Lisa Schlosberg, LMSW, HHC, CPT, RYT is a trauma informed online coach for people struggling with weight loss and overall health.  Her first hand experience with the struggles of weight and health, from childhood obesity to extreme under-eating later in life, showed her how badly the diet and weight loss industry needed to be re-examined.  After trying every diet and weight loss program in existence, Lisa realized that the fundamental lack in every single one of these programs was a profound ignorance to how emotional needs manifest physically in cravings and addictions.  If the biggest problem you have with food is that you're an emotional eater, it's not a problem you have with food; it's a question about how you're coping – or not – with your emotions.  That realization led Lisa to found Out of the Cave and help everyone find true health.Out of the Cave: https://www.outofthecave.health/Work with Joy: https://withjoyhs.wordpress.com/Work with Laura: https://lcollinslcsw.com/Music by PathfireOpening by Ian LevensteinEdited by Hahnacity

In recognition of Maternal Mental Health Month I am re-sharing this 2023 conversation with the founders of The Motherhood Center in NYC. With Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS) being the #1 complication associated with birth in the US and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this remains a critical conversation. It's not just you. You're not crazy. You're not a bad mom. You're not alone. These are words and deep beliefs that resonate through and form the backbone of today's guests, Catherine Birndorf, MD, and Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW. Catherine and Paige are dedicated to changing the perinatal mental health terrain, and they do it through The Motherhood Center, a place of radical acceptance, nurturance, and individual and group support. On today's episode, we pull back the curtain on motherhood and redefine what is considered "normal" and "typical". With PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) being the #1 complication associated with birth and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this is a critical conversation. On today's episode, we unpack why it's so important that we talk more about these conditions, how to do your best to prevent PMADs, and what to do if you or someone you love has symptoms. Aviva, Paige, and Catherine discuss: The definition of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) and the different diagnoses that fall under the PMAD umbrella What PMAD taboos still exist today, why this needs to change, and how Roe v. Wade affects these taboos Paige and Catherine's personal stories with perinatal mood disorders and what brought them to the point of specializing in PMADS and opening the motherhood center The kinds of physical and psychological feelings and symptoms associated with PMADs and signs birthing people and their providers should watch out for Why we need to move in the direction of making it mandatory for OB-GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and any providers who come in contact with newer expecting mothers to begin educating their patients about PMADS and screening for symptoms The effects of the pandemic, social isolation, and potential cultural contributors on PMADS The role of medication and psychotherapy in treating conditions For more information or to reach out visit themotherhoodcenter.com or call (212) 335-0034. Episode 148: Recipes That Heal—Creativity, Courage, & Community Care with Elisa Pérez-Arellano, LMSW What does it take to turn pain into purpose—and how can creativity, food, and cultural traditions transform how we approach mental health? In this episode of The Innovative Therapist Podcast, I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Elisa Pérez-Arellano, LMSW—founder of Inclusive Empowerment Services and the visionary behind Recetas que Sanan (Recipes That Heal), a wellness initiative that reduces stigma and improves access to healing resources. Elisa's story is one of incredible resilience, innovation, and heart. From her lived experiences as an immigrant and survivor of teen dating violence to creating a therapeutic cooking show with her husband, she's inspiring new ways to connect, heal, and build community through authenticity and cultural wisdom. Here's what we cover in this deep, powerful, and inspiring conversation: ✨ Elisa's journey immigrating from Mexico to the U.S. at age 16✨ The trauma and resilience that shaped her as a therapist✨ Why she left traditional systems to build her own bilingual practice✨ The creation of Recetas que Sanan—a cooking show that opens mental health conversations through food✨ How creative expression, storytelling, and joy support healing✨ Why therapists need their own therapy (and how healing enables deeper impact)✨ The importance of speaking out about collective pain and the current political climate A Therapist, Creator, & Courageous Leader After years of working in traditional clinical settings and feeling deeply unfulfilled, Elisa decided to start her own private practice in 2020—right as the pandemic hit. With clarity about her gifts and a drive to create meaningful, culturally responsive care, she launched Inclusive Empowerment Services, LLC. But Elisa's work goes far beyond therapy sessions. As a bilingual public speaker, trainer, and educator, she's passionate about bringing stories, lived experience, and emotional wisdom into schools, businesses, and community organizations. “I knew I had gifts I wasn't using—and I had to do something about it.” Recetas Que Sanan: Recipes That Heal What happens when you combine traditional cooking, storytelling, and emotional education? You get something completely magical—and that's exactly what Elisa created with Recetas que Sanan. This bilingual wellness initiative uses food as a gateway into deeper conversations about mental health and emotional well-being—particularly in Latinx and Spanish-speaking communities where stigma remains high. Cooking intuitively and sharing her personal stories while preparing traditional meals, Elisa helps viewers feel seen, nourished, and safe to explore emotions in a way that feels natural and culturally resonant. “Cooking is my magic. It's where my feelings live—and where connection begins.” From Surviving to Leading with Love Elisa generously shares about her early years in the U.S.—navigating family reunification, language barriers, and role reversal as a teen helping her parents navigate systems. She also opens up about surviving teen dating violence, and how that lived experience fuels her trainings and outreach today. Her commitment to authenticity is woven throughout her work. Whether she's leading a community workshop or filming an episode of Recetas que Sanan, she brings her full, human self—breaking the mold of what a therapist “should” be. “I'm cool. I'm human. I show up as myself—and I want others to feel safe doing the same.” Want to Sponsor Recetas que Sanan? Elisa is currently seeking sponsors to grow her bilingual show and expand access to culturally-grounded mental health conversations. Your support helps cover kitchen rental, ingredients, and tech equipment.

On today's podcast, I chat with Tanis Allen, a certified IFS therapist and longtime member of the IFS community. Tanis has been around since the earliest days of the model, and she just released a new book called The Self-Led IFS Workbook: Learn IFS Skills to Understand and Love All Your Parts published by Penguin Random House. We talk about her early experiences learning IFS in the ‘90s, her work with clients struggling with suicidality and eating disorders, and what it was like to write a book that makes the model accessible to everyone. Tanis shares insights on how to begin IFS on your own, the challenge of translating an oral and experiential tradition into clear written steps, and her favorite exercise for working with stuck parts. Key Takeaways: “Your awareness is the beginning of Self.” Tanis explains how simply noticing what's happening in your body or mind is the first step into the IFS process. How do you know you're in a part? Tanis breaks down how to begin this work, even if you're doing it on your own. “IFS is such a strong community… we sit in circles together and learn this together.” Tanis reflects on the power of shared learning and the influence of the “wise women” who helped shape the model. Why she added her own transcripts of parts work to the book, and what she discovered about herself through writing them. Her favorite exercise (the Four Drawing Exercise) and why it's so transformational for working with stuck parts. Favorite Quote: “Clients will often ask me, you know, does this make me like a multiple personality person or something? And, you know, the answer is no, we're all made this way, actually. And it does feel kind of weird sometimes. But the more we do it, the more we practice it, the less weird it feels." -- Tanis Allen About Tanis Allen Tanis Allen, LMSW, ACSW, is the author of The Self-Led Internal Family Systems Workbook: Learn to Use IFS Skills to Understand and Love All Your Parts.
