In Episode 167 of The Intentional Clinician podcast, Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews child psychiatrist Dr. Frank Putnam, MD about his groundbreaking assertion that prevention of child maltreatment is the single most powerful way to improve the mental and physical health of our nation. The conversation likely explores Dr. Putnam's decades of research through the Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS), which has followed sexual abuse survivors for over 35 years and revealed that childhood sexual abuse causes accelerated biological aging, increasing the risk for early onset of physical and mental conditions usually associated with late life. Drawing from his new book *Old Before Their Time*, Dr. Putnam discusses how childhood maltreatment is the largest preventable cause of certain major mental illnesses, interpersonal violence, and much hard drug abuse, while addressing the wide-ranging mental, physical, and social consequences that extend across generations.  Dr. Frank W. Putnam, MD, is a professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and an emeritus professor of pediatrics and child psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He co-founded the pioneering Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS) in 1987 with the late Dr. Penelope K. Trickett, a longitudinal study that has followed female incest victims and comparison groups across three generations for over 35 years. FBI Director Kash Patel reportedly said publicly that the bureau was locked out of the Nancy Guthrie investigation during the most critical window. The Pima County Sheriff's Office disputes that characterization. What isn't disputed is that four days passed — and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer says digital evidence, biological material, and witness memory all degrade fastest in exactly that window. The alleged delay may have cost this case evidence it can never recover.Coffindaffer and behavioral analysis chief Robin Dreeke join Tony Brueski to examine the full behavioral picture once you strip away the noise. The ransom notes went to media outlets, not the family — a detail that signals opportunistic fraud, not an operational kidnapper communicating with leverage. The Bitcoin demands were reportedly never followed through. The person on Nancy's porch allegedly tried to hide the doorbell camera using foliage ripped from her own yard and wore a visor and gloves that allegedly didn't fit properly. Coffindaffer says the behavior looks like improvisation dressed up as planning.Robin raises the motive question the public hasn't resolved. Nancy Guthrie is 84 years old, medically vulnerable, and requires medication. She is not a rational target for a ransom operation. Was this allegedly about money? About Savannah Guthrie? About something else entirely? Whether Nancy allegedly recognized her abductor may be the single most important behavioral question in this case.Coffindaffer also confronts the investigative cost of noise in a nationally covered case — false leads, internet theories, and media speculation contaminating the evidence that actually matters. Part two with Diana Schutz picks up right where the real war stories begin.This time, Diana pulls back the curtain on her Comico years , stepping into the editorial trenches at a publisher that, for a moment, looked like it was riding high. She talks candidly about the challenge of wrangling the Robotech comics line,but also the joy of editing Johnny Quest, working with the legendary Doug Wildey and the always inventive William Messner-Loebs. She breaks down why that book worked . Then comes the sobering part: Comico's collapse. Diana explains that it wasn't simply bad luck — it was a fundamental misunderstanding of how the newsstand distribution system actually operated. In the early direct-market dominance era, that mistake was fatal. A harsh lesson in the business side of comics that too many creative-driven companies learned the hard way in the '80s.From there, Diana recounts her earlier blink-and-you'll-miss-it four-day stint at Marvel Comics as an assitant editor for Ann Nocenti , working under Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter. She doesn't hedge. The rigid, top-down editorial structure simply wasn't a fit for her. Diana closes this segment by giving heartfelt credit to her then-partner Bob Schreck for helping her land back on her feet, find new opportunities, and stay in the industry after some serious professional gut punches. When Tony Bullimore's yacht capsized in the violent Southern Ocean during the 1996-97 Vendée Globe race, rescuers feared the worst.
