It's becoming more and more difficult to faithfully follow Jesus in the world today. Racism, partisan politics, consumerism, Nationalism, ecological degradation, social media fights, and misinformation of all kinds - what is a Jesus Follower to do? Thankfully, we have ancient letters preserved for us in the New Testament that give us a glimpse into the challenges the earliest Christians faced in their efforts to faithfully follow Jesus in a culture that was pagan to the core. These New Testament writings can help us learn to faithfully follow Jesus today, by paying close attention to how these earliest Christians did this in the 1st century. During the months of September, October, and November, Markey Church will be taking a deep dive into the Letter to the Philippians. Written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Philippi, this letter invites us to consider how the story of Jesus, and the Kingdom of God, is designed to shape us more deeply than any other story. In preparation for this new series, you're invited to read through the Letter to the Philippians and to read a bit about the background to that letter, including watching this overview video from our friends at The Bible Project.

Pastor David Rice teaches part five of this six part series. The Bible is often regarded as a book, but in reality, it is a collection of books, 66 in total, written by dozens of authors, over a span of thousands of years. It is made up of multiple genres (history, poetry, and narrative accounts, to name a few), but when taken as a whole, Christian people are invited to consider that the Bible is telling a story. And not just any story, but God’s story of creation, deformation, redemption, and renewal, that is still in motion today. During this series, we’ll take a closer look at what the Bible is, what the Bible isn’t, and what in the world we are supposed to do with this strange and wonderful story.

Today, Pastord David Rice teaches the final piece of this four part series. If the Gospel is as big and all-encompassing as the earliest Christians seemed to believe, then the implications for what God wants to redeem in our lives extend far beyond our current spiritual connection to God, and our future reality with God. The Gospel has much to say about our emotional redemption and our physical redemption. But often this redemption looks different than we think or expect it should. During this series we’ll explore a holistic approach to discipleship, looking at how God works through the rewiring of our brains in order to bring about hope, healing, and redemption to our spiritual, emotional, and physical lives. We’ll explore how God’s Spirit works in our lives, even when our physical pain persists. And hopefully, we’ll see how God’s Spirit wants to work to redeem our whole lives.

The cultural landscape is changing so rapidly (and has been over the past 20-30 years) that the old ways of holding our faith together are no longer working for many people. As our culture becomes more polarized - as Christian people become more enculturated - how do we remain faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, while having some sense of fidelity to the people around us who we love, serve, and long to bless. A Resilient Faith will help us make sense of what it means to be a “Third Way” people in a culture addicted to either/or thinking and believing. We’ll look at what it takes to have faith in a culture that is becoming less Christian by the day, and how we can practice fidelity to the Gospel and faithfulness to Jesus and God’s coming Kingdom headed into the future.
