The Race and Rights Podcast
Linked but Distinct: Understanding Anti-Palestinian, Anti-Arab, and Anti-Muslim Racism (Part I) ( Episode 48)

The Race and Rights Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2025 62:03

In this first episode of a two-part series, guest host Esaa Mohammad Sabti Samarah, PhD, LMSW leads a powerful conversation examining how anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab, and anti-Muslim racisms function as distinct yet interconnected systems of harm. Together with scholars and practitioners Dr. Siham Elkassem, Dr. Bryn King, Dr. Nuha Dwaikat-Shaer, and Doctoral Candidate Amilah Baksh, the discussion examines how these forms of racism operate across structural, institutional, and interpersonal levels, and how they are sustained through histories of colonialism, racialization, and political violence. The episode critically interrogates the social work profession's response to these realities, confronting the gap between professed values and practiced silence. The panel names this silence as more than inaction: it is complicity reinforced by selective empathy, professional caution, and institutional pressures that limit meaningful engagement with Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim suffering.Listeners are invited to reflect on how racism is produced and maintained within professional spaces, and how social work education and practice can either reproduce harm or become a site of resistance and transformation. Part I lays the foundation by naming the problem clearly and setting the stage for a deeper examination in Part II, Beyond Neutrality: Confronting Silence, Resistance, and a Call to Action. The second episode deepens the conversation by examining neutrality, dissent, and professional responsibility, with particular attention to the impact on youth and affected communities. This episode is essential listening for anyone committed to racial justice, human rights, and accountability within social work and allied professions.#AntiRacism #PalestinianRights #AntiMuslimRacism #AntiPalistinianRacism #AntiArabRacism #ArabAndMuslimVoices #SocialWorkJustice #ColonialismAndResistanceLinks to Published WorksElkassem, S. ABOUT THE EPISODE:Author and therapist, Nicole Runyon, LMSW, witnessed something that reshaped her entire career: loving, intact families were producing children with trauma-like symptoms typically identified in severe abuse survivors. As a therapist watching teen after teen struggle with paralyzing anxiety and digital-age depression, she recognized she was working too far downstream. The revelation was both sobering and hopeful—these weren't organic mental health crises, but environmental challenges that parents could actually address. Her decision to leave a thriving therapy practice (complete with a multi-year waitlist) to educate parents directly speaks to a profound truth: we have far more power than we think, especially when we understand that saying "no" is actually an act of love. The statistics Nicole shares in this episode might make you squirm with recognition: mothers average just 120 minutes daily with their children while logging 4+ hours of screen time. But here's where her message becomes beautifully uncomfortable - through her own "I fell for it" moment rescuing her daughter from a forgetful incident, Nicole illuminates how our discomfort with our children's discomfort actually impedes their growth. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why "no" is the ultimate act of loveHow digital rejection can create personality-disorder-like traits in neurotypical teens, especially girls The optimal three-to-nine year old window for connection (but it's never too late)“Asked and answered": Your new boundary mantraHow to move from convenience to connectionEPISODE RESOURCES:“Free To Fly: Fostering Independence In The Next Generation” - Nicole's bookParent Coaching with NicoleThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. It is essential for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) to have a foundation of care prior to discharge after their cancer treatment, and the multidisciplinary care team, including primary care providers (PCPs), must be equipped to support these patients. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Scott J. Capozza, PT, MSPT, on his journey navigating care after cancer treatment as a young adult and his ASCO JCO Oncology Practice article, “Patient is Otherwise Healthy.” CANCER BUZZ then speaks with Melody Griffith, MSW, LMSW, Outpatient Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology social worker at Mayo Clinic Arizona, on her role in patient navigation and how her department supports AYAs through their entire cancer continuum. CANCER BUZZ concludes with Cathy Lee-Miller, MD, director of AYA Oncology Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, on their cohort training program preparing PCPs for managing AYA survivorship care.    “The late effects for young adults are very real and a lot of times they are not recognized because we look otherwise healthy on the outside, but that belies what's going on internally.” - Scott J. What happens when kids grow up without free play? Licensed therapist Nicole Runyon, LMSW, has been on the frontlines of America's childhood mental health crisis, and what she's seen is sobering: most of the children filling therapy offices don't actually need therapy—they need their parents to reclaim the foundations of childhood. In this episode, we dig into her groundbreaking book Free to Fly and uncover why play, movement, discomfort, and independence are not luxuries—they are the very building blocks of healthy development. Screens, overpathologizing, and permissive parenting are stealing what used to come naturally, and our kids are paying the price. Nicole explains why play-based childhoods are being stolen from today's iGeneration, how “drug addiction begins with the iPad,” and why discomfort is not the enemy but the doorway to confidence and resilience. We cover everything from the dangers of tracking teens and delaying driving, to the epidemic of broken children overwhelmed by screens, junk food, and anxiety. Most importantly, Nicole reminds us that the answer lies within the family unit. Parents have more power than they think, and small, courageous choices can restore independence, health, and joy to the next generation. Learn more about your ad choices. Linda has assisted Dr. Bessel van der Kolk in psychotherapy workshops on attachment trauma and offers trainings and courses worldwide. Key Takeaways for Therapists Gentle rocking and orienting to distance are accessible entry points for regulation. Track SUNs (Subjective Units of Nourishment) as well as distress in sessions. Somatic work expands capacity for rest, not just activation. Therapists must contextualize disembodiment within colonization, hustle culture, and systemic exploitation. What does it take to start over in a new place? The Stern siblings—Yakov (10), Rina (8), and Toby (5)—know firsthand, having just moved from Miami Beach, Florida to Manchester, New Jersey less than a week before our conversation. Their honest reflections reveal the complex emotions of leaving behind everything familiar: excitement about living closer to extended family, sadness about missing friends, and nervousness about fitting in at a new school. Each child approaches this transition differently. Yakov proactively seeks out future classmates, gathering intelligence about his new school. Rina worries about being included in games and conversations. Toby packed a framed photo of her and her friend to keep memories close. Their differing approaches remind us that personality, age, and individual resilience all shape how children navigate life changes.Social worker Avi Kohn, LMSW offers transformative wisdom about transitions, introducing the crucial distinction between confidence and courage. "Confidence comes from experience," he explains, "but courage is what we call upon when we have no confidence yet." This powerful framework helps children understand that feeling uncertain doesn't mean they're doing something wrong—it means they're facing a situation that requires bravery rather than prior experience.Rabbi Kohn shares practical strategies for both newcomers and those welcoming them. For new children: take initiative rather than waiting for others, be prepared for adjustment to take months rather than days, and respond to potential unkindness with kindness. For welcoming students: remember the mitzvah of being kind to newcomers, recognize that small acts of inclusion can have lasting impacts, and understand that differences may initially feel scary but offer opportunities for growth.Whether your child is starting kindergarten, moving to a new community, or joining a new activity, this episode provides the emotional vocabulary and practical tools to transform challenging transitions into opportunities for developing resilience. Courtney Costello is a licensed master's social worker with nearly 15 years of experience in the field. She worked predominantly with families and children before having her son in 2023, when she became personally and professionally passionate about maternal well-being and mental health. Combining her education and lived experience, Courtney now works as a perinatal mental health counselor in Buffalo, NY. In addition, she runs an online maternal mental health training for other clinicians who are interested in learning more about supporting mothers.
