Movies are the ultimate form of storytelling; an (ideally) perfect mesh of writing, cinematography, and music. It's a form that deserves to be done properly and celebrated. In 2022, in a world of sequels and reboots, the craft of filmmaking almost seems lost. But there is some hope, and we will give credit where credit is due (because let's be honest, Fast Five is a fun heist movie). The point is, filmmaking is an extraordinary thing, and we will celebrate it. Contact me at stphnlnngr@gmail.com for questions, comments, or even movie requests.
Season 1 finale! Thank you for listening to me talk about movies for a few hours this Summer, I hope you enjoyed it! I decided to close out the inaugural season of Movielover22 with an early—early—recording of me discussing Scott Pilgrim with a good friend of mine. It wound up being a 2-hour discussion and even when edited down it was still far too long to be a regular episode so it seemed fitting that it could only be the finale of it all. We'll see you next season! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/movielover22/message
Sunshine is the sci-fi flick your friends never told you about, despite the fact that it stars Captain America himself, and the guy from Peaky Blinders. Please stop telling me that Interstellar is a great movie because it's "scientifically accurate", it doesn't matter, Star Wars has nothing to do with reality and it's still a good movie. Give this one a shot, I guarantee it's worth spending your next movie night on. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/movielover22/message
I remember when Kick Ass came out I compared it to Inglourious Basterds, calling it an edgelord wannabe for swearing in the title, copying Quentin Tarantino. And then I saw it, and I was wrong. I was very wrong. It's a fun pile of fun and honestly just watch it for Nicholas Cage, but it will pull you in because it's a legitimately fun and good movie. In the Mouth of Madness is one of the weirder movies you've never seen. And why haven't you seen it? Because your friends told you the Child's Play remake was good. They're wrong and your friends have terrible taste in movies. But you don't. Switch it up and put on this weird and great and entertaining horror flick from John Carpenter, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Move over Halloween, step up your budget and step up the thrills. The Grand Budapest Hotel is the hotel we've always dreamed of but didn't know it until Wes Anderson presented it to us in beautiful 4:3 ratio in theaters and we all fell in love with it. I love it, and so do you. The Warriors is one of those movies that you can't get your friends to watch even though it's awesome because it "looks old and dumb." I can't help that you have terrible taste in film, Craig. This movie is badass and brutal and eerie in all the right places that a 1979 flick should hit. Ryan Reynolds was America's sweetheart circa 2002, sorry Tina Fey, but before he was Deadpool and after he was Chris Brander, he was Paul Conroy, an everyman post-9/11 trying to earn a living for his family suddenly fighting for his life. That got super dark real quick, but that's okay because the movie is really solid and we're gonna dive into it! Ruby Sparks is a treasured movie in my collection, one that I'm sure I'll revisit at least once a year. Man, I love Paul Dano. Okay yeah, I don't give this franchise much support because it's almost devolved into an action series with some cars in it that fall out of planes or self-drive out of parking garages, but 2001's introduction to Paul Walker and Vin Diesel's world was a very respectable effort, and worth the watch. I first saw Her years ago, probably after I had already bought the blu-ray. Anyway it's a solid movie, not flawless, of course, but worth watching, even for Spike's beautiful portrayal of a non-depressing futuristic society and human connection.
