During the Cold War, tests were conducted on soldiers and unsuspecting cities. Anything from biological spraying to nuclear tests in Nevada, the spread of fallout to parts of Utah, which resulted in various cancers in people downwind from the test. The majority of U.S. nuclear tests occurred in the middle of the Western desert, at the Nevada Test Site. This site is now within the parameters of the Area 51, Groom Lake facility in the Nevada Desert, an hour and a half from Las Vegas. Hundreds of men in the service of their country have died because of this invisible enemy, and this sends a very poignant message. Hundreds of years before Jesus came into the world, the prophets spoke of him as one that would bring peace. They said things like that he would be the "Prince of Peace" and that "of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end." (Isaiah 9:6-7) Zechariah 9:10 said that "he shall speak peace to the nations." Micah 5:2 speaks of a ruler that would come forth from Bethlehem and it says that "he shall be their peace."In Ephesians 2:14, Paul says that Jesus is himself our peace. He is the one who reconciles all peoples both to God and to one another in his body, the church. This is especially relevant in our day as the world around us calls for peace and for unity amongst a very diverse humanity. The problem, however, is that the world fails to recognize that true peace can only be found in a person (Jesus Christ), as Ephesians 2:14 emphasizes. It is only as diverse people are united in one body (the Church) and to one Savior (Jesus) that true peace can be found. Thankfully, God has promised to bring people from every tribe and tongue and nation into this one body and under this one Savior! Berman explores how Israel's currently softened position is playing out on the global stage and compares it to previous cycles in which Israel allowed more aid into the Strip. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to press US President Donald Trump on ending “the unspeakable suffering” in Gaza when they meet at the US president’s golf resort in Scotland today, according to a Downing Street spokesperson says. The meeting at Turnberry, southwestern Scotland, comes as European countries express growing alarm at the situation in Gaza. What is Trump currently saying about the war in Gaza? Foreign Ministry director general Eden Bar-Tal summoned France’s deputy ambassador Mikaël Griffon for a reprimand at ministry headquarters in Jerusalem yesterday, over French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement last week that Paris would recognize a Palestinian state. During the dressing down, he accused France of undermining talks for a hostage release deal with Hamas, as well as future negotiations with the Palestinian Authority. Berman delves into the idea that all the pressure on Israel to end the war -- and this "prize" of a state to the Palestinian people -- could harm the ceasefire negotiations and drag out the war with an emboldened Hamas. In the summer of 2020, Lebanon had already been experiencing some of its worst days, due to a deepening financial crisis and the global pandemic. On August 4, things took a much darker turn. Hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate detonated at the Beirut port, ripping through the capital and wreaking havoc. More than 200 people were killed and thousands injured. It destroyed homes, overwhelmed the city and shattered livelihoods. This week, to mark the fifth anniversary of the Beirut explosion, Beyond the Headlines is revisiting a mini-series published in 2021, a year after the incident. It's a four-part investigation that follows the events before, during and after that fateful day. So how did the dangerous material end up in Beirut's port in the first place? It starts with a ship and its Russian captain, Boris Prokoshev. In the first episode of the series, Prokoshev speaks about the ill-fated voyage from the start, how a detour brought him and his crew to Beirut, and how they got stuck there.
