Thirty years ago, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, a car accident set off four days of unrest. Two people died. Dozens were injured. Hundreds were arrested. In this Pineapple Street Studios series, journalist Collier Meyerson explores what came to be known as the “Crown Heights Riot.” It’s a story about immigration, New York City’s first Black mayor, the rise of Rudy Giuliani, and the Lubavitch Jewish and Caribbean-American communities sitting at the center of it all. To Meyerson, the Crown Heights Riot can help us unlock and understand so many of our modern dilemmas: from police violence and racism to the persistence of antisemitism.

The Love Thy Neighbor: Four Days in Crown Heights That Changed New York is an intriguing podcast that delves into a forgotten story from contemporary history. The writers do an excellent job of including the perspectives of both sides, allowing for a nuanced understanding of the conflict. The narrator's storytelling is easy to follow and sincere, drawing listeners in and keeping them engaged throughout the series. Overall, it is a podcast that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the host's personal connections to the communities involved in the conflict. Her familiarity with these communities adds depth and authenticity to her storytelling, as she brings in different opinions and experiences. She does not seek to simplify the conflict but rather shares its many layers, helping listeners understand the complexity of the situation. This approach allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the events that unfolded.

However, there were moments where I felt a slight bias in favor of the Jewish community. While the host does her best to present an objective story, there were instances where her personal connections seemed to influence her perspective. It would have been beneficial to have even more diverse voices and perspectives included to ensure a truly balanced narrative.

In conclusion, The Love Thy Neighbor: Four Days in Crown Heights That Changed New York is an informative and captivating podcast that sheds light on a little-known event in history. Despite some minor biases, the depth of research, empathy in storytelling, and embracing of nuance make it a worthwhile listen. I look forward to more nuanced storytelling from the host and highly recommend this podcast to anyone interested in learning about complex historical events that continue to impact our society today.
