. Through their larger-than-life art (or maybe it's art trying to meet a truer scale of life's enormity?), and the nature it brings into our view, Studio Tutto is growing, painting, and weaving the beauty of the sacred presence of nature back into everyday human places, and they are weaving humans back into nature's places, like Griffith Park. Are artists gardening our world? These artists are. The more we see and support the incredible diversity of who Gardeners are, what they grow, and what Gardens mean, the better we grow our world. After giving up the company of the gopīs in Vṛndāvana, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the son of Mahārāja Nanda, engaged in His pastimes at Dvārakā. When Kṛṣṇa went to Kurukṣetra with His brother and sister and others from Dvārakā, He again met the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is rādhā-bhāva-dyuti-suvalita, that is, Kṛṣṇa Himself assuming the part of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in order to understand Kṛṣṇa. Lord Jagannātha-deva is Kṛṣṇa, and Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu is Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Caitanya Mahāprabhu's leading Lord Jagannātha toward the Guṇḍicā temple corresponded to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī's leading Kṛṣṇa toward Vṛndāvana. Śrī Kṣetra, Jagannātha Purī, was taken as the kingdom of Dvārakā, the place where Kṛṣṇa enjoys supreme opulence. But He was being led by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to Vṛndāvana, the simple village where all the inhabitants are filled with ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa. Śrī Kṣetra is a place of aiśvarya-līlā, just as Vṛndāvana is the place of mādhurya-līlā. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's following at the rear of the ratha indicated that Lord Jagannātha, Kṛṣṇa, was forgetting the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. Although Kṛṣṇa neglected the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, He could not forget them. Thus in His opulent Ratha-yātrā, He was returning to Vṛndāvana. In the role of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was examining whether the Lord still remembered the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana.
